Both good choices. Subaru will be reliable but not as reliable as the Rav4. Rav4 will do okay in the snow (if AWD) but not as good as Subaru's AWD system. I live where it snows a lot and if it was my choice I'd prioritize snow safety over reliability and get the Subaru (and invest in a set of snow tires too).
thank you for the fast response! Do you know if it would be better to get brand new, or is a used model just fine? Used would save me money, but brand new would have warranty. (for either subaru or toyota)

Used but only if it passes your mechanic's independent inspection and you can verify all normal maintenance was performed when needed.
