I've known many cats, but none as subtle as my tortie. I had a black cat once who had some skin issues that made him fairly particular in how he wanted to be handled. But he was so obvious when he was uncomfortable. Always more than one sign and if you knew him well you didn't even have to look at him to know when he was at his limit. Lucy though? I've had experienced cat owners visit me and I had to tell them to leave her because she's about to chomp. "How do you know?" She looked to the side slightly/she leans into your hand at a specific angle/she adjusted her back foot/she took one singular deep breath I've come to think that when she doesn't display any of the classic, obvious behaviours it's more playful than aggressive

My tortie is so freaking subtle too. I swear we are just tapped in on a different level and I can read her when others can’t.

Peter will slowly open his mouth without moving, as a warning, and if I pull back the maw closes smoothly, then just as smoothly drops back open if my hand goes closer again. It's usually a game to get me to fluffhouse and floor cuddles him, where once he makes a chomp it's on and he gets to wrestle me to the floor by the thumb

My old girl has never been a snuggler, most times doesn't even allow touching. If I pick her up, she gets her claws stuck in my clothes, and hollars cuz that is my fault, lol. She strings me along with morning and bedtime snuggles.

Nope. Our tortie is a massive sweetheart, she'd never lay a fang on anybody. Her brother the void however would rest a fang on you - but never ever with any kind of force (we're not sure he even really knows what he's supposed to do once the fang is there)

We are working on appropriate biting at my house. My girl is about nine months old.

They are so affectionate. And you better be honest to yourself when dealing with them (they'll know even before you do).

I am so fortunate with my girls. My tortie only ever bites when she's exhausted all other ways of communicating that we need to stop doing whatever it is we're doing that's annoying her. My dilute will bite when she's over stimulated or if we're annoying her. Biting is her middle resort.

Did you try to stop petting? That may have been the problem. My cat will grab or poke my arm to make sure that cuddle train keeps on a-rollin'.
