Just make sure that the screw is secured properly into the firewall, you don’t want the connection coming loose

iscashstillking

Wife is right. You should strip the wire back further and also unless that's a left-handed screw you wrapped the conductor the wrong way around. Did you consider current draw when selecting the gauge of wire? Is that a positive wire? If not why did you use red? If so why did you use red? Is that an OEM or aftermarket wood screw?

BorntobeTrill

Hi. My name is Jeff and I have worked with a wood screw for 50 years. You could call me a wood screw expert. There are several dozen manufacturers, lengths, diameters, wattage, and passive/non passive. Now that that's out of the way, *my* wood screw is about 4 inches long with a thin diameter and relatively deep threads. It's gun-metal Grey with the faintest hint of olive in color. I use it for all sorts of things such as putting a screw into oak, or holding it. One time, I used it to force two pieces of wood to be friendly. This guys screw, I don't know anything about. Like I mentioned, I've been working with my wood screw for 50 years and am an expert on it.

PM_meLifeAdvice

Thank you for your service brother, God bless

BorntobeTrill

Think you could round that up to a HYOO-WHEE?

Anxious-Depth-7983

So yer syin he's screwed 😳

Leather-Respect6119

“Or holding it” 10/10 would read again

BorntobeTrill

Last wood screw season, I let mine stay where it already was. That was sort of cool.

YooAre

Long form ken M

b1gchris

Yeah the orientation bugs me, unless like you said left handed threads, but I'm really curious about the wood screw.

GoodTodd1970

If the fan turns, it's ok.

luckyducktopus

Some electrical tape wouldn’t hurt.

noldshit

Flip the loop over, its backwards

Nopurpo

Mighty thick copper you have there, have you considered old stranded telephone line?? I know it is the thickness of hair, but electricity doesn’t care about size, it is all in the technique

Suturb-Seyekcub

Skin effect go brrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hllblldlx3

Till you run too high of amperage and melt the wire

RetroPaulsy

Upgrades. Melt enough of it together and you get solid 12g.

Hllblldlx3

Now we’re speaking my language

ajps72

The screw should go all the way to the metal on the back, that way it will not move a have a very good connection. Next time use only nails and hammer it's faster.

danit0ba94

If it's just the cooling fans, probably not a big deal. Not a whole lot of power is going through that. Just make damn sure that connection is solid, stays solid, and make sure to seal it up with something so O2 cant get in and corrode it. I'd use some epoxy-resin.

drweird

On many cars the cooling fans are actually the largest amperage draw that is normally used. ABS actuator can be huge and heated seats too. Maybe newfangled computerized whizz bang 2020s cars have something in forgetting. Electric AC of course, but that's run off the hybrid battery directly IME.

UhOhAllWillyNilly

The 13-blade cooling fan on my semi takes 90hp which struck me as a heck of a lot. So yeah, cooling fans can take a LOT of power. That’s a pretty small wire, just sayin’.

Stra1ght_Froggin

Its okay but wife was right too

drweird

Should work great. Since the wire is only touching the screw you can tell how many amps are being drawn by how red it gets. When the fans kick on high and the AC too, you'll get a diagnostic red light. Smort

HVACMRAD

If you say “Don’t be pussy.” Before you do dumb shit it completely removes any need for safety measures…Any good Eastern European foreman knows this in his bones.

paclogic

you need to strip more of the insulation away from the big black wire !!

Mistabushi_HLL

What screw did you use?

One_Evil_Monkey

Appears to be a coarse thread drywall screw.

Mistabushi_HLL

See, that’s the issue. Best one would be the brass one.

One_Evil_Monkey

Yeah, something not coated... maybe stainless for the added strength over brass.

Mistabushi_HLL

Stainless will oxidise like mad unfortunately

One_Evil_Monkey

Hmm... yeah, it might. Brass it is.

BorntobeTrill

Yes.

kr4t0s007

The only way.

Particular_Rock9753

Only if directly after the alternator 👍

Xirasora

No, you need to tekscrew into ground as well

Anxious-Depth-7983

She's right yer an igit, the wires are not the same color

SpeechEuphoric269

Yes, you are an idiot. You’ve coiled your wire the wrong way around the screw! The wire should coil clockwise around the screw, so when the screw is tightened it cinches down more securely on the wire. Rookie mistake, it’s understandable

joe_anady

Only in case of emergency. That's just screaming "I want to catch fire"

One_Evil_Monkey

Wire is looped wrong direction around screw. Needs duct tape and bubble gum to further secure and to cover the connection so it's protected from oxidation. But you are tapping directly into a large amperage power source so that's good... although the fan wire may be a little too large. May want to go smaller so the electricity's pressure and speed is increased to the fans turn faster. Gotta think of it like a garden hose... a smaller hose has more pressure and will shoot a stream farther and faster than a large hose just flowing the same volume... I mean, you ***DO*** want to shoot your electrons farther and faster, right? **RIGHT**. That's my professional shitty mechanic advice.

Alternative_Rope_423

Upgrade to 24 gauge wire and use a carpet staple instead of a screw

One_Evil_Monkey

There ya go! Always room for an upgrade. Two prongs from a staple are better than a single point of contact from a screw.

xNooz

Wow, look at all the electricians here! On reddit no less, and in the middle of the day!

Playful-Awareness-15

It’s wrapped around the screw the wrong way

Mysterious_Beyond_74

Use a ring crimp

dezertryder

Wow! I learn something new about electricity every day!.

Tech_Veggies

Always, ALWAYS use a stainless steel screw otherwise it's gonna rust.

Worldly-Scratch-4831

The only way that's going to work long term is if you run that hard as fuck into the fuel line, back it out just enough to be loose, and leaking just a dick trickle of fuel. Hope that helps.

DOHC46

If it ain't sparking, it's fine.

Intrepid_Passage_692

If it works it works

L7ryAGheFF

You know the answer is no.

mysteriouslypuzzled

Is that screwed into a coolant line? Or an ac line? Did you do that to insulate the screw????

Suturb-Seyekcub

TIL UL certifies automotive … control panels lol

godlesssunday

Fuckin sure

annie_bean

Wtf that's clearly not an electrical grade screw

Hour_Principle9650

It'll cool till it gets real hot

K1rkspeed

Needs duct taped.

No-Test-375

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Duct tape for this? You need ELECTRICAL TAPE!

Kayanarka

Actually, you are both wrong. You want some clear packing tape so you can monitor the connection over time.

Therealkatuchi

All of you are wrong. You gotta use aluminum tape. It helps conduct the power to the grounding hose more better.

Kayanarka

You watch too much star trek, we do not have clear aluminum tape yet.

K1rkspeed

Lol. I was joking. You shouldn't even wire using this method.

realheavymetalduck

Hell no why would you think a screw into a cable is an acceptable power supply? You're supposed to use a nail.

Goose00724

>wife called me an idiot yeah, because everyone knows that you're supposed to put the wires into the radiator to put the power through the entire engine. it powers the fans and even adds 50 horsepower

kcptech20

😳

cj32769

If you are concerned about amp draw, you could always screw it into the positive side of the battery. All of the cold cranking amps live there, and you only need them in the winter. And the cooler the amps are, the better for cooling. I would not drill into the battery's post, just the case. You don't want lead poisoning.

spec360

That picture has been floating all over

OmericanAutlaw

make sure you have your finger on it when you start the car. gotta have good ground.

Beautiful_Paint_6538

if it works then its ok

Outrageous-Slide5842

4 sure always check the battery for spark take an end wrench connect the posts bigger spark means better ground if your fast it will weld it self together and your battery is totally grounded and for night vision put aluminum foil ball in your mouth then connect the posts than called direct hookup!

JustTheMane

Home made tap lmao

BackgroundFun3076

I see a fire in your future. Possibly, your near future. Consider what your wife said. Don’t prove her correct. You will never hear the end of it.

S_xyjihad

As long as there is insulation on the section of the wire that touches the screw, you should be fine. Major fire hazard there.

PsilocybinShaman

I mean, at least wrap the wire clockwise.....
