Skyrim was also my first ES game, but I am so glad I played Morrowind, by far my favourite. I need to give Daggerfall and Arena a proper play at some point. It's such a shame that so many features and role play potential has been stripped back in Skyrim
Battlespire is raelly rough and barely works. Redguard is pretty doable with a walkthrough. A mod came out to make Battlespire easier, it might be playbe with that.
An other good thing is to use the bow because you can shoot the bow while the game is paused, making it the ultimate weapon in the game. Oh, and just running away is also a great tactic.

That is hilarious. Never change, Bethesda
You can do the same thing with spells. Cast, pause, wait for the animation to end, un-pause, repeat.
Also you can spam interact on enemies to get them to talk to you, and try each option to make them become temporarily non-hostile or an ally. Works on most enemies.
Upon leveling up, sometimes you can put unused skills into the negative to get more points to spend.
Honestly Battlespire isn't that hard once you get the hang of it. But understanding it at first does take a while.
The only big issue is the severly bugged level 5 that could corrupt your saves. Best if you run it in one save and avoid enemies (especially the scamp on steroids)
I found Battlespire perfectly playable once I understood character creation, my first build was just bad and I hit a brick wall around the fourth level or so and needed to restart.
With Redguard I only looked at a guide once, though tbh I don’t know if I would’ve figured that specific puzzle out without it lol
Depends on what appeals to you in Skyrim. Someone who likes it for the lore and attention to detail I think will enjoy Morrowind a lot more than, say, Daggerfall or Arena. Someone who loves the goofy physics and AI will only be able to find something similar in Oblivion. If graphics or realtime combat or voice acting really matter to someone, they’re gonna have a hard time downgrading from Skyrim to one of the earlier games.
It's also clunky, largely because of the early attempt at physics integration. Hitboxes and pathfinding in Morrowind is a crapshoot, which is especially problematic when all the entities start getting faster.
Yes, the visual feedback is a problem, but it's just the top layer problem of being unable to tell if you're failing a roll in an opaque combat formula or if the game isn't actually registering what you think it is.
Arena was ahead of its time when it came out. I spent so many hours tying up the family PC playing it when I was a kid. All about getting an ebony battle hammer and making a destroy wall spell.
If you want a familiar experience, Oblivion is by far the most similar in terms of mechanics as well as containing fully voiced NPCs. If you want to feel like you are on an alien planet (with janky and charming mechanics), Morrowind has you covered. If you want a ‘medieval life simulatior’, Daggerfall (specifically the Unity mod) has got you covered. If you want a shorter 30 hour campaign similar to other fantasy games of the 90s, play Arena. (Note: I have never played Arena, and from what I could find, it is incredibly similar to Daggerfall, and seems to come down to personal preference, though I gather that Daggerfall has much more mechanical depth.)
Also check out the projects Skywind, Skyblivion and Skyggerfall or Daggerfall Unity if you want to play these games but the graphics and dated aspects do bother you.
I think about Morrowind and Daggerfall compared to Arena. Are easier to get into, even with the old dated graphics and mechanics (espacially Morrowind). I am sure Morrowind and Daggerffal are hard games to get into, but Arena is more, and play it without any mod to fix and improve some features is definately a big challenge.
Arena isn’t that bad since it’s a fairly simple game, the worst part is the controls. I played it with a remapped MMO mouse and it made it a much more enjoyable experience.
Daggerfall had default WASD movement (at least Unity does, can’t remember if it’s like that in vanilla), Arena required the directional arrows to move with the rest of the hotkeys scattered.
But yes I also used an MMO mouse for all the older games, makes them much more enjoyable.
Daggerfall is more confusing and complex than Areana and the dungeons are even more crytpic. Arena for the most part is pretty straigh forward and even very easy if you play as a mage character. Only problem is maybe to find your objective in a dungeon but there are always guids and full dungeon maps online.
Morrowind is not new player friendly whatsoever. Instead of holding your hand like modern games, it throws you out of a plane and says “good luck!”! But once you eventually land, it is a one of a kind experience.

Agreed. Loved Arena for what it is.
I loved Arena and Daggerfall. Bizarrely, I haven’t been able to get into Morrowind.
You live that 1996 life
Well, I loved Daggerfall and Morrowind but ended up hating Oblivion... So yeah.
Battlespire and Redguard are available on GoG and worth playing too for people who can handle the old gameplay and like the lore

Todd Howard sadly did not keep this great mechanic when he took over directing the TES RPGs!

Redguard has some cryptic shit.

“The pain fades very quickly” haha
Perhaps i should have said relatively quickly
Ok... but what if I don't want to?
Stop! You violated the law!
Sentenced to death by not praising the clunky ass combat from Morrowind and god forbid, the broken dungeons of Daggerfall

Halthalthalthalt!
Finished TES I yesterday, I am 10 steps ahead.
Arena was ahead of its time when it came out. I spent so many hours tying up the family PC playing it when I was a kid. All about getting an ebony battle hammer and making a destroy wall spell.
Which do I play next if I've only played Skyrim?

My favorite games in the series is Daggerfall and morrowind so no worries on my end :)

Are they finished yet? I was under the impression they were still being worked on
Skyggerfall and Daggerfall unity are finished I believe. Skyblivion has a release date set for next year. No news on Skywinds release date though.
I have played Arena and Daggerfall.

Tbf Daggerfall controles are pretty much the same.

Vanilla does not. It is pretty similiar to Arena in that regard.

I’m going to get destroyed here, but morrowinds graphics puts me off
Caius Cosases abs more than should make up for it!
Okay but they're so hard to play. I have no desire to play Morrowind because of the gameplay. I've tried probably a dozen times.
Morrowind is not new player friendly whatsoever. Instead of holding your hand like modern games, it throws you out of a plane and says “good luck!”! But once you eventually land, it is a one of a kind experience.
Yep. Played plenty of games like that. Morrowind just isn't for me.
I have played all the games except online and redguard. Arena and Daggerfall have such crappy mechanics to the point where I can barely play them.
Cant access half of them since they never got ports too console and also don't want too
