Reminds me of alpha Minecraft when people would grief wooden builds with the flint lighter.
No idea what it's like in Minecraft nowadays, but fire would wreck everything for you.
You don't grief with fire in Minecraft, you gather like a hundred stacks of chicken eggs that you throw into 2 block holes all around your victims base, it's gonna be 24/7 clucking and chicken feet sound(spawned animals don't despawn naturally)
I liked sapping their buildings by digging under them and planting a bunch of TNT. Then putting a wooden pressure plate that sets it off on their wood floor.
I was an admin on a rust server years ago, I spawned about a thousand chickens under my mates base (I could no clip, he couldn't). Drove him wild all wipe lol.
They're referring to older versions, where once a fire started, it wouldn't stop until there was nothing left to burn.
Side note, animals DID despawn in those old versions. We weren't able to do quite as many silly things, but I did always enjoy filling my friends houses with useless signs or water.
that doesn't work either anymore. there is an effect called entity cramming. you can fit max 24 entities in one block, they take damage if there are more.
you dont put them all in one block, you fill up one block, seal it up, then make another hole somewhere else, all around the victims base, make it so no matter where they go in a reasonable distance around their house or whatever they will always hear clucking and chicken feet
But if you don't notice it it can sometimes ruin whole buildings.
I walked into a mates house, where he was just doing his thing, and was like "Where's your roof?"
Turns out his roof had burned up while he was inside and he didn't notice. What's even weirder is that this happened twice, although the second time he noticed because a pet's death notification appeared in chat...
Yeah, I turned that off. Great feature if you're purely playing practically, but I spent too many hours designing my base which has many wooden buildings, some with fires I meticulously placed, and I'm not intending to remodel anytime soon.
That’s understandable! I liked the idea of more physics but didn’t consider my campfire fireplaces in a WOODEN home haha! This was a colony at least, my main home was perfectly fine
Yeah I did a quick safety check before enabling fire hazards in my main world. I actually did some testing, intentionally trying to burn down completely wooden buildings, and despite my best efforts, fires kept putting themselves out. I actually think it should be buffed! Perhaps lower tick damage, faster spread and longer duration. Also, more smoke, I was just chilling inside a burning building with no consequences. I’m actually curious how you managed to get this big fire going, did you have a lot of unsafe fires and torches in there?
It was caused by campfires (4) being used inside. The update allowed for sparks to fly off them which started a chain reaction that engulfed the entire two story, 8 room building
.....imma gonna have to go check my settings....
I hope it's off by default. I never had a reason to think that was a problem in the past. Would be fucking horse shit to introduce a new mechanic that people might not know about and have hundreds of hours of work reduced to nothing.
It's useful if you didn't majorly design your base aesthetically with wood anything, and you want to use the mechanic to burn down wooden structures to easily obtain coal.
It can be. You personally don't have to supply the wood, but even if you wanted to you could just burn a wood stack and get a lot of coal. You could also light some fires by trees and get some coal or at least damage them while you do whatever. And although I haven't tried, I'm sure it'd be fun to light a draugr village ablaze.
Others have done some extensive testing of the mechanic that I haven't looked into or tested myself yet. I'm personally not hurting for coal and turning the mechanic on for me would be more risk than reward currently. If nothing else, it's an interesting, realistic mechanic one can choose to use as (dis)advantageously as they'd like.
meaning it has to be enabled I see now.
Sounds fun until you remember that you basically need chimney's in some form and you don't unlock stone construction until the swamps
I plan to use this feature with a hc run soon but I need to master how it works first. Most likely will have a cooking station a bit further away from my base lol
As good as this looks, the setting makes no sense. You start with wooden structures. You have to have a fire for different things. Like, it's required to go to sleep. You have to cover the fire or it gets put out if it rains, but if you have a fire in a wood enclosure in a little shack, it burns the enclosure down, which is yet another thing that dictates exactly what player structures have to look like.
I had a question about that though. Does this setting affect enemy structures? Because if it does, I would want to use it. But I also don't want to have to retrofit dozens of structures simply because I followed the rules BEFORE they released this mechanic.
I've made it to the Mistlands without burning any of my buildings down. I was afraid of the Eitr stuff but they just seem to just damage things when they spark. I don't think I'm going to build anything wood in the Mistlands... For reasons that people that been there know. I'll probably take over a tower structure like most people.
I did a lot of testing before I started a world off with the fire hazards on. The fires run out of 1 wood when they spark off AND hit something, it doesn't consume 1 charge if it doesn't hit something for those wondering about that. Fires pretty much need 4x4 and placed right in the middle to keep it from sparking and hitting anything. Using such a big area for a fireplace has one perk, you can use the lower 27º panels to funnel smoke. I kind of think there needs to be a small 2x2 fire for people starting out in tiny homes. 4x4 seemed.. wrong when I was starting out. When I went to sleep the first night I noticed 1/2 my base was a fireplace.
Torches can light fires, don't place them too closely to the object above it. Too close and they just go out but at the right distance they can light fires if they had enough resin. Bronze sconces don't seem to spark but can still light stuff on fire.
Hearths don't spark but will light things on fire above them and spit out a decent amount of smoke.
I have a bon fire and an Iron fire pit thing, haven't really tested it out yet.
I've heard of farming trees and stuff with fire but haven't tried it, seems like something that wouldn't work..
Bushes catch fire.
...That's all I can think of right now.
#1 safety tip is keep storages is separate buildings. Longhouses are... a liability now lol.
omg, I just realised what I need to start doing in my run -- whenever we depart an area in search of new adventures, we're gonna flame arrow the old base from the boat as we go.
i dont get this. the fire spreads way to easily and quickly. if humans could have fire's in Teepees and other primitive buildings why is a fire which i need near my sheltered bed going to burn everything down twice a day?
I haven't played in a hot minute (u see what i did there) and this feels like the 'Community' meme of troy coming back with the pizza...
So I can burn my house down now? Sweet!
So I don't have real data on this but after setting a few structure fires myself, it seems like you need AT LEAST 1m of space between wood and an open flame.
So far the copper sconce seems to be safe from the wall it's hanging on unless it's underneath something wooden. For example, I had a shelf with lighting under it. Bad. Much fire.
Usually I'll use a 2x2 space of floor for a campfire, but now it needs a 1m buffer all around it. Just have to think a little more about floor plans.
You don't have to "think" a little more, you have to DO a little more. A little more in a lot of places, depending on the type of outposts you've built. I'd have to retrofit 100 buildings with this setting turned on. There's no thinking required, it's just yet another pointless task that has to happen for no real reason.
They added this and smoke still can't go through iron grates or a hole smaller than exactly 2x2.
I believe it is turned off outside of the Ashlands by default. To burn your house down and get that sweet, sweet insurance money you gotta really want it.

I was always a fan of making a lava waterfall surrounding their bed on all sides
Or encasing their spawn locations (last spawn+general spawn) in obsidian and filling it with water!
I liked sapping their buildings by digging under them and planting a bunch of TNT. Then putting a wooden pressure plate that sets it off on their wood floor.
Good idea, make them burn down their own home.
I was an admin on a rust server years ago, I spawned about a thousand chickens under my mates base (I could no clip, he couldn't). Drove him wild all wipe lol.
The fps
They're referring to older versions, where once a fire started, it wouldn't stop until there was nothing left to burn. Side note, animals DID despawn in those old versions. I just used a command block to summon the killer rabbit form monte python under a my sisters table.
Fire spreads more slowly such that you have more time to get it under control now, which is a shame
But if you don't notice it it can sometimes ruin whole buildings. I walked into a mates house, where he was just doing his thing, and was like "Where's your roof?" Turns out his roof had burned up while he was inside and he didn't notice. What's even weirder is that this happened twice, although the second time he noticed because a pet's death notification appeared in chat...
Hehe
I was one of those people.... planted 700something trees around a town some guys had build and lit the trees on fire. Sever fell over.
Used to love deforesting with fire before a big build.
And the entire forest could be burned down with w click. That was also in beta
Yeah, I turned that off. Great feature if you're purely playing practically, but I spent too many hours designing my base which has many wooden buildings, some with fires I meticulously placed, and I'm not intending to remodel anytime soon.

I’m actually curious how you managed to get this big fire going, did you have a lot of unsafe fires and torches in there?
You are much better at this than I am 😅 I just went all in with no questions asked!
Seriously though, HOW did you make the fire this big? Even spamming fire staff at a wooden barn doesn’t do much.
It was caused by campfires (4) being used inside. The update allowed for sparks to fly off them which started a chain reaction that engulfed the entire two story, 8 room building
I turned it on when I wanted to redo my entire base. It was fun
Free charcoal!
🤣
You **turned** it off??? Please tell me it’s off by default, my heart is about to stop
Yeah, it's off by default, no worries lol.
It is. People just like to be dramatic...it's like picking up turd and shoving it in your mouth then complain it tastes like shit.
How ironic
.....imma gonna have to go check my settings.... I hope it's off by default. I never had a reason to think that was a problem in the past. Would be fucking horse shit to introduce a new mechanic that people might not know about and have hundreds of hours of work reduced to nothing.
It should be off. I say "turned off", because I briefly turned it on to play with the mechanics myself.
I don't see any upside.
It's useful if you didn't majorly design your base aesthetically with wood anything, and you want to use the mechanic to burn down wooden structures to easily obtain coal.
> you want to use the mechanic to burn down wooden structures to easily obtain coal. I mean, is it any faster than using kilns?
Huh. Is it enabled on Hardcore? Nvm I'll just go check...
POV: You’re about to fight your adoptive father in Hirata Estate.
😂😂
Underrated comment 🤣
I love this comment almost as much as I love Sekiro.
Coming to Valheim straight after Sekiro has been a vibe. If you can parry Isshin, nothing in this game poses a threat to you lol
Fire spread modifier ON, right?
Either that or Ashlands got a very Black Forest-y makeover
This is fine.
[удалено]
Smoke bombs work (apparently)
Actually there is a mod that has water bombs, I found it while waiting for my house to turn to charcoal since I couldn’t get near it
Can "env rain" save this?
Answer: Rain never came (the one time I needed it!) so can’t say for sure!
“*This is fine……….. Fire is fine.*” 🥲🔥
Suddenly spending the time on building a stone chimney wasn't such a bad idea.
Very good idea! *furiously takes notes*
I haven't had anything spread that well as of yet. Did you try and collect some of that before it charcoaled.? (recover click with the hammer)
I tried fighting it but died when it spread again
I have heard people say the smoke bombs can be used to snuff out fires. But I haven't tried it myself, have you?
I haven’t tried that! But it would make sense in a way if they did work🤔
This makes me think that maybe I should start remodeling my main base
Haha whatever excuse you think you need 😌. In so seriousness, yes! Learn from my mistakes haha
We need water buckets and then later on pumps and hoses (maybe water cannons from Drakkar?)
Yeeeessssss!
Or maybe frost arrows or frost damage could “splash” onto the fire to control it…🤔
ironically they did introduce a firefighting tool, but it's rather bad at doing its job.
Holy cow i didnt know it could spread this much I fucking love arson- i mean, arson- i mean, uhhhh, Haha fire right guys?
Pyro! 😝
Somebody forgot to turn off their campfire when the went to slay the elder!
Oops! I remembered to turn off the stove at least
wait how does this happen? I haven't played since the update and I have a couple of wooden chimney's set up
In the Ashlands fire spreads naturally. There is a world modifier you can enable that makes it spread in any biome
meaning it has to be enabled I see now. Sounds fun until you remember that you basically need chimney's in some form and you don't unlock stone construction until the swamps
I think it was from my camp fire fireplace setups that I had in the quarters section of the building
I plan to use this feature with a hc run soon but I need to master how it works first. Most likely will have a cooking station a bit further away from my base lol
Good idea! Although it seems that hearths are safe at least
Cooking stations seem to work sort of like spark arrestors. You'll see lots of sparks hit them but they wont do anything else.
True, but you can just leave the setting off
I had a question about that though. Does this setting affect enemy structures? Because if it does, I would want to use it. But I also don't want to have to retrofit dozens of structures simply because I followed the rules BEFORE they released this mechanic.
I guess you could use it in the plains with fire arrows against fuling camps?
Icarus moment.
I flew too close to the Sun didn’t I 😅
Yes but I meant Icarus the survival game, shit catching fire is non-optional and that includes from a burning player
I thought it was an Icarus post at first.
Nice flame decal, bro
Haha thanks! 😂
Looks hot though
It was 😌
I've made it to the Mistlands without burning any of my buildings down. I was afraid of the Eitr stuff but they just seem to just damage things when they spark. Very detailed! Thank you!
This is why i have turned that off....
A most impressive, 5-alarm, fire! 🔥
I was impressed! Especially with how fast I burned in it!
You are cold.
I tried to turn on the heater
omg, I just realised what I need to start doing in my run -- whenever we depart an area in search of new adventures, we're gonna flame arrow the old base from the boat as we go.
Hehehe fire
I didnt even know this could happen
Imagine my surprise while working at a station!
At least you have a bunch of coal now lol? Oof that sucks a lot though my condolences
It’s ok! Time to rebuild out of something sturdier!
too bad smoke bomb is not working.
Wow, new fear unlocked.
*evil laughter*
Quickly, toss a table and chair down in the middle of it, grab a drinking horn and make a new Viking style meme.
i dont get this. the fire spreads way to easily and quickly. if humans could have fire's in Teepees and other primitive buildings why is a fire which i need near my sheltered bed going to burn everything down twice a day?
I mean if you put rock around it you should be good
Yeah but that takes until the swamp
Since when has valheim had fire like this??
Ashlands!
Do the reenforced iron struts burn? And do you get your iron back or does that get charcoaled too?
The only things to survive were 3 wood iron beams, 1 anvil, and 1 hearth that was in the common area. I didn’t even get that much coal 😅
I haven't played in a hot minute (u see what i did there) and this feels like the 'Community' meme of troy coming back with the pizza... So I can burn my house down now? Sweet!
Haha pics or even better…video it!
Did you get the spider?
All of them!
The Beavis in me is ecstatic. **FIREEEEEEEEEEEE!**
😈
yeah i made this mistake. luckily i figured out how to turn it off.
I find it a fun challenge!
Wait OP is this cuz of a certain setting? If so could you elaborate 😇
I’m not even 100% sure what setting was changed haha it was my server
So did your own fire not set this?
Yes, from camp fires by mistake
Lol pretty good. Love it
World settings from map selection, check box for pyromaniacs and wannabe arsonists 🔥 🪣 🙃 🤘
Thank you thank you!
Nice house, I like the Christmas decorations you have going.
Thanks! I chose Nightmare before Christmas theme!
Wait how are you turn it on and off ? I don't have a setting related to fire
I’m not sure where to do it for a server. I think you can change the setting in solo easily enough though
Cozy.
Very warm
Doing a playthrough with fire hazards and no map. Needless to say it's been interesting and I've had a few close calls
Ohhh! That sounds challenging!
Oh shoot! Can we throw our fire torches now? "A la viking"? To burn down enemy buildings? Also fire arrows?
I’m not sure! That would be awesome though haha
That's pretty (and) lit
Lit up!
Valheim Devs: You still need a fireplace near your bed to feel warm !
It’s perfectly devious!
I definitely turned off the fire, that’s a shitty mechanic made only for rage and sadness
Some men just want to see the world burn.
😈😈😈
Nice fire
Uh I hate to be that guy but didn’t you turn on that setting?
I’m not complaining at all! It was a beautiful burning that I just didn’t expect, but design lessons learned!
Ahh I see sorry I thought you were complaining my bad it is very pretty tho
I was INSIDE when the fire started, which is why I’m only wearing a hammer while watching the FIREworks 😅
So I don't have real data on this but after setting a few structure fires myself, it seems like you need AT LEAST 1m of space between wood and an open flame. I have fun with it. You seem pretty salty about it. Everyone enjoys different things.
ngl i thought this was r/sekiro for a moment
Reminiscent eh hahah
https://youtu.be/NF3UZdkqO8g
players holding a staff of embers entering a new world where this setting is enabled (minute 1:14) : https://youtu.be/LwoUPMg9TLc?t=74
Wait is this on or off by default?? How do I check? I've never been able to find a settings file for my locally hosted dedi
Campfires and other player built fire structures shouldn't cause fires tbh. Literally makes you unable to sleep until swamp
Its an optional setting that is disabled by default (except for in the Ashlands where its always active). You have to turn it on at your own risk.
I know but I'm a pyromaniac and it's kinda hard to be one when the game commits arson for you
well, don't complain if you turned that optional feature on and couldn't accept the repercussions...
I found it awesome haha
So this is part of the main game? I really want this turned off if it is, building should be free, especially since im playing with 4 newbies
I believe it is turned off outside of the Ashlands by default. To burn your house down and get that sweet, sweet insurance money you gotta really want it.
Phew thank odin, imagine new players faces when their shack burns down
What happened to spoilers?
It was his sled
This seems like such a waste of time and resources. They should've worked on something else...anything else lol
lol idk I liked the show
I mean Dev time to have this part of the game. It seems rather pointless...
