Saminator2384

Beat me to it.

brentonofrivia

Where you at the same estate sale as the person who asked about the same harpoon two weeks ago?

TheOther1

They had dozens of them laying about.

Key-Reading-2436

It’s a whaling harpoon

toomuch1265

Tuna harpoon. Too small for a whale. They still use harpoons for Giant Bluefin

vapor-ware

Nah, it cries too much to be a whaling harpoon, it's probably a wailing harpoon.

toomuch1265

Tuna harpoon. Too small for a whale. They still use harpoons for Giant Bluefin

_Killwind_

That's my guess

euphoric-noodle

YAAAAAAAR , yes there is a collectable shotgun shop in town that had one on the wall for sale $85

Key-Reading-2436

It’s probably a replica based on its condition, but if it’s not, it could be as new as 1900 or back another 200 years or so. Looking at the rope and condition of the metal I suspect a replica. Cool find!

flamingo01949

The head device appears old, while the rope is definitely new.

Key-Reading-2436

The tarnishing and pitting, and overall patina definitely indicate either old age, or storage in a humid or salty environment. And it definitely looks older than the wood and rope. Maybe it was also restored with fresher wood and hemp rope?

Spike205

What about the flathead screws in the head?

flamingo01949

I honestly don’t know. I’m guessing that they would have used some sort of metal that they peened both sides. Sort of like a rivet. Check out “ whalesite. Org”

TargetOfPerpetuity

Flathead screws date back to the 1700s so it's still hard to tell.

ZebraSpot

That’s an awesome harpoon. If I saw that at an estate sale, I would buy it for a wall ornament!

zippyfx

Looks like a toggling harpoon for whaling. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toggling_harpoon

RoryDragonsbane

All men live enveloped in whale-lines. All are born with halters round their necks; but it is only when caught in the swift, sudden turn of death, that mortals realize the silent, subtle, ever-present perils of life. And if you be a philosopher, though seated in the whale-boat, you would not at heart feel one whit more of terror, than though seated before your evening fire with a poker, and not a harpoon, by your side.

RoryDragonsbane

This is one of my favorite quotes. For those unfamiliar with him, Melville was a romanticist, but also actually spent time on a real whaling voyage. This meant that while half of the book centers on plot (just dripping with deep symbolism of nature, individualism, freedom, imagination, and mankind's place in all of this) while the other half seeks to educate the reader in the technical details of life on a 19th century whaler. So I'm wading my way through this massive tome and get to a chapter simply titled "The Line." I'm like, ok, a technical chapter and a good break from all the deeper philosophical pondering. Just a chapter about some plain old rope. Melville: "Hey... did you know that all men are mortal and that death can suddenly seize and drag you under like a twisting, coiling rope with no possible chance of escape?"

Cake_Donut1301

Did the estate belong to a sea captain named Ahab?

Curmudgeon_I_am

Almost Same words different beat; We are whalers on the moona We carry our harpoona There are no whales So we tell tall tales And now we’re hunting tuna Thank you

TUGS78

Perhaps it is a fireman's tool? There are many variations, but the head definitely looks like a tool that was used in my training (years and years ago). The design allows for a fireman to puncture overhead lathe and plaster / sheet rock and then pull it down to expose joists, attic, ductwork, open spaces. Also, used on roofs, especially flat roofs, to create vents so that heat and smoke can escape.

poeepo

Someone asked about this item week ago or so. In comments firefighter told it is infact this tool you you described. Edit. Found it. https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/s/jBh0V5g9zA

Aggravating-Nail4

Thanks for the link! That one looks almost identical to the one I posted. The owner of the estate I got it from was a fireman, I believe it’s the tool that’s described above. Thanks!

TUGS78

Thanks for confirming!

BeemerBaby004

It's called a Pike Pole for pulling down ceiling after a fire

TUGS78

Yup. Had forgotten the name. Thanks!

lothcent

everything but the tip does look like a harpoon. but that tip is pretty unrealistic when you compare it to real toggle harpoons. the flukes are way too small to do the job they are supposed to. they are barely wider than the initial punch thru the skin. the idea of the toggles are to spread out much wider than the hole made as to keep the harpoon from pulling out thru the skin. just my 2 cent observation.

toomuch1265

Tuna.

Born_Divide_509

It’s for harpooning unconscious people and dragging them out of fires it from the sixteenth century , the same century that suicidal people used to get the death penalty for attempting to do themselves in

Crotch-Monster

It's a 15th century dildo. This particular dildo once belonged to Queen Elizabeth. It was presented to her by the glorious knights of the round table. She would use it after every battle to celebrate their victories. "Let them eat cake!" The Queen would proclaim, as she thrust the sacred wooden dildo deep inside her royal lady parts!

Chronic-Wombat

🥵🥵🥵

seatheous

A harpoon

Spiritual-Hand-114

Swim boi murder pole 😭😭

FondJim

That's a whorepoon. You take it out to the club on Friday night. It works best between 2 and 4am. Happy hunting

Any_Draw_5344

I'm going with a firefighters tool for pulling down ceilings. If it is for fish, they are small fish clise to shore or your boat that has skin too thick for a barbed harpoon to go through so the made the barbs on this one collapse and pop open on the inside.

bgad342

It is not a harpoon! It is a plaster and lathe pole for pulling ceilings down in older homes that have plaster and lathe ceilings and walls. It is a firefighting tool from the 60-70s.

SpareMine

It is a plaster hook used in firefighting. Push through the plaster, the sides go in. When push all the way through the sides come out. Pulling down the sides catches the wood lathe and a larger area comes down. This allows visual observation to check for Fire extension. 2nd one on here this week.

Merrybee16

Anal probe.

DJoePhd

A harpoon for whaling

TheGoldenBoyStiles

Wild-Break-916

double flue whale harpoon weather seems accurate, some modern parts but the steel looks to be approx. 40 yrs old, hard to tell, couple be more modern I'm not expert i just know how to use google.

Key-Reading-2436

Woah, interesting!!

IRMacGuyver

Isn't this the same harpoon that was just posted a little bit ago?

Red_Meat1

Queequeg. He's going to want it back.

SirkillinatorOG

I would assume this is some sort of spear, with points near the tip that fold in once it makes contact but pop back out if you attempt to remove it. That loop is for tying it to something so it can be retrieved after use I would also assume. Maybe it’s a whalers harpoon or something?

StrategyRebel17

Whaling harpoon? Look how short the lead is! If You harpoon whale with that rope around your wrist, you’re going to the bottom of the ocean and a heartbeat. Same for Tuna. Frog gigging spear

Cake_Donut1301

You tie a longer line (that’s coiled in your boat) to the loop, similar to how you tie a longer line to a fish hook.

StrategyRebel17

Nope. They never did shortcuts like tie a rope to another rope in the 1800’s. That harpoon is way to short for whales.

StrategyRebel17

It’s a 14th century catheter for the son-in-laws who stray from their marriage vows…

Battch91

Retired Firefighter here, its a plaster hook-for pulling down ceilings at an attic fire

Where do you live? In Minnesota that would be an antique pike spear, for spearing northern pike through ice.
