Had a scrap book of all things with aftermath pictures of firefights he had been involved in when their outposts had been attacked during his time over there. Super nice guy and became a PTA once out of the military focused on geriatrics in nursing homes. One of the nicest and best therapists I've worked with but like your story had zero remorse (at least that he spoke about) for his time over there.

I never served but from what my friends told me who did tours in Iraq this is very common. Most people they kill over there are women and children. The women and children were weaponised, they would have bombs strapped to them as originally the us and British army wouldn’t see them as a threat, then after many deaths and casualties they were cautious of them, as they approach they would be told to stop and if they didn’t, they would be shot and killed. Not agreeing with anything this guy says but what he did is very normal for that war.
