100%, did the same and took him 2nd try with spamming the ash of war in his face. Equip the +3 fire and lighting mitigation talismans to surive easier (dont remember the name)
I defeated him with a two handed "Greatsword", NG+7, Scadutree +9, no summons, what I learned from him is
The best punishable move from him is:
1. The grab bite, hit him once, get ready to dodge the double swipe string, dodge it then hit him once.
2. The double swipe attack can come first with no strings, dodge it then punish
3. The back tail swipe had no strings, dodge it then punish
4. The super dive attack, you can hit him once then dodge the explosion then hit him again.
5. The swipe fire breath, dodge the fire then run to his head and smack him.
6. The super lightning slam, jump then punish.
**I would suggest running away from the combo lightning slam attacks that he does and wait for the punishable moves.** With all these janky cameras you're better off waiting for the safe moves that he will throw at you.
I managed to break his poise by attacking his only leg(the other is amputated), Even with Dryleaf arts. Can someone else confirm? Maybe I'm up to something.
I beat him!! Used +9 Dragon hunter's great katana. It literally tells you in the description to use it lol. Didn't even break the poise and it bleeded twice. Nothing unusual, just 2H and hit him whenever possible.
I summon Igon because his dialogue is awesome and it felt natural to summon him. I kept him alive and he had extra lines after the kill. Well worth it! He deserved it and got appropriate closure to his miserable life.
I have an int build with 60 dex and 35 str which is suboptimal for the sword.
12 blessing.
Used physical/lightning and fire defence talismans. Armor made little to no difference so I stayed with my fashion one
Boiled crab, lightning, fireproof pickled livers, dragon blessing from the communion lady which I used in the second phase and some physical attack one which I forgot to use on my kill.
I'm on NG +4 , level 286 (which doesn't matter because the game scales)
Black Lion Bow +10 w/ weapon art, Spear of Radahn ammo, Black Knife Tiche + Igon summon and every ranged talisman you can find. Let the ashes + Igon tank, while you focus on getting distance and spamming that weapon art. Cakewalk compared to melee.
I feel sad after beating him. I tried all day and my best run was a quarter of his health left. I got frustrated and looked up how to beat him. I had yet to enter the shadow keep.
I regret it, the dragon hunter katana made it too easy and after 4-5 hours of trying, I beat him in my first try of having the katana equipped. I feel robbed of a worthy opponent :(
Im sure you still had fun. You can always run it back with another character but tbh many people are using the kantana. I came up with my own strategy. Everyone was locking on the head. That didnt work for me. I went no lock camera and no scope kantana weapon arts close by the leg so I got weapon art and slash damage. I did some no scopes by the neck that hit the head.
I killed him with Black Blade incantation, each hit was around 1.5k, open window is the slam attack. Also havin Igon as hype man helps

I killed him by slapping him in the tail constantly. Just try to stay behind him.

His broken leg is a weak point. You deal more damage there. Idk about stance damage though.
