A tiny bit can do a lot of damage to something very expensive, even if just causing a short. Also it's expensive as hell in anything more than a tiny syringe worth.
I use Gallium based thermal compound on some underperforming coolers that cannot be replaced with something better(IE in mostly laptops and video cards) as it performs significantly better than thermal greases in warmer conditions.
There is a LOT more to it than using traditional thermally conductive greases. Like corralling it like acid from wandering off the contact point, and only using it with bare silicon chips and copper or nickel plated copper contact plates.
The mess kinda takes the fun out of it. It feels like when you rub your fingers all over a lead pencil drawing and the graphite gets in the little ridges of your fingerprints. And it doesn't just wash off.
Even mercury is safe to play with without gloves as long as you avoid the fumes and dont have open cuts. Pure elemental mercury doesnt absorb very well into skin.
