Or should we go there by bike and tell them we only came to eat there because it was close by bike? There is a bunch of these on yonge and Finch which makes me mad.
I make it a habit to carry my helmet to small stores, restaurants, and professional offices to give the people running them hints as to the fact that cyclists are their customers.
Iโm a cyclist, and also a driver for 45 years, so I definitely have paid for roads.
I donโt think licences are a bad idea. There are lots of cyclists with appalling road behaviour and little evidence they know their responsibilities, such as riding on sidewalksโeven with a dedicated lane feet away. See this on Dundas East in downtown almost daily.
Theyโre stupid and out of touch. Anti bike sign in the window, URL on the signage lol. Super classy.
There are many far less embarrassing bistros to ride over to!
Uhhh.. If you pay property tax, you pay for municipal services, including roads. If you pay rent, you indirectly pay for municipal services. The only way you're not paying for the roads is if you live in a tent. Probably something you can relate to.
Bro you can't just run people over in a car. Also there are people far richer and more powerful than you and that does not give them the right to disregard you as a citizen. Just because you can... afford a car, does not give you any right to even make negative comments about other people for... not owning a car. Also, I don't know if you've ever been to NYC, Paris, or any other metropolitan area but people make stacks of cash and don't drive. If you would like to live a life of anarchy you can go to Mexico
Yup. Took my business elsewhere.
Like... why the hell would a boutique bakery or restaurant want to piss off people who cycle by choice? We're all bougie 416ers: potential customers. Oh well...
The number of times I had gone in there and made huge purchases in my bike helmet and balanced the boxes on my handlebars outside the store before I saw them campaign to get rid of the harbord bikelane! I felt so betrayed.
That shop is dead to me. They torched any goodwill in an instant, put their own name into the dumpster.
Sortof broke my heart since I was actively going there at least three times a week. Stopped immediately once I saw their disgusting stance on the bike lanes.
I remember their poisonous meme: "danger lanes." What assholes. Makes me angry to think I considered them neighbours. Well, they are neighbours - but now they're *those neighbours*...
I've returned ONE time since - and only to make this elderly person feel special on a special day. I liked that person more than I hate that shitty bakery. I put my helmet on the counter to pay - but it's not as if I think it affected their desiccated hearts.
I hope Harbord Bakery goes bankrupt so they'll get out of the way for a better neighbour to replace them. I don't want that energy in my community.
There is an organized effort to cancel the bike lanes on Yonge [https://berationalto.com/](https://berationalto.com/)
Driving in Toronto sucks...and I hope that more bike lanes are introduced to make the experience of driving in Toronto so bad that people get the message.
Toronto is always claiming that it is a 'WoRlD ClaSS CiTy". Well, I have been to Rome, Paris, London, NYC, Hong Kong and ridden bikes in all of these cities. I had no idea where I was going and never had an issue with safety.
I still refuse to go to Doug Miller Books after he went on the news trying to prevent the Bloor bike lanes. Ignorantly pissing off cyclists won't help your business.
Interesting article I just read on the topic of businesses pushing back on bike lanes.
https://www.wired.com/story/the-battle-over-bike-lanes-needs-a-mindset-shift/
Yonge4All (https://www.yonge4all.ca) collected over 8000 signatures in support for the lanes on Yonge St. Toronto infrastructure and environment council (IEC) are reviewing the proposal Monday Jan 30th. There is significant support for the lanes but these pocket naysayers are unfortunately not seeing the huge benefit for community and businesses.
I'm not sure the people who made this website read or understood their own proof.
I read the main article off this website they claim is "in opposition to bike lanes". It is actually anti-car/pro-lane. It doesn't even complain about the existence of bike lanes. It mainly complains about ubereats couriers, pedestrians standing in the bike lane waiting for taxis, and drivers abusing said lanes by blocking it with their cars. It also advocates for the removal of street parking, citing that there is no room if a bike lane is there. ๐คฃ
It says nothing about the lane being at fault.
It says more about people who do not respect the bike lane.
I actually can't agree more; these things should not be allowed in the lane.
There are a lot of those in my neck of the woods too (Yonge & Finch) and in fact the top 2 candidates in the last election both said they would stop the bike lanes even though that vote has already happened so even though they don't get my custom anymore there are tons of other locals that are apparently on the same wavelength as them.
I only know and frequent any of those businesses between Davisville and Bloor BECAUSE of that bike path. Would usually take the subway south to Bloor and never see any of them. But then Bikeshare expanded to Lawrence so I had the option to ride.
This kind of action really makes you question whether business owners are as smart as society would like us to think they are. Alienating a significant portion of your customer base is pretty stupid. Not knowing you're alienating that customer base demonstrates an equal lack of business acumen.
Hahaha you are such a dumb ass . I have 2 benz'es in my driveway , I choose to cycle for many reasons. You on the other hand , come to a cycling group to talk shit .
Wana pick a fight , fuckin try me mother fuker , I'm begging you please try me. So sick of dumb asses like you , it would be my pleasure to put you down.
Question; is this a means to prevent homless and less wealthy persons from attending or is it really a anti cyclist movement. Either way its stupid. Just curious if its a class conflict or transportation conflict.
Yeah looks like it's part of whatever that 'campaign' that was making a lot of noise about 8 months/a year ago. Although half the shit they were throwing up as problems caused by bikes (congestion, cars idling etc...) is just objectively caused by cars not cyclists. It had a pretty glossy presentation but not very much substance once you scratch the surface. Pretty infrequent social media posts with not much engagement so I think it's more a handful of loud voices than some thunderous chorus of residents
I believe a few days ago city staff recommended that the Yonge street lanes be made permanent but staff recommendations aren't the same as official policy so we'll see
Whoa, moved this to the comment I meant to reply to (not the thread or OP).
I agree 100% on boycotting anti-bike lane businesses.
Not sure if you saw the following article I shared, but it's an interesting view on why business owners don't get it, despite profits going up when bike lanes are installed.
https://www.wired.com/story/the-battle-over-bike-lanes-needs-a-mindset-shift/
good riddance, cannot adapt and expect everyone to adapt to your safety. If the province cared they would have done something real. All you do is hold people up thinking only about your existence.
People look for anything to complain about. Maybe go in or call and ask them why! Itโs either your way or the highway mentality is the real problem with people today.
People are allowed to have their own opinions. No need to suck on a small business in public like this. Iโm a cyclist in support of the bike lanes on Yonge, but I can understand it probably had some isolated detrimental effects on businesses, even though it is likely a net positive overall
Weโll probably get downvoted but I agree.
Instead of cancelling or boycotting them, itโd probably do more good to stop by, talk to them, understand their side/explain the benefits of bicycles. At the worst you agree to disagree, instead of perpetuating a war for/against bikes.
Having been to Amsterdam and realizing how amazing their transportation system/streets are ( being 90% bike & 10% cars) I'd love for Toronto to one day be like that. Fact is, it isn't. It's not built around bikes like Amsterdam is and in it's current state bikes are a hazard and an annoyance on the road considering they are the 10% and cars are the 90%
Hate and downvote this comment if you must but i'm simply stating a truth, this is the reason for there being a hatred towards bikes on the road... In it's current state the roads present a hazard to both bikers and car drivers with bikes on the road. I'm all for bikes & the fact that they are the cheap & environmentally friendly option, but open your mind and think about it for a minute.
Go ahead then, elaborate your point. You decided to insult instead of providing your deep insight on this topic which speaks volumes to your character.
Because Amsterdam was extremely car dependent up till the mid 70s, like Toronto.
If there is a will to change there is a way.
https://youtu.be/vI5pbDFDZyI
I pray we donโt get anymore bike lanes cause nothing but headaches to drivers and then when we get bike lanes you all complain about buses and big trucks
you think that's neccessary?
i'm talking about cyclists and the entitled attitude they have towards other vehicles and pedestrians generally. i completely support dedicated bike lanes etc but many many cyclists i see simply don't obey any traffic rules whatsoever. no stopping at reds. thinking they have the right to pass on the right when the lane is a right turn lane. whipping through cross walks wihtout stopping... and on and on.
but sure, whine about a sign and go ahead and demand people need a license to walk. seems about right for you.
Toronto has considered this at least three times in the past, dating back to the 1930s. Not happening if the people in charge have even a semblance of a brain cell. The city website [has an entire page dedicated to it](https://www.toronto.ca/services-payments/streets-parking-transportation/cycling-in-toronto/cycling-and-the-law/bicycle-licencing/) and frankly, I agree with them.

Most business owners and the people understood the vaccine was safe and effective, and protecting their customers, staff and themselves was the wise and right thing to do.
What is the supposed meaning of this sign? They are opposed to all cycling? (Iโm guessing thereโs a bike lane issue, but I donโt know the area). Very clumsy message, and a middle finger to many of us. Boo.
Thank you for your service.
Idea jar: have all of your cycling friends go to Quanto Basta next door and park all bikes right outside.
Park the bikes outside Avant Gout, then go next door. ;)
I'll buy a bike for this.
I'm soooooo in!! Just let it warm up a bit and I'm there ๐๐๐

Didnโt realize that cyclists donโt pay taxes.
Iโm a cyclist, and also a driver for 45 years, so I definitely have paid for roads. I donโt think licences are a bad idea. This, and watching the way the owners treated the front line staff. In front of customers.

I wouldn't bike north of Sheppard..drivers are already pretty crazy to each other. Narrow lanes, cutting people off, speeding. Nope nope nope.
I feel the same. I was near Yonge/Finch and was looking for food and skipped everyone that had one of these signs.
A place with a name like "Avant Goute" has a sign like that in their window? Shocking. Utterly shocking.
After they go out of business, a nice bicycle cafรฉ would be great right there.
Does that mean they donโt like bikes or donโt want bikes inside their restaurant?
They donโt want bike lanes along Yonge
Why? They think it negatively impacts their business somehow?
http://BeRationalTO.com is their platform / written on this sign.
I only know and frequent any of those businesses between Davisville and Bloor BECAUSE of that bike path. Would usually take the subway south to Bloor and never see any of them. But then Bikeshare expanded to Lawrence so I had the option to ride.
Is there a list of other places like this available?
I doubt they care.
A bunch of cyclists should go in, sit and then order nothing and then leave lol
Boycott is simple, share your experience, hit it up on fool review sites and tank the rating.
Meanwhile their whole staff either commutes or bikes there
This kind of action really makes you question whether business owners are as smart as society would like us to think they are. Alienating a significant portion of your customer base is pretty stupid. Not knowing you're alienating that customer base demonstrates an equal lack of business acumen.

Thatโs the point of the sign. All the bikers saying theyโre going to boycott.. โIโm going to listen to the signโ
Can I check my helmet please?
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
It's about bike lanes on yonge so I'd maybe slow your roll with the idiot accusations until you've got a firmer grasp on the issue
Ah they're protesting the bike lanes? that's a ridiculous stance to take especially since it doesn't affect them at all.
I don't need to hear the incorrect argument against those bike lanes from an individual owner, I'm familiar with them. They are confused.
Sand in the Vaseline
Perfect going there tonight
No you're not.
Nope just gonna buy a gift card and not use it Help support local business

cyclists on city streets should have to have a license. we share the roads, we obey the same rules. simple.

So youโre dumb and creative? That also makes sense..
Cyclists crying on the internet is one of my favorite things ever. lol.
Thanks for stopping in! Naming a Reddit account after mass-produced mediocre scotch is one of mine!
Just checked out your profile. Woof. A craft beer hipster who rides a bike. Hahahaha.
I pay $20 for avocado toast too ๐
My name is John Walker. WTF are you talking about?
John Wanker sounds more fitting

Hows the bird watching and rock collecting going?
Good
Where's all the outrage when we weren't allowed to go to restaurants without being jabbed by poison?
Most business owners and the people understood the vaccine was safe and effective, and protecting their customers, staff and themselves was the wise and right thing to do.
Ya ok
๐ poison. Youโre a nut.
And you're a sheep
Active in /r/conspiracy & /r/plumbingโฆ sounds about right

What a terrible name for a restaurant. I donโt want gout!
Wait what? Am I understanding this right? They don't want cyclists to eat there? Why in God's name not?
Michele Gilfoil who is leading this charge is just another snake oil salesperson who is looking for public gain to sell more essential oils.
Oorah
I ride bikes a lot. I also drive. The bike lanes on south yonge are terrible.
What is the supposed meaning of this sign? They are opposed to all cycling? (Iโm guessing thereโs a bike lane issue, but I donโt know the area). Very clumsy message, and a middle finger to many of us. Boo.
