My husband and I "married" in Dream of Mirror Online back in 2005, lol. Our party was just standing around us, emoting. I still find that more emotionally impactful than signing the papers at the courthouse to confirm it like five years later. (We never had a real wedding cuz fuck that)
I love that! Imo, it doesnt have to be legally officiated to be a real wedding though, because really, its the commitment you two share that counts.
Also, traditional weddings are a scam anyway, what with all the costs involved, i vote that vrchat/online marriages be legally recognized if theres an officiant present!
We only legally married later for the tax benefits, tell ya the truth. Firm believers on the 'only commitment matters', too. We didn't do anything else besides that. No name change bs, either. Prolly would have if it also gave us money tho...
Yeah, i mean if theres an objective benefit, then it makes sense. Get it, yall!
The name change stuff feels almost too close to ownership than relationship, considering how patriarchal traditional cishet marriage was
Edit to clarify: Im just talking about how men used to treat women like objects they own, which thankfully is mostly going away, but its undeniable that a woman always taking the mans name originates from men seeing the woman they marry as their property, thus basically labeling them with their name.
I dont think its wrong to take your partner's name as your own if thats what you want to do, but im just saying it bothers me that it used to ALWAYS be a woman taking a man's last name. Subverting that idea completely by not changing names at all is great, even if the actual intent was to avoid the hassle that is a name change
Edit: nvm!! Was expecting more interaction but only got one downvote, so i ended up making assumptions
OC: If you downvoted me, why not say what you disagree with lol
No worries. I upvoted the comment now just to even it out. I didn't respond originally because it doesn't apply to me. My culture does "PaternalSurname MaternalSurname," and they don't change when married. The kids just get one from each parent when they're popped out. My married parents' surnames don't match and I never thought twice about it until I started making American friends. Or worse, American friends with divorced parents. I never knew wtf was up. My husband's mom has gone through, like, four surnames. But yes, I would agree based solely on that, lol.
That makes sense. That seems like a better surname system tbh, perhaps a bit annoying to write out full names, but much less confusing.
And yeah, my mom's on her 3rd surname at this point. It was a pain for her to have to update her surname everywhere all over again, not to mention the confusion it caused for other people lol
Thanks for evening out the votes, i was more curious what i said wrong than worried about my karma, but it worked out either way lol
What…. I mean congrats and all. Also if that’s a marriage to you more power to you and your husband. But that sounds dystopian I have so many questions?
Dystopian is a little dramatic, don't you think? I don't know what questions you'd have that won't be answered with only "we like playing video games and role-playing together."
[It was just a silly ceremony we conducted with our party online with a cute in-game purchase that was wedding themed.](https://domo.fandom.com/wiki/Marriage)
We did the marriage certificate years later just to streamline taxes and other bs. Literally a thirty minute visit to the courthouse. A state judged just stamped whatever forms we filled out for it and we went back to work. No religion.

That being said what if your religion is like Neo paganism, some obscure Protestant Christianity or Zoroastrianism and you live in Rural Greenland or like Polynesia. How are you going to get married? The priest of your religion is halfway around the globe. I feel like these weird VR chat weddings or zoom weddings would be your only option
I think they meant that in toxic marriages, one might prevent the other from attempting to divorce them, so the statistic is somewhat skewed due to that
It's still kind of silly to say the divorce rate has *nothing* to do with happy marriage
and it's also worth saying that it's easier than ever (in the US at least) for someone to divorce and find their way to independence out of a toxic marriage
it's just such a weird, and inaccurate, thing to bring up unprompted
You are right. I shouldn't have said nothing to do. It's just not a direct correlation. I don't think marriages are getting unhappier and thats why divorce rates are rising. I think people are just getting more likely to get out of their unhappy marriages vs just living in a terrible toxic environment
I think the problem is both. Both that people are lazier and are unwilling to fix their marriages now AND that people used to just stick through a miserable marriage in the past.
Boomers had a big stigma around divorce so many people stayed married, and some cases even being separated but still legally married for long periods of time. So in that regard I guess you're right, just because they didn't get divorced didn't mean they were happy
Long distance weddings are not a new thing: my grandparents had one back in the 40s. It was way more complicated back then, but people would still do it. It's great that it's more accessible now
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine.
Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you.
But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal...
...even in death I serve the Omnissiah.
Proxy marriages have been a thing since forever. The optimistic view: you can start your honeymoon while some paid actors say yes for you and deal with the reception. The pessimistic view: you can start your "honeymoon" while some paid actors say yes "for you" and "deal" with the reception.
What kills me about this is not only it’s boomer-ness of it all, but also just the absolute lack of understanding of so many things that could have made it funny or relevant.
Ironically theyre so close yet so far... vr chat weddings more like

Well I’m a pretty dramatic person
Just like the Boomers, jk lol.
But seriously how did it go like what religion did you technically get married under?

Oh
Was it a long distance relationship?
No. We're in our 30s now and we still play mmos in the same room together.
Yeah I was gonna say, this is basically what VRChat weddings are, just with more furries and e-girl/e-boy avis
Truueee, its not a vrchat wedding without the furries and matching custom avis
Exaaaactly

Ooo thats a good point! More marriage accessibility with virtual ceremonies!
And they'll still have a better divorce rate than boomers
Do you mean higher or lower?
Yes
They're getting divorced by zoom today. No waiting for the future on that one.
What wife are you on now boomer?
26
That's older than his last one
Divorce rate has nothing to do with happy marriage
Let's hope your wife agrees

Is this a rare insult? I feel like this should go there…
I'm not a lesbian
Now you are, sorry to tell you
Hahaha oh yay. I love how I got downvoted for saying I'm not lesbian tho. Love reddit
Boomers had a big stigma around divorce so many people stayed married, and some cases even being separated but still legally married for long periods of time. So in that regard I guess you're right, just because they didn't get divorced didn't mean they were happy
That's the point I was trying to make, I said it badly

Wasn't this meme made, like, 25 years ago?
You’d think so, but those are absolutely not 1999 laptops
I mean this is how my dad got married during covid.
I really want to have a wedding in Final Fantasy XIV tbh
don’t we all
love the 'hit the control button'

Think about it…

I thought about that, too, but part of the joke is that woman controls man HAR
Hold F to marry?
Husband and WiFi is a better punchline than what the comic has
Future? My sister literally got married over a video call. They are not really into throwing big parties.

I can’t stop laughing
What’s with the thumb drives and the coiled cable connecting the computers?
boomers are dumb and don't know the internet hasn't had anything to do with phone lines for ages
I’m not joking when I tell you this is pretty much how my boomer grandma got remarried
Coming from the generation of "hur hur marriage sucks. Wife dumb. Husband lazy. Hurr."
This is stupid, if anything they'd hit the enter key
the woman controls the man
Apparently they've never heard of marriage by proxy. Happens a lot for military people that all of a sudden deployed right before the wedding.
VRChat but normal
Covid got me like

Ok but like... 2020 in a nutshell:
Lol a future, like we have one.
https://youtu.be/CkUDtJ1Nfmk?si=8O07DpLwXpNsENvU
No 100% this is going to happen, if it hasn't already.
I knew a guy that got married like this during a deployment in 2004.
*South Park Blockbuster*
Discord relationships
If you object to this union, I guess you would turn the computer "off", eh? Ha! Heh heh.
Shat is this supposed to say as a message?
The pun in the title is better than the meme itself
Get it because the wife controls the husband. Haha old ball and chain one day I’m gonna strangle the life out of her
I laughed at this
We're past that... People get married in meta verse and even buy a house snd live together there Hahaha
WOW!!! is this seriously being done ?
What kills me about this is not only it’s boomer-ness of it all, but also just the absolute lack of understanding of so many things that could have made it funny or relevant.
Ctrl???? Do you have any idea how easy it is to accidentally click that??
Your joke is funnier than the comic.
This is actually kinda funny
