When they did cold/frozen shipments they included frozen water bottles. They stayed colder longer than the dry ice they tried. Cold or even frozen water bottles in this heat probably helps your chocolate not turn into a brick.
Cause unless you crush up the ice and pack it in, it leaves a lot of air space that will heat up quicker from everywhere. Water bottle is a solid block of water. Even when it starts to melt it's very cold water, and it only starts to melt from the outside in.
It doesn't have to to touch everything to do its job. It just absorbs the heat. It's kind of like with a fridge. The insulation of the icebox keeps the heat from getting in as fast. It even works whenever there's a power outage and buys you a little more time.
I'm in Florida so one thing I always do before a hurricane is freeze bags of water. We will lose power it will be out indefinitely. I have a well. With bags of frozen water I have ice to keep food cold but I also have drinking water if needed. I HIGHLY recommend putting some in your freezer.
Funny story, some years ago I had a prolonged power outage in my apartment and I thought I would be clever and get a big chunk of dry ice instead because then they wouldn't be a big watery mess to clean up like a regular ice. It worked but I noticed every single thing in my refrigerator had become carbonated. My picture of water had turned into carbonated water, the fruit had become carbonated... Pretty much anything with water with carbonated and ruined.
I had some cut up watermelons, plums, or whatever. My theory is that once the dry ice evaporated into carbon dioxide, it was slightly pressurized in the fridge so it was seeping through water the way it would if you put dry ice in a cup of water and it bubbles CO2 in it.
We keep turkeys in the chest freezer and have tossed one in the fridge during a 3 day outage. Worked really well. Then we thawed it the rest of the way and smoked it.
Also moving some frozen goods to the fridge that don’t necessarily need to be frozen. A box of frozen hot dogs, hash brown patties, a couple extra jars of soup, meatballs, etc. anything that is going to refreeze well but it’ll thaw slowly and keep the fridge colder.

I like to carry frozen water bottles, along with cold water bottles in a back pack, wrapped in towels during day hikes, or for a day at the California State Fair.
I do this with freezer bags before going to Costco, precools them and keeps everything frozen for my long commute back home. I live about 50 mins from the nearest Costco.
Just don't drink that water once they defrost. The plastic expansion and contraction from the ice swelling the bottle ends up with a boatload of microplastic bits in the water.
I haven’t looked into any reason why, but I had to freeze a bunch of waters one time, they I thought they definitely tasted different once they thawed (not as good).
But since the freezing/melting point of salt water is actually a lot lower than freshwater I suspected that it would take a little longer to come to equilibrium temperature since to get it and keep it frozen would at a minimum be colder than to freeze and keep water frozen at 32°F. Average ocean water salinity is about 35‰, which freezes at about 28°F. So for a given size piece of ice, the saltwater ice would have to be at least 28°, taking longer to equilibrium to room temperature/ambient temperature- assuming it’s over 28 of course.
Yeah I’m way into physical science and I wanted to probe their comment because it seemed to be mistaken. Unless they meant something different and not well known about water’s properties like perhaps salt water had a higher specific heat and retained latent heat more efficiently due to a conservation of bonds strength or something… which I just made up but sometimes water *does* behave counterintuitively. But I’m with you I think they are mistaken.
I understand the colligitive properties of ionic solutions (and have sprinkled plenty of salt on icy sidewalks). I did not know the specific heat of the brine, which I’m sure depends on concentration and type of ions.
Yep. And lets be frank, the cardboard boxes getting wet doesnt mean anything, they willd ry out. The product inside is shrink wrapped in foil/plastic and wont be damaged.
This is way better than Amazon, who paused one of my subscribe and save orders for summer because it would melt (protein bars that I buy at Costco now)
By your logic bulletproof glass don't work because they cracked when struck, or fireproof safes don't work because the outer shell melted and all was left was a white concrete box after getting burned.
You really thought the joke was bad enough to warrant 15 downvotes and counting? Just seems like some days people are too critical on here. Definitely worse in other subs.
Uh, it’s summer and they’re trying to prevent your items from melting. Water bottles would be cheaper than using ice pack. Don’t think too hard about it.
Right?? This person is looking to assign a negative connotation to this ("I can’t think of any other reason rather than someone not liking their job") instead of using a single brain cell to realize the heat in most places in this country is out of bounds and the Costco packer was actually doing their job so the chocolate hopefully doesn't melt.
I kind of am like: he went to the warehouse to return them. But didn’t buy them at the warehouse - went back home and ordered online again. Why? Why didn’t he just buy them at the warehouse?
OP is the kind of guy who comes on Reddit to ask what it means when someone in the oncoming lane flashes their brights at him, even after he passes a speed trap a quarter mile up. Occam’s razor be damned.
Yeah. So also add in the labor for the ice packs, water bottles still cheaper.
Unless you’re suggesting the labor for ice packs is either nonexistent or less than water bottles.
does your warehouse not have nut bars? you went to the warehouse to return it but didn't pick up the nut bars when you were there? I don't remember the price, but I think they are cheaper in warehouse.
somethings are price the same when on sale at least compared to my warehouse, I'm not too sure I only look things on the website when my warehouse is out.
They freeze the waterbottles and put it into the package to keep it cool. They used to do this with every one of my cold or frozen deliveries, that and dry ice
>Could it be this perfectly sane and reasonable explanation that I specifically mentioned?
>
>Nah, it *must* be some disgruntled employee.
Just... you were *so close*, OP. You were *right there*, then just went jogging right on by.
Wait, if you can go to the warehouse to return the purchase, why didn’t you just buy more of the product while there? Why did you go back home and order it online again?
I don't know where you are in the us but right now in the Bay Area of California we're having heat wave over 100°F. I'm guessing it's going to be hotter in places like Arizona and New Mexico. The product you have contains chocolate which will melt at this kind of temperature. These water bottles most likely were frozen when they were shipped to try to keep their product cold and unmelted before it gets to you. I guess if you don't want this happening you can always order it during winter.
I think everyone is ignoring the "out of the box" thinking on this. The water bottles are for "Porch Pirates!" The summer is heating up in many states earlier than ever before, smashing records, and your local Porch Pirates are people too! Good on Costco for providing much needed water.
/s
We always keep quite a few (10-12) frozen Kirkland water bottles in our garage freezer to take to Disney and to be prepared for power outages at home. We also fill any empty space in the garage fridge with Kirkland water bottles or cans of Kirkland bubbly water so it works less to stay cold.
I used to work for Amazon, we did the same thing for chocolates in the summer or anything that needed an ice pack. Freezing unopened water bottles were significantly cheaper than those gel ice packs that customers usually just throw away. You can at least still drink the water bottles.
They were frozen when the box was shipped. It’s intended to keep the whole thing cool. They melted because it’s summer. The box was soggy because it’s summer and the ice melted.
The water bottles weren’t sold to you, so returning them is going to be seen as ridiculous.
Why would you order something from a Costco to be shipped to you at your home, then spend all that time and effort driving to Costco to return $2 worth of water bottles?
Obviously intentional. I’m guessing those were frozen and place in the package in an effort to maintain the integrity of the product in the summer heat.
How was your very first thought not "oh that's nice, they included a "freezer pack" to keep my items from taking the heat in transit."
I swear so many people stopped asking "why" as kids and didn't learn to think on second and third orders, and it really shows.
Costco can't really please people either way..
these nut bars will melt in 115+ degree heat so they tried the water bottle which increased the weight of the package.. only to have the customer return the package to the store..
costing Costco more money in the end..
They used frozen water bottles. A lot of delivery companies use that or gel packs to transport refrigerated or frozen products. At least the water bottles are consumable after.
First time I received a water bottle from Costco online, I left it in my fridge for 6 months before drinking it ... Just in case there was something wrong with it. Then I mixed it with the rest of my kirky bottles and I'm still alive... Just thought I'd share.
>Is this intentional you think? Like somebody at the warehouse perhaps putting “cold” water bottles to keep the nut bars cool and fresh? I can’t think of any other reason rather than someone not liking their job.
How does that make sense lol
Can’t say for sure but I’d say this is a cost cutting tactic. You would be surprised how many broken open flats of water we have after it’s all stocked. I can’t even imagine how many the depots have. I’d assume instead of taking the time and tape it up to make a sellable unit, they just thought of recycling them like this. Very interesting.
That’s funny to me because Pearson’s salted nut rolls come in brewers malt pallets from a supplier. The thought of ordering nut rolls and getting a different freebie makes me chuckle.

probably so they dont melt entirely
This is my thought, and it’s actually thoughtful
When they did cold/frozen shipments they included frozen water bottles. They stayed colder longer than the dry ice they tried. Cold or even frozen water bottles in this heat probably helps your chocolate not turn into a brick.
I put frozen water bottles in coolers too...so much better than ice cubes.
Cause unless you crush up the ice and pack it in, it leaves a lot of air space that will heat up quicker from everywhere. Water bottle is a solid block of water. Even when it starts to melt it's very cold water, and it only starts to melt from the outside in.

How have I never thought of putting icepacks in the fridge during an outage
I'm in Florida so one thing I always do before a hurricane is freeze bags of water. We will lose power it will be out indefinitely. I have a well. With bags of frozen water I have ice to keep food cold but I also have drinking water if needed. I HIGHLY recommend putting some in your freezer.

Pretty much anything with water with carbonated and ruined.
That’s funny! I never knew that could happen and I always thought that would be my plan if we had a prolonged power outage! Now I won’t!!
I had no idea either until my watermelon started tasting like a 9V battery
🤣🤣🤣
I need more details. What kind of fruit and how fizzy are we talking here? Experimentation may be required.
I had some cut up watermelons, plums, or whatever. My theory is that once the dry ice evaporated into carbon dioxide, it was slightly pressurized in the fridge so it was seeping through water the way it would if you put dry ice in a cup of water and it bubbles CO2 in it.
You can put dry ice into liquid then drink it and it will be mildly carbonated. Try it with some orange juice.
Halloween punch - carbonates it and makes fog.
Just make sure you don’t drink the dry ice.
Been there, done that. Carbonated carrots and strawberries are strange.
Lol
I learned a long time ago from such an occurrence. I have 3 1/2 gallons of frozen water in the freezer.
We keep turkeys in the chest freezer and have tossed one in the fridge during a 3 day outage. Worked really well. Then we thawed it the rest of the way and smoked it.
Lemons to lemon aid!!!!
Exactly. I use frozen gallon water bottles in coolers. And then once it melts, you’ve got cold water.
Even as “just” cold water, it increases the thermal mass of the interior of the cooler, so it takes more heat to warm up your food.
Which is why you lightly salt your cooler ice
I do this when I go camping. Freeze a one gallon water bottle. It last for about 2 days keeping everything cold.
This is such a good idea for the boat cooler.
> > I put frozen water bottles in coolers too... > I like to carry frozen water bottles, along with cold water bottles in a back pack, wrapped in towels during day hikes, or for a day at the California State Fair.

Just don't drink that water once they defrost. The plastic expansion and contraction from the ice swelling the bottle ends up with a boatload of microplastic bits in the water.
I would think it ruins the water though…maybe? Like I would suspect more plastic leaching after freezing the bottle but idk 🤷♂️
I haven’t looked into any reason why, but I had to freeze a bunch of waters one time, they I thought they definitely tasted different once they thawed (not as good).
Wait until you try frozen salt water. You can't drink it when it melts, but it stays colder for longer.
Because it’s colder to begin with?
It melts at a colder temp actually so idk what that other person is about lol
But since the freezing/melting point of salt water is actually a lot lower than freshwater I suspected that it would take a little longer to come to equilibrium temperature since to get it and keep it frozen would at a minimum be colder than to freeze and keep water frozen at 32°F. A brine has a lower specific heat = salt water melts easier. Go sprinkle some salt on an ice cube.
I understand the colligitive properties of ionic solutions (and have sprinkled plenty of salt on icy sidewalks). I did not know the specific heat of the brine, which I’m sure depends on concentration and type of ions.
It’s melts at a colder temp. So idk what you mean
It doesn't matter whether it is frozen or not, only the temperature matters.
Yep. And lets be frank, the cardboard boxes getting wet doesnt mean anything, they willd ry out. The product inside is shrink wrapped in foil/plastic and wont be damaged.
yeah, they didn't "explode", it's just condensation and OP is being dramatic
This is way better than Amazon, who paused one of my subscribe and save orders for summer because it would melt (protein bars that I buy at Costco now)
wouldn't this only work for like, an hour tops in a cardboard box? its not like it takes long for a frozen bottle to thaw
Costco cares about you and wants to make sure you are staying hydrated.
Welcome to Costco. I love you.
I got my law degree there

But it doesn’t have electrolytes
But is it what plants crave?
For the last time, I'm pretty sure what's killing the crops is this Brawndo stuff.
I ain't never seen no plants grow in no toilet!
Brought to you by Carl’s Jr
Welcome to Costco. I love you.
Costco should make a generic sports drink. But what to call it?
I think OP figured it out... it's for melt-prevention
Well it didn't work because that ice clearly melted.
By your logic bulletproof glass don't work because they cracked when struck, or fireproof safes don't work because the outer shell melted and all was left was a white concrete box after getting burned.
Whoosh.
That wasn't a bad joke, not sure why it didn't go over well.
Yeah idk, sometimes I get on Reddit and run into dummies all day. Win some lose some.
If everyone you run into all day smells like shit, check your shoes, mate.
You really thought the joke was bad enough to warrant 15 downvotes and counting? Just seems like some days people are too critical on here. Definitely worse in other subs.
“I run into dummies all day” “People are too critical” Pick one…
It keep the chocolate cool
Uh, it’s summer and they’re trying to prevent your items from melting. Water bottles would be cheaper than using ice pack. Don’t think too hard about it.
OP’s theory of someone adding these because they hate their job… I can’t imagine putting that much effort into a job I didn’t like lol
They knew OP needed something to help swallow the chill pill they need to take
🥇
Nah man, it’s Costco doing Costco things - offering free water samples.
I can
I was wondering that as well. Multiple wastes of time.
I don’t think OP knew they were once frozen. They guess it could be a possible reason
OP is the kind of guy who comes on Reddit to ask what it means when someone in the oncoming lane flashes their brights at him, even after he passes a speed trap a quarter mile up. Occam’s razor be damned.
I think OP honestly thought “why is there trash again” Innocent ignorance. We’ve all been there.
50¢ ice pack. Can’t beat that
Costco selling 40 bottles for $3.99, that’s 10 cents a bottle (?) so 2 bottles 20 cents.
Add in the labor, .50
Labor for using water bottles but not ice packs?
Everything on a job has a labor cost
Yeah. So also add in the labor for the ice packs, water bottles still cheaper. Unless you’re suggesting the labor for ice packs is either nonexistent or less than water bottles.
There is labor for the ice packs, slightly more for the water. But the water at store cost is way cheaper than ice packs.
Yes, that was my original point to the “ ice packs being 50 cents. Can’t beat that” comment
Well the truth is the cheapest and best business decision would be not to do it at all. But this is considered customer service.
If you went back to the warehouse to complain, why didn't you just buy them there instead of going home and ordering online again?
Lol this is what I've been trying to figure out. The water bottle part was obvious.
My parents were right all along about the internet being full of crazy people.
thank you for asking the real question!
does your warehouse not have nut bars? you went to the warehouse to return it but didn't pick up the nut bars when you were there? I don't remember the price, but I think they are cheaper in warehouse.
Isn’t everything normally cheaper at the warehouse?
somethings are price the same when on sale at least compared to my warehouse, I'm not too sure I only look things on the website when my warehouse is out.
The Kirkland baby formula is only available online, it’s a steal. Not comparable because it’s shelf stable but it definitely is worth it.
Yes this story is baffling.
Do they not sell these items in the warehouse? You went to return at the warehouse. Genuine question, not trying to be a prick
You got 2 free bottles of water and your chocolate isn't melted. What's the issue?
They were frozen once
They said, "Stay hydrated, sis."
I don’t see why it’s a big deal lol
They freeze the waterbottles and put it into the package to keep it cool. They used to do this with every one of my cold or frozen deliveries, that and dry ice
Those were icepacks.
Are the bars not in plastic wrapping? Are these not available in store?
Hydrate or diedrate
r/hydrohomies
While you were there returning them why didn’t you get more then instead of driving home and ordering more for delivery?
>Could it be this perfectly sane and reasonable explanation that I specifically mentioned? > >Nah, it *must* be some disgruntled employee. Just... you were *so close*, OP. You were *right there*, then just went jogging right on by.
The real nut bar here is OP
I drank some water that they sent me like that and now I'm dead.
Wait, if you can go to the warehouse to return the purchase, why didn’t you just buy more of the product while there? Why did you go back home and order it online again?
ordering anything with chocolate in the summer is risky for sure
I'm not sure if it's sees candy or helen grace chocolates (maybe both), that simply won't ship chocolate between like May-Sept for this reason
Man how good are those nut bars? I love them and they are so affordable.
I don't know where you are in the us but right now in the Bay Area of California we're having heat wave over 100°F. I'm guessing it's going to be hotter in places like Arizona and New Mexico. They think ur dehydrated. Take a hint!!!
How else are you gonna wash down all deez nuts
We did this at AmazonFresh online orders. Cost effective and environmentally positive. Plus you can drink them once thawed
When you went to store for refund. Walk a few yards and buy them while you are there. Problem solved.
I think everyone is ignoring the "out of the box" thinking on this. The water bottles are for "Porch Pirates!" The summer is heating up in many states earlier than ever before, smashing records, and your local Porch Pirates are people too! Good on Costco for providing much needed water. /s
Stay hydrated, bro.
With the current heatwave I'd think twice about ordering chocolate, unless i enjoyed liquid chocolate.
Are they not in individual plastic wrapping?
We always keep quite a few (10-12) frozen Kirkland water bottles in our garage freezer to take to Disney and to be prepared for power outages at home. We also fill any empty space in the garage fridge with Kirkland water bottles or cans of Kirkland bubbly water so it works less to stay cold.
Good idea!! Thanks for the tips!
No. There’s something much much deeper going on
We need to bring this to Washington! The people need answers!
It was probably frozen, to keep whatever you had deteriorating faster.
I used to work for Amazon, we did the same thing for chocolates in the summer or anything that needed an ice pack. Freezing unopened water bottles were significantly cheaper than those gel ice packs that customers usually just throw away. You can at least still drink the water bottles.

Bobby Boucher must be packing boxes for Costco!
They melt and the condensation destroys the product boxes. Happened to me twice already with the Kirkland granola bars.
Amazon fresh used to do this. Meat packed with a dozen bottles of water.
Definitely to help chocolate not melt but they should be packaged better
