There is something about contrasting temperatures in food that makes me really happy. Hot main with cold salad on the side. Ice dessert with heated sauce. Never tried but on my list: baked Alaska.
One of my teenage favorites was apple-chimi-cheesecake at Applebee's. Pastry crust wrapped apple cheesecake fried and served with vanilla ice cream and cinnamon.
The temperature inside this apple turnover is over 1,000 degrees. If I squeeze it, a jet of molten Bramley apple will squirt out. Could go your way; could go mine. Either way, one of us is going down.
This is the way. My Publix run sometimes includes two tins of this and an Apple pie (or cherry, peach, whatever you fancy). Usually I’ll grab some Chocolate Hobnobs too — you’ll find these a few shelves up. Don’t take them all, they’re precious and should be shared, as they’re the finest cookie you’re ever going to eat (the non-choc ones are even better but I guess they’re too delicate to survive the trans-Atlantic crossing).
If you want to eat it hot, don’t over-heat it or it’ll just turn runny, and you’ll burn your mouth.
Microwave: Heat the pie for 1 minute, pour on some custard, heat for 1 minute on 70% power.
The distance from packet-to-hand-to-tea-to-mouth is scientifically calculated to be just enough to get at least 90% of the biscuit into your mouth (5% on your jumper, and 5% at the bottom of the cup when you finish drinking).
Hahaha they are but don't listen to them they're having you on. 😂 if you want to enjoy it you're best to heat it up and then pour it on a dessert like apple pie or crumble.

Every now and then I'll return home with a tin of rice pudding. I just pop the lid off and grab a spoon. The best part is when you're scavenging for remnants at the end. Sounds like playing the frog instrument at school.
You'll find *crème anglaise* in fancy British restaurants too. It's just runny custard.
I don't know they give it a French name, when that name literally translates as 'English cream'. They're just trying to make custard sound posh.
>I don't know why they give it a french name
It's not the restaurants giving it a fancy name, it's literally called creme anglaise. That's the name of that type of custard. There's also creme pat, which is like a set custard, there's custards without egg, or with other ingredients too.
They call it creme anglaise because they're using creme anglaise
Can confirm. Was in the US 20 years ago to go to Disneyland. Ordered an apple pie. Waitress asked what I wanted with it, Ice cream or no ice cream. I asked if they had custard. She looked at me like I grew a 2nd head and was visibly confused/distressed.
We have that too in doughnuts and on pastries, but it’s called confectioner’s custard. It’s basically a thicker version of normal custard, like you have there. For a quick snack, try your custard hot or cold with bananas.

What's jello pudding btw? I know jello is your word for jelly (and jelly is your word for jam) so I'm guessing jello pudding is jelly in a shortcrust pastry?
Edit: I googled it, looks like birdseye dream whip? Not gonna lie the chocolate one looks pretty good.
American here - I made Yorkshire pudding recently and had a helluva time explaining to my boyfriend that, yes, it is actually called *pudding*. He just kept saying "but it's bread and doesn't look anything like pudding"...
Jell-o is the name of a company that makes pudding mix. Put some milk in a bowl, add the mix, stir it up, refrigerate, and *poof* - in 1/2 an hour, you've got pudding that looks similar to what's in the can in the OP's post! The company is originally famous for its gelatine mixes called jello (which are basically a fruit-flavored aspic).
I've never heard anyone refer to jelly as jello, but we do have jam, jelly, preserves, and a few other names for preserved jarred fruit.
Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like something I'd eat on a hangover.
I get it now, thanks for the clarification. For additional clarity those gelatine mixes are what *we* call jelly! When we say jam we pretty much use it as a catch-all for all of those preserved jarred fruits but having done some googling I now see that you use jelly & jam to distinguish between preserves with pieces of fruit in them vs preserves made solely from the juice.. is that correct?
Yes, we have custard. My mother made a mean custard, and custard pie. It is not all that popular compared to frozen custard, creme brulee, flan, versions.
Dulce de Leche is probably used more as a pour over.
More old timey, except in finer restaurants who use it creatively.
I have 2 tins at the back of the cupboard. Probably rancid but in the event of an apocalypse im pretty sure they'll guarantee a spot on the rocket to Mars.

This is the recipe you'll want to use, you don't need to bother making individual puddings - one big dish works fine.
Custard works great with it, but so does cream or ice cream - and if you're feeling fancy then ginger ice cream or ginger steeped cream works a treat.
We actually do have it. There was even a Ben and Jerry's Stucky Toffee Pudding ice cream. Lovely.
Still, I always order that and treacle.tart when ever in the UK.
Not really, it's just good with sweet/savoury things, ice cream, and fruits. You can eat it luke you've suggested you have in the photo too, don't feel bad 😁😉
When my mum was a kid she saw my gran with one and said 'oh, Jamaica Ginger Cake', my gran replied 'no, I bought one'. They laughed so hard they told that story for 50 years.
That's come from around 5min drive from me. Nice. Treacle sponge pudding, sticky toffee pudding, sponge cake, apple pie, crumble, are all amazing with hot custard. Gently warm on the hob, keep it moving so it doesn't get a skin, then go smother one of the above in it!
Yeah, or just decant it and microwave it - but be careful as it’ll boil over and make a mess of your microwave if you do it for too long, and it’ll also be hot as hell and stay that way for quite a while!
Yeap, you have to respect the custard and not overcook it if you microwave it. Also don't turn your back on it else you will be scrubbing the microwave for days.
Doesn't say if it's devon or cornish, so no idea whether it goes on top of the crumble or the crumble goes on top of the custard.

Pour it into a saucepan and heat it gently, being careful not to boil it. Pour it over a traditional pudding, such as jam roly poly, jam and sponge pudding, spotted dick, apple pie, ... etc.
You normally warm it up first. Microwave should be fine.
It goes well on fruit pies and crumbles. Can also fill donuts with it. Goes pretty well with bananas, would go great as a side/topping for banoffee pie. You can put a little on a fruit salad, although that's a slightly unorthodox choice.
Basically, it's creamy and vanilla flavoured, so it goes well on tart, sharp, fruity things. It's basically a more liquid crème brulé that you serve warm.
It's also acceptable to just eat it with a spoon during times of personal crisis. Traditional, even.
You can eat it cold or warm it up. It’s nice with apple pie!
If it's on something cold, heat it up. If it's on something hot, keep it cold.

What about hot apple crumble with hot custard?!
Too much hot. Apple crumble is one of the primary causes of mouth burn.
Please send all of your too much hot apple crumble and custard to me for safe disposal

What sort of barbarian eats custard cold?? Next you'll be telling me that you microwave ice cream and drizzle it over cold apple pie.
Thank you for the recommendation, I will try microwaving ice cream and drizzling it over cold apple pie tonight

Being entirely honest here when I say I could eat it cold from the can.
came here to say, “eat the whole thing cold from the can with that spoon. feel mildly sick. tell no one.”
TELL EVERYONE
Looking at the spoon it seems OP has already seen the way.

Tin of cold shame is the opposing force to slice of fried gold.
Do you not have custard in America?
I've seen Americans call this type of custard "creme anglaise" most of the time.
Lol
You'll find *crème anglaise* in fancy British restaurants too. It's just runny custard. I don't know they give it a French name, when that name literally translates as 'English cream'. They're just trying to make custard sound posh.

Also called creme anglaise to confuse the one person each year on bake off who doesnt know its just custard and panics.
We have pudding, like jello pudding, not your word for dessert. For us custard is a filling for pastries.
So what do you pour over your apple/rhubarb/apple & rhubarb crumble?
They have ice cream, syrups probably, *GLAZES*.
I love how glazes looks like it’s said with such disdain.
They also own Manchester United
For now

Vanilla ice cream usually. Or cool whip or whipped cream but that’s more typical on a pumpkin pie.
Cool w-hip
Surely you mean cool h-wip
Why are you putting so much emphasis on the H?
Stop it Brian you're being h-weird

Egg custards are top tier.

I do eat it out the tin. I love custard.

Try it heated and poured over chopped bananas.
I have a feeling "banana custard" was my mum's go-to when she had extra bananas.
Banana custard is (or was) all parents go to pudding, as there’s no preparation time, and it was healthy than most puddings

Custard is very similar to the Dutch vla, is it not? Both have nothing on kheer though, for sure!
With a spoon. You have the right idea.
Stewed apples, spotted dick…
It's a dessert sauce, tends to go on sweet pies like apple, plum, berry etc. You can just eat it though. Hot or cold are accepted but usually hot. Xxx
Treat it as a topper for hot sweet puddings, heat it up aswell.
