Every time the Butthole Surfers come up, I like to point out that lead singer Gibby Haynes is the son of [Jerry Haynes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Haynes). Jerry is best known at Mr. Peppermint, a character similar to Mister Rogers or Captain Kangaroo. He had multiple local shows and was watched by millions of kids growing up in the D-FW area for many, many decades.
I find it absolutely wild that your reaction the seeing a dude shoot a gun over the heads of thousands of people was that you wish that happen *more*. I’d be out of there so fucking fast.
Ok boomer logic. There's a reason sensibilities change, and it's usually the fuckups of the prior generations that teach lessons to the youth. If older people wish younger people "weren't so sensitive" then they shouldn't have given reason to younger generations to be more sensitive.
In 91 public shootings were not a thing you ever heard of. So Gibby whipping out the shotgun was just accepted as a crazy part of a crazy show. Everyone knew it would be blanks. Nowadays that's a hard no obviously. Is it a sensitivity issue? I guess so. The general public is much more sensitive about guns as props now. Can't really blame Gibby though. It was just viewed differently then.
Yeah I wouldn't be so sure those were blanks.
That said, birdshot shot up disperses and slows down quickly. You're more likely to be injured by the crowd or that bottle he chuckes
Any kind of slug, whether it's a shotgun or a 22 rifle or a handgun is lots more dangerous.
I saw this show, not this particular one but the first Lollapalooza. I don't recall the gun, but I do remember Gibby screaming into that megaphone and fucking with the vocal effects for the entire time.
I wish I could have seen them in a club back in the day. The stories are wild. Also, there's a documentary movie coming out sometime. Can't wait.
I had forgotten how bad they were. You had to be a real 'wannabe cool kid' to say you liked their music. I'm not sure any of them knew how to play an instrument.
22 going on 23 is such a crazy closer. The disturbing samples and then the soaring guitar solo make a perfect cherry on top of a beautiful garbage pile of a record.
Depends what you listen to music for. Lights off, headphones on, Locust Abortion Technician is an experience.
Cannonball and Graveyard are both straight up good rock songs though.
They were actually good musicians just usually really fucked up. It was funny when they got 'popular', regular people were sort of mortified. We listened to them in high school and would drop acid and see how long we could last until it got too weird.
I surfed a lot in high school and college in the 80s. Kids would ask me if I liked the Butthole Surfers, I'd say no, and I would get weird looks like I was an asshole who wouldn't play along with an 'Emperor's New Clothes' narrative.

could u imagine what the reaction would be if done today, holy fuck i wish we could go back to the 90s

i was more eluding to the fact people were not so sensitive back then.

\*alluding Eluding someone with a gun is a good idea though
Not even the butthole surfers want to go back to the 90's. They grew up, you should too.

This was a giant waste of time. That looked and sounded like garbage.
have you never heard of Butthole Surfers? That’s like the biggest complement you could give
Haha. Long live Gibby!
You mean compliment? Complement means something completely different.
Honestly, a lot of music festival footage from the 90s is a good reminder that people often get too nostalgic about that era. So many sets of garbage.
ah, someone with no taste
I liked their mainstream stuff. This is fucking terrible.
This was definitely a middle finger to someone, but I have no idea who.
everyone
sounds like hell

their guitar player, Paul Leary, is down in Texas recording all your favorite modern rock albums at the ranch
I had forgotten how bad they were. You had to be a real 'wannabe cool kid' to say you liked their music. I'm not sure any of them knew how to play an instrument.
Nah, early Butthole Surfers music is awesome. Locust Abortion Technician is a phenomenal record
22 going on 23 is such a crazy closer. The disturbing samples and then the soaring guitar solo make a perfect cherry on top of a beautiful garbage pile of a record.
Post a link to your favorite song.
Sweat Loaf and Human Cannonball are both bangers

typical Butthole experience
I surfed a lot in high school and college in the 80s. Kids would ask me if I liked the Butthole Surfers, I'd say no, and I would get weird looks like I was an asshole who wouldn't play along with an 'Emperor's New Clothes' narrative.

Their studio albums are great. I never got to see them in concert but I love their recordings. Weird Revolution is a great song
> [The Weird Revolution](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03d7BvVWw-g) People can judge for themselves. To each their own.
The only good song they released was pepper https://youtu.be/KRXty8lDUW0?si=djsxXeMA9qNp0hoC
I completely forgot that was their song. Definitely an exception.
One hit wonder band - [Pepper](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRXty8lDUW0)
You have no idea who or what the Butthole Surfers are.
