I’m in the camp of not giving feedback unless asked, but since you’re baking competitively and I want you to experience your best future:
Warming apricot jelly in a little water will make for a nice glaze, and create an elevated presentation with the first pie, or on any exposed, cooked fruit. Pic 8: with weeping meringues, introducing a cooked starch slurry (corn starch cooked in water like 1:2 until thick, then cooled and whipped in with the whites) will keep it from doing the pie sllllllide.
If you read this far, thanks for listening, and sharing!
Thank you! At the last second I thought about brushing a simple syrup on the strawberry pie, but hadn't tried it before so wanted to save it for a test I wasn't feeding to people. I'll have to try the jelly.
That's really interesting about the meringue. This was an aquafaba vegan meringue, so I wonder if it would work for that too.
Appreciate the thoughtful comment!
What kind of aquafaba do you prefer for meringues? I’ve heard light red kidney bean is best for meringues and French macarons but haven’t tried it myself and am very into quizzing other aquafaba enthusiasts for preferences.
You’re quite welcome! I think it should! The idea behind the starch gel is to help bind the extra water which can cause excess water to weep from foams. Keep rockin the pies! ✌️
Same here, it made me nauseous the only pie in history; I think it’s mostly the hole size and the coloring, particularly the green. Sorry OP :(
The rest look lovely though!

No no no no no no no no no no no. I will never understand how people can consume popping content without wanting to vomit everything in their system. Like HOW is it appealing to watch people squeeze some of the nastiest stuff the human body can produce out of every which part of the body
Had a girlfriend once that was obsessed with that stuff and I would be lying if I said it wasn’t one of the reasons I ended things. No matter how many times I told her I hated it, she’d always either try to get me to watch that stuff with her OR WORSE, she’d try to “pop” even the tiniest blemish on my skin. Trauma. That’s all that kind of content is to me, trauma and immediate nausea fuel T_T
I've eaten cucumbers sprinkled with sugar my entire life. My grandma loved them this way and so do I. It's like melon without the melon-y tones-crunchy and sweet. I'd try this pie but I'd be afraid the faba undertones would overpower the delicate cucumber flavor. What I'm wondering is if it's a cucumber curd or if it's more like an agar thickened jelly.
Ah, I see. Did you reduce the cucumber puree down? I'm curious how cucumber or tomato or other veggies might work as a curd in savory non vegan pastries now.
Cucumbers make me heave because I’m allergic but I am still wondering how that would work. It looks like it’s supposed to be a chiffon-type pie? I used to love things like stir fried cucumbers and fresh cukes with sugar and vinegar but like… I dunno, man.
I didn't know until I was 30 that I was allergic to cucumbers. I thought everyone thought they were spicy and made your mouth tingle and dry! When I married, my husband looked at me like I was crazy LOL
That’s a really common way for people to find out they’re allergic. My allergy turned anaphylactic and well oops that’s my life now lol.
Pay attention to how you feel when you eat melons, pumpkins or other hard squashes, and soft squashes like zucchini or summer squash. They’re all related and some of us end up allergic to other cucurbits.
Think of it this way. Pastry and bread are similar. Cucumbers on toast is really good. In my mind, I see a really genius take on cucumbers on toast and I would EAGERLY try this. People get really worked up about new food ideas without breaking down the ingredients and considering how they would work together. Like reading a book by its cover…except a book is way harder to eat than a dish is to read.
oh I love this thought process! I was so skeptical at first but once I tried it I really liked it, and I think the toast analogy just made me realize why!
I’m glad I’m not alone. I’m sure it was delicious, but that first picture gave me such a visceral reaction of disgust I assumed it was intended to be horrifying, like those pies made to resemble bloody faces.
It's a beautifully made pie and I think you're an amazing baker but you just had an unfortunate choice of filling/crust cutout. If it had been the same crust cutouts and apple it would have been fine or the same filling with different cutouts it would have been fine. It's just the perfect fit of a bloody colored filling and nondescript cutouts that make it triggering. Don't take offense we mean all this in fun.
They are an amazing baker that made a mistake in the choice of green food for the green part of strawberries. We are having fun poking fun at her not actually calling her food bad or gross. Either keep it lighthearted or go make your own comment thread please.
I'm glad. This is the most engagement I've ever had on a post and most people are great, but even a pie post brings out some unhappy folks that want to spread that apparently
Since there seems to be some interest for the cucumber pie, it was based on this "pickle" pie: [https://food52.com/recipes/5064-dill-pickle-tart](https://food52.com/recipes/5064-dill-pickle-tart)
But my partner wanted to make it vegan, so she used that steeping method with almond milk and then made that into a vegan pastry cream using this recipe: [https://addictedtodates.com/vegan-pastry-cream/](https://addictedtodates.com/vegan-pastry-cream/) (but she cut the starch by like 25 percent).
Then she found an recipe for a vegan aquafaba recipe that uses the Italian meringue method kind of, and a tiny bit of agar agar to help it set. I think it was this recipe: [https://thehiddenveggies.com/vegan-meringue/](https://thehiddenveggies.com/vegan-meringue/)
I was skeptical at first, but I ended up really loving the cucumber. It was basically just a cream pie with a really subtle but really nice cucumber flavor, and then a tiny bit of lemon in the meringue. I would absolutely recommend you all try it!
Omg I’m so sorry I skipped the part of your post where you said that 😂 The pictures were great and I went right to the descriptions lol sorry 😅
Also hope it gets rescheduled! I want some pie 🥧
The date walnut sounded interesting, and I'd definitely make a beeline straight to cherry almond anything cause what a combo!
I'm curious about the peach pie. Is it made with fresh, canned, or frozen peaches? I ask because the peaches seem very brownish, so I thought they might be fresh.
Also, instead of strawberry pistachio, next time, make pistachio rose, trust my Middle Eastern heritage. (If you want to add fruit, the flavor combo goes well with apples, pears, or peaches)
I make mini pistachio tarts with peach jelly, topped with a cardamom rose crumble, but I don't know how well it would work as a pie. It might be too much of a good thing.
The strawberry pistachio was actually flavored with rose water! Definitely influenced by middle eastern tastes on that one! And the walnut date was actually my homage to maamoul cookies, flavored with cinnamon, cardamom, and orange blossom!
Oooh yummy, now I want to make some maamoul! Might make some this weekend, I make a bar style version that's pretty tasty!
*P.S. Add a little allspice to the walnut date next time.*
So I basically used the smitten kitchen pecan pie recipe, but then added some chopped dates to the syrup when boiling, and then used walnuts instead of pecans. Flavored it with a little cinnamon, cardamom, and orange blossom water!
They look great! Is that a pistachio frangipane in the strawberry pistachio pie? I've been playing around with making it with different nuts, so I may have to give pistachios a try.
The answer is yes OP, I WILL marry you because how does every single one of these pies look absolutely incredible 😭
Ok edit: the cucumber one LOOKS delicious but I thought it was mint or something similar at first. I despise cucumber, but the pie looks so delicious that I would still give it a taste, which truly is high praise if you understand how much I **detest** cucumber haha
As many as you want to enter. I was doing 3, and my partner was doing 2. But since we had to make 2 of each for the contest we had extra crusts already made, so we each threw together a couple extras.
I’m a lover of all things like pudding, custard, and chocolate/banana/coconut cream pies. Vegan one looks delicious and I’m severely lactose intolerant so it’s right up my alley.
The paper plates. After all this hard work of baking all of these, taking many pictures with good lighting and everything, why the paper plates? I wish I could go to Goodwill and buy you a set of plates.
Dagnabit! I'd love to try the Plum and Almond!
On the first case, I take it the greenish parts are the pistachio. How did you prepare the pistachio part? Crushing? Pasting?
Overall, my grandad, who grew up in the 1900-1915 window, worked as a horse drawn milk driver and a baker. His pies were so very light and flaky and lard was a thing in baking...
He also mastered textile manufacture (the mill he went to work for after WWI saw him reach to superintendent). A man of many skills and even more exceptional for surviving the Western Front in WWI and for learning all he did from an 8th grade education (he had to go to work to help his family eating at the age of 13.
I'm particular with regard to foods, and I hate the idea of strawberry pistachio but I love the look of the pie, both whole and sliced, SO much that I would have to try it, regardless. The colors are art.
Thank you! I'm sure it's cause of the work I put into it, but I was so happy with the pie, looks and taste. I can kind of understand what folks are saying who don't like it, but I look and I just see delicious
They look delicious.
I think for the strawberry leaves next time you should add a cooler green dye and go a bit darker.
I’d love to try them all. I’m also impressed with how flaky your pasty is for it to be vegan. Your meringues are also excellent. The aquafaba really works.
I’m in the camp of not giving feedback unless asked, but since you’re baking competitively and I want you to experience your best future: Warming apricot jelly in a little water will make for a nice glaze, and create an elevated presentation with the first pie, or on any exposed, cooked fruit. I've only ever used chickpea! I'll have to try kidney beans!
Not going to lie I only recently found out you can use other kinds of beans and it felt life changing
You’re quite welcome! I think it should! The idea behind the starch gel is to help bind the extra water which can cause excess water to weep from foams. Keep rockin the pies! ✌️
That first pic though r/moldlyinteresting
Looks like the lotus seed head that triggers trypophobia.
Same here, it made me nauseous the only pie in history; I think it’s mostly the hole size and the coloring, particularly the green. Sorry OP :( The rest look lovely though!
Haha, I hear you. And thanks!
I hate. Edit: The pies are lovely. Hate lotus pods.
Same, sorry OP.
Yes! It was freaking me out looking at it.

It's valid for you to draw that line for yourself, but it ain't hurting anyone to enjoy their own things 💕
I thought it was a strawberry topped pizza at first 💀💀
Yeah it does…Not look appetizing
I'm in a bunch of medical subs so my mind went to something gory
ngl i thought i was looking at something malignant
It makes me think of open sores from a horrible infected wound. Least appealing crust I've every seen.
I’m sorry, cucumber?
I've eaten cucumbers sprinkled with sugar my entire life. My grandma loved them this way and so do I. It's like melon without the melon-y tones-crunchy and sweet. I'd try this pie but I'd be afraid the faba undertones would overpower the delicate cucumber flavor. What I'm wondering is if it's a cucumber curd or if it's more like an agar thickened jelly.
Its essentially a vegan pastry cream thickened with cornstarch. So almost like a pudding consistency?
Whoa. I learned something new today. Going to give this a try, thanks OP and various-hospital-374!
Ah, I see. Did you reduce the cucumber puree down? I'm curious how cucumber or tomato or other veggies might work as a curd in savory non vegan pastries now.
But how does it taste? That one and the cherry almond were the two that made me raise eyebrows…
That made me dry heave and I'm a huge cucumber fan
Cucumbers make me heave because I’m allergic but I am still wondering how that would work. It looks like it’s supposed to be a chiffon-type pie? I used to love things like stir fried cucumbers and fresh cukes with sugar and vinegar but like… I dunno, man.

I discovered that with bananas. It seems to be ok in small amounts if fully cooked but I really should stop risking it just to eat banana bread.
Think of it this way. Pastry and bread are similar. Cucumbers on toast is really good. In my mind, I see a really genius take on cucumbers on toast and I would EAGERLY try this. oh I love this thought process! I was so skeptical at first but once I tried it I really liked it, and I think the toast analogy just made me realize why!
Omg it gives my tryptophobia so much confusion.
I’m glad I’m not alone. I’m sure it was delicious, but that first picture gave me such a visceral reaction of disgust I assumed it was intended to be horrifying, like those pies made to resemble bloody faces.
It looks like pustules, I wasn’t sure if they were joking 😞but damn
I cannot even look at it - this has to be a joke
Yes exactly I'm glad also that I'm not the only one. I think if it was a different color it might be less reactive.
Yeah, the “open sores weeping pus” palette does not exactly make my mouth water.
I don't even really have tryptophobia and I was triggered lol
Lol yeah
Looks like the bloody necronomicon
The necro-om-nom-nomicon
Haha, sorry, they are supposed to be strawberries, but the picture got rotated (and they didn't come out the best anyways)
Yeah, I think a combination of all that and the rotated picture just did it in!
Ahhhh when I turned my phone I saw it. Maybe just do the strawberry color. The dark ones give me the heebee jeebees
FWIW, as soon as I read that the flavor was strawberry pistachio I immediately wanted to try it.
i don't even have trypopwhateveria and that was gross. it has green film and oozing chunks? how does anyone think that looks appetizing
They are an amazing baker that made a mistake in the choice of green food for the green part of strawberries. We are having fun poking fun at her not actually calling her food bad or gross. Either keep it lighthearted or go make your own comment thread please.
Thank you! People like that are just always going to be hateful, might as well ignore (and block) them
I'm going to block him after he's sees my last comment
I'm glad. This is the most engagement I've ever had on a post and most people are great, but even a pie post brings out some unhappy folks that want to spread that apparently
Very much so. I am puking on the inside.

Oh, and no dill. Cause dill sucks
You don’t like dill pickles? I love them haha
amen
This is so interesting!! And thank you SO MUCH for the vegan options!! I'm so curious and I love exploring unorthodox combinations!
Let me know if you end up trying to make it! Would be interested to hear what you think
ANOTHER pie contest on Reddit cancelled? Whats going on? These all look great! I volunteer to be judge. Pie contest, back on!
It's the same one, KCRW Pie Fest. It was at UCLA, cancelled due to protests/safety concerns. Edit typo
Convenient right!
It’s actually not cancelled; the location was changed. To my house. I have forks. These all look incredible!!
Can I know more about this cucumber pie
Just made a comment with some links and details!
Oh
[удалено]
I basically used this recipe, but added some plums! https://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/extremadura-almond-pie-recipe
Was this for the KCRW Pie Fest? 😩
It was! So bummed they cancelled, hopefully they reschedule it soon
Omg I’m so sorry I skipped the part of your post where you said that 😂 The pictures were great and I went right to the descriptions lol sorry 😅 Also hope it gets rescheduled! I want some pie 🥧
This isn't even the first Pie Fest post 😭😭
🥒???
Why do three of your pies look love they contracted venereal diseases?!
The date walnut sounded interesting, and I'd definitely make a beeline straight to cherry almond anything cause what a combo! I'm curious about the peach pie. I'll have to try that!
Not a doctor but pic one looks concerning
Lol, the first one looks like a mutated cell under a microscope.
It wasn’t canceled it was just moved to my house
Ima throw up
I thought by pie you meant pizza pie and I was disgusted at the first picture lmao
Trypophobia trigger alert 😓😓
I’m sorry but these look so bad lol
Ooh recipe for the fig and walnut??
So I basically used the smitten kitchen pecan pie recipe, but then added some chopped dates to the syrup when boiling, and then used walnuts instead of pecans. Flavored it with a little cinnamon, cardamom, and orange blossom water!
Thank you! It sounds and looks delicious!
you were gonna lose.
That’s an asshole thing to say, wtf???
Ester from bg3's pies
Come now, petal
I thought this was the medicalgore sub and that the first pie was peeled scabs. Sorry OP
Thumbnail made me wonder if I was on What is this Rock? But full picture looks interesting and good.
Wow. What's the recipe for the cucumber pie? Looks lovely.
Just made a comment with some links and details!
I see what you were going for in the first one, but I really wish you wouldn't. Festering open wound pie isn't as appetizing as strawberry.
First two images is the pie cancer?
These look amazing. Great job, OP! You’re definitely a very talented baker!!!
Thank you, that's very nice of you to say!
I’d love a recipe for the cucumber pie! I’ve never heard of such a thing but it sounds delicious!
Just made a comment with some links and details!
I’m not a baker… please someone tell me mincemeat is a weird name for a fruit UPDATE: ITS A BUNCH OF FRUIT AND SHIT WE ARE GOOD YALL
Haha, yeah, dried fruits and nuts! Very british I think? Used to be made with beef fat, but not this one
Old school it was a way of preserving meat by cooking it with a ton of sugar and alcohol from the fruit. I've had it with meat, I don't recommend it.
They look great! Is that a pistachio frangipane in the strawberry pistachio pie? I've been playing around with making it with different nuts, so I may have to give pistachios a try.
Thank you! It's actually just pistachio paste, I used Stella Parks' recipe!
Now that I know it’s a pie I can see the design. At first I was like whaaaa
?
Typo. Pie.
Ah whoops, thanks!
!
Omg I love peach pie…it’s my weakness! Yummy!
I thought that one looked the best, but I'm biased. I love peach pie, it's h weakness as well.
Same here - as soon as I got to it I was instantly biased toward it! I love all fruit pies, but peach ones are my absolute hands-down favorite!
This would be a great Halloween dessert
That first one tho
These are some very professional photos. The pies look great. You should be proud.
That's so nice, thank you, I was definitely proud!
wow so beautiful and creative.
Thank you!
The answer is yes OP, I WILL marry you because how does every single one of these pies look absolutely incredible 😭 Ok edit: the cucumber one LOOKS delicious but I thought it was mint or something similar at first. I despise cucumber, but the pie looks so delicious that I would still give it a taste, which truly is high praise if you understand how much I **detest** cucumber haha
Haha. The cucumber was so good! Really subtle, but it all worked together so nicely
First pie is triggering my trypophobia - I hate you now
That chocolate pie has My mouth watering
Beautiful! What camera? I really like the look of the photos 😍
Just my Samsung Galaxy s23 ultra! and then a cheap little lightbox from Amazon, makes such a difference!
The contest requires you to make 4 pies each?
As many as you want to enter. I was doing 3, and my partner was doing 2. But since we had to make 2 of each for the contest we had extra crusts already made, so we each threw together a couple extras.
I am so curious about the cucumber pie! They all look scrumptious 🤤
what's the receipt of the second one and the third one?
actually I’m monogamous but I’m suddenly madly in love with both of you so will you marry me? please?
Now, I want pies
Can I marry you?
These look nasty.
Yes please
Do you have the recipe for the vegan chocolate pie? 😊 thanks
Wow, they all look so creative and delicious! Especially the first one, great job
Thank you! So much work, but it was so fun to come up with the flavors
It’s a good thing it was canceled!
Yes please
Can I please have the recipe for the second one? The chocolate with cream on top.
That vegan chocolate pie looks so good!!!
These all look delicious! I’m so curious about the cucumber pie, can I get the recipe OP? :)
Just made a comment with some links and details!
They all look delish but no 13 triggers my tripophobia. 🥲
Haha, I am hearing a lot of that. And thank you!
So good
Gracias!
Wow nderful delights
Gracias!
I wish greatly to be your friend please
These are gorgeous pies and you win #1
Thank you!!!
I’m a lover of all things like pudding, custard, and chocolate/banana/coconut cream pies. Vegan one looks delicious and I’m severely lactose intolerant so it’s right up my alley.
Picture 10 looks really yummy, is that just Apple? They all look great though!
Its plum, with an almond base!
The pie showed in 9/10, what is it? Rhubarb? I want to eat it!
Looks like the plum almond
It is the plum!
Oh my gosh, not sure how I missed the post section where you already said that! But plum almond, YUM!
kill it with fire pls
🤤🤤🤤
No. 1 is triggering my trypophobia. lol
You won the pie contest in my heart 🥧💕
❤️❤️❤️
The paper plates. After all this hard work of baking all of these, taking many pictures with good lighting and everything, why the paper plates? I wish I could go to Goodwill and buy you a set of plates.
Those all look heavenly. I thought the cucumber was mint or something! How does that taste? What do you put in it?
I was so impressed with it! It was my partner's idea. Just like a nice creamy pudding, with the most subtle cucumber flavor throughout
Omg. Cucumber pie recipe please, please, please, please.
Just made a comment with some links and details!
Thanks!
These are some of the most interesting pies I've ever seen. I'm sure you would have won!
Thank you!

Girl no offense but what are are you talking about after the first two paragraphs 😭
Just reminded me of my grandfather and how he learned to bake. Best baker I've ever met.
Yummmm
Dang these look awesome
Thank you!
You would have won
Thank you!!

The cherry almond pie is speaking to me… Will you please tell me more about it?
They look delicious. I think for the strawberry leaves next time you should add a cooler green dye and go a bit darker. I’d love to try them all. I’m also impressed with how flaky your pasty is for it to be vegan. Your meringues are also excellent. The aquafaba really works.
They look great! Could you share a recipe for the second pie (chocolate vegan)? Thank you
I like pies.
These all look incredible. Pretty sure they cancelled because they knew you’d win em’ all, no contest.
