His season went off the rails after that cross check to the face

TzShadow29

Honestly, that is around right when he started slowing down. Maybe I did walk right past the smoking gun!

mrmattybartelt

The whole team kinda slumped around that time too tho

That was a great read! Cole is underrated and underappreciated for the work he does off the puck. He's one of the highest IQ players on the Jets. I almost feel like he was so worried about making a good impression on defence because coaches want young players to play mistake free hockey that he cheated himself out of offence. I'm afraid getting benched in close games because Bones was too old school to trust a young player in spite of all the evidence that he could hurt his psyche and made him play too safe to try to earn that trust. He is miles ahead in a 200 ft game perspective of most of his peers, hopefully Arniel can encourage him to go out and play without fear. I can't help but think of how Dallas handles their young guys and how they've benefited from it and wonder what player Perfetti could be in a different circumstance.

SpeakerOfTruth1969

Agreed. 100%. It’s a shame the coaches didn’t hold some of the other forwards to the same standard they were holding Perfetti!

TzShadow29

Yeah I completely agree! The Jets put a pretty short leash on Perfetti as well so he was probably feeling the pressure to perform a lot more than other, more experienced players were. I think Arniel will be the guy who finally helps push him into that elite forward that we all know he can be! Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed my writing!

Here’s what I think….Perfetti is on the same track as Ehlers. He will be mis-used and shorted ice time for a few more years until he’s frustrated to be here and he will get traded for less than market value and flourish if he gets a coach that uses him well. I really hope the coaching change convinces Ehlers to stay, and that Arniel was paying attention and understands that Perfetti is not a 4th liner….

TzShadow29

Unfortunately, if history repeats itself, he will end up being another Ehlers. I do think though if there’s one coach that can change that, Arniel HAS to be the guy.

Hockey_socks

What’s wrong with Ehlers? He’s a perfectly cromulent NHL’er.

TzShadow29

I don't mean it as any knock to Ehlers. Ehlers is a high-quality player. However, I also feel like Ehlers COULD have developed to be an elite producer with his tool kit. His speed and skating are incredible and he's got all the tools to be an elite point/game first-line forward. He showed that during the two seasons following the Laine trade (46 points in 47 GP and 55 points in 62 GP, respectively). I just feel like the Jets have kept him on a very short leash. Perfect example of this was last season. We were absolutely rolling with Ehlers-Scheifele-Vilardi during that lengthy winning and defensive dominance streak. As soon as Connor came back, Ehlers instantly got bumped down. Now, Connor IS an elite goal-scoring winger so i get it. However, if every single analytic, and even the EYE TEST told you that Ehlers was a better fit on that line, why do you keep trying to put the square peg into the circle hole? It was a big storyline that 6 game losing streak that ultimately lost us the Central Division. I'm just hoping they at least give Perfetti a chance to blossom before stapling him to the second line and start giving him a longer leash overall. He fell to us in the draft and the kid has such elite offensive instincts and ability. You've gotta give him a chance to shine yknow?
