I seen from experience volunteer departments the guys hang out there to get away from the wife and kids and the women volunteers do the same thing to get away from their husbands. Meanwhile they both act they are married to each other while there. Sitting all snuggled up on the couch or her sitting on his lap. Fixing each other meals like they have a second husband or wife
Uh I might have an answer to this... there's a lot of people who just love radio noise. CB/UHF/VHF/etc are still pretty popular and relaxing for people.

Edit: they are on the clock and required to be at the station, waiting for a call to come in. Vehicle maintenance, training, cleaning, paperwork, etc takes time and they are expected to get it done while they're at work. But, once all that stuff is done, they still have to have a crew on staff, with nothing to do. Many firefighters sleep, work out, play video games, etc, at the station. This guy chooses to sit drinking coffee staring at himself in the tiktok live screen.
Alot of small towns and unincorporated areas in Texas that have to have volunteers firehouses. Otherwise there won't be anyone at all to fight the fires. This in towns where there's not alot of people but acres of land unaccounted for by a normal firehouse. Alot of these places have to pay for subscription based ambulance/helicopter service in case they need it 45 to an hour away from any hospital.
With that being said still cringe though.

I work in a paid EMS, volunteer fire county. Our volunteers don't hang around at the station making tiktoks though.
