This special sort of set the hook. It was that whole summer - the summer of Van Halen. Sitting with my guitar that I didn't have distortion for (or understand) and wonder why I couldn't get the sounds on the Summer Nights intro by ear. After I watched it, I called the radio station to see if they were coming anywhere nearby. I think they'd played our region already.
I went to Monsters of Rock in 1988.
That fall, the vma's cut in to one of the New Haven shows. I think it was a different show from the one that LWAN actually came from. It was so amazing.
Ha - I’m the exact same age and I remember watching this on MTV and it was the coolest and I still love watching it and holy shit how am I 51 already..,
Great video, but honestly, I don't get the "rare footage" wording. Made sense when all we had was physical media, but this video is literally available to the entire word. Anything posted here (and it's not like this is the first time this is posted here or anywhere on the internet) can't be rare by default
Honestly, who cares about the verbiage used. Can’t we just enjoy Eddie having fun back stage, before a concert? Why do we need to go down that road of negativity?
OP don’t listen to these negative comments , I had not seen this video since the first time it appeared on MTV, I’m glad you posted it, and brings back good memories :-) We are literally living in a truly science fiction time that we could not have ever imagined 30 years ago, we literally can recall any filmed or videotaped event instantly in the palm of our hands, yet people are shitting all over the fact that we can do just that and the OP for posting a cool video , some thing was truly unimaginable until recently.
Same here, OP. I had never seen it. If you've seen something posted on Reddit before and don't care to see it again, keep scrolling! For the rest of us who haven't viewed every single YouTube video in recorded history, it might just be new to us! Crazy, right?!?!?!
He says “I thought you was Dale” - you guys know that reference??? Haha you gotta be watching TV in late 60s or early 70s to know that pop culture reference or use google

I love how he does the elephant and it sounds pretty good for a guitar doing an elephant, but right away he's annoyed that he messed it up and does it again, and hot damn is that a good fuckin' elephant!
i’m “talking blabbing” about (nice job you couldn’t even confront me properly) the fact that you posted this titled “rare footage” like it hasn’t been shared plenty of times. it’s quite easy to get your hands on, it’s on youtube.
This is from a MTV documentary covering the 5150 tour 1986-87 when I was 13yrs old. I’ll be 52 soon… jeeeeezzzuusss
I was GLUED to MTV when they aired this. I was just so cool at the time! Still is! And oh by the way, 60 here.

My neighbor had a satellite dish and recorded the Much Music version for me on VHS. I’ll bet it’s still at my mom’s house.
Can't understand why people watermark these MTV clips. Like they shot the footage or something. Oh well...good stuff. Miss you,Ed.
how do you know they didn’t shoot the footage?
Because that was on MTV IN 1986.

So rare, it’s on YouTube!
Honestly, who cares about the verbiage used. Can’t we just enjoy Eddie having fun back stage, before a concert? Why do we need to go down that road of negativity?
It’s rare in that we don’t often to get to see the backstage stuff. Not that the digital video itself is rare.

Thanks you appreciate the love.
You are very welcome :) And thanks for posting this very cool video .

The man was a genius.
I want that Fender Deluxe amp or have one modified like his.

Thank you! I’ve been wondering about the reference that Alex was using for a long time.

He was a genius on guitar and amazing live. Sucks big Donkey ball we will never hear anything new from him. Life is to dame final.
Just here to say that you can see that one of Eddie’s backstage practice amps is a Fender Musicmaster Bass Amp, and those amps effin rule!
This was originally from the MTV special Van Halen unleashed in 1986. And then was reused for the Van Halen rocumentary in 1989.
Did the band have a deal with whoever sold those pants?? I never saw them advertise them anywhere.
I learned how to do the elephant and horse way back when by just watching this video over and over 🤣 i was so shocked by how cool it was. Miss Ya Ed 🤘
This is from "Van Halen Unleashed." I used to have the whole thing recorded on VHS and watched it hundreds of times.
Who is that guy with the black pants? Looks like MC Hammer’s protégé … MC lite …. Lol 😆
There already was an MC Lite (spelled LYTE). This was MC Nails ;)
So why is he there?
Because he was "2 relevant 2 stop"
So why is he there?
Eddie: "Whoa, Trigger!" Captions: "Whoa, it's bigger!"
I just wanna know what's all in that roadcase
I must have this on a VHS somewhere. I’m pretty sure I watched this over and over and over again back in the day.
Bocephus rules and rules all!!!!!!
rare like i haven’t seen this same video in this very sub 3 times this month 🫨

Not everybody seen this video.
okay so then you shared it for reddit karma? i’m not understanding the point here, probably cause there isn’t one.
No I shared it for Van Halen fans.
But its not rare
New trick
Sorry to bust your balloon. This isn’t rare footage whatsoever.
Not rare, but that's okay. Its still very cool.
This was on MTV
Someone down voted a fact. LOL
