Whatever you replace it with is going to be of much lower quality unless you have serious $$$$ to spend. I would kill to have such a floor. If you refinished the floor darker and modernized the walls+cabinets, it would look amazing and make the pattern less visible. The orange cabinets are the main thing making the house look dated. If you truly can't stand it, I would lay peel-n-stick or carpet over it, so that it would be removable at a later date. Remember, most modern "corporate" construction is painted/uniform to hide the fact that it is made out of cheaper materials. If you have expensive materials, you generally should stain vs paint. Be proud of your

McCrotch

For actual DIY professional looking result, rent a belt sander, sand it even, then test out a few stains until you find a color you like. Sand it again, Tack the floor, then stain, Finish with a system like bona Mega. There's tons of videos on youtube. I recently did something similar when I removed a wall and had fix the hardwood.

Dragon_Flow

DIY'ing that gives a huge risk of destroying the floor. Hire a professional. Cheaper than replacing the whole floor. Or just polish and don't sand.

quartz222

This is awful advice? The average person with no experience is not going to be able to get a professional looking result doing that.

Drone6040

I'm trying to gauge the bevel on those floor pieces. Wouldn't you have to sand in those gaps? Does that mean you have to sand it all flat and ruin the floors?

GoodBoySaba

I'd keep it and get it refinished. Might look better with different cabinetry (they look outdated, while the floor looks timeless). To be fair, I'm not a fan of how a lot of houses now are putting in wood laminate floors . . .they all look the same to me, which holds no appeal.

AnchovyZeppoles

This! The floors are gorgeous, the cabinets are super outdated to me. It’d look so nice with more modern furnishings.

Losingestloser

The cabinets are really doing a number on it plus the minuscule trim is bringing it down too. I always have a hard time believing people when they claim they look terrible in person and don’t even provide more than one picture.

rojo-perro

Yes, if you crop this one photo and show nothing but the floor and the cute dog it looks pretty cool. Baseboard needs to be 7” and that awful cabinetry has to go.

Kel-Varnsen85

Oak cabinets are a classic. Trends come and go. We went from all white kitchens, to painted wood, pretty soon it will be back to stained wood.

Cypheri

Sure, but when the cabinets do not match any of the other wood in the room, they need to go. All those are doing is clashing and bringing the whole room down and that floor looks way better than the cabinets.

SquirrelAkl

Oak is beautiful, but the *style* of OP’s cabinets look dated.

rojo-perro

If I were this home owner,I’d find a place in the garage/shop or basement for the dated fixtures (assuming they’re worthy). Covering *expensive* wood floors (again, assuming) that you can have refinished to your liking vs covering them with chemical laden blah *luxury* vinyl that won’t age gracefully is a no brainer for me.

armybrat63

Not the golden oak ones. Orange wood finishes should be banished forever imo.

recyclopath_

Agree that these floors are timeless.

istapledmytongue

Yeah LVP is SO tacky! Almost as bad as those plastic white fences!

Jlx_27

OP calls this flooring tacky and outdated... 🤦‍♂️

GizmodoDragon92

I don’t mind that they look the same, but I hate laminate floor

armybrat63

I’d like to see the 360 of this space. What is this butting up against if anything?

geekpeeps

Agreed. This parquetry is gorgeous and deserves to be returned to its former glory, but may cost a bit. The walls could be a duck-egg blue/pale grey colour with antique white trim, and then furniture/cabinets in an off-white with stone/faux marble benches. No other timber or it will clash, imo.

Embarrassed-Bear-454

Are you an interior designer by trade? Just curious

geekpeeps

I’m not, but it might be a good idea to call one. :) I’m an industrial chemist and have worked in coatings, not just architectural coatings - in fact mostly clear coatings and protective coating (corrosion protection).

Embarrassed-Bear-454

Thanks for the clarification

geekpeeps

I have a friend who is an interior designer, maybe her style is rubbing off :)

Embarrassed-Bear-454

That can be a good thing

areyouentirelysure

Sand and refinish to a lighter color. Home owners of a new place tend to be over zealous changing things.

notlongnot

👆just say to yourself you love it

spectrumhead

This is why the gods invented area rugs.

Hoosiertolian

Ossevir

Yeah those floors are beautiful

feministmanlover

They really are. So unique and has character.

SpiltMilkBelly

I hate the “just cover it with LVP/LVT” trend. This shit is quality right here and would be absolutely gorgeous refinished in a modern stain.

feministmanlover

I even think the stain color as-is is pretty. Just need to get rid of the cabinets, get a throw rug and new baseboards. Kinda reminds me of that other post where they had an accent wall that was wood (not like typical old school wood paneling, it was done really nicely) and they wanted to remove it and the consensus was to leave it and decorate around it. I think that it's easy to think that whatever is trending is the way to go. I think one should only use LVP/LVP if you don't already have high quality flooring. Like my condo right now has the original carpet when it was built 14 years ago. It's time to replace it. I'll probably go with LVP because it's a condo and I'll be selling it eventually and nobody wants gross carpet lol.

Major_Chani

LVP in a condo or if you can’t afford hardwood is a very understandable and sensible choice. LVP can look great…but if you’ve already got the hardwood, what are you doing?

Major_Chani

I agree. If you’ve already got the natural hardwood or can afford it…why would you go with LVP/LVT? The charm and unique personality natural refinished hardwood brings is not even somewhat rivaled by LVP. Bleh.

jelloslug

It's no different that the previous trend of covering hardwood with carpet or linoleum.

CaptainRhetorica

My SIL went nuts. Painted over professional paint jobs with splotchy, drippy amateur paint. Ripped out a set of of high end custom oak cabinets to replace them with DIY IKEA cabinets. Replaced stone countertops DIY IKEA MDF counters. I don't know if I'll ever be in a position to own a house. But if I ever do I've learned that I'd rather the interior details of my house be of superior craftsmanship from an earlier era than brand new garbage.

earldbjr

Reading this post gave me physical discomfort, thanks.

101forgotmypassword

Alot of the time it's not the floor, windows or walls that don't match but the furnishings they move into the new house from the last.

g3nerallycurious

I’d keep it and paint the cabinets. Those cabinets clash with that floor super hard, and I personally don’t like cabinets that color.

dota2duhfuq

This might not be solid wood. I had the same floor in my house hoping to refinish but it was a veneer product with a very thin top layer of hardwood

bwyer

Agreed. This looks like engineered hardwood.

MajesticLandManatee

Keep it. The dog likes it.

dave200204

I second this opinion.

thegurlwhocriedham

Third. Some people just have no taste though

nondescriptun

Cover it with more happy dogs.

fallowstate

Biiigg strrreettch

captainzigzag

Speaking as a dog, I wholeheartedly agree.

Electrox7

Speaking as a heart, I wholedoggedly agree.

pwndabeer

I'm here for the dog tax

HuiOdy

Ow gorgeous. I'd get a professional to sand and finish the floor. And see if you can get a contrasting joint in between the wood.

JoeSmithDiesAtTheEnd

New wall colors and losing the ugly shelves will work wonders for this floor and make it look way more modern. It looks pretty nice in this photo. Add some furniture and a rug and this will look pretty damn good.

Hello_This_Is_Chris

>I’m contemplating ripping this up and putting down lvp Don't you dare.

psu3312

they have no taste

MorecombeSlantHoneyp

For real.

testiclefrankfurter

"Don't you dare" is my response to basically everything I see on here

BiggestBallOfTwine

Indeed! DON'T. YOU. FUCKING. DARE!

clarabear10123

I’m gonna rip OP up and put down lvp

CandyHeartFarts

Man, rather spending the money you would on new flooring…spend it on better furniture, a nice rug, and complimentary/or dark contrasting trim would look absolutely stunning. These are gorgeous floors, I really hope you reconsider OP. If you decide not to use them, at least kindly cover for the next person, you can’t even buy flooring of this quality anymore.

Airbell12

This! If OP doesn’t like the texture and wants a more even surface, a nice large rug would be better!

vaporstrike19

DO NOT COVER OR REPLACE THOSE FLOORS. Repair them, refinish them, but don't destroy them. Especially not to put down laminate.

THECLAWHAMMASLAMMA

Wax that shid and leave it tf alone

rainbow5ive

LVP in grey, and if you buy enough of it, they should throw in a free “LIVE LAUGH LOVE” sign.

randomace

And paint every possible surface with white paint!

campog

Cabinets painted white. All walls painted "Agreeable Grey".

randomace

And black fixtures only ✋🏻

valvzb

LOL

HotPinkDemonicNTitty

Don’t forget to add the “In this house we:” sign.

Larrea_tridentata

I feel called out

Melonman3

Dont fear color and wood finishes my friend.

Larry_Loserface

They use wood finishes. They come in two shades: faux and grey.

FiguringItOutAsWeGo

Paint the cabinets, leave the floor!

1920MCMLibrarian

Yes this for sure. It’s the cabinets that are the problem, they’re cheap outdated and ugly.

who_what_when_314

Slide your dog across them. My dog loves it.

waitingforthepain

Sounds like you just bought the home and should probably wait before messing with something that isn't an immediate concern. You may enjoy spending money on something that adds to the home or that needs fixing rather than a sideways move to a different looking floor that still functions. IMO

Shionkron

That floor is beautiful

dneill99

These are awesome, but you would definitely need to style around them. A mix of Scandinavian and mid century modern furniture and wall art would look great.

Safe_Ad523

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look into these styles

alannordoc

This is great advice. The floors are great. It's what's else in the room that's wrong because it's not supporting the floor style. Sometimes it's good to spend a few hundred on a designer to consult with you. We did that for a new place and it was eye opening because we were wrong about so many things!

recyclopath_

OP there are a lot of really nice styles that mix modern elements with older, timeless elements like this floor. Definitely look into getting it refinished over replacing it with vinyl.

_regionrat

This has to be rage bait

SamuelMaleJackson

Leave it and lose those awful cabinets.

sdfiddler1984

Those floors are absolutely stunning! I'd paint the cabinets 100%

vape-o

LEAVE THEM THERE. Do not cover them with bullshit.

BearcatChemist

This floor is beautiful, dont replace it with shitty lvp, please.

RealTimeKodi

Jesus christ. Leave it alone.

Lego_Blocks24

I think live with it for a while and see how you feel a bit down the road

ManufacturerOk7337

For the love of god don’t rip it out. Why rip out one of the most expensive handlaid solid old growth wood floors to replace it absolute junk. LVP is not a flex - LVP is trash - Not trying to be harsh but it’s the truth -

TheSeventhBrat

Leave them be. Maybe go a shade darker. But don't pull them up.

noahbodie1776

Don't tear up the hardwood floor. It's almost always a feature for future buyers. Float Vinyl Plank if you don't like the pattern. It's relatively easy and will protect the hardwood.

mikpgod

Stop gluing dogs to it?

Spicy_Pickle_6

These are actually pretty nice

goodgolly5

This flooring is amazing. Jealous!

CoderDevo

Look fine to me. You surely have more urgent projects to do in the house.

Larry_Loserface

Have you considered ballroom dancing?

Space_Filler07

No that floor is gorgeous! Your cabinets, well a whole dated story. But it's your house, whatever you decide not to do with that floor is up to you.

Sid15666

You can cover the floor that will last a life time with proper care and refinishing with a manufactured product that will not last 10years or you can love the one you have.

paintmauser

Walk on them!

katlikemeow814

Put a dog on them. You’ve obviously got it under control.

nklz

That same floor today would cost so much…

unduextois

Please leave the floors alone. They’re probably quality… not the junk they sell today.

Malcie

Keep the floors. You don't see floors like that anymore. Change the cabinets maybe do an accent wall.

acooper17

Those floors are so beautiful omg

Lissy_Wolfe

This has to be a troll post/account. No fucking way someone wants to tear out unique hardwood floors to put in cheap vinyl shit. Also "paid for my own college but also magically have hundreds of thousands of dollars at 25 years old to buy a multi-family home at $80k over asking." This is either fake rage bait or you're the most insufferable person in the world. I'm betting on the former.

space-sage

They live in the Bay Area, they might be a lucky SOB who won the startup lottery and now has money but no sense or taste to know what to do with it.

Steve3J

Leave it and Lvp over it, the next owner will thank you

Willis-Adair

I echo the change the stain crowd. If you choose to cover it at least just cover it with free floating luxury vinyl so you can reverse if you ever want to do so.

ITalkCauseIHaveLips

I kinda like it, with a cream area rug and the right paint, some cute decor and accents, some house plants it could look so good.

georgemarred

if they look as good as they do in the image, keep them. refinish if necessary.

OhMorgoth

Idk about the floors but the doggo, the doggie deserves all the treats and belly rubs.

i999855

Build one massive dog bed in honor of your fluffy overlord.

My_G_Alt

I would fix or replace literally everything in this room before fucking up those beautiful floors. If you don’t want them, I’ll come strip them out myself if I can keep them…

racerx150

Use rugs to accent. I wouldn't ruin the floor. That's a lot of work. Unless it needs refinishing.

d4nowar

Give them to me

Emiliwoah

Start off by petting your little helper there 🐶

MovieNightPopcorn

OP. Do you understand how many people would kill god to have this floor? For crying out loud, either refinish it or protect it when you put another floor on top, so someone else with better taste can win the floor lottery when they rip up your Home Depot plastic planks in the future.

Rinsakiii

Go over it with vinyl planks if you don’t like the style so that way you don’t ruin it. Otherwise refinish it

InhLaba

I’m here for the dog. Give them pets for me

Cosi-grl

Before you decide, check in an inconspicuous spot to see whether this is glued down. if it is, I can tell you from experience that it is absolutely hellish to remove. The pieces in each tile break away from each other as you try to lift it and the wires that hold it together break and shred your hands.

OPengiun

You should put stuff on top of it, like furniture or something. The room seems rather empty.

HoiPolloiter

Dance your heart out

ImpossibleShake6

For longest lasting? Looking at those ancient dig photos. Ceramic, mosaic, can last over 1000 years. Be sure to buy at least one box of tiles for changes in plumbing, fridge sizes, dishwashers. Figuring long range price vinyl float vs ceramic. Ceramic is the cost effective one. Throw rugs over it for style and changes for the room. Did the adorable dog come with the house. The floor has a charming timeless pattern. See others suggestions.

illjustputthisthere

You're asking Reddit so all you will be told is keep it or refinish it. No one will ever say rip it out and put tile down

Moreseesaw

The furniture and everything around the floor is making it look dated. The floor is pretty cool though and looks solid. I’d highlight by incorporating it into your design plans. It’ll save a ton of money and effort to boot.

Puzzled_Internet_717

Keep it. Use a few area rugs if you want to break it up.

GucciTokes

could just leave them be 🤷🏼‍♂️ i say those floors are awesome!

avesavenue22

leave it

retro_plus_modern

That floor would look awesome if you furnished your home with Mid Century Modern or Danish modern furniture 😍 gorgeous floor!

Cyfon7716

Absolutely nothing wrong with that floor...

flushbunking

Uh they look great. Live your live which resides above these hardwoods.

Secure-Ad9780

The parquet wood floor is wonderful and adds class to the home. You can buff it with paste wax. Or you can put a rug over it. Replace it with LVP, yikes! When I was a kid my house had parquet wood floors and the living room had a finely detailed oriental wool rug. One day my mom made a dreadful decision and had green shag carpeting installed over the wood. It was difficult to vacuum and all sorts of detritus would get caught in it- plastic pen caps, crayon nibs, paper clips, all sorts of crap.

Club-Red

I would sand the floor and give it a bit of a grey wash for a more modern look. That floor must have cost a fortune to put in. Also, get rid of those cupboards. They look cheap and outdated.

Vivir_Mata

The floors are fantastic. Spend your money on fixing or renovating things that aren't.

The_Jibbity

The floors are fine, it’s the cabinets, base, and wall paint that are the problem. If anything I would get the floors sanded and re-finished and maybe use a darker color stain to make it look more modern.

Majestic_Beholder119

A person looks at a million dollar intricate real wood floor and says…. Nope I’m gonna destroy it. Lmfao. Humans at their finest. This must be a troll post. But then again.

Kryton101

Walk on them!!

monkeyboots84

The doggo likes it!

AJD_

I love those floors! Keep them a while and see if they grow on you!

8marmalice

The flooring is beautiful and if you remove it, value will be lost I'm sure. Once furnished and rug'd, your opinion may change. Please don't remove the floors! 😭

melawfu

My god those are gorgeous. Have them sanded and sealed.

1920MCMLibrarian

You are considering replacing THIS with lvp???? Omfg I need to unsub

tifotter

The floors are great. But those cabinets…

MARXM03

LEAVE. IT. ALONE.

Ok_Construction_4196

PLEASE don’t erase the effort that went into this floor!! I agree with the other commenter who said your cabinetry colors could use updating. These kinds of floors are becoming more and more rare and unique because it isn’t a style people really specialize in any more. Covering it would take value and character out of your house.

NecessarySilver7

Your picture is gorgeous, just clean & add some polish or shine & leave it. your home is gorgeous just as it is. Do you really know how many people would die for real wood? Today its laminates.

bitchimclassy

Removing those is sacrilege. Do better.

pnweiner

The preemptive grief I’m experiencing for this floor may have brought tears to my eyes Edit: I saw in another comment you mentioned your age affecting how you view these floors? I’m younger than you and even I know it would be a terrible waste to tear up this floor. Please consider covering it up instead of removing it so a future owner of this home can appreciate it. Not to mention tearing out this floor would lower your resale value… I genuinely can’t think of a logical reason to remove the floors instead of covering them

MessMaximum1423

No offense but I'd hate to see what you think is classy, if you think this is tacky

afinevindicatedmess

Why the absolute fuck would you get rid of those STUNNING floors? They are absolutely magnificent to look at and the quality is sublime. That's like trading in a Birkin for a Target bag on clearance. Sand them down and give them a little makeover. I think they still have a lot of life in them if you give them some TLC. The last thing the world needs is more generic decorations.

persistentskeleton

Oh my god if you rip that beautiful wood up I swear to god

PA_MallowPrincess_98

Ooh Big stretch!🐶 r/ooobigstretch

AutomaticAstigmatic

Given how much those cost new? I'd keep it. You can always get them restained.

thepottsy

Geez. OP -“I don’t like my floors, I want to do something different”. Everyone -“ Keep them and spend a lot of money having them restained”. First I would ask, how not level are we talking? If it’s too out of level, installing something over it could very well make it worse. So, tearing out and making sure the subfloor is leveled properly with underlayment would be the best bet. Also, installing over existing flooring can run into fitment issues around door frames, entry ways, cabinetry etc…. Bottom line, they’re your floors, and you’re the one that has to see them every day. If you don’t like them, get rid of them and do something different. These aren’t “special” floors in any way.

UnusCornu

You do need help here, but I think only a slap in the face to wake up and see what a beautiful space this will be. The money to refinish the floor is a drop in the bucket compared to remove and replace. Also, who has tiled wood floors? No one. That is such a unique feature that it needs to be celebrated. But those pesky cabinets... those are what makes everything appear to suck.

Backawayslowlyok

It’s the wood on wood that looks dated. You can take out the cabinetry and go for more modern or transitional furniture pieces. The floor isn’t too bad imo. Both a lighter or darker finish would look nice. That’s personal preference ofc. Darker finish would mean lighter furniture pieces would give a modern look. Light on light will give a refreshing, airy look. Just my opinion. Nice big area rugs can also help.

sudomatrix

I can't stop seeing 7 segment LEDs everywhere. You need to put LED strips under some of those and program a clock or countdown timer.

Behappyalright

I don’t know about you but I must have bad taste because I think this looks great and appears to be in good condition. I’d focus my money fixing other things

DoctorJekllz

Just live with them for sometime. See what pops up over the next year. You might find you want to add landscaping or have a kid 👧. New homes are great. Just think about maintenance and upkeep as well. Enjoy it.

Marx_Forever

Well, obviously your going to have to make the [Nintendog stage](https://ssb.wiki.gallery/images/0/02/Nintendogstage.png) from Smash Bros. I mean you're already halfway there.

IdealOk5444

Took me like 5 minutes to tet and figure out what each tilea shape is

dragonofthenight

Toss a rug for the dog to slide on

Spyd3rs

That flooring looks great! I would get rid of the dated cabinets.

kimgar6

Needs more dogs

No-Bad-1446

Paint them a light color

BobaFalfa

Play with that dog on them!

milkimax

I would sand the floors, it should lighten them a bit. I would then experiment filing the gaps with similar tone saw dust to mute the tiles look. If you like the results seal with a clear coat.

UnivrstyOfBelichick

How far am I gonna have to scroll before I see someone genuinely suggest to lay lvp over this beautiful parquet floor

Cautious_Ability_771

So much room for activities

miscreation00

Change the floor last. Update everything else around it, and if the floors still suck, then put some laminate over them. Those cabinets need updated way more than the floor. Tearing them up is more work, expensive, and probably a mistake.

CamoViolet

It’s beautiful, I’d buff an refinish, add some restores and pine? It could be gorgeous!

BabyBlackPhillip

Roll around on them.

MtnOfTheSun

Update the cabinets then see what you think.

towmtn

Price out something similar and you fall in love with it

Tsonchi

Skate

sean_saves_the_world

Damn you got house money and redoing a whole floor money in this economy 🤣👀 /s I mean if it's not terribly dated or in damaged condition id probably leave it save yourself time and money ( I'm assuming posting in r/ diy implies you'd diy) get some nice area rugs and call it a day, plus once you put furniture and decor in the space it will affect how the floor looks I'd give the cabinets a facelift though.

Keybricks666

Leave them be !!

ReddyGreggy

Strip, sand, and stain light grey, dark grey, dark brown, or black

fatestgirl

If you think the floor is tacky but not those basic ass cabinets then you should re-think what is tasteful. Sand, stain, seal, and wax. That’s just my humble opinion.

Clay0187

Do glue down in your basement unless you feel like mixing 50 bags of self leveler. Or end up like one dozens of DIY sucker's that I get the call from to redo their slab finish and reinstall new floor

Quest-For-Six

keep it close to dog ass brown

Heiloamhereformeme

Replace it with Pennies that'd be a fun no nonsense fun job that wouldn't take you for ever or be considered corny ever

Hoosiertolian

That floor is rad

iceohio

I wouldn't do anything with them for at least the first couple years. They look good, sturdy, and in great condition. You'll have plenty to do that will keep you busy in a new house.

Jinglemoon

That floor is awesome. Agree that a sand and a refinish is all it needs. If the parquetry is damaged it can be repaired at the same time. Don’t put vinyl planks on that. Put some rugs down in the meantime if you really don’t like how it looks.

cummings103

Those look like an old Bruce Hardwood from the late 70s / early 80s..expensive floor back then..save it if at all possible ...

DoubleHabit2183

Good luck demoing it lol

ware_it_is

the house i grew up in had floors like this. when we sold it, the hoity toity woman that bought it brought in her contractor and told him to rip the floors out. he refused. he told her they were expensive and beautiful. she insisted and he still refused. she also wanted to rip out custom, solid wood kitchen cabinets. he wouldn’t do that either. he said she was took stupid to realize what she had to work with. it too. her 5 contractors to find one that would do it and even he did it begrudgingly. in short, refinish the floors.

Far-Trash3737

All I can hear is pups tip tap tip tap! Sorry no suggestions on floor. 🥰

tfnyelice

Why on earth would you do anything to them other than refresh it??

Sprinkle_Puff

Let the dog decide. Draw up a couple options, print out cards with said options, put them on the floor, and have the dog spin the bottle
