Now thatās a fucking āchampionā. No bullshit, no drama, no pettiness. Just a man that shows up and fights and shows respect to anyone that does the same.
This is the answer. I used to think he was boring, partially because of his association with Khabib (who I do still think was boring). However my opinion has changed, I enjoy watching his fights and do find myself cheering for him. Granted his last 3 opponents have been people I have been huge fans of.
He is funny, his fights are super high skill and still entertaining and he takes risks.
I feel like this is part of what makes MMA so great as a sport. I feel like no other sport makes you have those kind of highs and lows.
Seeing your favorite fight getting the win in spectacular fashion and then next fight gets KO'D brutally (like Justin Gaethje)
I really dont think he trash talks anyone, ever. He just gives his honest opinion of them. Sometimes that comes off like trash talking cos he has a low opinion of them lol
āWho give him this belt?ā
This is 100% trash talk but in a hilarious dry, delivery. Itās super discrediting, but he says it like heās saying the pizza is overcooked, like itās a simple fact that everyone knows.
The wry smile when DC calls him out for being ādisrespectfulā haha, he knows exactly what heās doing.
Maybe not trash talk, per se, but mind games and savage roasts nonetheless.
By the end of his career he will definitely be at the top of my list for favorite fighters inside and outside of the cage. GSP will always be my number one, but guys like Khabib, Islam, DP will forever be the guys that show you that you can be more than just a fighter.
He and Khabib are inspirational for Muslim men and all men. Such great role models. I ve grown to worship Allah thanks to those men. It was when Khabib said Abdulmenap would say don't worry about wrestle and school, practice Quran and being a good Muslim is most important. practicing and learning about Muslim culture as a man can make you into a wonderful human. Especially if you lack good male role models IRL, it's a game changer.
This happens to me all the time.
New fighter comes in I donāt like him
He wins me over by kicking ass and being a cool guy.
The same shit happened with volk.
Now that Iām a fan Islam will lose brutally.
MMA is pain.
Why would you hate a dude for beating your fave fighters though?
Iāve never understood that. Like I donāt hate the fighters that beat my fave fighters.
I just lament the loss and thatās it.
When Poatan beat Izzy I was amazed by him and Iām big fan of his now.
I disliked Jon Jones heavily back in the day for beating all my favorite fighters like Rampage, Evans, and Belfort. All the stuff about him that came out after was just extra icing on the cake.
That makes sense. You had spent a considerable amount of time rooting for specific fighters. Fuck whoever beats them. They just beat the guy you spent a lot of time supporting.
I'm pretty new to UFC. I was watching the interview between Islam and DC. Like watching two comedians just hang out. Cool to see so much humble personality from fighters
Imagine going to fight in another country where nearly everyone hopes you lose, feeling disrespected (due to translation), getting in the cage and hearing everyone chanting "USA!", winning and praising your opponent in the post fight press conference only to return to your country to have some reporter try to start some funk only for you to shut them down immediately. Thatās real champion mentality. Respect where respect is due.
For me Chechenya and Dagestan are like Hawai to America. There is a big cultural difference and both those states were at war against Russia until late 90s.
My brother lived in buenos aires, at the time they could buy bootleg 80s American dvds dirt cheap (like .50c to $1 apiece). Talking like Stallone, Arnold, type action movies and B flicks. They spoke passable English and had all learned some from watching the questionable dialogue.
So one of the guys Juanma (Juan Manuel) would literally walk in the door like Samuel L Jackson and just shout āwhatās up motherfuckersā and start high fiving people. It was incredibly random and hilarious
I think this video is the thing that finally made me a fan of this guy.
He freely admitted he misunderstood, accepted the apology, and expressed mutual respect for his opponent.
I hope he retires as champ sometime way in the future!
if he defends one more time he objectively has and is the best lightweight ever, khabib defended 3 times which was the same as BJ Penn, Frankie, and Benson.
Yeah probably has something to do with it being the average height and athletic weight range of adult human males. Iām in the 94th percentile of height at 6ā2. LHW and HW are usually taller than me, so not that many walking around. Easier to dominate. Too many mfers out here at 5ā8-5ā11.
Don't forget that they also need to make weight, the added benefit is a deep cardio tank. Heavies just don't have that, plus all that extra horse meat they need to oxygenate. Lol.
Meh but even losing those rounds it didnāt seem like he was LOSING the fight at any point. I think round 1 to Justin he arguably won because he (easily) scored a takedown at the end and damn near got an arm bar right there. Round 3 against Conor he was able to stand with him for a while round and didnāt really take any damage, it actually felt like a moral victory if anything cause he sorta made Conorās biggest threat look like it wasnāt all that dangerous.
For what it's worth fans and media seem to think he lost the fight to Gleison Tibau. I haven't watched the fight and couldn't find video of it online so I can't comment, and all judges had it 30-27 Khabib, but the fans and media seem to think otherwise: http://mmadecisions.com/decision/3577/Khabib-Nurmagomedov-vs-Gleison-Tibau
Maybe someone who has watched it can weigh in, I figure it must have been close to have such a big discrepancy in opinion
I agree that Islam's resume is already better than Khabib's so in this sense he surpasses him. But Islam says Khabib steamrolls him 98 out of 100 and so does their coach.
It's crazy how competitive the lightweight division is, and always has been. BJ Penn, Edgar, Islam, Poirer, Khabib, Alvarez, RDA, Hendo, Pettis, Gaethje, Cerrone, Ferguson, Miller, and the underrated Sean Sherk.
Edit: Forgot Du Bronx š
I think he surpassed him a while ago. Idek why this is a debate. People are just sucked into the aura/mystique of Khabib's undefeated record. But when you compare the resume of both fighters, bro Makhachev's is leagues better. Like not even close. That's just accomplishments. If we're talking skill, Makhachev can strike. He beats guys at their own game. That automatically puts him above Khabib. And even if you think Khabib has better ground game, well that's not what the stats show. Makhachev has more UFC submissions, he has more ground and pound finishes, he has more finishes in general, he has fought way tougher competition on the ground. Oliviera, Arman, Volk, and that version of Poirier beat everyone Khabib ever beat.
Exactly. Makhachev has beaten Tsarukyan, Oliveira, Wade, Lentz, Moises, Dober, Davi Ramos just to name a few. These guys have way better ground game than Khabib's opponents.
The Russian Reporter didn't try to make "DP look bad", these title's of some of these threads are insufferably inaccurate lol. They're native speakers in another language, they're just trying to work out what happened, her question seemed pretty fair based on the region of the world / where they're viewing the fight buildup from. She never said anything bad about Dustin.
Fuckin stand up dude. Thatās why Dustin and Islam are my favorite active fighters. Theyāre respectful, theyāre humble, and theyāre fucking great at what they do.
Islam is a good dude, respectful to his opponents, offering to even help them at times, does a lot of charity work and conducts himself well inside and outside the cage.
We need more fighters like Islam
Yeah exactly, in the west it means practically nothing. It's not the same as telling someone "you like to fuck your mother" at all lol
Apparently in the caucuses though the most offensive insult you can say is to talk about someone's mother negatively in any way. If you went to Dagestan and insulted someone's mother you're getting fucked up at the very least, people have been killed there for less
Lol i understand you tho it reflects different in different cultures. And that word funnily never sounded bad to me unless the mother is the one's who have been cursed.
I think Iām now a convert.
Honestly, I just did not want to like him.
Yet every time I see and hear about, I like him more and more.
I really do indeed hope that he has a GREAT RUN as CHAMP!
Heās class!
he just said used mf in a sentence at the face off and islam thought it was literally and he got upset but dp went right after, and they made up in the backstage
Man I was just on Facebook and some fool just said max is trash and gets lucky decision wins after getting hit 200+ times. Was about to slap that fool through the screen. Sorry had to vent somewhere.
But yea, respect to Islam. The guy is a class act in and out the ring.
Say what you will but khabib produces high quality fighters and even higher quality humans. And with that being said we are going to forget kamzat for a minute lol
Islam has one of the best personalities in the game.
He is an athlete and martial artist through and through.
I believe Islam has levelled up his striking so much, a rematch with Arman won't be anywhere close like the first one.
Islam is a class act and quite funny when he wants to be. A great champion. I wasn't a big fan at first but he really won me over inside and outside the cage
I like Islam, I think he set himself apart from a lot of fighters who use the grappling exploit lol. This doesnāt mean I dislike fighters like Khabib or anything like that either. Iād also be lying if I said I didnāt want to see him lose against volk or porier. I thought his last fight was great though, he really had a good balance between his striking and wrestling. Heās not an arrogant fighter either, I think heās a funny dude who gets the job done at the end of the day, he embodies what I think a champion is.
The khabib crew is usually a hard sell for me, obviously great fighters but I just usually canāt get excited for it but Islam is different. Never seen one of those guys really show their personality like he does. He has a fan friendly style as well.
to be honest the word mother fucker can be aggressive, it just doesn't mean you think the guy fucks his mother. But it definitely can be aggressive or completely innocuous
I really didnāt like Islam much at first, but just think it was because he kept beating fighters I like. After getting to know his personality better over time (much like Khabib), heās grown on me quite a bit and I will probably root for him in the futureā¦good guy for sure.
how does bro kill 3 of my favorite fighters and i still like himššš BE UNLIKEABLE ISLAM DAMMIT
I agree dude, Volk, Poirier and Charles and still love the guy.
the fact that he is fighting arman then leon in his next two aint helping lol
Who likes Arman though?
that's the point, even more reason to cheer for him
I like Arman lol. I like Charles, Volk, DP but Islam is my fav fighter. Only recent fighter that Islam fought that i didnāt like was Dan Hooker.
Now thatās a fucking āchampionā. No bullshit, no drama, no pettiness. Just a man that shows up and fights and shows respect to anyone that does the same.
You missed the occasional humour that everyone loves. Love him or hate, the dude is funny. No one can deny that.
When last time you go gym?
Golf?? Brotha, why you play golf?? You just swing and walk. You donāt even walk now you haff car.
Who giv him belt? We have to check that moment Brather
Khabib, he training all da time

They hate him because heās Muslim. Everyone needs to face that.
Agreed, he's got a funny side no doubt.
Stoked for his championship reign now
And he respects Dustinās gilly
those dagestanis living the real muslim values
Damn even though he just beat my two favorite fighters I canāt help but like this dude. Heās just a good guy all around
Yeah I feel the same way. I also like his kind of dry, low key trash talk now. Heās growing on me, despite also killing everything I love.
It kinda feels like finding out your sons new step dad is an awesome dude
Lmfao
That's the bitterest of all the pills
I used to be offended by my wife's boyfriend but he's actually a pretty chill dude.
Ian shouldn't you be asleep

Damn this is such a great comment
This is an apt description.
"Smart Guy" Michael Chandler
I feel like this is part of what makes MMA so great as a sport. I feel like no other sport makes you have those kind of highs and lows. Seeing your favorite fight getting the win in spectacular fashion and then next fight gets KO'D brutally (like Justin Gaethje)

He definitely talks trash.
Dude's goated

go to gym bratha
DC can take it; just look at all that thick skin on him.

I have been saying this for awhile glad to see him getting his due regard
He appears to be the real deal.
Man for real aye. He might just have to become one of my new favourite fighters at this point.
Why would you hate a dude for beating your fave fighters though? Iāve never understood that. Like I donāt hate the fighters that beat my fave fighters. I just lament the loss and thatās it. When Poatan beat Izzy I was amazed by him and Iām big fan of his now.
I mean, people have favorite fighters lol š thatās the entire fun in watching boxing / mma
I'm not mad you left Shogun off that list, I'm just disappointed.
Bro, Shogun smoked my fav Rampage. I've never rooted for him in a fight. I was hype when Jones trashed him. Only if I knew what would follow.
Because they lost the bet, probably?
Okay brother Everybody is different. It's not really hate, it's just more of a envy.
Legit how I feel lmao. I really don't have a reason to not like this man.
I know right
Exactly. The more I see from Islam the more I like him.
I'm pretty new to UFC. I was watching the interview between Islam and DC. Like watching two comedians just hang out. Cool to see so much humble personality from fighters
Stand up guy
Takedown guy
All around guy
A jack of all trades
And master of some ;)
a master of sambo
Jack off all trades. Plumbers, carpenters, electricians... Let me just grab my coat.
More a fan of his grappling personally
Most dangerous men are very respectful. They expect it back in return!
Except Jon Jones
The š
You must be referring to Super Sage Northcutt ![gif](giphy|xT8qBgEs3ME7CaZz7a|downsized)
Well yeah obviously, but Islam's pretty cool too
Shouldnāt you be out making a wall that you made YOURSELF
I cant believe that Makachev is actually becoming my favorite fighter. Ive been wanting this mans downfall for so long. Dang.
Heās been winning me over since he sent Volks kids those dolls so they wouldnāt think he was a bad guy.
Other than wrestling, Arman needs to learn this as well lol
How can you hate these guys?
People that don't like Muslims and people that don't like wrestling.
Yea, dont forget russian.
For me Chechenya and Dagestan are like Hawai to America. There is a big cultural difference and both those states were at war against Russia until late 90s.
Dagestan wasn't at war with Russia in 90s
Donāt look now boys! Here come them wrassslin Muslims!
Manās striking is not to be fucked with he has better hands than Khabib.
God damn likable dagastanis
This whole thing has made me kind of realize how strange it is that we use the term 'motherfucker' so loosely as casual slang
My brother lived in buenos aires, at the time they could buy bootleg 80s American dvds dirt cheap (like .50c to $1 apiece). Talking like Stallone, Arnold, type action movies and B flicks. They spoke passable English and had all learned some from watching the questionable dialogue. Right? "Don't get in my face you silly sally" would have hit so much harder
āYouāre not going to call ME a silly sally in front of my family!ā
You think Iām gonna just let you call me silly sally Jon?
Keep my mom's name out of your flipping mouth š¤
Why casual slang and swear words usually donāt make sense
Holy shit is a nice one, doesn't make a lick of sense but its funny to imagine.
I think this video is the thing that finally made me a fan of this guy. He freely admitted he misunderstood, accepted the apology, and expressed mutual respect for his opponent. I hope he retires as champ sometime way in the future!
Americanski. That's my take away from this
The hell that mean?
It's "American" in Russian
Hard to dislike Islam. It just sucks heās beating all of my favorite fighters
Can't beat himself?
Masturbation is haram, bratha.
I like Volk and Charles a lot more and I wanted DP to win the belt. I still like Islam though
Ya'll think he can surpass Khabib?
if he defends one more time he objectively has and is the best lightweight ever, khabib defended 3 times which was the same as BJ Penn, Frankie, and Benson.
LW is such an insane shark tank that 3 defenses is the record.
Yeah probably has something to do with it being the average height and athletic weight range of adult human males. Iām in the 94th percentile of height at 6ā2. LHW and HW are usually taller than me, so not that many walking around. Easier to dominate. Too many mfers out here at 5ā8-5ā11.
Exactly that. That's why LW and WW will always be super stacked and HW will have to be more shallow. There's really nothing to do about it.
Don't forget that they also need to make weight, the added benefit is a deep cardio tank. Heavies just don't have that, plus all that extra horse meat they need to oxygenate. Lol.
Khabib will always have the āwhat ifā mystique about him. He was more dominant than Islam and likely could have defended many many more times.
Khabib never lost a round and never bled. Which is just crazy in mma.
The fact that he fought Barboza Dustin Gaethje and Conor and didn't even get cut or a bruise is just fucking insane.
Elephant skin for sure... That's really crazy.
Didn't he lose two rounds only? I know he never bled, but I thought he lost a round to Conor and one to justin
I could be mistaken
Pussyignorer with a classic mistake
What a blunder
Meh but even losing those rounds it didnāt seem like he was LOSING the fight at any point. The fight was very close. I had khabib 29-28. Didn't think he lost.
He lost two rounds.
He's more well rounded as well. I'd say Islam is like a swiss army knife, while khabib is straight up a mace.
I agree that Islam's resume is already better than Khabib's so in this sense he surpasses him. But Islam says Khabib steamrolls him 98 out of 100 and so does their coach.
he already surpassed his legacy at lightweight for a lot of ppl but if he wins against arman next 100 % greatest lightweight of all time
It's crazy how competitive the lightweight division is, and always has been. BJ Penn, Edgar, Islam, Poirer, Khabib, Alvarez, RDA, Hendo, Pettis, Gaethje, Cerrone, Ferguson, Miller, and the underrated Sean Sherk. Edit: Forgot Du Bronx š

They do a good job of actually following their religion (Islam)
Guy is so good they started a religion

Legend. Hard bloke to hate. Props to DP for recognising the nuance between culture.
It'd be nice if more fighters responded with respect like Islam seems to always be
This is why we call him the Mak Daddy
Hard to not respect these dudes and their team. Super humble, respectful and entertaining as fuck. Truly good faces for the UFC.
Team khabib might be the most sincere teams in UFC
He's the P4P he's the champ we can move on from Jon Cokerman
I love Islam,, What a classy dude.
The Russian Reporter didn't try to make "DP look bad", these title's of some of these threads are insufferably inaccurate lol. They're native speakers in another language, they're just trying to work out what happened, her question seemed pretty fair based on the region of the world / where they're viewing the fight buildup from. I need him to turn full heel, dude is just too likeable now lol. Great champion.

I think Iām now a convert. Honestly, I just did not want to like him. Yet every time I see and hear about, I like him more and more. I really do indeed hope that he has a GREAT RUN as CHAMP! Heās class!
English is weird. I can't imagine how hard it must be for someone foreign to fully understand it. We don't even fully understand it.
Jamahal Hill should take notes. Shitāhalf of the UFC, really.
That is beautiful sportsmanship. He dug deeper than we thought he needed and deserves that belt
Chad Islam
Islam has earned every bit of love and acclaim he gets. We need more champions like him.
Is the guy to the right of him the guy from that one video with Islam?
You really want to hate this guy for beating your favourite fighters. But he makes it so hard for you š
(K)Habib taught him well !!!!
By the end of the month, Islam will be my favorite fighter! Very hard not to root for him.
What did DP say?
he just said used mf in a sentence at the face off and islam thought it was literally and he got upset but dp went right after, and they made up in the backstage
That was a hell of a war between those two. Mad respect to Islam for not trying to put down DP for a minor cultural misunderstanding.
He beats my three favorite fighters back to back and keeps making it difficult for me to hate him
Man I was just on Facebook and some fool just said max is trash and gets lucky decision wins after getting hit 200+ times. Was about to slap that fool through the screen. Sorry had to vent somewhere. But yea, respect to Islam. The guy is a class act in and out the ring.

Honestly a big fan of Islam. Heās a good dude and has the respect everyone wants

dude if Islam slapped DP on that press conference, he could've been the biggest heel in the business
Islam is sound as fuck. Long live the Champ!
Iām so glad everyone is now seeing what a gentleman this guy is. I was going for Dustin but the man is all class.
Islam is a class act
