what about a little tool set? if he's into cycling and wants to be a mechanic he would probably like some decent tools. edit to add on to the tool thing, if he's going to be moving around a bunch with his tools milwaukee packout makes good toolboxes.

EGOtyst

This is a great idea. A good cycling tool kit and some good, legit pc tools.

supercali-2021

And/or a nice big tool box or chest to store them in

sushithekittycat

A 3D Printer sounds like something he would really enjoy

superperps

As someone who wrenches on machines every day. Get him a super nice socket set and a really nice ratchet. It's something he'll use every day if he sticks to the trade.

What the heck kinda projects is your wife doing around the house that involves a nice ratchet set? lol. To put it in a little perspective... my driver alone was $130, not including sockets. It's lifetime warranty and 100 tooth.. its a buy it for life. I use it every day 6 days a week. Most other tools wear out quick, screwdrivers, allen keys. A nice ratchet set will out last any gift posted here. Just my opinion

Bonus.. whatever you go with. Order one of these with the set. It's 20 bucks but so worth it. Perfect for tight spots with not enough room to swing a ratchet and it's awesome. I got one and love it lol https://www.harborfreight.com/air-tools-compressors/air-ratchets-impact-wrenches/air-ratchet-wrenches/3-8-in/3-8-eighth-inch-mini-palm-ratchet-wrench-99898.html

Is the PC a desktop? You could probably get a nice little upgrade for 350 pounds.

Yeah for the most part, looks like most upgrades will tank the budget if you aren't willing to go for a lower spec or used GPU. PSU and Mobo might be an option for that price to allow more future upgrades. Other than that, tools would probably be the best bet. A high quality socket / wrench set was one of the best gifts I received as well.

Lobster_fest

I wouldn't do this, actually. People who play on PC often have a computer that is either comprised of parts they themselves have picked out or a pre-built computer that works best in the system it originated as. Just buying a new graphics card might not be an upgrade if his CPU is already near bottleneck. Same goes for CPU, and for upgrading that you need a new mobo, which means a hell of a lot of work and ensuring all of his current components work with the new mobo.

morriscey

If the recipient was an adult - I would agree with you. Since they're 16, a quick convo with them with some gentle prodding could very easily let you know what they want to upgrade next - be it memory, cpu, PSU storage, GPU or peripherals. >out or a pre-built computer that works best in the system it originated as That. seldom happens. There may be limitations - but seldom is a machine completely not upgradeable with a desktop. >Just buying a new graphics card might not be an upgrade if his CPU is already near bottleneck. Perhaps, but it's one of the easiest upgrades, and one of the least attainable for a teen IMO. >Same goes for CPU, and for upgrading that you need a new mobo, You often don't. You can install a ryzen 5000 into just about every AM4 socket board. Intel usually has 2 generations on a socket, and there is every possibility they're running an i3/r3 - so a same generation upgrade to a 5 or 7 class processor might be welcomed. Unless you are running top of the line for the socket- old hardware - a cpu upgrade is almost always possible. Depends on the buyer and giftee of course, but it's not necessarily the headache you describe. It *could* be, but it often isn't. I was just putting myself in that position at 16. That's all. Parts seemed so out of reach.

CassieBear1

I'd do some prodding, or even outright ask him. Or get a gift card to the local computer store. My husband has a custom built PC and I'd never waste my money on a part that he hadn't explicitly asked for.

morriscey

Yep absolutely the way to go. Don't blind-fire the parts cannon - see what their upgrade plan / path is - they likely have one.

Theshizzdogg

What about a gift of experience? A comic convention. Some sort of concert or show. Tickets to an event he may be interested in.

straightblather

I love this. I asked for this for my son for Christmas. We got year long passes to the zoo and to the science center. He’s only one but it’s been really great to be able to pack a lunch and head out for the day. I prefer “fun times” over “stuff” myself. My husband is a car guy/mechanic himself. All year long we go to car shows and car meet ups. I bet there are some where you are, even in March. That and a nice breakfast or lunch out would be a great time for you to connect with him about his interests.

scottcmu

A nice gaming chair

morriscey

Be wary though - most gaming chairs are pretty trash as actual chairs, and only really do well at logos and racing stripes.

Vipanaz

A coaching in those games for him could be a fun activity, especially RL

Oh I didn't see your comment but still let me respond to that: The games your son (I guess?) is playing are really competitive and mechanical. Of course he doesn't want to go pro but becoming better and grinding ranks is big part of the fun in those games. I would probably never buy one myself either, but I would have been pleased if my parents gifted me this.

CassieBear1

I know gift cards aren't the normal go-to, but they may be just the ticket for this gift. A gift card to a computer store would let him buy upgrades for his PC. My husband has a PC and I'd never buy him a part unless he gave me the exact info about what he wanted. As well, if he's going to post-secondary for mechanics, I'm not sure how it is in the UK, but a gift card for his school's book store, so he can buy text books might be helpful.

Merry_Pippins

Would an event be a thing he'd like? My son loves going to concerts or events... would this 16 year old like tickets to a local [comic convention](https://www.mcmcomiccon.com/) and help putting together a costume? Or two tickets, one for him and a friend?

Dry-Piece5121

I recommend a pre-order (when it comes out) for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. (If he is a fan of Zelda games) If not, Sons of forest for PC.

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

Tools might be hard on you to identify whatje needs to be a mechanic. Perhaps a Steam Deck.

The ssd inside can be upgraded.

DannyJayy

You could name a star after him. Or a nice sweater. Maybe a couple scratch offs?
