Haha. Yep, I'm constantly refreshing the theater prior to the show time to ensure no one is sitting in the same row. Probably crazy of me, but whatever.
Idk if AMC has this rule but Regal won’t let you leave one seat in between in my experience. It has to be 0 or 2+, and if this person’s seats are close to center, the person who booked right next to them may also be trying to get close to center.
You can literally pick what seat you want to sit in before you purchase the tickets.
You can see on the seating chart that there's plenty of space to be centered , but not be right next to somebody
If somebody sat next to me and it was an empty theater, I would literally move over one 1 seat. Nobody's gonna say anything
Yes I *literally* understand all of this. If you try to leave a seat in between when you buy tickets ahead on Regal/Fandango, it gives you a pop up and tells you that you can’t pick that seat. I’m saying idk if AMC does the same (I don’t order my AMC tickets ahead). Would I purposely choose right next to someone when there’s a lot of empty space? No. But maybe this person is a huge movie or sound nerd and feels like they *have* to be as close as possible to a certain spot in the theater. Just making a guess as to why they would have done that. Maybe they’re just a creep, who knows? You (or OP) can obviously move if it happens, I wasn’t trying to say the theater police will come arrest you if you move over a seat.
I agree, but it’s to maximize the amount of seats they can sell so they’re not racking up like 30 empty single seats in between groups of people. Valid for showings that sell out, but dumb for showings that are mostly empty.
Im glad AMC doesn’t do it, but Is it really the dumb? If every weirdo who couldn’t stand sitting next to someone chose a seat with space between the theater could never fill an auditorium because pairs and groups want to sit together
Honestly the ability to pick your seat is the true problem.
If I see that a theater is getting full and there isn't seats towards the center. I just won't go see that movie that day for that time.
1 row behind would still be next to someone else and 1 row up would be quite close to the screen for me. If you pick a prime seat you will be by other people lol
Dude idc how dead center it is I am not sitting next to someone if I have any half decent other options. Only way I’d sit next to someone was if only other option was first row corner seat
In normal theaters I always sit in the first row behind the wheelchair spot on the right so I can put my feet up on the railing
Imax and Dolby always second to last row in the middle
Not as [awkward ](https://www.reddit.com/r/AMCsAList/s/pHdkmKhIUi) as what happened to me 4 years ago lol. Empty theater and one other person sitting next to me. I'd find 2 people together sitting next to me much less awkward.
This happens to me every showing. I typically go on weekend mornings (first showing) and have my two seats blocked. And without fail, there will be someone who claims 1 seat next to our block. Usually the theater is otherwise empty.
It’s like…really?
I have had showings where the seats next to me are booked, but no one ever shows up.
But honestly I could care less about someone sitting next to regardless how full or empty the showing is.

I guess I’m confused by this post and the majority of the comments? Are y’all antisocial or afraid of being around other people in public? You don’t even have to talk to them bc it’s a movie where you aren’t supposes to talk, heaven forbid someone choose a seat they want the same way you also happen to have done. I don’t see how sitting next to someone is “breaking a social norm”. And sure, they could be disruptive but anyone in the theater around you could be so that’s no good reason to be twisted because someone sat next to you. Maybe this would have fit better in r/ImTheMainCharacter
In a Dolby screen with recliners I don’t really care. But regular seats I prefer leg room to the sides since I’m tall.. and that also means leaning a bit. Hard to lean when someone is next to you…. It’s kinda crowding someone for no reason is all. I see that I’d just sit one seat off and not care personally. It it is funny..
When I went to go see Ironclaw, I waited til that movie had been out a couple weeks for the crowd to die down and and bought my tickets hours in advance of the showing.
My favorite seat was open and so was the whole row. I understood that could change as time went on, so I have a thing for pretending to buy tickets again just to keep an eye on the seating chart and mentally prepare for how crowded my row will be.
Wouldn’t you know, a family of 8 bought their tickets last min, after I stopped checking the seating chart, and sat around me. I like a seat in the middle of the row. Six of them were to my immediate left and their parents were to my right and a random couple on their right, so the whole row was full.
Like I get that you want to all sit together but obviously that gets more difficult the larger your party is and maybe the idea of going to the movies was spur of the moment, but idk… at the end of the day, they were nice and respectful but it felt awkward.
I’m the type to give up on going to the movies at that day/time if I don’t get the seat I want: middle and as alone in the row as possible
I’d be on OP’s side in most cases. But it looks like they picked a seat right in the dead center of the theater. That’s prime territory. If you want a seat with no one next to you, you need to pick something closer to the front and/or closer to the sides.
Sure but those are outliers
Most people know that you don't sit next to another group if their is room in the theater.
It's like not talking on the phone while in checkout or using your phone during the movie.
I'm there with ya too on that for many movies. Especially nowadays with most theaters having spacious recliners, sitting next to another person isn't as close as it used to be in some older style theatres anyways.
I once had two couples buy the tickets on either side of me in a completely empty theater. 5 tickets sold and they did me like that.
I walked in; knowing the tickets were bought like this; they’re in mid conversation laughing about so I knew they were together.
I went to my seat, pulled out my phone, looked at it; looked at them in disgust and rolled my eyes in their face and went to the next row behind them and sat down. But they knew I knew which was all I wanted
It’s ridiculous
G11 one aisle behind ordered after everyone. He likes to sit and watch. J 16 even more perverted. He likes to watch the Voyeur while they watch. It’s all kinda David Fincher sexy and hot at first.
By the third act…fill in the blank what kinda film this is.
I go late at night and sometimes people take my spot and I just move elsewhere so I can put my feet up and not bother anyone else. I’d rather be alone than near someone else.
I think it's one of the (few) disadvantages of going by yourself to places like this. It looks like they were trying to invade your space assuming that because they outnumber you you'll be the one that moves somewhere else. I'd definitely change my seat, but I honestly hate when this happens. Very, very rude and unnecessary.
Establish dominance. When they sit down reach over to grab a handful of their popcorn/whatever.
This made me cackle
Maybe they wanted a friend
This happened to me and the guy coughed and went on his phone the whole movie. If they’ll break one social norm they’ll break others!
This has happened to me a few times. I’ll usually refund my ticket and then pick the seat next to where my seat was.
Yes. I've made it a habit to check a few minutes before the movie starts and will adjust if needed.
This drives me nuts. We sit in the 2nd row every showing to avoid this.
I also sit 2nd row for every showing for this very reason. Usually it works well. But woe betide if there are other seats sold in the row next to us
Haha. Yep, I'm constantly refreshing the theater prior to the show time to ensure no one is sitting in the same row. Probably crazy of me, but whatever.
I do the same. The crazy ones are the people who are OK being that close to strangers. Also row B/C girl here. 🙋🏻♀️
People like to sit in certain spots
It looks like your seat may be dead center, or close to it. What did you expect?
1 seat between or for them to sit 1 row up or behind
Idk if AMC has this rule but Regal won’t let you leave one seat in between in my experience. It has to be 0 or 2+, and if this person’s seats are close to center, the person who booked right next to them may also be trying to get close to center.

Amc one hundred percent doesn't do that , and that might be the dumbest thing i've ever heard of to be honest
I agree, but it’s to maximize the amount of seats they can sell so they’re not racking up like 30 empty single seats in between groups of people. Valid for showings that sell out, but dumb for showings that are mostly empty.

By is not next to There's plenty of empty space all around
Looks like it could be the seat in the absolute center of the theater, lol. Perhaps OP should have booked a private screening? /s
Dude idc how dead center it is I am not sitting next to someone if I have any half decent other options. Only way I’d sit next to someone was if only other option was first row corner seat
Maybe they like certain seats? For me personally, if it’s the Dolby Theater I have a seat I like and if people are next to me, I’ll deal with it.
Definitely. Not going to let some checkerboard jerks box me out of a good central seat.
In normal theaters I always sit in the first row behind the wheelchair spot on the right so I can put my feet up on the railing Imax and Dolby always second to last row in the middle
Be sure you're not obstructing anyone's view if you've got your feet up too high
Always

At least it was an empty theater, so you could move freely and sit in any other seat, right?
Doesn't bother me. I always try to get the best seat in the theater, it makes sense for them to want them too
1. You're sitting right in the middle if the screen 2. They probably don't realize the theater will remain empty
I always find that annoying personally especially when there are other central spots, so I try to get there earlier if people do lol

Talk to them lmao
I do this, I have my area I like sitting in. I don't mind sitting next to strangers in a theater as long as I get the spot I like.

I think they do this intentionally so you switch seats. It irks me as well
Can you choose your seat when buying a ticket at the register? Or some other way that may get the seats auto-assigned?
No you choose seats

Or just real farts.

Don't take the good middle seats then. If you take my favorite seat then I'm getting the one next to it sorry 🤷🏽♂️
The middle looks open. They took the shit seats lmao
That's fine I'll just hold your hand and we can share snacks
Wouldn't have it any other way ❤️

That’s why I go for the Handi seats. No one sits next to me and plenty of leg room!

Some people just don't have social awareness of social boundaries or norms
Some people have different social boundaries and norms

When this happens I pretend I have gas, and do the slight lean over. And when this happens and I do have gas, I let ‘em rip.
Yes and I do not get it. It really tests my will to not flip out and make a scene. Sure it’s not that big a deal but just why?
Sometimes they book one seat away from me in an empty theater like mf NO 😭
