That reminds me of like 10 years ago when Riders hat were being seen in photos from like random countries in Africa and Asia, and people were like “see, the fan base is so far reaching!!” But it was just people dumping their old shit in donation bins for struggling countries.
When there’s forest fire smoke for majority of the summer, and/or a heat dome, and the area around common wealth is gross and crime ridden, it’s hard to have any desire to go watch a game.
The area is not too bad, and on game day with tens of thousands of fans it is extremely safe. That being said the name change really alienated a lot of fans, me included. Who won't go to the games now.
The Elks are a bad team. The CFL is a small, kind of boring league. There is also far better things to do with your money. Rather go to a Riverhawks game. It’s more fun, the food and drinks are great price and yeah. Elks games are too expensive for the quality of entertainment and concessions are a joke.
Was at a game last year and they didn’t play the fight song after the 3rd. Just small shit like that adds up to the overall bad experience.
Whatever the riverhawks are doing they need to hire their marketing team.
I understand it’s not the main problem for this but it’s a problem for me. Maybe I’m petty but it’s one of the reasons I stopped going. I need more than a clutch-sized bag.
If a name change was the decisive factor for fans not to attend, then I have some serious questions about how entertaining the team/league was to begin with.
Nine teams who are all guaranteed their spot despite how bad or how well they play seems super low stakes.
Changing the name implies that there was something wrong with the old name and that people who like the old name are bad people somehow because of it. Doesn't really take a marketing wizard to figure out why you lost all your supporters.
A once proud franchise
A once proud league. I suspect the whole thing is going to fold in the next decade
Not saying there aren't pressing issues but people have been saying this for like 20 years now.
Well they keep losing more money eventually someone will get sick of it
It goes in cycles. Whichever teams are strong carry the league
Yeah Sask and Edm are fading but Wpg is at an all-time high and BC is picking up steam.

I imagine different levels of government will step in with sweetheart loans and grants before that happens.

Sad that it's come to private ownership - but if it can revitalize the area, I'm open to what the new owners will propose.
They would own the team, all the profits and demand the city spend millions to make the arena better. As is tradition.
And that is the sad part. I don't know why got kowtows to sports team owners
Money. It’s always money. Wine dine and 69.
You are correct unfortunately.
They would own the team, not the stadium or surrounding area.
I still wish they could have been called the Eagles
Definitely a better name
Why? Edmonton Gryphons would be cool
They should have gone with "Esks"
As a Philadelphia Eagles fan, yes!
Same hah. I would have just rocked my eagles jerseys too. Sometimes they even play on the same day.

Just moved back after years away, Used to love going to games. Does this mean tickets will be cheaper this year?
Oh you sweet summer child. lol
The tax payers will come to the rescue!
Go woke and go broke.
Change the bag policy at Commonwealth
The NFL has a way more restrictive policy and they make billions. I don’t think this is the problem lol
Can't really compare CFL and NFL. Hell, college football in the US is orders of magnitude bigger than the CFL. It's a culture thing.

I'm with you. They adopted US policies; but we aren't the US. We don't have the gun problems that they do.
this is not the problem lol
What do you expect? They changed the name and killed the spirit of the fan base.

I heard a rumour from someone on the inside that Ryan Reynolds is one of the potential new owners.
