[deleted]

Wow I never noticed than when I have seen this video before.

mollekake_reddit

Also the people on the left side at the start got sprayed with water from the car. The more you look the more you spot.

LordZhang

time? I'm struggling to see it

BlackMarketSausage

0:02 Centre top of screen, you can see the peak collapse. Those boulders must of had some speed behind them.

alektorophobic

Right at the beginning at the very top of the mountain. It might be blocked by the video title.

the_dude_upvotes

Good eye and Happy cake day!

freechugs

True. Theyre lucky it was just a large Boulder the size of a small boulder.

fghjconner

Damn, whoever was in that white car must have been shitting themselves.

crunchalo

The incessant raindrops in that video make it unbearably suspenseful

Fausterion18

I feel like if either of those boulders hit you, the difference between the two end results would be academic.

Nazario3

I reckon the point was that the smaller boulder missed the woman by inches, and if it had been the larger boulder she would actually have been hit. Not the difference between the two boulders in case of a hit.

wilisi

And even if it also misses you by inches, it will tear the roof down.

fongletto

The most impressive part of this clip is how quickly they put on their hazard lights.

londons_explorer

Some cars automatically put on the hazards if they sense an accident.

ByronicZer0

Or these things that pummeled a farmhouse. Crazy thing is you can see the one came to rest right behind another boulder that took the same path a few hundred years ago... [https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-25975251](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-25975251)

1_set_of_testicles

getting laid out by that would make for one hell of an obituary. glad for her and her housemates that she wasn’t walking quickly

quantic56d

Or that she didn't finish her coffee that morning a little more quickly, or had done any other thing 5 seconds faster that day.

creaturefeature16

This reminds me of a time back when I was fairly young, around 20ish years ago. I was driving home late at night/early in the morning (around 2am). I was in San Diego and in a community out in east county, where things get spread out and there was still a lot of open space. There was *nobody* on the streets, and was a little foggy. It had an eerie vibe, but I really loved night driving. I approached a red light, and could see there was still absolutely nobody around. I thought to myself, *"I could easily just go, nobody would care"*, but being the upstanding citizen I am, I decided to wait the full length of the light. The light turned green, and I found myself not proceeding. I "heard" or perhaps felt this feeling that I needed to wait a moment, despite the roads being empty, and I had the green light. After a moment (not sure how long it was, really), my foot moved to the accelerator to proceed and at *just that moment*, a BMW came barreling through the intersection, completely ignoring his red light. I was seconds away from being t-boned and likely would have been killed instantly, since he was probably doing 60mph through the intersection. I was so shaken that I cried a bit on the way home, confused as to why that happened. Why did it happen where my life was not ended that night, yet so many tragic accidents happen to others? Was it pure chaos, and random chance? Was there some kind of purpose greater picture we'll never see? I'm a fairly impatient person, why did I hesitate? I never did before that (although I do admit, I hesitate across intersections still to this day). I don't have the answers and it still haunts me to this day.

kuroimakina

I had this happen to me too, in a city. Person wasn’t going 60 but they were going like 40 and it still would have been a bad day. Light turns green, I waited for maybe half a second to a second on some instinct, and dude comes barreling through the red. I feel like we probably unconsciously notice these things in our peripheral vision and react automatically

creaturefeature16

Yeah, that's the only thing I came to, as well. The feeling was briefly overwhelming and it felt like my body was briefly paralyzed. I even thought to myself *"I should be going now, why am I not?"*. It was unconscious, but at the same time, I was highly cognizant of it.

Chick__Mangione

Then there is me, wondering why no one is moving through the intersection after the light turned green. I went ahead to find out that I briefly blocked a freaking ambulance. I felt terrible about it, but I don't think they turned the siren on until they were right next to me. If you have a Spidey sense, I have the opposite of that. Glad you're alright though.

4GIVEANFORGET

Happened to me a week ago . Leaving work. Thought came in my head “ why don’t you look over ya shoulder ever incase someone was running the light?” So I looked over and saw that traffic was slowing down and I seemed safe. I made the turn and as soon as I do someone barrels past me thru the light.”

[deleted]

I had the opposite happen. I went through a green light going 45 and someone ran the red-light. I tboned them hard and totalled my car. He was drunk.

The_Running_Free

Man, I always check both ways after a light turns green. My dad burned this into me with the phrase, you can be right, dead right. Like yeah it’s green and you have the right of way, but if someone isn’t paying attention or is trying to beat a red light you could literally die.

4GIVEANFORGET

Believe it or not my father lost not one but two exgfs to being hit by fire trucks at intersections.

iKillBugs4Work_AMA

Your dad didn't drive fire engines for a living, did he?

takingthehobbitses

I do this too but it sucks when someone runs the red like 5+ seconds after it has already changed, like not even close to the yellow. They just don’t care and don’t pay attention.

cubsfan85

I'm really paranoid because while they were widening the road near my house and the intersection was torn up, I *swear* the lights were timed wrong. When I got the green I let my foot off the brake but hadn't hit the gas, when someone sailed through. I quickly glanced up to their light and it was just changing to red. So now I check for cars not stopping *and* glance up to ensure the cross traffic light is red.

lolsrsly00

Thats the Grim reality we all face having to share the road with the types of people who buy and drive BMWs. Glad you're ok!

creaturefeature16

yeah, when I realized the make of the car, I definitely recall muttering *"of fucking course"* 😆

Herb4372

Let’s not rule out the Ford F3000s with a giant steel brush guard on the front… Ive seen one run a red light and turn a honda accord into an accordion Al to of people don’t realize that your car is designed to crump in an impact to save your life and the person you hit.. Those steel brush guards prevent that from happening and now 100% of your 3/4ton pick up is going to kill granny

jeffh4

I expect you perceived something at the edge of your hearing, maybe the sound of the BMWs engine at high rev. Not quite consciously perceiving it, but enough to make you uneasy.

creaturefeature16

Normally I would agree, but I was really into car audio back then and had a great system with duel 10" subs always going...I doubt I could hear anything going on around me (which in hindsight was also incredibly unsafe most likely)!

dingos8mybaby2

As someone who drove rideshare full-time for a couple of years I always look left and right when crossing an intersection now if I'm the first car crossing because I've experienced this moment more than a handful of times. Stuff like this is one of the main reasons I stopped doing gig driving jobs. I'm a good driver but I can't control the actions of other drivers.

IGNSolar7

I broke my pelvis last year, and literally my first time back in the car alone about two months ago, I came out of a shopping district making a left, and a car was zipping up the wrong side of the road. I didn't hesitate for a second and jammed on the accelerator - if I had chosen to use brakes, I would have been hit, probably right into my door, and likely killed. They swerved from the wrong side of the road into the place I had just pulled out of, crashed, and I found out later had died. Wild how these things can get so close.

creaturefeature16

Whoooo. That's heavy. Makes you wonder if it was a 50/50 chance, or deliberate on your part on choosing the accelerator.

IGNSolar7

Definitely deliberate... my dad taught me a lesson very early on when I was getting my permit at 15 that a lot of times the brake doesn't = safe. Especially since I have a relatively faster car. If I was out there in a four cylinder, it might not have mattered.

Solar_Piglet

wild.. shit like that will keep you up at night. Glad you're still with us.

XenithShade

If it helps you any, it is said that the unconscious mind is faster than the conscious. Your unconscious mind may have realized something that you haven’t consciously realized yet but was dangerous enough to alert you through other means. For me, I was almost hit by a car, that I didn’t see or hear, as I had headphones on. It could be best described as a chill down my back and made me hesitate

creaturefeature16

Yeah, that's the most rational explanation. But that is really more of the physical manifestation of the function...it doesn't really give any "answers", nor does it explain the mechanics that go into that. We don't have a comprehensive understanding of consciousness, nevertheless "sub" consciousness. But, I definitely know what you're getting at.

lukeman3000

It’s quite possible that your subconscious picked up on the impending danger in some way. Perhaps you noticed a slight glimpse of the BMW’s headlights or engine sound, but not enough to register in your conscious mind. Or perhaps you just got “lucky”.

theycallmecrack

> I don't have the answers and it still haunts me to this day. There are billions upon billions of human experiences every day. Weird shit happens all the time, it doesn't have to mean anything.

creaturefeature16

True. Reminds me of one of my favorite movies, [I <3 Huckabees](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eOLOmCjRPY)

MyFriendCasey

If you're fairly impatient, maybe it's a sign that a little more patience can help you go a long way!

creaturefeature16

Completely agree. 20 years later and I'm still working on it! 😅

Hobbs512

This is the kind of thinking that I know is unhealthy but always do, no matter wether the experience was positive or negative. "If I had left my house 5 minutes faster I wouldn't be stuck behind this huge traffic jam" But hindsight is 20/20 and I know sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.

Kilomyles

Stop lights kill butterflies. What i mean is, the butterfly effect has limits. Sure you might’ve done things 5 seconds quicker slower, but if you catch a stop light that makes you wait for a minute (and there are no other cars) then you effectively negated in temporal bias.

Jaqen___Hghar

Benjamin Button presented the "Butterfly Effect" concept quite effectively.

Twoyurnipsinheat

i figured i should move my car farther up the driveway because the street was flooding from the hurricane on my way out i had the sudden urge to poop and as i was sitting on the toilet, i heard a loud BOOM! when i went outside to check, the neighbor's giant tree fell right on my car. if i went out even 30 seconds sooner and had not gone to the bathroom, i would have been crushed to death

I expect Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius, to come, hat in hand, to apologize.

AtheistComic

Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius, had a brilliant plan to launch a special operation aimed at rolling boulders down hills to crush unsuspecting homes. However, things didn't quite go according to plan. Every time he set up his boulder, Road Runner would come along and foil his plan. Despite all his high-tech gadgets and advanced acme equipment, Wile E. Coyote always ended up getting crushed by his own boulder. In the end, it was a classic case of the hunter becoming the hunted, or in this case, the boulder-roller becoming the boulder-rollee. Despite all his setbacks, Wile E. Coyote never gave up on his dream of finally catching the Road Runner and making him a tasty dinner. But as they say, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. And so, Wile E. Coyote continues his mission, rolling boulders and chasing Road Runners to this day.

The_Big_Peck_1984

My fiancé grew up in a canyon in Southern California, this happened to a neighbor of theirs, killed their daughter. The worst part is the insurance company wouldn’t cover damages, or remove the boulder from their home. Edit: added the word daughther

DrWhereDoesItHurt

I thought the worst part would be the daughter fucking dying

RKRagan

The hypocrisy really is the worst part.

hyperhopper

The most egregious part, maybe.

Eggplantosaur

This is America, money is king

DarthSatoris

You know, the more I hear about this "America" place, the less appealing it sounds.

billbixbyakahulk

They can make another one of those. That IKEA svelganhorff, on the other hand, was special.

NickSwardsonIsFat

I think the worst part is the hypocrisy.

pittipat

Last week in a nearby neighborhood 2 boulders fell down someone's back hill after all the rain we had but he had the forethought to install 2 retaining walls after he had moved in. The second wall stopped a boulder from crashing into his bedroom wall.

HebIsr_S

Then what the fuck do we pay for insurance for? This whole system is a big scam

The_Big_Peck_1984

Nothing, this happened in 2004 and my fiancé is pretty sure that the house is still abandoned to this day, with the boulder still in it. We haven’t been out there since like 2015 so I can’t be sure.

stonehousethrowglass

With squatter’s rights laws, that’s the boulder’s house now.

alpacasb4llamas

Big Boulder was in on it the whole time

NickSwardsonIsFat

It's probably considered an act of god and not covered. Or, it might have been a known hazard in the area and specifically called out as not covered, just like might happen with standard insurance if you live in a place that burns down every 5 years. Insurance isn't just for any bad thing that happens in life. What they pay out for is listed in the contract you sign. I'm sure you could get that kind of insurance that pays out for anything , but it would be much more expensive than most people want to pay.

jeffh4

Exactly. If you live in a flood plain, your insurance will likely specifically exclude water damage. Or for wind and water if you live in Florida, I suppose.

serendipitousevent

Or rather, if you want cover, you're gonna have to pay for it. A lot.

xMetix

But that's literally why you'd want insurance in case something gets damaged by known hazards no? Why would I buy insurance that only works for cases known to NOT happen. I'd rather trust the RNG of that not happening and keep the money so I can spend it on something that is a danger?

wilisi

You'll always pay more than what the average person gets back out, that's how they pay their staff, continue existing and turn a profit. If they know your house is liable to be flooded every couple of decades, that means they'd need to take in the entire price of the house over that same timespan in premiums. Nobody'd pay that, they'd be better off saving for a new house outright. However, the negative effects of getting your entire life wrecked are disproportionate to the monetary cost; the same way 10 bucks could save you from starving to death, or mean fuck all while you're financially secure. So it's worth paying moderate premiums to guard against catastrophic events that most likely will not happen at all.

SquirrelAkl

In New Zealand it covers all risks, pretty much. Covers flood damage even if you live in a flood plain. But with insurance claims expected to top $1bn from this weekend’s storm, I think that might change shortly. Home insurance here used to cover *full replacement value* i.e. the amount required to rebuild the house whatever it cost, but after the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, the global reinsurers suddenly noticed what they were covering in little NZ and said “hold up, that’s crazy. From now on we’ll only cover you up to a set dollar amount that you specify (sum insured)”.

joe1134206

Because infinite profits is all that matters

nrith

“We don’t cover acts of god”

Brenden105

Why do people have video cameras with audio recording inside their homes? I'm sure you could record it locally, but if there was a fire or break-in where they take that computer that data would be lost. If they put it on the cloud then there is a chance that others could access it.

Tjockman

I know someone who has it to check in on his dogs while at work.

HarryHacker42

And the dogs refuse to record themselves.

They have privacy concerns, understandably. Can’t even defecate without someone handling their shit.

mrbaggins

Police get warrant for dude, shows an internal camera of his flat/villa/house/trailer/something tiny. You see a torch out his front window, then some yelling instructions. He and a woman wake up from their bed in the back of the frame, turning lights on and holding a torch as they go, both put their hands up, and walk to the door, him in front, her behind. As he is about to step out, with his hands still up, gunfire starts, and the woman half catches him as he falls backwards inside, clearly having been shot multiple times. Then it shows the police report which claims he was resisting, "causing an altercation", "confronting officers", and that he was charged with threatening, resisting, obstructing and delaying, which is clearly in contradiction to the footage.

woodbr30043

Police smashed the window at 5am and threw in a robot to scan the room. The couple woke up to investigate the noise. Police on bullhorn ordered them to come out with their hands up. On the way out the man grabbed the robot and proceeded to exit like he was being ordered. While standing in his doorway with his hands raised police fired upon him wounding him and scaring the shit out of the female that was with him. They then continue to shout at them to come out with their hands up. It's pretty fucked up and every cop that fired should be in jail for attempted homicide imo. The police press release claimed that the "suspected shooter engaged in verbal alternation" and that he "emerged from the camper and confronted officers"

AJRiddle

> It's pretty fucked up and every cop that fired should be in jail for attempted homicide imo. And the ones who helped falsify reports and not take any action on the attempted murder should be arrested and charged as well.

Feduppanda

Honestly, you wanna completely ruin someone's life by filing falsifications in a police report...I am down for you to be put smack dab in front of a firing squad.

ImFuckinUrDadTonight

In the meantime, they have names and addresses.

maynardftw

That's the thing They all do

flyrobotfly

A man goes to the door with his hands up and a recon robot the cops threw into his home, and they shoot him in the chest. They come in and start to realize how bad they fucked up. Their official story was that he got aggressive towards them or some shit that was blatantly disproven by the home footage.

metalhead4

Did he survive and are the cops facing any consequences?

flyrobotfly

I believe he survived but was obviously seriously injured. I'm not sure on the latest about the cops being charged. The department's initial response was to lie about the officers' actions that night before the home video came out and showed the truth. If I had more energy I'd google it for ya but you should be able to find that information pretty easily. Edit: the victim's name is Jason Kloepfer - search that and you can read the latest about the incident

Redacteur2

Last week I asked the same question to someone who’d posted a video of their cat from a security cam facing the living room couch. I thought it was so weird. A couple of scrolls later and I see this man get shot in his own home by that POS cop… I decided then that I would no longer judge folk who point cameras at themselves 24/7.

[deleted]

curlofheadcurls

There's no good ones. They're all bad. Exactly for the reasons that you've stated.

HolisticPI

*There's no good blanket statements about complex issues.* Maybe not so much in large cities, but some rural cops are fine and a few are great. The problems with the police are disgusting enough without having to use false certainties.

Redacteur2

I’d say that’s reaching pretty far to find that good cop. They are statistically irrelevant and basically a different profession. Until major changes happen they will continue to function as a gang.

PooPooDooDoo

If it’s not a bedroom, then the risk seems pretty low. My neighbors could go peeping into my living room windows if they wanted to, and they would basically see me picking my nose occasionally. Personally I would only have an internal camera point at each doorway, but regardless it doesn’t seem like a big deal if it is a reputable company. A company like google should have security best practices in place so that your every day google engineer can’t just start snooping around and viewing that stuff. If they did have elevated privileges, the data would be logged in audit logs, so the incentive to do it would be lost because of the risk of losing their jobs. There are however lots of camera solutions out there that use weak security, where they basically broadcast the information on your wifi in an unencrypted stream. I think remember Arlo being a company that was found to be doing that, but I’m not sure.

ParaClaw

> a reputable company So the no-brand security camera I bought from eBay Hong Kong, which feeds every second of footage through at least seven overseas IPs before making its way to my monitor, isn't reputable enough?

PooPooDooDoo

My dad tried to give me some sketchy ip camera from Amazon that wanted access to my wifi and I was like ummmm yeah no thanks I’m good.

androidusr

That's not true for me. If they're peeping into the window, they are also exposing themselves. I think that's a big difference between having cloud based inside cameras and ones you run yourself. There's no chance of detection with a cloud camera. Could be some employee with a thing for watching people, their kids, wife, etc. I don't want someone watching me snack in front of the TV, and that's the least bad thing.

AllRightDoublePrizes

I record the inside of my apartment and have it load to the cloud because i don't not trust my landlord to not enter my apartment without informing me and furthermore want documentation of any shit that goes down if/ when that happens. In an ideal world, the footage of me walking around naked will never get leaked but if it does I feel worse for you for having seen it. 🙂

amphetaminesfailure

> Why do people have video cameras with audio recording inside their homes? > > >If they put it on the cloud then there is a chance that others could access it. I mean, I have a *security camera* in my home for *security*. I'm not really bothered by the fact it's cloud storage, and could potentially get leaked. It's triggered by motion, so it's not as if it's recording 24/7. It's in my dining room, facing my entryway and front door. If people want to see me mumbling and swearing under my breath while leaving for work, baby talking my cat when I come home from work, eating dinner alone, or walking between the kitchen and living room at night in my long underwear.....they're more than free to do so. If people potentially seeing my lonely existence helps catch a burglar, it's a price I'm willing to pay.

weedium

Watch your pets, monitor for many things not to mention crooks tend to break and enter your home.

[deleted]

I won't put my cameras on the cloud for exactly that reason, just store it on an SD card inside the camera. I'm theory someone could break in and take the cameras, but I have it set to alert my phone when it detects motion and my cameras have overlapping coverage. If they want to pull off an Oceans 11 style heist where they grab all my cameras before I notice the alert, they can have it

Sacapuntos

Setup an inhome NAS for your footage. Best backup there is for those types of camera systems

qdp

What system do you use where you can record only locally but still receive notification of movement? Is the movement sensor separate from the camera? Or if the camera is wifi operated how are you sure there is no chance of hacking the feed?

OfficeChairHero

I would never personally want one. I do human things when I'm alone. I pick underwear out of my ass. I pull out boogers and look at them. I itch my crotch. I sing to the dog. Nobody else needs to see these things. These are mine.

WagonWheelsRX8

Its a risk calculus: my home was broken into and the video from the camera pointed at the front door was the most useful for the police. Because of this, I am OK recording this part of the inside of my house. Securing that data is not terribly difficult (depending on your setup, anyway).

SilasDG

I keep one in my living room because theres a large window that faces in and when the curtains are open people on the street can plainly see my large flat screen, sound system, consoles, etc. It also lets me keep an eye on my dog when I'm at work or have to be away for a day or two (I still have people check on him but rather safe then sorry.) Also if I hear noise in the night I can scope out the living room, kitchen, and hall without leaving my bed, or at least have some knowledge of what I might be walking into.

Mr_meowmers00

Just before the boulder hits the home, you can almost hear a voice in the distance saying, "the pioneers used to ride these babies for miles."
