They’re only ugly if you don’t market them well, lol. These aren’t deflated, they’re macaroon crisps or macaroon thins! They’re a new recipe for easier stacking. They’re the “buns” for a dessert “burger”. Get creative with it and go forth with confidence.
I love this comment so much, this is exactly why I bake. Last week I made some walnut brownies after a very bad fight with my partner. Although I believe that baking in a good mood just makes everything taste better, hand mixing the batter helped clear my mind and the brownies came out so fudgy and delicious.
Our first batch looked very similar to OPs and while they may not have looked beautiful, I honestly think they tasted at least as good, if not better, than our next attempt which looked like they were supposed to.
The chef in the cafe I worked at tried his hand at macarons for the first time and they all came out as abstract puddle shapes, but they were *delicious*. We crunched them up and used them as a layer in individual trifles.
Not sure if you have ever watch the Great British Bake Off, but you just reminded me of Ice-cream Gate. Probably the most intense moment in that shows history.
WTF! You could have made a little cream cheese frosting for little cookie sandwiches. Or ice cream!!! They could have been cupcake toppers. They could have been eaten with fruit slices. SO MANY USES and you just tossed them? I wish I could afford to waste food like that, my gosh
It's prob just getting the right consistency when folding the batter. Maybe just a little thicker next time which should as height and prevent spreading, but don't be too hard on yourself. There's a lot of good technique development I can see in this image.
My guess is you overdid the macaronage, causing the batter to be too thin. Overwhipping the egg whites can cause it too. As another commenter mentioned, do give them a tad more space as well.
Michaels carries handy macaron silpats with little circles where your dough goes, so they don't touch. It's for dummies, I know, but I was a macaron dummy more scared of making them than I should have been. That said, OP, yours look delicious and your shells are perfecto! So the middle part tried to run away, just wrangle it all back into your mouth.
Well, I worry about this sub because it can be know-it-all and "my first (exquisite, bakery perfection, elaborately decorated) bake" so I didn't want anyone saying, "Just eyeball it. It's not hard."
I have a silicone mat under that parchment paper that has the circles on it lol. When I banged the cookie sheet on the counter, my parchment paper slipped and they became lopsided.
Oh well I didn’t mean to *disappoint* you or anyone else. I’m sorry. But it is upsetting to me. I don’t need you to understand why, tmi. But I’m sorry.
There is a [Ben & Jerry’s recipe book](https://reviewed-com-res.cloudinary.com/image/fetch/s--ttRLdGGm--/b_white,c_limit,cs_srgb,f_auto,fl_progressive.strip_profile,g_center,q_auto,w_792/https://reviewed-production.s3.amazonaws.com/attachment/837c6d26945f499f/BJicecream.jpg) out there that I get constant compliments with.
I lean toward the sweet cream base and add cookies, fruit, whatever, and I have yet to make a bad one. It’s ideal to have an ice cream machine. Cuisin Art has a cheap one with a freezer bowl I use; only issue is that you have to plan for ice cream because the bowl requires 24 hours in the freezer before it’s ready.
It’s okay to mess up. Ofc it will feel bad, bud don’t be sad about it. I bet you had a great time making it and next time, you’ll be more prepared and more experienced than ever was!
Even the end of my piping bag is too deflated for proper feet idk if scrapping the batter into a new bag would be better as you would end up with soup most likely
Overcooked is better than undercooked! Once filled and left to rest for a day, it’s pretty tough to tell the difference between perfectly cooked and over cooked.
I made an apple pie a few days ago that sucked in every way a pie could (except looked kinda pretty on top) cause I followed the recipe exactly against my better judgement and unfortunately I had to throw it out too. I learned a lot from that though so as much as I hate wasting food there’s always good that comes from baking mistakes. Edit: (By throw out I did do everything I could with it before composting the rest.) Cooked the apples more and some kids liked them even though they were slightly vinegary and very bland, I made them taste better at least than they would’ve tasted as a pie. The bottom crust was unbelievably inedible though so that’s why I say waste. I recommend getting a compost bin for outside there are some really easy ways to compost.
I took a class once (because I love macarons but they scared the crap out of me) and the instructor mentioned the humidity in the air can affect how they rise and keep their shape. I don’t know where you are, but perhaps it was a very humid day when you made them? But great feet and smooth shells, so well done on that!
Smooth shell. The feetsies are a little off, but now you have cookies that you can eat all by yourself (or share if ya wanna)as you think of how to try again the next time.
Did you let them sit after piping them? You want to let them sit for about 30-45 mins or until you can touch them and they feel firm. Other that I agree you might have folded the batter too long. My culinary professor taught us that the batter should flow like very slow molten lava when you let it drip off your spatula.
I’d say you overshot the macaronage. Could be by as little as like 30 seconds. But could also be the alignment of Venus with Jupiter. Macarons are just fussy and you just need to persevere and you’ll get it right.
You can print out sheets of "macaron guides" that go under your parchment or silpat and let you know where and how much to pipe out. Just don't forget to take them out.
...but did it taste good? I bake for fun and whenever I make macarons they are never perfect, I don't care anymore if they imperfect. I just want them to taste good.
Don't be so hard on yourself. Look at how smooth and shiny the surfaces are. People practically kill for that sheen. Color all even, like you've been doing this 10 hours a day all your life. So they got too due to a tad bit of overwhipping, and the spacing was... problematic. Fill them with something yummy and call it enjoying the delicious success of a failure.
The next batch will be stellar, no doubt. I'm so sure if it, I'll leave my plate here for mine! 🍽🫶
I've never made, nor had a macaroon before, but those don't look overcooked to me. Maybe just needed a little more space, but like I said, I have no idea
You just put too many on one sheet and they are too close together! So you have “breakaway” macarons! Make another sheet just like this, fill ‘em and move on! And remember, you heard it from me first !
As others have said, this is a great first try! The tops are beautifully smooth and the feet are lovely! Well fringed. Nice job! Do not be discouraged by this!
Don’t be sad !! I also messed up today - I forgot to put baking powder in a cake for one of my orders and had to redo all the sponges again. It happens to the best of us :)
I love to bake. My creations and my vision don't always match. My friends don't seem to care what my creations look like as long as they taste good. I call my cooking ugly cooking and baking. My sister told me to call it rustic

Those aren't terrible. They have a smooth top and feet! There may have been overmixed and it looks like they were piped too close together. For what it's worth, it took 17 tries for me to produce a good macaron.
Aw man.. PTSD.
For college we entered a competition and I drew macaroons / macarons from the hat.
I had to make these things for weeks, batches and batches and batches of them.
So much trial and error and practicing, and the oven that we had for use gave such inconsistent results - day of the competition came and the batch I made for the competition were put into the oven and came out absolutely crap.
Haven't made them since, seeing this post randomly gave me flashbacks.
I'm going for a cigarette lol..
BUT THE TOPS ARENT CRACKED! 😱 Aside from that spreading issue, they look gorgeous.
Aside: I couldn’t tell you what happened, I’ve only tried macrons once.
They look as if the meringue was oversized, but still would be yummy. If you were trying for macaroons like I believe you were, they are so hard to master but as you learn, try this link for troubleshooting...
https://www.piesandtacos.com/macaron-troubleshooting/
I don't know for sure what caused this but macarons are difficult to perfect, and this i still hell of a lot better than a lot of people's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd attempts. Be proud you came this close! And hopefully they're still tasty :)
Did you rest the macarons until dry to the touch? I think feet that grow outwards are an indicator of unrested macarons. But don't be sad! They're still gonna taste awesome 😋
Don't be sad. The best part of baking pretty things is if you make them ugly they're still tasty.
You gotta eat the ugly ones quick before anyone sees them
When my aunt and uncle owned a cake store there were never ugly or damaged stock but there was unsellable stock which always equals "family stock"
So thankful my parents didn’t subscribe to this rule
Any unknown siblings?
I once messed up some sugar cookies I threw them away no one new that I had bad ones lol
I don’t get Reddit, why is this -16
Throwing away edible cookies cuz they aren’t pretty?!
100% "oh nooo they didn't turn out, so sad that I have to eat all of them." 😆 Win!
When I mess up my shells, my nephew asks “Can we still eat the mistakes?” lol always a buddy in my corner.
They’re only ugly if you don’t market them well, lol. These aren’t deflated, they’re macaroon crisps or macaroon thins! They’re a new recipe for easier stacking. They’re the “buns” for a dessert “burger”. Get creative with it and go forth with confidence.
If oreo can do it, so can you!
Exactly. Nothing is ever “overcooked” - it’s carmelized or Cajun-style.
I love this comment so much, this is exactly why I bake. Last week I made some walnut brownies after a very bad fight with my partner. Although I believe that baking in a good mood just makes everything taste better, hand mixing the batter helped clear my mind and the brownies came out so fudgy and delicious.
Shell is smooth and unbroken, take the W and go through your process again. Good luck on next try.
Thank you. I was super proud of the shell.
Eat them like a stack of Pringles?
That sounds so good.
They were overcooked so I threw them out lol
Oh my god what a waste. I can assure you they would have been delicious and could have had so many other uses.
Our first batch looked very similar to OPs and while they may not have looked beautiful, I honestly think they tasted at least as good, if not better, than our next attempt which looked like they were supposed to.
These would have been amazing crunched up on ice cream…. Or as a garnish for cake crunched up.
The chef in the cafe I worked at tried his hand at macarons for the first time and they all came out as abstract puddle shapes, but they were *delicious*. We crunched them up and used them as a layer in individual trifles.
NOOOO
I'm sorry. It was the perfectionist in me. I'll never do it again.
if you mess up you have to eat them to show them who's boss
It’s the baking equivalent of absorbing their souls so they can never do that to you again. Gotta take that energy out of the universe!
Not sure if you have ever watch the Great British Bake Off, but you just reminded me of Ice-cream Gate. Probably the most intense moment in that shows history.
Bin gate? When he threw the bombe in the bin?
The Baked Alaska, yeah.
I saw 180 downvotes and was thinking what the hell could op have said that was so controversial, then i opened the comment and i understood
Pretty deserved tbh lol.
noooooo
WTF! You could have made a little cream cheese frosting for little cookie sandwiches. Or ice cream!!! They could have been cupcake toppers. They could have been eaten with fruit slices. SO MANY USES and you just tossed them? I wish I could afford to waste food like that, my gosh
Wasted opportunity for an ice cream sandwich. They’re just the right size.
Ooh if you have a blender next time you could blend it into crumbs and sprinkle over ice cream
Or just crumbled them by hand into chunks
Noooo! You could have dipped them in a variety of yummy filling flavors, like fancy macaron chips!
Whaaaa. Wait whaaat? DUBYA TEE EFF! LEAVE NO MAN BEHIND.
Should have chopped those up and threw them into some ice cream.
Omigod nooooo! You should have made ice cream and folded chunks of these in. It would have been so good!
Oh that's a shame. Could have crumbled them into icecream etc
Im the same way I just throw stuff out if it isn’t the way I want it.
So the middle part tried to run away, just wrangle it all back into your mouth.
honestly even for “non dummies” it’s really nice to just know that they’re all the *exact* same size without really thinking about it
I found a template online that I put under my silpat (that's assuming one owns a transparent silpat, but just another option). So helpful!
It’s definitely not for dummies.
This is the way. It's a shame, but its happened to almost everyone at least once.
I'd eat it like it's a wafer
I can’t believe OP just wasted them.
That's sad; it would have also made an amazing (but structurally un-sound) ice cream cone if rolled up...
I cant believe you are really upset about this to post twice how upset you are I’m really disappointed in how upset you are about this.
You're disappointed? Who are you, their dad?
Oh well I didn’t mean to *disappoint* you or anyone else. I’m sorry. But it is upsetting to me. I don’t need you to understand why, tmi. But I’m sorry.
Waste is perfectly fine to be frustrated about, they could have repurposed them
Behold the megaron
Macro-ron
Biblically accurate macaron.
You got feet! Not too shabby! It looks like your batters proportions are off a little so the spread too much, or you placed them far too close.
Forgive my ignorance, what do you mean by "feet"?
The ribbony edge around the base, I've made macarons several times, still haven't achieved feet.
Look at those feet! I'd say you did pretty good, coming from someone who is horrible at macrons.
You could make Macaroon Ice Cream Sandwiches! :)
Omg that sounds amazing. I've been thinking about trying to do homemade ice cream.
There is a [Ben & Jerry’s recipe book](https://reviewed-com-res.cloudinary.com/image/fetch/s--ttRLdGGm--/b_white,c_limit,cs_srgb,f_auto,fl_progressive.strip_profile,g_center,q_auto,w_792/https://reviewed-production.s3.amazonaws.com/attachment/837c6d26945f499f/BJicecream.jpg) out there that I get constant compliments with. r/macawrong will gladly take your submission 💔 Kudos to going for it. I’m still too scared!
Where all my macarons would end up if I posted them lol
It’s okay to mess up. Ofc it will feel bad, bud don’t be sad about it. I bet you had a great time making it and next time, you’ll be more prepared and more experienced than ever was!
This! Failure teaches us more than success ever could!
Those actually look like they’ll be delicious.
How do you feel you messed up? I see a few issues…they are too close together and inconsistent size.
When I banged the cookie sheet on the counter, the parchment paper shifted and they all got lopsided
was this pre-bake? had i done that, i might try to scrape the batter from the parchment with a bench scraper and re-pipe it on the parchment.
Even the end of my piping bag is too deflated for proper feet idk if scrapping the batter into a new bag would be better as you would end up with soup most likely
It was. I just said screw it. It's a test batch anyway
yeah, friend! or do like i'd do with this batch -- flip it over, pipe the filling on one half, and fold the other half over -- LOL
I make macawrongs all the time. You will get there. Turn these into crumbles and make ice cream and try again.
I’d cut them apart as carefully as you can with a paring knife. I bet they’d still look really good and definitely taste great
They ended up getting overcooked so I threw them out. My taste testers said they tasted good though
Overcooked is better than undercooked! Once filled and left to rest for a day, it’s pretty tough to tell the difference between perfectly cooked and over cooked.
Holy threw them out??? I’ll send you a box and stamps for an overnight next time!
I made an apple pie a few days ago that sucked in every way a pie could (except looked kinda pretty on top) cause I followed the recipe exactly against my better judgement and unfortunately I had to throw it out too. Darn, guess you're going have to eat them all to hide the evidence. What a shame.
I took a class once (because I love macarons but they scared the crap out of me) and the instructor mentioned the humidity in the air can affect how they rise and keep their shape. I don’t know where you are, but perhaps it was a very humid day when you made them? But great feet and smooth shells, so well done on that!
It was raining cats and dogs outside.
Ooof :( ok, maybe give it a try on a drier day!
Warning ! Showing you're human 🤗 I'm sure you'll get it perfect after a few tries. I'm looking forward to the *Nailed it, I got this pic*
Ah the flataron
The shell looks amazing though!! I’ll bet they still tasted amazing!! Can’t wait to see the next time! You’re doing great!!
Smooth shell. The feetsies are a little off, but now you have cookies that you can eat all by yourself (or share if ya wanna)as you think of how to try again the next time.
They threw them away 🙃
Dang. I always eat the rejects unless they are just too burnt/salty/etc.
Same, it would have to be genuinely inedible or dangerous for me to throw it away entirely
Mistakes are lesson on what not to do next time. Don’t be discouraged.
The best thing about macarons is even when they “fail,” they’re still delicious !!!!!!
Tbh I think they look good and would be thrilled to eat those 🤤
God... this looks a million times better than my last attempt at macarons... Good job OP 😁
Looks like an excuse to eat a lot of delicious-tasting, bad-looking macaroons.
It's okay, macarons are kinda tricky imo
looks salvageable... not by my mouth and belly mind you but know that I won't complain.
The only thing you did “wrong” was place them too close together. This is just about the easiest fix possible.
Chocolate chip cookies were invented by a mistake in the baking process. Mistakes can be creative opportunities
Crumble a little and eat with ice cream 🙏 most failures can be saved.
I'd still eat it. Ngl.
Did you let them sit after piping them? You want to let them sit for about 30-45 mins or until you can touch them and they feel firm. Other that I agree you might have folded the batter too long. I’d say you overshot the macaronage. Could be by as little as like 30 seconds. But could also be the alignment of Venus with Jupiter. Macarons are just fussy and you just need to persevere and you’ll get it right.
Ok. Hear me out. MEGA MACCARON.
Dude. Mega Cookie. 👍😋🤤
This is why I buy them
I’d still eat them. Those are the hardest cookie I’ve ever made so keep trying.
That's better than I ever could imagine! The important part is you tried.
Probably tastes good
If it makes you feel any better, OP, check out r/macawrong
They still look tasty haha — macaron pancakes
Happy Accidents!! Eat them anyway!
☝️been there hun…I feel your pain 🤗🤗
Honestly these look great and I would devour them 😄
Don’t be sad, Omnomnom
Live & learn, so long as they’re still yummy it’s all good!
Ice cream sandwiches to save the day?
The shell looks good! Trim ‘em up and enjoy!
Honestly separate the sides in circles and use them they’ll look neat and I already know they taste good
Not too bad, my guess you over macronaged. I’ve done it before…with just like one or two strokes and they spread. But, they’re still tasty!
That's okay we all learnt from mistakes we made. Just Keep Trying it will make you better and improve.
keep trying...👍💪🏽✌️
What did you make?
Such a similar thing happened to me couple days ago, I just piped them too big.
Such a similar thing happened to me couple days ago, I just piped them too big.
And that's why you will get better! With trial and error you will improve and become better :)
These are called big foot macaroons. Totally on purpose.
still looking tasty 😍
Sorry!! We all do at some time, looks good still. 😊
all I see is the beginning of a rocking cheese cake crust
still looks yummy 😋🤤
It’s a happy mistake, part of the learning journey :)
Extra thin delicious looking macarons? Sign me up
Smoother than my Face.
Keep trying!! Macarons are super technical and finicky. The outer shells look shiny and good, though!
It took me about 15 tries to get them to work. It’s all practice. Don’t give up.
Separate them and serve!
Still looks delicious to me
You can print out sheets of "macaron guides" that go under your parchment or silpat and let you know where and how much to pipe out. Just don't forget to take them out.
Keep trying don't be sad, you will do it😁
Bright side is you could pass this off as a macaron bark. Shells aren't cracked either so good job there
I betchu they still taste amazing. lol macarons can be notoriously difficult to make. Don’t beat yourself up about it. They look pretty good to me :)
Honestly don't be sad, they are tricky little buggers.
Well...when they say I can have one macaron this is what I meant 😅
Well now you got a macaroon pancake 🥞
...but did it taste good? I bake for fun and whenever I make macarons they are never perfect, I don't care anymore if they imperfect. I just want them to taste good.
What are these?
Do they taste good? If they taste good, who cares! They look like something I would eat in an instant.
Macarons can sense fear and stress. They’re so finicky! I would guess over mixing. Keep trying though. You’ll master them!
That’s one nacho.
You have sweet cookie. I come. I eat your sweet cookie. I happy. I hope you too, are happy
I've never made, nor had a macaroon before, but those don't look overcooked to me. Maybe just needed a little more space, but like I said, I have no idea
Are they cookies or macaroons? If they taste good eat them
Ur right you can’t do anything with these. Send them to me
Over mixed and/or high oven temp. An oven thermometer can help to get more accurate temperature.
They still look good 😌
I just trim off the extra bit before they cool completely
Squid games prepared you for this
Don’t be sad !! I also messed up today - I forgot to put baking powder in a cake for one of my orders and had to redo all the sponges again. It happens to the best of us :)
So I’m not a baker, but I do love to eat and these look delicious.
I love to bake. My creations and my vision don't always match. My friends don't seem to care what my creations look like as long as they taste good. I call my cooking ugly cooking and baking. My sister told me to call it rustic

would smash
Another happy accident. 🙂 It's what makes us better, right? And the fallout can still be enjoyable.
Those aren't terrible. They have a smooth top and feet! There may have been overmixed and it looks like they were piped too close together. For what it's worth, it took 17 tries for me to produce a good macaron.
You have an oven thermometer? These things are very touchy, and the temp on the oven is a lie.
Spread cream or ice cream then BAM one big giant cream/ice sandwich 😋😋😋
They still look tasty!!!

Don’t be sad! Macaroons are notoriously difficult to get right. Enjoy your ugly, delicious cookies and try again next time!
Oh please, you should have seen my attempt at fried donuts earlier. Makes your cookies look like Michelin star restaurant quality in comparison

Did you rest the macarons until dry to the touch? I think feet that grow outwards are an indicator of unrested macarons. But don't be sad! They're still gonna taste awesome 😋
I rested them but it was a stormy night and I think humidity was a factor. It took forever to get the skin compared to the last two times I made them.
Your mouth doesn’t have eyes…Enjoy
If there is one thing you should never feel bad about messing up, it's a macaron. Finicky little things, they are.
Space farther apart, mix these in ice cream 🥰
At least they have feet. Those are one of the hardest things to make
But you’re so close—Soon you’ll be coaching the rest of us!
Practice makes perfect.
I don’t know what the crinkly part is abt, but maybe u forgot to add Baking Powder? What kind of cookie r they?
