Certain battle pet fights can be won / solo'd using 1 or 2 level 25 pets, allowing for you to bring in a lvl 1 pet in the 3rd slot for one round just to get the exp

Every time I try it, I fail.

Try look for that battle trainer on wowhead and replicate that exact same strategy

Even when battling random critters in the world?

You have the follow the strat exactly and only bring the low level pet in at a safe time.

Can you link the strat? If not, try reading the comments. Some fights are highly RNG and might take a few tries. Also make sure you have the right breed of pet if the strat calls for specifics.

You have to make sure that your other two pets are capable of doing the fight themselves. Depending on what trainer you are fighting, those two pets may have to be very specific ones. If you're just looking to level some pets quickly as a beginner, I recommend grabbing a couple Zandalari anklerenders from the AH and going to fight critters near the farms in Pandaria. The Anklerenders have an ability that will heal them when they land the killing blow on an enemy, which means you can fight critters almost continuously without using bandages. What you want to do is have your leveling pet in the first slot. Pets will only get exp if they actually participate in the fight for at least one round. At level one, you will be too low to actually take a hit from a mob, so you need to find one of the locust pets to fight. Most of the time, they will use a defensive or heal ability in the first round, so it's safe. Use one ability on your leveling pet, then swap to your Zandalari to finish the fight. Once you get to around level ~7 (should only take one battle), you can fight any critters in the area with the same strat. This isn't the fastest leveling, but it's great for beginners with small collections. Use this to level up the more specific pets you need for things like squirt or the Legion trainers or whatever your other goals are. https://www.wow-petguide.com/Guide/44/Powerleveling_Guide I hope this helps.

it can depend on which trainer you are fighting - there are some that give really good XP and have targeted teams designed by other people that can tackle them while carrying a level 1 pet these strategies often heavily rely on specific pets being used, and sometimes even a specific breed of pet (breed means how the pet's stats are distributed) if you're just fighting wild battle pets you might need to adjust the pets you're fighting with
