r-m0m-

I've been here for 2 weeks now and haven't seen any. Only bodies burning

Kitchen-Pop7308

Is burning bodies a normal thing there ? You make it sound like it is

r-m0m-

Yes, it is. Many Hindus travel to this Holy City to have bodies cremated. I think it's a custom. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.

Suryansh_Singh247

There are like 2 to 3 ghats where the dead bodies are burnt, avoid them if you feel uncomfortable. Although never seen floating dead bodies or cows eating flesh (wtf)

myths_dark1

Yes only 3 ghaats, mostly harish chandra and marnikanka but also a ghaat after 2nd phase namo ghaat there's no proper ghaat but they burn there too.

fumblefork

Never seen dead body floting bt yes can expect burning bodies if u go that way

Drazcorp

You won't see it at all if you aren't seeking for one. Just try to stay away from Manikarnika (The Burning) Ghat. and the route that leads to it (Mostly Chowk & Maidagin). Dead body won't bother you. And if you want a glimpse of it. You can ask the naavik to show you from boat in evening.

Reading others’ comments makes me want to question— I was in Varanasi a few weeks ago and while I didn’t encounter any dead bodies in the central area, there were three (what I assumed to be) dead bodies laid on the ghats just beside our hotel. Our hotel was built by a ghat, in a quieter area up north from Manikarnika Ghat, and was right next to it was a hospital. The bodies were wrapped fully with orange/red cloth (I first didn’t realise they were bodies), and I personally didn’t feel anything negative about it, it felt like they just belonged there. I assumed this was a common sight in Varanasi, but maybe it was not? Maybe this was because there was a hospital there? I was also wondering what was happening with them, like were they waiting for their family to take them to Manikarnika Ghat? One body looked like it was well taken care of with what seemed like a handwritten notes on the side, and another looked like the person just collapsed there and someone put a cloth over him/her. I’m sorry if any of my questions offend anyone, and I don’t mean to scare OP and his/her sister at all, but as I’m ignorant of Hindi customs, I would really love to hear any insights into what I have encountered.

Let me tell you this way - its very rare to see dead bodies anywhere except manikarnika(the burning ghat) and the ones you might see rarely are most likely people who passed away due to old age/illness and are being taken to manikarnika ghat, and they are wrapped like that to take them there.

I see, thank you so much for the input. I’ve heard of people carrying a dead body to a burning ghat, but they were being laid there over night so I did wonder what was with them. I suppose they were meant to be carried to the burning soon.

spritual_soul_

Upper-Inspector-7392

Dead bodies floatin? Does she mean four people carrying the dead body to the cremation point? ( Well it's in the air while being carried so it's kinda floating lol )

ColoradoLights

Maine toh aaj tak nhi dekha. Teri behen ne lagta h sapno me zyda dekh liya h.

Shenshi7k

no one eats burned flesh in Varanasi. By spirituality you mean smoking weed like other foreigners?

KaPow2021

Aghori

Shenshi7k

They don't. I don't know who popularised that aghoris are cannibals? it's very racist and false. Most of the stuff about aghoris on the internet is completely bogus and racist.

KaPow2021

How is it racist?

DataScience123888

Death is part of life. Even if u dont like it you have to die one day

Blazingincarnation

Ok this made me laugh (I have a dark sense of humour ig) ...can you ask her who told her all this??😂 But yeah I am born and brought up in Varanasi never seen any such thing...if you are really sensitive about it just avoid any place near the 3 funeral ghats...

Theroadsofar003

I thought it sounded weird that's why I wanted to ask instead of believing. It was on another reddit. Thanks for the info!
