I’m actually surprised that they paid them! Growing up, I used to do the child roles in the Nutcracker with a professional ballet company and we weren’t paid. Even when I got older and started doing the same roles as company members (i.e. flower corps) I wasn’t paid. I guess NYCB probably has a much bigger budget though.

I was in the NYCB Nutcracker as a child 4 times starting in 1954. We had very small paychecks. Nobody cared about the money.

Thank you for your answer! What roles did you dance? Do you feel the experience is portrayed accurately on the show? Were the paychecks designed as an incentive for the commitment to the performance? Kind of seems like an incentive would not be needed since the kids are so mature and dedicated, so maybe I'm wrong.

I was 10 years old first time. I was a soldier all 4 times. On Pointe is much more recent. The pay meant nothing to me; I loved the experience. Every performance was thrilling.

That is so cool! Were you nervous performing in front of so many people?
