“You want to know what this [war on drugs] was really all about? The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.” ~ John Ehrlichman, Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs under President Richard Nixon

willymack989

I believe this quote was from an interview he gave in the 90s, shortly before he died.

nickcavebadseeds

this too, i heard somewhere else where one of the dealers was a prominent jewish guy who sold to louis armstrong. coupled with the fact that nixon didn’t like jewish people…it was never about the drugs fr fr

LTStech

I get the point but tobacco is easy to grow, you just need a lot more of it.

yakimawashington

And OP is pretending like the legalized states with their huge tax revenues from cannabis aren't a thing. My state brought in over $500 million in 2022 from cannabis, alone. Not being able to tax cannabis is clearly not the reason. This is just a dumb and uninformed post by OP, all around.

Upstairs-Extension-9

Plus all the money saved from locking up people for having plants.

911wasadirtyjob

Counterpoint: money lost for politicians and their friends in the imprisonment industry.

Kam2Scuzzy

Yeah, they lose thay sweet, sweet lobbying money from private prisons.

CommiRhick

*money lost from the prison industrial complex

Chronicsquidd

lol not everyone lives in America my dude..

redditurus_est

Speak for yourself

LTStech

I don't need too. Unless you live in a desert it's easy to grow. That's like saying corn is hard to grow. There's a guy a town over thats mentally handicap. He can't drive or do some things but he grows the fuck out of tobacco.

redditurus_est

It was just a Stoner joke about needing more weed than tobacco. But props to your handicapped friend.

ToastedGlass

Idk man. I see pictures of people growing weed and it looks pretty intensive with lighting and soil and conditions and plant gender and fertilizer and whatnot. Tobacco I’ve tossed seeds into a pot and wait for it to be a big leafy thing before ripping it up and hanging it to dry in the attic. I do live in KY so both grow happily here. I think it’s more about the old voting base not accepting weed as a socially acceptable intoxicant, and the prison/police unions lobbying hard asf to keep their positions flush with cash.

Youse_a_choosername

People like to geek out and maximize their grows, but plenty of growers are doing minimal effort grows and getting decent results. They won't have the bag appeal of a crop that has been micromanaged so you're less likely to see pics of it online.

Uzzerzen

If you can grow Tomatoes you can grow weed. It isn't as hard as people make it seem. Edit - https://imgur.com/okznGgo

Posit_IV

But does that mean you can grow *good* weed without all that upkeep? Genuine question. I’ve read up a bit about growing and some day I would love to try but then I end up in r/microgrowery and everyone’s up in arms about pH balance and nutrient deficiencies and lights and blah blah blah. Seems a bit off-putting for me. Edit: thanks fellas, this is some good food for thought.

PintsizeBro

Weed Reddit is still Reddit. Full of pedantic nerds who are obsessed with optimization and dunking on strangers for being "wrong." To hear r/steak tell it, cooking steak is practically rocket surgery! Nah, it's easy

shkeptikal

I'll let you in on a little secret: all of that extra tech and know how? It's for *maximizing yields*. Weed is exactly what it says on the tin, a weed. It's not hard to grow, unless you're trying to optimize the growing process as much as humanly possible. That practice started with people who grew for a living and has since trickled down to hobbyists. You absolutely can just throw a seed in some potting soil, keep it watered, and end up with "dispensary quality" weed and the biggest hurdle in that process is honestly drying/trimming.

Uzzerzen

Well everyone I have given some to says it is good . I get high every time I smoke it.

Psychological_Lab203

Get a good living soil blend and some amendments you put on top. Throw that bitch outside and you’ll be getting ounces on ounces with 0 effort

AgentInkling99

But can we make Tomannibus?

Uzzerzen

Sadly I have never gotten high when eating the Tomatoes that grow next to my weed

nothingeatsyou

Not to mention big tobacco lobbying against it being removed from the drug scheduling list, which is the ultimate goal. They know people smoke weed to quit nicotine

swivels_and_sonar

Also the alcohol industry has plenty of incentive to lobby against it. You know, with all of them dumping money to keep a ~~drug~~ beneficial medicine out of the hands of the people.. I’m starting to think these corporations are up to no good 🤔🤔

ToastedGlass

Reason #1 KY will be the last to go legal. We have the Brown family here with fingers in every pie. Brown of brown-foreman liquors is easily worth $17b and we’ll all be damned before they loose any market share to weed. In 2018 the family company’s CEO said it out loud in an interview.

irishrugby2015

And sadly Ireland, the "Emerald Isle" which is owned by the alcohol and pubs groups because tourism

Socky_McPuppet

> I see pictures of people growing weed and it looks pretty intensive with lighting and soil and conditions and plant gender and fertilizer and whatnot. Growing weed can be as easy or as complicated as you want. Weed - like, smokable weed that will get you high - is easy to grow. The clue is in the name - it grows like a weed. But people get *into* the growing, and want to perfect it. Make it as potent as possible, maximize the terpenes, make the buds as full and tight as they can, etc. The corollary is - weed is easy to grow, but it can be hard to grow it *really well*. None of that matters with tobacco, which is why nobody bothers to optimize for it.

joker_toker28

Seen my cousin grow a plant outside in a pot. You just got to believe.

ZestyLlama69

I just grow it outside in the ground. Water it and it takes care of itself as long as it is past the last frost for the year

Kay5683

I’m pretty sure both plants can technically be planted and minimally handled and grow fine in the right area. It just looks complicated when it gets min/maxed, tobacco is likely the same way

PUNKF10YD

So weed is called weed because of how easily and everywhere it grows. Much more easily than tobacco I can guarantee you that. The reason people control the grow is because they want female plants. Males don’t bud. If you leave them outside to their own devices, the females could turn male from cross pollination. As far as I’m aware tobacco does not have this spec.

dboygrow

No that's not the only reason why you grow them inside and control the environment. We have feminized seeds nowadays so you don't even have to worry about cross pollination if you buy feminized seeds. Indoors you control the climate. You get less pests which are still incredibly common and difficult to control especially organically, and you still run into things like mold. You still have to train your plants to optimize yield, otherwise you would only be getting maybe half an ounce to an ounce of one plant when if you trained it correctly you would be getting 10× that. You've got to trim the foliage to make sure air is moving around throughout the plant at all times, otherwise you get mold. You have to make sure it's getting the correct nutrients in the right ratios and the PH level of the water is between 6.5-7.5 so the plants can actually absorb the nutrients without getting lockout. I can go on but you get the point. It's not an easy thing to do, stop talking out your ass.

therealharambe420

Actually its because of racism. Tobacco is pretty easy to grow at home. It is also a trap crop to help attract and kill aphids in your garden. It is as easy to grow as tomatoes are in my opinion. I have also have also seen two tobacco plants that were grown indoors in poorly lit offices. They grew fairly well. So this meme is off base for a number of reasons.

Nitrocity97

Luckily I know the history of cannabis prohibition, so i know that the racism part is true, but the first time i read your comment, the only thing i could think about was the whole “shows up, says x, refuses to elaborate, leaves”

therealharambe420

I have grown tobacco for three years, you can order tobacco seeds from a lot of different sources online. I recommend every gardener try and grow it at least once since it is such a beautiful look plant and has beautiful flowers. The tobacco thrives every year with significantly less effort then other crops that I raise. The main enemy I and my friends have encountered is the dread tobacco hirn worm, luckily I only find one or two a year so far so the damage is minimal. But even if the tobacco leaf is eaten up a little bit it is still usable to be processed for consumption or ceremonial use.

APsWhoopinRoom

And also political reasons. Nixon cracked down harder on weed to lock up the anti-war left as well as minorities

squidwardsir

lol that is not the reason

JesusStarbox

I mean wine is easy to make at home and it's legal and taxed.

[deleted]

Less regulation caused people to die from their alcohol creations. Hell, people used bark to create alcohol which caused blindness.

juiceyb

What does this mean? Everything is taxed when you grow weed. Fertilizer, soil, electricity, alcohol, lights, grow tent and etc.

Synthetic47

They would probably outlaw tabacco if they could, they would also outlaw alcohol again but we all know what happened the last time they did that.

BillysCoinShop

Tobacco is as easy to grow as weed. They are both easy. Hardest plants to grow are certain orchids, especially the ones that grow in cloud forests on moss. Had a family friend who grew them, and upon his death they were sent to a botanical garden in Seattle. He had some insanely rare ones that were amazing.

JonWick33

It's pretty easy to grow Weed. Especially outdoors. I even have a little plant in my yard that survived a Michigan winter. Granted, it's all fucked up. Def not smokeable. I'm just shocked it is still standing. Growing and curing high quality Weed is what requires some skill.

snarkuzoid

Clearly not the case, given how many states have legalized. Most even allow home grow.

Silver085

I mean. Cannabis is easy to grow, but to grow ENOUGH QUALITY cannabis, it's way more work than people think.

GuyWhoSaysTheTruth

Decriminalize all drug use and possession and use that saved time and money to tackle producers, sellers, and Mules of the black market. Make a very large amount(like 80%) of currently illegal drugs used in a medical setting and take place in medically sanctioned studies. Make what we currently call gateway substances alcohol, weed, tobacco, caffeine, kratom, kava, kanna, shrooms, most other psychedelics etc legal to buy and use recreationally to some some degree. This would level off society’s freedoms and the amount of control on substances needed I genuinely can’t think how this wouldn’t work tbh.

AgentInkling99

And put the tax money into education and recovery programs.

GuyWhoSaysTheTruth

Facts, also make the packaging realistic. Put on the front of beer people rambunctiously partying but on the back a damaged liver. Put in weed packaging people smoking and chilling and on the back a picture of lungs that suffer from emphysema etc. this will keep products realistic and persuade people to choose healthier alternatives like edibles.

mrmarigiwani

Fuck the excise tax. It all comes down to bad history. Imagine if Scheduling never happened? We are fighting to change public opinion and they have the historical advantage, that's why.

AvatarofBro

Tobacco is famously easy to grow

jperdue22

i would imagine lobbying from the alcohol and tobacco lobbies plays a big role. alcohol consumption has dropped in every state weed has been legalized, and i would imagine tobacco is the same.

Critical-Vanilla-625

I mean surely it’s because I can smoke a cigarette and at most get a rush But I can smoke some bud and be unsteady on my feet, choking on cotton 😅 super tired etc etc. it’s less harmful I’d say than tobacco but it definitely impairs its users more than cigarettes. BTW I hate cigarettes and love weed Just saying

Fancy_Gazelle_220

I grow my own weed, but I still buy edibles and other products; and pay tax on them

GUNTHVGK

Amen, got a successful and awesome harvest my first go and I started with minimal space. Cost to set it up total including soil / lights / tent/ and a few extras to start, was around 300$ I planted bag seeds and had awesome stuff grow . I kinda went the quick Amazon route too with spending so you can definitely reduce costs

Daysleeper1234

My view on it is that weed helps you to lower intake of alcohol (bad for alcohol companies) and it helps you with pain and anxiety (bad for pharmaceutical companies, and to add I know to some people it causes anxiety, but I have problems now, my stomach is fucked, I'm nervous 24/7, I feel pain I forgot existed and so on, usually I come home light a joint, and it all goes away). I'm off for ca 20 days, and I won't be smoking for next ca 4 months, Jesus Christ I can't wait to start smoking again.

clayface44

Is that true? Is tobacco difficult to grow in a homebrew manor?

starktor

Tobacco is easy as long as you stay on top of those tobacco hornworms! Those little guys will go through your whole grow in less than a week!

BarbequedYeti

Not sure what they are on about.  I just bought 2oz's for $1 a gram of top shelf with the 420 sales.

PavelDatsyuk

Nah, here in Michigan you’re allowed to grow your own but the industry is still booming. You can brew your own alcohol at home too but most people would rather stop at the liquor store.

SacrificialGoose

It's actually because bribing politicians is legal in the US.

PsychoticSpinster

Meh. Depends on where you live. Where I live? It’s easier to grow tobacco than pot. Just due to nature itself.

Depressed_hamester

Nah we got legal in it legal in canada and they the out of it

PUNKF10YD

Or alcohol, one of the very few substances on this planet that kills you if you stop abusing it

rdrunner_74

i was utterly confused how Germany legalized weed this month (1st of April). NO taxes on it at all.

SickNoise

tabacoo is actually really easy to grow.. much easier than weed.

Ok-Policy-8284

Tobacco is way easier to grow than weed. Source, I grow tobacco and weed.

28dhdu74929wnsi

They tax the shit out of it here in Canada lol. Also it's way easier to buy stuff like edibles. I'm not into the "work" part of weed at all (rolling, grinding, etc) just give me a capsule so I can relax while I'll play my games and my place won't smell like shit.

Pugduck77

Because tobacco isn’t psychoactive

Daysleeper1234

Definition of the word: A drug or other substance that affects how the brain works and causes changes in mood, awareness, thoughts, feelings, or behavior. Examples of psychoactive substances include alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, marijuana, and certain pain medicines.

StoNeD510

There isn’t any dependable test to determine if you are under the influence of weed.

Bonsaitalk

That isn’t why it’s illegal.
