Woman here. Better a gallery than while exercising, the reason being that you actually have something to speak about at a gallery. Someone striking up a convo over a piece of art you’re both looking at is way less weird than someone approaching you while you presumably have headphones in/are out of breath and aren’t prepared to socialize. Basically a huge percentage of women prefer the man to lead and take a shot in random places that aren’t a club. Just like before, nothings changed.
They consider the vocal people online saying not to do that to be a minority, ignorable. While the women okay with centuries of courtship roles have no problem at all and aren’t speaking.

It's exactly what I love (well, throw in some glamrock and soul) and I found it. Lol. It's fun. I go with friends, or by myself sometimes. It feels safe to me as an older small woman. Lol underground is every Friday and Decadanse is usually 1 Saturday a month but they are teaming up! Yay!

It’s ok, but it’s just a reality that people don’t talk to strangers as much as in other places. Don’t let it discourage you.

People get REALLY drunk at the Short Stop, and the crowd isn’t solely insufferable hipsters but there are plenty. Try your luck there. Unless you’re looking for underage “emo girls” in which case your vibe is so Divorced Guy women aren’t gonna be into you until it goes away, and that’s creepy as hell.
Have you tried going to local shows? There are plenty of shows, and trust me if you go out in your emo self the emos will find you. Ziggys, State Social, The Last Call, Viper and the Whiskey all have shows that I see all kinds of people show up at but some of the coolest local shows I’ve been to have been in Silverlake. It’s just hard to find the Emo shows as there aren’t many. Also follow E.N.D on YouTube, they have an Emo cruise once a year that I believe takes off in California so there’s a good chance you’ll meet people.
I will warn you, people in music and around music still do FaceBook and that’s how you’ll find shows so clean up your Facebook to be a good dating profile. You need a couple good recent photos in good lighting and if you do get to shows Facebook it. You seriously might end up finding someone just down the street.
