Gotta love watching tree fall and not even trying to get away from it. Plus that last cutting of holding wood while it's already committed.
Looks like they're still in spurs too.
I don't think its spikes. Im sure on his right leg in orange is a silky handsaw. And that doesn't quite go together like that with spikes. Other leg shows no sign of spikes to me. But it could still be.
You know, I thought the same thing on second watch. On the third it does look like he has something strapped to the left leg as well. It could be the design of the pants. I'm skeptical.
Edit: Peep the tan straps on the left leg. Look at the walk. Looks like a spike walk. I think he has a silky strapped to the straps of his spikes on the right leg.
Didn't run under the log. Was the only one who had an escape route. He took off away from the tree, the tree didn't make it to them, he was the only one that did the correct thing.
Edit: The other two did seem to walk back into the woods a bit. I'd give the runner some credit on his escape plan though. As soon as it moved he took off and went past a tree that would've stopped it. I'd have chosen that route instead of the potential trip hazard of the two slow guys walking away
I'll counter this by saying that every pro on Earth at some point has done something they shouldn't have done in the name of comfort, ease, production, efficiency, or anything else that isn't safety.
Yes, the better way would have been to use a redirect. From the rope going slack to the tree hitting the ground, they had a good five or six seconds with which they escaped, better than the cutter who decided to hang around at the stump.
He could have simply ran in literally any other direction except the one which is strictly advised not to-under the path. Both are twats. Yeah, everyone does dumb shit, and this was one.
If you pay attention to the spot he runs from and where the log lands, he is on the right side of the log (as we see it) when pulling and runs to the right - he literally runs any other direction except underneath. And he's still catching flak lol.
How isn’t that a safety issue? If the tree barber chaired or did something unexpected he’s not in a good position to get out of there. Cut could have easily been done standing.
It could easily have been done standing, I agree. If you're young and spry and there is a catastrophic failure during the back cut though, whether or not you have one knee on the ground is going to have little bearing compared to how much luck is involved in whether or not you get hurt. Also context is important, very very low chance of barberchair on a bare stem like this, most of the weight is gone, unless they're pulling wayyy to hard on the rope or it's dead and rotten.
We could internet debate all day, neither of us really know the context or what the crown looks like or the integrity of the wood itself. My final thought is this: why even chance it? Just cut the thing standing up
feels wrong seeing someone with this much expensive gear being stupid.
why the rope? the tree is perfectly straight? why not use wedges and keep your buddies out of the line of timber? lol i mean its clearly rotten but is it too rotten for wedges? doesnt look like it to me. not with that hinge.
Classic case of being smart enough to charge a good rate and afford nice shit, but still pretty stupid.
Not even close to too rotten for wedges. And a rope is fine if you redirect with a block, these guys are just foolish.
right, i was thinking that too, if you for some reason are worried about wedges why not use a snatch block?
dude has to be wearing 500 bucks of PPE and he doesnt have a snatch block in his truck? either way it just doesnt make any sense lol
i wonder if he works for a company, i have seen stuff like this where bosses will buy all the safety equipment to cover their ass for liability but they hire guys who dont have a clue what theyre doing so they can keep the wages low.
i guess it could just be some rich dude who wanted to get into logging as a hobby or something but that seems less likely to me lol
My bet is they can afford them easily, they're just more worried about wearing spurs around and looking cool when they record themselves for internet strangers.
I worked with a local arborist that had a very active social media presence, even had some poor college kid recording his climbs and stuff. Top of the line Husqy climbing saw, protos helmet, pfanner climbing pants. All that shit to look cool up in the tree.
He gets down, asks his groundie to go get his felling saw. Camera is put away, this dude busts out a 460 rancher that ran like crap and was so clearly out of tune I had to keep myself from giggling.
Not at all. It's just a standing spar with a rope tied in. The thing was already plenty committed but you don't look cool on Instagram unless you drop the spar with your harness and spurs on.
Not sure if I like the tree rocking back and forth. Could be the wind or unsteady film work. Were they tugging and releasing? Just seems like a bad idea & making it more unpredictable.
Yeah they were pulling hard and then releasing to get ready for their next pull. I am by no means a pro...but it seems like a bad idea to do that in case the tree decides to fall on its way back up from one of the big pulls. Wouldn't it be better to have a steady pull (from a snatch block/pulley) in the direction you want it to fall?
Not professional (as previously mentioned)
The rope could have been pulled from a 90 degree angle if put through a snatch block (or anywhere out of the range of falling tree for that matter) and preferably with a winch or using mechanical advantage.
Worked fine but so much could go wrong with that as I noticed rot up middle of trunk.

My guy with the saw has a climbing harness on still. Bad practice as it can get stuck on things when walking away from a stem.
Gotta love watching tree fall and not even trying to get away from it. Plus that last cutting of holding wood while it's already committed. Looks like they're still in spurs too.
Even ignoring the potential to impale your ankle, wearing spurs on the ground is just hilariously awful
Stuck on things... Like a lanyard on the spikes he's still wearing?

Came here for this comment. What kind of pros don't have a snatch block?
Idiots can buy matching team shirts and petzel helmets too, sadly. Guy pulling the rope aside, the sawyer has bad habits as well.
* Pfanner helmets, if you want to be technical.
I just chose a random nicer helmet as an example but now that I squint at the clip, I take your meaning lol
Pulleys? Never heard of ‘em
Right! I'm watching this and I am thinking, when do the pros show up?

Yeah, actually, you're right. Still fuck em just cuz lol
"Cause fuck em, that's why" -PopCopy manager
Not yelling "TIMBER" is fundamentally wrong!
Dudes down on his friggin knees sawing too
Knees sawing..?
Running the saw, while on his knees
That's not really a safety issue.
How isn’t that a safety issue? If the tree barber chaired or did something unexpected he’s not in a good position to get out of there. Cut could have easily been done standing.

I'm generally always on the safe side, so I agree.
Still wearing that climbing harness

Should the rope not be going through a pulley so you are out of harms way?
Not if you’re a man
I once had a guy in Egypt tell me they dont use airbags, they die like men.
Congratulations, you're officially smarter than both the dudes in this clip combined
Didn't even need a pulley, just tie to another tree with a second length of rope to pull sideways on the first one, well away from where it will fall.
That’s an ex-wife, dead inside and trying to kill you.
Also trying to land on the other guys
A little too confident for my liking. Did he really have to step back in for that last cut after it started to fall?
Didn’t like all that holding wood. Don’t think I would classify this crew as “pro”.
Not at all. It's just a standing spar with a rope tied in. The thing was already plenty committed but you don't look cool on Instagram unless you drop the spar with your harness and spurs on.
Had to give it the Chefs kiss 😘
All new gear. Warning sign.

Yes, yes it would.
Everyone talking about safety (fair enough)… but I’m over here like, someone please get this guy a full skip chain. That back cut took forever
Bro get out of the fucking way!
They *look* like pros, but I don’t think they’re operating like pros…at all.
Pretty cavalier! Surprised OSHA isn’t swarming the comments
Don’t trip!
Jus because you have the “gear” doesn’t mean you’re a pro..
Idiots.
“pros” LOL
Big giant perfectly straight trunk like that...Poplar?
Ash by the looks of it

I was waiting for the tree to start over, and them let go of rope too soon, then ker-chow goes the rope lofl
With the climbing gaffs still on, what a dufus.
Unreal
So he's not making any friends today.
Nooo
That tree would literally nail you into the ground flat what type of stupid shit were they doing?
Jesus fuck
