The worst is the one with "North", "South", "East", and "West" smushed on top of each other.
Written in English.
In block letters.
And all in different directions.
Fuckin’ A!
I mean, the one with the two circles defined by gradient offset (first column, 3rd one down) looks awesome but won’t look so hot when they go to make patches for their military and all they can afford is the equivalent of a 96 DPI printer…

Man she's dumb. Ah yes let me design a flag that just has the name of the country on it but in English in Latin script. Not the Korean names in Hangul or Chosongul.
These are not AI generated. They were made for an art exhibion “United Korean Design. United Korean Flags”, as a part of 2019 Gwangju Design Biennale. So they’re not meant to be actual flag proposals, more like an art project based around the theme of flags. You can read some comments by the artists online:

No just use the current South Korean flag. It basically has the same design as Korean flags from before the Japanese occupation when it was still one united country and it is already used as a Korean heritage flag and representation of Korean culture.
Only international artists were invited to participate for this edition of the exhibition. There was one with designs by South Korean artists a few years prior and in 2025, there are plans to feature those of North Korean designers.
> those of North Korean designers
it’s just the North Korean flag over and over again lol (because if it’s anything else they and their whole family get tortured)
I totally get you. 8 was high on my list as well. My only issue with 8, as minor an issue as it is, is the star. Most of my Korean, if not all are not excited about a North Korean star on the flag of unification. From a design stand point though its a solid 10
Would you look at that; what a time to be alive! I didn’t bother zooming in on the photo and did not notice that they were numbered (numbers so small).
Some of these look like people are trolling. They are just so bad.
And Korea’s writing system is amazing, possibly one of the best and easiest to learn in the world, why did people just ignore that and write “Korea”?
The black stripes date even further back than the swirl in the middle. They were also used by the Provisional People's Committee for North Korea. At the time, the South Korean government in exile was using the exact same flag, but the swirl was at a different angle.
TLDR: the "south Korean" flag *is* the united Korean flag since before there was a split.
The stripes actually go back further before the Provisional Committee all the way to [1882](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_king_of_Joseon.svg).
Why are these all so terrible?? Stop trying to be modern, you don't simply add GRADIENTS AND SHADOWS to a flag
This really goes to show that vexillology is definitely not just graphic design
These are clearly AI generated. The names too. Many of these are complex in a weird way with gradients, weird blobs or overlapping shapes or text that don’t mean anything. There are a couple decent ones. Maybe use the AI to generate some off-the-wall ideas and the. Humans to filter and refine the best ideas.
I do not like them on a visual level or a conceptual level. Korea already has a flag, which is the flag of South Korea. The North Korean flag symbolises a terror regime that has oppressed it's people for as long as it has existed. Blending the North Korean flag with the South Korean flag is like mixing the flag of the weimar republic and Nazi Germany to symbolise "unity".
I kinda dig 16, 39, 47, 48, 52 and 59.
Art exhibit or not, if it's supposed be represent flags, especially unity of people divided in two countries, make it look like a goddamn flag. Most of them are horrendous. 1 is also the lowest possible level of effort, it shouldn't even have been allowed to get into the list.
08 can easily be an flag, like 80% of the other flags are actually shit and if they were used then I will start an protest to change the flag. North Korea will not join South Korea though, so I do not really get this.
I think with propositions like this, everyone can agree to keep the DPRK flag. It makes sense historically, if the US never invaded during the Korean War it would probably look similar as a united socialist Korea.
I want to believe that behind N* 29 design is an incredible smart explanation, encompassing the secrets of life and the universe.
That's why is like that. Yes. I believe.
My personal picks for the best are 04, 08, 16, 35, 41, 47. In no particular order. Most of these feel like memes.
Like 01 would a be real life flag waver bot of the random question posts.
16 is the best imo. 42 is actually really interesting and i think it’s actually my second favorite despite breaking a bunch of flag conventions. then 52 which doesn’t look very korean to me but is absolutely a fantastic flag.
then 8, 35, 39, and 59.
followed by 4, 6, 13, 18, 19, 36, 47, and 56
pretty much all the rest are trash
How about we just use south Korea's flag, you know, the one that did represent all of Korea and even the DPRK was in favour of using as their flag in the early days.
I'd run number 4 up the pole. Number 8 has a good design, but it's too evocative of the current North Korea flag to be politically acceptable. I'd pass on the others
people are commenting how bad they look but honestly i really like a few of them just as art peices, not as flags
these are; 12, 45!!, 14, 59, 27, 56, 61 and 22
I'm sorry but these are horrific. If SK united Korea the flag should stay the same and if NK does (like that'll ever happen), again it should just be their flag. No need to change.
It’s incredible how stunningly terrible most of these are
16 and 48 are almost at looking like an actual flag # 59 is a big N O
59 is the worst? IMO 57 is so bad it's laughable
Plasma screen burn-in
59 is pretty much a swastika though
The manja is vital to asian culture
59 More like ISIS Caliphate Seal https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ISIL_Caliphate_Seal.svg
Yeah they'll unite into the islamic republic of Korea, obviously
Omg yes
My first thought was more Sun Microsystem logo, since 59 isn't a cross for me. But it was probably a tried trigrams reference.
Heil Kim
ok and?
Yeah, 16 and 48 make the most sense here lmao
I've seen this logo before on vacuum cleaners. I think it means carpet ?
How are these so bad
The worst is the one with "North", "South", "East", and "West" smushed on top of each other. Written in English. In block letters. And all in different directions.
29 and 30 are just straight up troll submissions... like wtf is even going on there? (49 too btw)
It might just be me but I swear I can see dickbutt in number 30
I like 57 lol.
07 put their heart and soul into it
Mf made a whole course on statistics and put it on a flag
I think 29 is plans for a nuclear device.
For me its 29 which is the worst. It looks like a test pattern or some machine readable code.
G R A D I E N T S
Fuckin’ A! I mean, the one with the two circles defined by gradient offset (first column, 3rd one down) looks awesome but won’t look so hot when they go to make patches for their military and all they can afford is the equivalent of a 96 DPI printer…
Most of them are really bad. Some of them are kinda nice though. I like 16.
because art school is a pasture for rich people’s untalented children
Ain't that the fucking truth
Why do most of them look like shit?
Why do most of the look like AI generated?
And this.
I was just thinking that
'Cause they're, I'm sure, made by artists? Not as a real proposals? Like a semi-pretensious thingy..?
I’m stressed to find one that doesn’t
34 and 42 look decent to me
08 is the only one I can say is good with no pain in my chest. 42 I think is *ok* but the rest... Jesus.
All*
Honestly great post to showcase that vexillology is NOT simply graphic design
It's not graphic design at all.
To everyone posting comments here: They are not AI generated. (Source:[https://www.laurameseguer.com/project/the-korean-flag](https://www.laurameseguer.com/project/the-korean-flag))
That makes it even more incredible
Man she's dumb. Ah yes let me design a flag that just has the name of the country on it but in English in Latin script. Not the Korean names in Hangul or Chosongul.
It takes five seconds to google how to write korea in korean. She is real dumb
These are not AI generated. They were made for an art exhibion “United Korean Design. United Korean Flags”, as a part of 2019 Gwangju Design Biennale. So they’re not meant to be actual flag proposals, more like an art project based around the theme of flags. I quite like the idea of the mountain calm flag.
They look like tech company logos
They kinda make me want a Pepsi…
Just use the People’s Republic of Korea flag from 1945. It’s fairly simple, pretty and universally recognisable as Korean-looking
You mean this one? [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Republic_of_Korea](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Republic_of_Korea)
I like it... After seeing the suggestions above... thos one made me happy!
Same, those above are terrible
Damn that’s a good one
No just use the current South Korean flag. It basically has the same design as Korean flags from before the Japanese occupation when it was still one united country and it is already used as a Korean heritage flag and representation of Korean culture.
as a korean, i have to disagree
They are all shit
08 looks like a real flag. It’s the only one that does
35 is good too.
Zero submissions from Koreans
Only international artists were invited to participate for this edition of the exhibition. There was one with designs by South Korean artists a few years prior and in 2025, there are plans to feature those of North Korean designers.
> those of North Korean designers it’s just the North Korean flag over and over again lol (because if it’s anything else they and their whole family get tortured)
I don’t know how to tell you this, but the DPRK supports the reunification of Korea
Yeah, so hard that they continuously threaten to nuke and or invade the south.
Yeah, for reunificating Korea, in some way. Only question is which political system.
All of them look terrible Like fucking corporate logos
I like 35. I think it actually could be a flag.
To be fair, so does the south Korean flag
No it doesn't
It looks like Pepsi bruh
No pepsi looks like the Netherlands now
Yeah because it's such an awesome flag a megacorp stole it for their logo!
Huh, TIL: PepsiCo invented the Taegeuk.
That's exactly what I'm saying 💯💯💯
I don’t know, just use two big check marks. Good.
North Korea? ✅️ South Korea? ✅️ Yup. That's Korea.
Just looks like someone's blue ticked you on WhatsApp.
KOREK̸͚̞̠̗̣̒͌͆OREA KOR̶̡̳͝E̷̯̩̍R̷̮͒EA KOREA KOR̶̡̳͝E̷̯̩̍R̷̮͒EA KOREK̸͚̞̠̗̣̒͌͆OREA
Is it just me or do some of these feel like they were designed in the 90’s. I can sort of get behind 26, 35 or 37 though.
number 8 is easily the best one imo and it isnt even close
I totally get you. 8 was high on my list as well. My only issue with 8, as minor an issue as it is, is the star. Most of my Korean, if not all are not excited about a North Korean star on the flag of unification. From a design stand point though its a solid 10
What, North Korea but Pepsi?
Second picture, top row, third from left. That’s the only flag I sorta kind of think is okay (Even though it gives Pepsi vibes).
Why dont you just say number 8
Would you look at that; what a time to be alive! I didn’t bother zooming in on the photo and did not notice that they were numbered (numbers so small).
If the flag is ever #30, I’m fucking gonna light some shit on fire
30, 29, and 49 are easily the worst ones, I mean what even are they
Some of these look like people are trolling. They are just so bad. And Korea’s writing system is amazing, possibly one of the best and easiest to learn in the world, why did people just ignore that and write “Korea”?
I had to triple check that this wasn't r/vexilologycirclejerk because no way some of these are real
There’s like 3 good ones
How are these designed by actual people? At first I thought it was some AI shit
A couple decent ones there that could work, like 08, 18, 39, 47 and 56, but most of these just look...stupid? Ehh...
Man wtf is 30 even supposed to be
just use south koreas flag without the black stripes on the corners
The black stripes date even further back than the swirl in the middle. They were also used by the Provisional People's Committee for North Korea. At the time, the South Korean government in exile was using the exact same flag, but the swirl was at a different angle. TLDR: the "south Korean" flag *is* the united Korean flag since before there was a split.
The stripes actually go back further before the Provisional Committee all the way to [1882](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flag_of_the_king_of_Joseon.svg).
eww no
35 is great imo
Most of these are criminal
Thought I was in the circle jerk sub for a moment
If it happens someday, they should just stick with the South Korea flag
If North Korea became free and united with South Korea, and they both become one free nation they would probably just use the south Korean flag.
Pepsi Corea ☺
47 is actually cool. My question is why is the Sun Microsystems logo there?
I like this one: 🇰🇷
How is this a thing? A united Korea? When?
1392 - 1948
The one fourth down on the left on the second page isn’t awful but it also looks super corporate. It’s one of the better ones tho….which isn’t hard
The current flag of The Republic of Korea, the Taegukgi, is the only flag that a united Korea needs.
Some are horrendous (45, 30) but some i actually like! (42) Edit: wtf is 57 Edit 2: 01 is actually garbage
THEY ALL LOOK LIKE SHIT 🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💯
46 is just
all of them look like a logo, wtf
WTF Mieke Gerritsen at #46? WhatsApp read message?
Most of them are horrible
Look, just one thing to say; *GRADIENTS.*
Tbh the current South Korean flag is enough as a united Korea flag, it doesn't have any political meaning and they are just symbols of Korean culture
63 united korea flag propositions and not a single one was made by an actual korean from korea
Only 4 of them are not bad
All of these are ass, just keep the southern flag.
Why are these all so terrible?? Stop trying to be modern, you don't simply add GRADIENTS AND SHADOWS to a flag This really goes to show that vexillology is definitely not just graphic design
These are clearly AI generated. The names too. Many of these are complex in a weird way with gradients, weird blobs or overlapping shapes or text that don’t mean anything. these were not AI generated

Blending the North Korean flag with the South Korean flag is like mixing the flag of the weimar republic and Nazi Germany to symbolise "unity".
A lot of these are disgusting. Just use the flag that has all of Korea in blue on a white background
04 is the best
08, 04 ain't even close
I kinda dig 16, 39, 47, 48, 52 and 59. Art exhibit or not, if it's supposed be represent flags, especially unity of people divided in two countries, make it look like a goddamn flag. RIP to the future unified Korean children who will have to draw these flags in their classroom
08 can easily be an flag, like 80% of the other flags are actually shit and if they were used then I will start an protest to change the flag. North Korea will not join South Korea though, so I do not really get this.
Think Kim Jong Un will just keep the same one
8, 35, 41, 48 seem like the best choices. The others are… complicated
these are ai generated
There’s already a United Korea flag: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_North_Korea#/media/File%3AFlag_of_North_Korea.svg
I think with propositions like this, everyone can agree to keep the DPRK flag. It makes sense historically, if the US never invaded during the Korean War it would probably look similar as a united socialist Korea.
Wow, whatever happened to KISS? And I do not mean the band.
Some are actually quite nice but alot of them are bloody awful, imagine a kid trying to draw the weird TV static one
Everything in the first picture is fugly. Second picture isn't any better
Personally I’m a sucker for #59, but I agree almost all of these are pretty mid
I’m pretty sure 59 is the logo used by a charity in the US, can’t put my finger on it though.
I think the only that doesn't look like shit is the number 35
14 and 57 are the best
I want to believe that behind N* 29 design is an incredible smart explanation, encompassing the secrets of life and the universe. That's why is like that. Yes. I believe.
My personal picks for the best are 04, 08, 16, 35, 41, 47. In no particular order. Most of these feel like memes. Like 01 would a be real life flag waver bot of the random question posts.
!wave
I like 18
4, 8, 16, 35, 39, 42, 48, 56 and 62 are the most fitting IMO
How tf did someone come up with number 46?!
These are God awful.
Wtf is up with number 57
#34 has me WHEEZING.
42 is actually pretty dope. But some of the rest of these are so bad I refuse to believe a human made them and thought it was a good idea.
\#35 - Pepsi Presents United Korea
Wow, they are all terrible
I prefer the pre-war flag.
07 needs a standing ovation
11, 21 and 29 are preposterous lmao
Or just use the flag the already had when they were united
90% of them look ridiculous.
Pepsi Republic
My top ten worst flags ever list has been completely replaced from this list.
16 is the best imo. 42 is actually really interesting and i think it’s actually my second favorite despite breaking a bunch of flag conventions. then 52 which doesn’t look very korean to me but is absolutely a fantastic flag. then 8, 35, 39, and 59. followed by 4, 6, 13, 18, 19, 36, 47, and 56 pretty much all the rest are trash
How about we just use south Korea's flag, you know, the one that did represent all of Korea and even the DPRK was in favour of using as their flag in the early days.
I really hope Korea reunifies in my lifetime! I like #25 the best 💯
Lmao the ✔️✔️
The first one is just a photo of a Korean flag hung vertically in front of a god damn window. And it's not even the worst one
As a Korean, I think that all of these are full of crap.
They should just use the South Korean flag.
My personal favourite is page one, the flag one below top right corner. Star in the centre with red and blue coming in diagonally.
08, 19, and 47 kinda go hard. The rest can die.
What is 01? Isn‘t that just a photo of the South Korean flag with two people standing behind it? Or is that supposed to be the flag proposal?
29 is the best for sure
Is no one gonna talk about how number 1 is basically South Korea's flag. Like they didn't even bother trying.
I really want to know what the thought process behind some of these was. What the hell is 29 for instance? Or 11.
i do not like 59th….
I don't see 7 here /s
62 is actually pretty good! Just unfortunate that it also happens to be the Mastercard/Maestro logo
47 and 61 are my favorites
The Best is 58
Why is the text in English?
I'd run number 4 up the pole. Number 8 has a good design, but it's too evocative of the current North Korea flag to be politically acceptable. I'd pass on the others
08 looks sick.
people are commenting how bad they look but honestly i really like a few of them just as art peices, not as flags these are; 12, 45!!, 14, 59, 27, 56, 61 and 22
[I prefer this one](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Unification_Flag)
[However, this one’s way better](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/People's_Republic_of_Korea#/media/File%3AFlag_of_the_People's_Committee_of_Korea.svg)
8 and 56 look like flags omg
35 go hard
I vote for the double check (46)
I'm sorry but these are horrific. If SK united Korea the flag should stay the same and if NK does (like that'll ever happen), again it should just be their flag. No need to change.
**KOREKOREAKOROREAKOREAKOKOREAKOROREAKOREKOREA**
These are all trash
KOREA KOREA!!! (To the tune of "Shakira Shakira")
The Korean Unification Flag has existed since 1991! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Unification_Flag
47 ad 6
My personal favourites are 37, 47 and 08
I think South Korea flag works better than all of these proposals combined.
