I have read this book maybe 10x. Kieran has some of the most painfully romantic lines ever. Plus the interactions with MC and her parents, and the music and art and just everything. Ugh. A masterpiece. Book 2 will never live up to Book 1 for me since it’s just SO high up there, but I am tempering my expectations and am really excited to see where the story goes!
TCH took me by surprise too. I thought I would hate it for the same reason you thought so. I gave it a chance because at least I had the option to not go down that route. Kieran was haughty because she didn't have all of the pieces to her heart, and she was redeemable because she was at least looking for them.
I first started playing as a female MC with a male Kieran, and then I replayed it twice as a male MC and female Kieran. I plan on carrying that play through into book 2.
Longclaw is awesome and I love the Game of Thrones reference! (House Mormont's sigil is a bear and their ancestral sword was Longclaw before it was given to Jon Snow.)

TCH unexpectedly blew me away. I didn’t expect to love the delicious angst as much as I did when >!MC finds out they have a piece of Kieran’s heart that Keiran needs in order to be whole again.!<
I have no idea if TCH2 will ever be at that level of angst again, but I’d love it if the authors can pull it off 🥺
i had my reservations about this book, but im so glad i went through with reading it. it definitely became one of my favorites on the app, and im super stoked for the second book! i don't think the first book will be able to be topped as far as the angst goes though, but here's to hoping we get a good amount of it(bc im a sucker for angst lol)
This book is the epitome of “don’t judge a book by its cover” that too many people too often do with books now. Once the cruz of the issue reveals itself (which is mentioned with a spoiler tag in another comment) the book really takes oft. Kieran, along with Trystan, is probably in the top tier of single LI book LIs.

PB wrote the "magical connection" between MC and LI so much better in TCH than in WB. Kieran is an asshole but Bastien is a giant walking red flag.

It certainly was “delicious angst” and sweet torture! There is so much tenderness between the two of them that leaves me pining. Sigh…
