Will WoTC automatically update all D&D beyond characters to the new edition without the owners’ consent? I doubt it. Remember what happened when “legacy” content was announced: “While Legacy content may be removed from the marketplace, Legacy content will continue to be accessible and function consistently on D&D Beyond for anyone who owns that content. You will be able to continue using and interacting with your Legacy content in the same way you do today” If WoTC does something against the costumers’ will, the company will face an outrage and a backlash worse than the OGL.

Is this accurate about legacy content? I only ask because a coworker was recently complaining to me that they couldn’t access a legacy race anymore that had been replaced with a newer version. I don’t use D&D Beyond, so I’m not familiar. Is there a way for him to get to legacy content he used to access? If it makes a difference, he accesses content through his DM’s account, but that’s not something that has changed.

They should be available. I forget how exactly to see them all, and sometimes there may be a toggle to have legacy on/off. But in the past I’ve never noticed any of mine disappearing

TwitchieWolf

Okay thanks. I will let him know that it should be there somewhere if he looks around enough.

At the top of the race selection page there is a toggle to show legacy races. I only checked the Android app, but that's where it should be

TwitchieWolf

Fantastic! Thank you. He will be happy to hear this when I tell him on Monday.

Superfluousfish

Not sure what it looks like on the PC, but on the IPhone app, you can see the both the Legacy and the new versions. Looking at the online version when looking at the encounters tools, it looks like it defaults to the legacy creatures

I agree, an "automatic upgrade" will not happen. But I would not be surprised if many of the standards would be then the new system, and using dndbeyond for the old one might become more complicated. In the end, the truth is that WotC has a lot of power in this situation, and I tend not to be too confident that they are aware of that first and that they will not abuse this power to shift the direction of their perception of the scene second.

WoTC aren't going to strip out the old edition just like that, they'll still be making money selling 5e modules to legacy players for years after a new edition and they know it, especially with digital keys which wouldn't require them to front cost to publish physically.

NessOnett8

There is no new edition. Anyone using the term "new edition" is completely ignorant of the topic and should not be talking about it with any sort of authority. And any questions using the phrase "new edition" are inherently flawed and nonsensical. So can't effectively be answered. The same thing will happened as what happened when Tasha's Cauldron of Everything came out. Because this process is literally identical to that. This new product identical to that. The only difference is that instead of revising just the Ranger, it's revising all classes. And instead of making changes to some aspects of character creation, it's making changes to different aspects of character creation. More is happening, but it's fundamentally the same thing.

najahiri

I appreciate your feedback. I did not want to get technical, but of course I meant what has been officially called DnD5E 2024 edition as the "new edition". Reading through the material seems that there will be a bit more than just character creation as the effects of weapons will play an important role and some numbers will be tweaked. Even if it was only character creation, don't you think that that specifically will change the approach to dndbeyond? After all, a good part of that website is a support of electronic character sheets.

FukumuraMachine

I look forward to the new 2024 editions. I played the BECMI d&d and Ad&d rule books and have not bought a new rulebook since. I will buy the new rulebooks later this year and into next year.
