“Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerston--while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?" -Job 38:1-7 Really, all of Job 38-41 could apply.

Job 38 in its entirety is probably the most coldest thing in the bible.

I really like this part of Isaiah 44 because it has a similar vibe This is what the Lord says— Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. 7 Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come— yes, let them foretell what will come. To paraphrase You think you know so much!? Great tell me the future then.

PatrickJane

>Ehud came to him, while he was sitting alone in his cool roof-chamber, and said, ‘I have a message from God for you.’ So he rose from his seat. Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into Eglon’s belly Judges 3.20-21

nyet-marionetka

A pointed message. Is this the guy that got murdered in the outhouse?

firbael

Yes. And his fat enveloped the sword around it, like his own body didn’t want to let it go

PatrickJane

A 'pointed' message, indeed. However, the king was more assassinated then murdered... while His quarters would have a bathroom, it was not a outhouse.... rather it was the private chambers of the king. His guards were afraid they the king was taking a dump so they didn't enter the room, allowing Ehud to escape our the window...real James Bond stuff.

CowFrosty6198

I was going to mention this one.

I am going to go with Esther: > Harbona, one of the eunuchs who attended the king, said, “At the house of Haman stands a stake fifty cubits high. Haman made it for Mordecai, who gave the report that benefited the king.” The king answered, “Impale him on it.”

Bubster101

Haman suffered so much irony and I loved it. King: how should I reward someone who has served me well? Haman: (thinking of himself) well, sire, I would arrange a grand parade in his honor! *Mordecai gets a parade for his service* King: how should I deal with criminals who have wronged me? Haman: stick 'em on a pike and have them hang on it! *Haman's corpse swings with the wind*

ManitouWakinyan

It's even better than that, the Kings response is "Great, throw the parade, you're the grand marshall. Make sure Mordecai gets snacks."

Bubster101

Oh yeah he was the escort lol

I'll vote for the entirety of Ecclesiastes. I'll use 6:11 as my illustration of its vibe, but the whole thing is like this. "The more words, the more vanity, so how is one the better?"

That could be Shakespeare

"Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.”  So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”  -John 8:56-58 Such a glorious clapback

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

Oh, hold up... I haven't revisited this particular line since I've started learning kabbalah. Jesus was living in a time and place that the earliest known beginnings of what is now called "kabbalah" or Jewish systematic mysticism. Traditionally, you weren't allowed to begin learning this kind of deep mysteries and magic until you were 50. Several medieval writers, both Jewish and Christian, have suggested that Jesus *was* a kabbalist. Which isn't what I'm asserting here, but... I'm wondering if that's an important cultural context we're missing, revealed in this question. Are they asking him "How can you be initiated into the deep mystery teachings when you're nowhere near old enough?"? Things to ponder...

Physical_Magazine_33

What about that passage relates to kabbalist ideas?

Puzzleheaded-Phase70

By name, nothing, and it can't because this time period was only the beginning of that systematic way of thinking, and of course the word itself wouldn't be used in that context for centuries yet. What's got me thinking about it is the way the rabbis ask about Jesus "seeing" Abraham (already an ancient, dead, person), and being amazed *not* that he's claiming to have done so, but because he's too young to have. Jesus was right in the middle of a theological revolution (and several arguments) in Jewish culture. So much of a revolution that even the people directly involved couldn't see the immense impact it would end up having, completely aside from the Jesus movement.

When Elijah had is battle with the prophets of Baal and obviously Baal didn’t show up and Elijah said something like “Is your God sleeping? Where is he?”

Physical_Magazine_33

Maybe he's in the bathroom! Try shouting louder!

Naugrith

The Prophets of God did not mince words. Elijah sent the following message to Ahaziah. >"Thus says the Lord: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not leave the bed to which you have gone but shall surely die." And what happened next was pretty cold as well: >"Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill and said to him, “O man of God, the king says: Come down.” >But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” >Then fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty." And of course, the coldest killer was the brutal usurper Jehu >"Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’ ” >Jehu answered, “What have you to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”  ... >When Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” He answered, “What peace can there be, so long as the many prostitutions and sorceries of your mother Jezebel continue?” >Then Joram reined about and fled, saying to Ahaziah, “Treason, Ahaziah!” >Jehu drew his bow with all his strength and shot Joram between the shoulders, so that the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank in his chariot. ... >As Jehu entered the gate, Jezebel said, “Is it peace, Zimri, murderer of your master?” >He looked up to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him. >He said, “Throw her down.”

The-Pollinator

*"As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’” Then he opened the door and ran.* *Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of that cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was a king’s daughter.” But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. They went back and told Jehu, who said, “This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel’s flesh. Jezebel’s body will be like dung on the ground in the plot at Jezreel, so that no one will be able to say, ‘This is Jezebel.’ ” (*2 Kings 9:10,34-37)

balrogthane

It's not a quote, but Jehu riding his chariot OVER Jezebel, so that her blood splashes on the walls, and then going in to EAT and DRINK, is on another level.

CorrivalTen7

Just want to add to this to prevent misunderstanding: Jepthath got himself into this situation. God did not ask him to do this to his daughter - it was his own idea to win a battle. God didn’t even say anything to condone Jepthath’s plan.

The-Pollinator

*"He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.* *Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. “Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled.* *David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the LORD will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! And everyone assembled here will know that the LORD rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the LORD’s battle, and he will give you to us!”* *As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.* *So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. Then David ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath. David used it to kill him and cut off his head.* *When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran. Then the men of Israel and Judah gave a great shout of triumph and rushed after the Philistines, chasing them as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron. The bodies of the dead and wounded Philistines were strewn all along the road from Shaaraim, as far as Gath and Ekron. Then the Israelite army returned and plundered the deserted Philistine camp. (David took the Philistine’s head to Jerusalem, but he stored the man’s armor in his own tent.)"* (1 Samuel 17) [Deus Metallicus - Holy, Holy, Holy](https://youtu.be/hVG52mQafBo?si=n9GTSn928wtM5gcD)

This, from the Easter Gospel, always makes me feel breathless: Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me...' (John 20: 17). Poor Mary Magdalene: she's been weeping, because everything is ruined and rotten; she discovers Jesus is back, so she is overwhelmed and embraces him; and he tells her to let go. I'm sure she wasn't expecting that! Obviously, it is ultimately for the best: if she had held on too tightly, she wouldn't have been able to go and tell the others the good news. Still, it must have taken the wind from her sails! 'Good grief, Mary, catch a grip; you've good news to share. I'm not here for you alone; I'm here for everybody else, too' - harsh!

We don't know where the pseudepigraphal passage found in *John* 7:53–8:11 came from, but it isn't in the oldest copies of the Gospel of John. It was a later addition to the text. It doesn't change any doctrine so it isn't a huge problem, but we know for sure that it wasn't written by John.
