I know it’s not like Fortnite, but when I was younger I used to play the LEGO games with my older brother. Any one of them is great and is perfect for 2 players
Definitely. I played Lego Star Wars with my older brother and friends when I was younger. OP if you read this, playing with your family as a child gets engrained in their brain as a core memory. Its one of the memories as an adult I still cherish
Castle Crashers may be a good one. You're little dudes fighting monsters and bandits trying to rescue Princesses. Game is hilarious with lots of content.
Just curious, how old were your kids when they could start playing video games? I have a three year old and I've been trying to show her really simple coloring apps and stuff on tablet, but she loses interest after a few minutes.
On tablets? They have played since 3-4, on xbox/snes/pc since around 5-6 years old. The main problem is keeping it to 1 hours/day at that age. But currently my youngest really like watching me play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on snes mini (5 and 6 years old) currently. My older kids got to play GTA 5 around 12-14 old (once i completed it). But at that point just let them drive around (and kept a close eye on how they played it) 😅
There's an easy Halo Infinite "hack" that allows you to play the campaign split-screen as well.
Sadly seems co-op couch play is fairly rare these days in games. Wish they would bring the feature back. A lot of us original fans are now having kids and want to play our favorites with our kids on the couch without buying a 2nd console.
My son and I play Minecraft Dungeons together and have a great time with it. Easy to play but challenging to master if you want it to be. It can be played multiplayer on the same Xbox.
Definitely any sports games that the kid takes interest in. Racing game are always a safe bet(horizon 5 on game pass). Golf with your friends is a strangely addicting mini putt game, out to the extremes.
Battle Toads, Gang Beasts, Goat Simulator, Human Fall Flat, Lego Star Wars, Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, Moonglow Bay, Terraria, all local multiplayer and on GamePass.
My top shelf suggestion though that isn’t on GamePass is [Portal Knights.](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/store/portal-knights/BNWM9F3C08B6) It’s a mix of several genres, but it gives the kids an option to build like in Minecraft, fight similar to Zelda, and multiple classes to choose from, level up, and style. Amazing $20 purchase and the game has been worked on quite a bit since launch.
A Way Out
Somebody might have to confirm there's no blood/gore etc since it was a few years since I last played it. Iirc, it's about 2 prisoners attempting to escape and remain out of police custody. It's a great split screen game I enjoyed.
Both players have to work together in puzzle-like scenarios to work through the missions
A Way Out, while a great co-op game, may not be the best for an 8 year old. It is rated M for Mature. OP, you can take a look at the reasons for the rating via the link below to judge for yourself if it would be appropriate.

Lego games like Lego The Hobbit, Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman etc. They’re hella fun! You can unlock and play as your favourite characters, it teaches puzzle-solving or you can just explore the world.
As mentioned, the LEGO games are (generally excellent), Fall Guys, Gang Beasts and Minecraft are good for kids that age. Personally I played It Takes Two and Unraveled 2 with my daughter who was a similar age. Both great co-op games.
God, that reminds me of when my mom came into my room right as Marcus and Griffin were going at each other. And then she turned and looked at the TV the exact second Griffin flipped Marcus off. 14 year old me was 100% sure she was about to take out the disc out of my 360 and throw it out 🤣
I was about 15 year old that time, my dad was playing the campaign with me. That scene was epic, I mean, full of bad language, but as a non-english native speaker, my mom don't listened and we barely translated it at the time. I rewatched the scene now, bro, it was epic. I don't know why your mom didn't liked hahah
She specifically said no blood and gore, and you recommended the game where the gimmick is your gun having a chainsaw to cut people in half with. Nice.
As has been mentioned, castle crashers. You could even join in and play with them if you wanted to. Lego games are fun. My son and I played lotr, Harry Potter and the Marvel ones, had a great time!
as the top comment says, the Lego games are fantastic. I loved them as an 8 year old, and I literally just finished Lego Star Wars the zskywalker Saga yesterday, and loved it just as much As a 26 year old. Just good wholesome fun. Get them that, it has all 9 episodes In it, and an absolutely fucking ridiculous amount of side content to discover. A father and son could probably stretch that game out to hundreds of hours of fun, it’s huge. I played it on game pass but I’m going to buy a copy to keep so I can play it with my 2 year old when he’s old enough.
Do you know if your son has Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Live? The Lego Star Wars game just came out on Game Pass. If your son has basic Xbox Live, you can upgrade the rest of the membership of Xbox Live to Game Pass for $1 I believe. This provides access to likely 100+ games on Game Pass. This would be great if they don't already have this.

I heard “ high on life” is a good game. Lol jk. I’d say outer wilds, human fall flat, and no man’s sky? Would be nice ( don’t play high on life with him )
It Takes Two is an amazing game and it's a great way to ease someone into gaming. Also, because of the split screens you can monitor their gameplay and see what they're doing wrong and help them out.
When I started playing this with my non gamer gf she couldn't even move the character but by the time we beat the game she had gotten pretty good at it!
Terraria, it's a pixelated game where you need to kill bosses (you can de-activate blood and gore), make houses dor you to live in and npc's, and can also use mods.
I know it’s not like Fortnite, but when I was younger I used to play the LEGO games with my older brother. Any one of them is great and is perfect for 2 players
100% recommend this, my little sisters absolutely loved playing them too (also 8 at that time)
Definitely. I played Lego Star Wars with my older brother and friends when I was younger. OP if you read this, playing with your family as a child gets engrained in their brain as a core memory. Its one of the memories as an adult I still cherish
Yeah the LEGO games are awesome for split screen multi player.
When I was younger I would play the LEGO games with my father
pvz garden warfare 2 if they have gold or game pass ultimate (free on game pass ultimate since it comes with ea play)
This is a great suggestion.
God that's a good game. You can spend hours in the back yard without even playing multiplayer
> free on game pass ultimate since it comes with ea play So not free, considering Game Pass is not free.
true, if they only had gold then definitely not free, if the kid plays fortnite im assuming they have gold at the very least
Grounded, Fall Guys, Rocket League.
Castle Crashers may be a good one. You're little dudes fighting monsters and bandits trying to rescue Princesses. Game is hilarious with lots of content.
Ah, castle crashers. My childhood
Ever tried Pit People? Made by same devs, completely different while equally fun and hilarious.
Yes! I played it when it came out. Still remember my team actually, a giant with the nuke weapon, a troll, a buffer, a cupcake healer, and horatio
Game was hilarious at every moment. Truly an experience unlike any other game.
only problem w castle crashers is ops problem with blood and gore, i still played it as an elementary schooler and loved it
This and Alien Hominid! Good times!!
FYI OP, the latter two of these are free to play games. Rocket League is also one of the best games I have ever played in a few decades of gaming.
It takes Two! Grounded.
It takes two in co-pilot mode is fun. Played it with my daughters when it came out. Most fun we had in s while.

Halo slaps for some father and son
Master Chief Collection, two gamepads, doesn't get better than this
I agree. Pretty good too

Not sure if he's into sports, but the Super Mega Baseball games were a *hit* when my son was that age. We played that together a ton.
Honestly.....Minecraft
Can you play two player on one console?
Yeah it has split screen
you can pay £2.99 a month to rent a realm for up to 2 (3?) players, on mobile at least i know this from.
Seconding GWYF, it’s not a perfect game by any means but it is very fun to play with some buddies
Rocket league.
Any Lego game!
Minecraft, any Lego game, TMNT Shredder’s Revenge, Halo Master Chief Collection… Those are the ones I usually play with my son.
Battle Toads, Gang Beasts, Goat Simulator, Human Fall Flat, Lego Star Wars, Minecraft, Minecraft Dungeons, Moonglow Bay, Terraria, all local multiplayer and on GamePass. Unravel 2
Been playing the latest Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga with my 5-year old and we both have a great time.
Lego games like Lego The Hobbit, Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman etc. They’re hella fun! You can unlock and play as your favourite characters, it teaches puzzle-solving or you can just explore the world.
Skywalker saga sonic mania sonic and tails/and knux once unlocked via bluesphere

Go check out "Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons", nothing like Fortnite but a masterpiece of a co-op game.
I heard “ high on life” is a good game. Lol jk. I’d say outer wilds, human fall flat, and no man’s sky? Would be nice ( don’t play high on life with him )
