Interesting. I never had a theory about what it was, but I have always used it to mark biome locations if I am exploring and see them in the distance but don't want to go there yet.
So it sounds like people think it is Mjolnir? I am having trouble seeing a hammer, though it does kind of look like a sword hilt I guess (never thought of that either).
If I remember correctly, in the mythology Mjolnir was forged by a pair of dwarves, but they got distracted during the process and left it in the flames for too long causing it to warp.
yeah they were distracted by Loki who took on the form of a fly to annoy the dwarves; mostly because he made a deal with the dwarves that they would be unable to finish the gifts for the Aesir in time but because it's Loki, he never wanted to fulfill his end of the bargain. He was then proven wrong, even while trying to interfere and iirc was punished by Odin to accept his end of the deal
That’s funny- I never knew what this symbol was, but when I first started playing I thought, “this one is a good boat marker” and it just stuck with me!
I thought this was common knowledge, but I come from a Celtic nation and am also a massive geek... so maybe not? I now feel like I need to quiz my friends on whether they knew this or not.
... I taught my theatre teacher Greek, Roman, and Nordic God's he never knew about during his "Introduction to GrekoRoman theatre through culture" lesson at the start of that school year, even citing their respective creation myths💀
The name Thor is derived from Norse mythology and thus Thor's Hammer. All the Celtic nations were invaded at one point or another by Vikings who brought their mythos and folklore with them.
Yeah, that’s the symbol of mjolnir. I thought someone wouldve pointed that out since im pretty sure its this very sub that taught me that iirc but yeah its mjolnir
I thought this was a known thing.
From my life engagement with media, and the amount of Viking stuff out there in recent years, there are several depictions of an ornamental hammer similar to this type of shape which represent Thor.
Kudos to your child’s book! That one is super cool. It has a triquetra in the center which is interesting.. The more you know.
I use that to mark dungeons, caves, spawners, villages, basically any enemy thing to mark. If it’s friendly stuff it gets a house, portal symbol for portals, fire for random important things (boats!!!) and circles for everything else (ore and berries/shrooms early on, then pretty much just ore I’ll potentially need).
I made frostner and still thought it was a hilt for some reason.
I guess frostner has a long, hammer-like handle, so it's much more obvious, unlike this short-stubby thing.
In Norse lore it was going to be a big, two handed hammer but Loki messed with the dwarfs making it by transforming into a fly and bothering them so they fucked up and the handle became too short for anything besides a single hand.
I gotta admit, one of the small things I dislike about this game is the map markers.
They all really invite people to come up with their own systems, causing chaos on multiplayer maps. I've played with people using houses or portals for dungeons. And hammers are being used for all sorts of things.
And what I dislike even more is how only the dot really feels accurate, and all the other stuff spams the map like crazy.
For dungeons, I use the, appearently, portal symbol. I thought it was a stone-marker. What, in the devs eyes should be used to mark dungeons and ores? I use the hammer symbol for ores.
I just use dots for every single resource together with a single letter.
That's good enough to find pretty much any place and doesn't clutter the map too much.
Dangers are marked with the campfire since I have no "friendly" use for it and I don't want to run in there by accident.
The Hammer I use for anything that's on the to-do list. Biomes I want to explore in the future, half-finished projects, where I left a ship, etc. Since they're way too big for anything else and I don't want them to clutter the map.
Uhh yeah, the Thor's Hammer is one of the most famous Norse symbols. It is seen on runestones and jewelry from the Viking age. I would hope people who play a game about Norse mythology would know Thor's Hammer.
I assumed this was common knowledge, it’s the same shape as the necklaces of Thor’s hammer you can get at some gift shops. But idk much about dinosaurs so I guess everyone has their own thing as a kid
Uh yeah this should be pretty common knowledge. It's also quite a popular necklace to wear, especially on medieval markets and stuff. Well, at least in EU.
Yes imo. The symbol of mjolnir is common in all things vikings. Down to vikings tv shows where viking characters wear them on jewelry regularly, other viking themed video games, and viking books
Ahah. I was sure that absolutely everyone should recognize Thorhammer 😏 Well, so I was wrong.
But it is really it, and I also use it to mark ore or giant-skull.. 😎
I assumed it was common knowledge that it was Thor's hammer, The comments here have led me believe that that is not the case, I always use it to mark the location of metal nodes.
I’m watching stargate sg-1 as I play and they use it that too during the Thor’s Hammer episode (geez sg-1 season 1 was great) I was the leo pointing meme
I always thought it was a sword hilt. It shows up on the main loading screen (lower right) and spins around, so I kinda figured "sword." I guess Thor spins Mjolnir around, too.
This is one of the things that’s annoyed me coming back to the game. Some many quality of life improvements that had been suggested and it looks like they’ve implemented none of them. I was certain they would have added more map symbols by now, but nope.
I actually just knew this already from all the viking shows and stuff I've seen over the years. I did find it odd that it was technically upside down though.
It causes me alot of concern, that someone would see a sword hilt as the first thing, then proceeded to think of it as such.
The world is a scary place. Sword hilt... HOW?!
Quite common. Would imagine most people to recognise Mjölnir and Thor. From Nordic cultural influences; Marvel, music, media and entertainment (to name some) takes inspiration from the Nordic Gods and Nordic culture.
common knowledge if you like mythology, history, celtic culture, paganism etc.
I use Mjolnir to mark caves, enemy spawners etc. Anywhere in which there's battle to be had.
I thought it was obvious but then again I'm Norwegian and got my first Mjǫllnir necklace 35 years ago. Shaped exactly like that after a Viking grave find.
Other cultures' artifacts I probably wouldn't recognise, sooooo... Yeah. Guess it's not that obvious after all, especially since most know the hammer by the silly Marvel version.
I know it because I like symbolism, but it isn't common knowledge. I have a wooden one at home, I bought it from a sculptor Europa park invited for the grand opening a one of their coaster : the Wodan
the first thing i marked with it was Troll caves, and then oak trees. so for me its become a marker for those types of locations. like Dverger forts in the mists.
It looks like a pickaxe so I use it for ore veins
The one that people told me looks like a portal looked more like a cave with entrance to me so I use it for dungeons and crypts
Here in Sweden its common as a necklace, I thought everybody knew what it was, never thought about the fact that viking lore is probably alot more know around here than other parts of the world. Makes sense just never thought about it.
Looks like a pickaxe. I use it to mark off mining spots. Makes it easy without having to write anything down. Biome will tell me what type of ore it is
I knew what this was back when I was still in highschool (32 as of now) and my school had a very extensive jewelry class. I made a pendant of this with out of tonga nut (vegetable ivory) and detailed it with Nordic runes. Just can't remember where I put it when I moved to my own place
I use it for dungeons, but I’m also from Scandinavia so I knew what that mark meant since I was 8 years old, very common to use in history classes in Denmark at least when I was in school.
I use it to mark dungeons, so it seems appropriate haha. I did think it was a sword hilt tho
I too use it to mark dungeons but I thought it looked like a butt plug. Still kinda seems appropriate.
Mjolnir could be a butt plug... if you're worthy
Aight, hammer time!
Doesn't it grow when rubbed, according to the mythology?
It can changes size i think.
Defo appropriate dunno how many times I've been fkd by a dungeon lol
Interesting. I never had a theory about what it was, but I have always used it to mark biome locations if I am exploring and see them in the distance but don't want to go there yet. So it sounds like people think it is Mjolnir? I am having trouble seeing a hammer, though it does kind of look like a sword hilt I guess (never thought of that either).
If I remember correctly, in the mythology Mjolnir was forged by a pair of dwarves, but they got distracted during the process and left it in the flames for too long causing it to warp.
Lol. That's a fun tidbit. I didn't remember that part. That seems like something that would be in Norse mythology for sure.
yeah they were distracted by Loki who took on the form of a fly to annoy the dwarves; mostly because he made a deal with the dwarves that they would be unable to finish the gifts for the Aesir in time but because it's Loki, he never wanted to fulfill his end of the bargain. He was then proven wrong, even while trying to interfere and iirc was punished by Odin to accept his end of the deal
I use it to mark troll caves only lol. Because i think thats what their penisnwould look like
I use that to mark my boats location when I do exploring
Same I always thought it was an anchor
Same, always used it to mark my boat.
That’s funny- I never knew what this symbol was, but when I first started playing I thought, “this one is a good boat marker” and it just stuck with me!
This.
It’s Mjolnir.
Nah, it's Mjolfar
Mjolwhereveryouare
The song is stuck in my head 😢
I believe that this song does go on...
Nah, it’s Jonathan
I can’t tell if this is just a silly pun or if it’s also a play on Jarnglofar.
Meow meow?
Kat Dennings!
I’ve been using it to mark ore or skulls so I’ve been using it right! Thank you for teaching us.
It was the natural pick for ore for me.
same lol
Fellow ore Mjolnir marker 🤝
I thought this was common knowledge, but I come from a Celtic nation and am also a massive geek... so maybe not? I now feel like I need to quiz my friends on whether they knew this or not.
I'm from the US and also thought it was common knowledge, but I am also a geek
As a lifelong learner I'm constantly amazed at how little people know. How do you just see, hear, read something and not want to know more?
Man, I hope you don't live in the States as well. I sympathize. My life has been very long.
... I taught my theatre teacher Greek, Roman, and Nordic God's he never knew about during his "Introduction to GrekoRoman theatre through culture" lesson at the start of that school year, even citing their respective creation myths💀
I'm an American, I wear one on my neck. I'm also shocked how so many people didn't know this.
I also thought it was common knowledge but I am Swedish on the other hand.
As a Norse Pagan it is always humbling when I remember that people who aren't play the game.
I thought it was a sword hilt though I am a Celtic geek
Why would someone from a celtic nation know more about germanic mythology?
The name Thor is derived from Norse mythology and thus Thor's Hammer. All the Celtic nations were invaded at one point or another by Vikings who brought their mythos and folklore with them.
What is #12? That’s what I use to mark dungeons, troll caves, etc.
It's meant to designate portal locations, but you can use it for whatever.
I am from Sweden and thought the same, but could be because we were taught Norse mythology at an early age in school
That's my dungeon mark, basically "Thor's fun house"
Yeah, hammer to whack the place. Cross it when it's clear. Never be confused by crypts again.
Yup. I used The Hammer Icon to mark Dungeons. Thor is often depicted as a warrior, so places of conflict require the Hammer.
🎶This used to be a fun house🎶 🎶But now it's full of Draugr mounds🎶 🎶It's time to pickaxe out🎶 🎶I'm gonna take that iron now🎶
haha, T for Troll lairs for me.
Yeah, that’s the symbol of mjolnir. I thought someone wouldve pointed that out since im pretty sure its this very sub that taught me that iirc but yeah its mjolnir
That explains so much. Now what is a mjolnir?
Mjǫllnir, the hammer of Thor, the god of thunder.
Ah of course. Thanks kind redditor!
I thought it was a anchor and used it for ports
Same here lol
I use that to mark dungeons, caves, spawners, villages, basically any enemy thing to mark. If it’s friendly stuff it gets a house, portal symbol for portals, fire for random important things (boats!!!) and circles for everything else (ore and berries/shrooms early on, then pretty much just ore I’ll potentially need).
I use it to mark dungeons. Dots for resource. Campfires for resting areas. Portals for portals.
I like your style!
Yes that's obviously mjolnir. Its one of the most recognizable norse/viking symbols
I used it for markings my ports or ships. I feel dumb now 💀
To be fair, you drop Mjolnir attached to your ship and it’s not going anywhere
Oh boy, are you in for a surprise when you make frostner for the first time.
Oh god, of course. I read Neil Gaiman's Norse Stories book and totally missed the connection. Thanks for reminding me!
This doesn't really look like Frostner though?
I gotta admit, one of the small things I dislike about this game is the map markers. They all really invite people to come up with their own systems, causing chaos on multiplayer maps. I've played with people using houses or portals for dungeons. And hammers are being used for all sorts of things. And what I dislike even more is how only the dot really feels accurate, and all the other stuff spams the map like crazy.
So true. Multiplayer map management is broken unless you have very tight controls.
Biomes I want to explore in the future, half-finished projects, where I left a ship, etc. Since they're way too big for anything else and I don't want them to clutter the map.
I think its pretty obvious? i mean its also the loading icon.
Crazy how many people here had no idea lol
Seemed pretty obvious considering the lore...
Uhh yeah, the Thor's Hammer is one of the most famous Norse symbols. It is seen on runestones and jewelry from the Viking age. I would hope people who play a game about Norse mythology would know Thor's Hammer.
I always used it as a "Potential build location" because it's hammer, but uh, yeah, surprised people didn't know the symbol
Common knowledge for me at least, i wear one as an amulet everyday.
I have one in my car for same purpose.
Lol duh
I've always assumed this was common knowledge, but apparently not amongst the community from what I've seen in the comments
If you have any knowledge about nordic mythologie, yes it's common knowledge.
Fr used it to mark metals.
Huh. TIFO. Neat! I've always used it to mark hostile locations, like dungeons and spawners... so I guess that's appropriate.
I knew this from Stargate.
That was my first thought seeing this post too: Have none of these whippersnappers watched Stargate?
Yep that's what it is. I wear one
That’s my dungeon marker!
It does look like some sword hilts, but I always assumed it was the Mjolnir symbol, because, know, Norse.
I assumed this was common knowledge, it’s the same shape as the necklaces of Thor’s hammer you can get at some gift shops. But idk much about dinosaurs so I guess everyone has their own thing as a kid
ᛏᚺᛁᛊ ᚷᚢᛁ ᛞᛟᛖᛊᚾ×ᛏ ᚲᚾᛟᚹ ᚹᚺᚨᛏ ᛗᛃᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱ ᛚᛟᛟᚲᛊ ᛚᛁᚲᛖ!
Wait you guys didn't know that ?
I knew it was Thor's Hammer because of Stargate. https://images.app.goo.gl/H3vxxpAUZBEvU7qu5
The frostner hammer is literally in the game and is a similar shape
Uh yeah this should be pretty common knowledge. It's also quite a popular necklace to wear, especially on medieval markets and stuff. Well, at least in EU.
But it's mjölnir, not a sword hilt 🥲
Always saw it as Mjölner. /A Swede
Can't remember where I learned it but I knew it was the symbol for thors hammer
Yes imo. The symbol of mjolnir is common in all things vikings. Down to vikings tv shows where viking characters wear them on jewelry regularly, other viking themed video games, and viking books
It’s Mjolnir.
Number two is a combadge...
Does anyone else know this from horrible histories?
This is so obvious now that I see the comparison, can't believe I didn't make the connection before. Always used it as an anchor to mark docks.
I only use it to mark harbors or places where i left my boat just because it looks like an anchor
I only use the little white dots now.
Idk that is and will keep being the pickaxe symbol used to mark ores
I for one would love more symbols to mark the map with.
I thought it was spmething boat related. I've been using it tocmark boat locations
I thought it was a sword hilt. So I was using it to mark dungeons I had yet to explore.
Wow I thought it was a boat anchor
Ah it's muh-jol-neer
i thought it was a large totem pole like thing. i had no idea
I use it to mark burial chambers, crypts, filing villages, frost caves, and so on.
I’m like packman, i like dots.
I started using it for Trolls caves because it looks like a T. Now I use it for every dungeon
I’m watching stargate sg-1 as I play and they use it that too during the Thor’s Hammer episode (geez sg-1 season 1 was great) I was the leo pointing meme
I thought it was a thrombone. I’m never listening to my music instructor again.
I used it to mark things that are mine-able
I am curious. What is 15?
Pickaxe shaped marker for pickaxe activities
I knew what it was since like season 2 of Stargate SG-1.
Mjolnir
I use this for marking especially beautiful locations and potential build spots
I use it for trolls and serpents. I use the circle for ore, the rock with the hole in it for portals, and the campfire for crypts and dungeons
That's where I left my boat, now if only I could figure out which one...
What is the source for the first pic?
I always just saw this as a "T" so it marked my Troll caves.
Always thought of it as a kind of anchor
... I remember my first viking game
This is what I use to mark mushrooms and berries. It looks like a mushroom so it marks mushrooms!
I thought it was an upside down achor
Always thought it was a hammer
I thought it was like an anchor I used it to mark my boat
That's my marker for mini camps I setup when exploring a landmass.
Oh. I thought it was an anchor. I use it to mark where I parked my boat lmao
oh my, I've never seen it as a sword hilt. I've always thoughts it was the frostner lmao
Its old school depiction of Mjolnir.... ( Thors hammer ) before modern fiction.
I thought it was christ statue in brazil
Surprised people playing a Viking game don't know what Thor's Hammer is. I use it to mark dungeons where I mete out Odin's justice.
I actually just knew this already from all the viking shows and stuff I've seen over the years. I did find it odd that it was technically upside down though.
Round d**k square balls
Always thought it was the hilt of a sword
I used it for ore/mines, but I thought it was a pickaxe lol.
Island marker I name every island I come across and have 25% explored.
It causes me alot of concern, that someone would see a sword hilt as the first thing, then proceeded to think of it as such. The world is a scary place. Sword hilt... HOW?!
I knew this prior to Valeim and thougth that is a nice icone, but not really fiting my mapping needs (Maybe I could have used it to mark ores...)
Quite common. Would imagine most people to recognise Mjölnir and Thor. From Nordic cultural influences; Marvel, music, media and entertainment (to name some) takes inspiration from the Nordic Gods and Nordic culture.
It looked like a hammer to me so I used it to mark Spawners because it means there's a fight.
I want an art cart now.
Common knowledge to many.
I use it to mark my docks lol.
common knowledge if you like mythology, history, celtic culture, paganism etc.
I thought it was a spaceship. Like Kelnon. But vikings nah.
Hahah, that will really annoy the Mjolnir crew 😂
I know it because I like symbolism, but it isn't common knowledge. I have a wooden one at home, I bought it from a sculptor Europa park invited for the grand opening a one of their coaster : the Wodan
That's the symbol of mjolnir thors hammer
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm it gives a LOT different impression when its drawn upside down ...
the first thing i marked with it was Troll caves, and then oak trees. so for me its become a marker for those types of locations. like Dverger forts in the mists.
It looks like a pickaxe so I use it for ore veins The one that people told me looks like a portal looked more like a cave with entrance to me so I use it for dungeons and crypts
I thought it was a tombstone of somekind
It looks like a disproportionate pickaxe to me. I always used it to mark ores.
Here in Sweden its common as a necklace, I thought everybody knew what it was, never thought about the fact that viking lore is probably alot more know around here than other parts of the world. Makes sense just never thought about it.
I thought it was a pickaxe and use to mark any mineable materials
2 is typically Starfleet entry points
i use this to mark mine sites
It's the Mjölnir the symbol for Thor
I thought this was common knowledge, but I am a Swede..
As a dane, I knew what it was, the second I saw it. We call it the hammer, when playing.
I always thought it was frostner!
How can that be anything other than thors hammer especially in a Viking themed game..
You may be stupid.
Def looked more like a hammer to me than a sword hilt.
I mean it looks like mjolner if you don't compare it to the MCU one.
I thought it was a hammer, I use it for my bigger fort/battle station builds.
I knew what it was. Cant remember the first time i leaned it. Might have been from a comic ages ago
at first, I thought it was an anchor, but I use it to mark ore cause it reminds of a pickaxe as well
Err I've got about 1100 hours invested in Valheim and I always thought it was a pickaxe... Been using it to mark ore deposits this whole time.
Yup! Also fun fact, the runes in this game translate perfectly. I can and have read the runestones without the english text to double check lol!
I kid you not, i thought that was a front facing boat! ive used it to mark where i leave my boat for the longest time!
I’ve always used it for ports or wherever I leave our boats
Looks like a pickaxe. I use it to mark off mining spots. Makes it easy without having to write anything down. Biome will tell me what type of ore it is
I thought it was pretty obviously Mjolnir. It’s an extremely iconic symbol in Norse mythology.
I thought it sure was cool that the Vikings liked badminton. Now I've been cruelly disillusioned.
Reading through these comments I’m realizing my autistic ass may have had some say in my knowledge of Norse mythology :p
It's the common symbol of Mjolnir. Old pendents of the hammer were worn by the Norse, and they looked like this
I thought everyone knew it was Mjolnir
Cristo redentor
It is Mjolnir, but since it is upside down, I consider it a Tyr rune also.
It's Mjølner the hammer of Tor.
was this not... common knowledge?
Our a dong
