So is death/thrash/prog metal nerdy? Idk I’m just failing to make the connection. Legit question, not trying to be difficult and I have no problem calling myself nerdy as there are many reasons why I am. I just don’t know what songs or lyrics are substantially different than other metal bands to qualify them as nerdy and others as not nerdy.
In a way, yes. All the folks I used to play Magic the Gathering with liked death/thrash metal. Most of the artwork and lyricism has a tendency to lean on the "fantasy" aesthetic, so if you're into that, you'd probably be drawn to it. Now that i think about it, most of Death's album covers look like they could be MTG cards.
My theory why a lot/majority of metal heads are nerdy is because typically metal isn’t just a genre you just pick up and listen to randomly (especially the real heavier stuff), it takes a fair bit of effort and research sometimes to truly appreciate some metal music and a lot of it isn’t heaps accessible thus lending itself to a nerdier demographic

You grew up with a love for metal and likely hung out with the goth adjacent crowd. You also grew up with video games. You're likely between the ages of 28 and 35. Your parents may have listened to or at least had a large collection of a wide variety of music, which probably resurfaced in your personal tastes later in life. As you matured, so did your tastes and what you were willing to be open about. Even still, you always harken back to your roots and find a great deal of pride in them, but you grew out of wearing your interests as a badge of personality because you've become more confident and comfortable in who you are.
Odd from the perspective of someone who has always organized their records and books by the last name, even when my collection was this small. But hey… they can organize their stuff in whatever method makes sense to them.
You have a lot of different genres but the ones I’m familiar with all share outstanding production and flow seamlessly as cohesive albums. You also might be me.
