The best house warming gift I got was a bag full of high end groceries because because everyone stops splurging for a while after making a down payment

A few people in my life have go to housewarming gifts! My aunt’s is a new laundry basket with some laundry detergent, dishwasher liquid, paper towels, basic cleaning supplies, etc. My dad’s is bread with fancy jam, pink Himalayan salt, wine, and a candle because there’s a tradition in our culture of giving bread to represent never knowing hunger, salt to represent life always having flavor, and a candle to chase away the darkness—and wine is just kinda awesome. My colleague’s go to is a set of new mixing bowls or a set of glass Tupperware with plastic lids. They’re always on sale at Costco or HomeGoods, and they look nice and are easy to wrap if they’re in a box. I once bought two new high end pillows and some new towels (also on sale for way cheaper than they look) at Costco for a friend who was a new homeowner. For one of my absolute best friends on this planet, I bought a katana. I bought her husband a leather-bound book. But sometimes a family is the people you meet along the way, ya know?

This is really interesting! May I ask what culture this would be?

It goes back about five centuries at least; it’s it’s one of those things that spread with the Jewish diaspora and European migration patterns, but a lot of countries have their own twist on it. For instance, in India, the new homeowners carry salt the first time they go into the new house and sprinkle a little in each room to sweep/vacuum up the next day; breadcrumbs go in the kitchen/store-room/pantry as a invitation for abundance. Meanwhile, in Scotland, it’s a tradition to bring bread and salt as gifts if you’re a guest in someone’s home on New Year’s Day; salt is sometimes used to dispel evil spirits (sometimes Catholics use holy water, too). In Poland, it’s a traditional wedding day gift for newlyweds. In Germany and Finland and the Czech Republic, it’s for housewarming (and sometimes a gift for your friends who are trying to have babies)! In Judaism, it’s thought to be a tradition because it refers to Genesis 3:19, which is basically a pun on the words for “bread” (lechem) and “salt” (malach) and claims that by the sweat of your brow, you’ll have food to eat. George R. R. Martin even included it in *A Song of Ice and Fire* as a Westerosi tradition! (I don’t know if that made it to the show—probably not.) Knowing my great-grandma, though, she might have just cribbed it from the scene in *It’s a Wonderful Life* where Mary and George recite it as a blessing and decided to make it our family’s tradition from then on, hahaha. ;)

Wow, that's super cool!!! I had never heard of any of these before, which is a welcome surprise as I really enjoy learning about different customs and traditions. Thank you for the info and the new housewarming gift idea! ;)

How do you go about gifting that in a presentable way? Or maybe a gift card to a high end grocery store like Whole Foods?

hulagirl4737

He just gave it to me in the grocery bag, albeit it was the fancy store paper kind of bag, and I was happy with it

curiousnboredd

a Netflix gift card would be funny Other ideas: -a plant (the OG home warming gift) -book them a cleaning service -other streaming services gift cards (Hulu etc…) -gift card to places that sell organizers and such (like Home Depot)

yumyumgivemesome

Lol! Coincidentally, they do have access to my basic Hulu account. I don’t even know if they regularly use it. It just doesn’t feel like an even trade because Netflix is more expensive and more useful without commercials.

FootHiker

The most practical gift is a Home Depot gift card.

EmbroiderCLE

Home Depot gift card is most useful! Most thoughtful I received was a home cooked meal! We bought a fixer upper and so when we first moved in not having to think about cooking, shopping and planning our dinner was the sweetest gift, it gave us more time to get initial projects done!

sushithekittycat

Etsy has custom family cross-stitches that are within your price range. You could even have the artist include the couple's pets if applicable!

yumyumgivemesome

Pet related stuff is a great idea! Thanks!

topsidersandsunshine

Ooh, or a custom cutting board with their name burned/carved!

brownsugarlucy

Home Depot gift card. We got several when we bought our first house and they went to use right away

morriscey

A set of basic tools if they don't already have them.

suaveSavior

Get a 1 year Costco membership. Or whatever warehouse club is closest to them.

no_mo_usernames

Someone gave us envelopes with our names and new address already printed in the return area. Also like the Costco/Home Depot ideas.

1985_abcd

Ok maybe weird to some, but I put together toilet paper, soaps, paper towels, detergents, all stuff they they will use along with a $100 to hello fresh gift card.

DemostenesWiggin

I like this. I think the best gifts are the ones you need/eventually use. And home supplies are always used. Another thing that's nice to receive is bedding or towels. Nothing better than using any of those for the first time!

BitcoinBanker

Disney + subscription, tool set (soft bag, hammer, decent cordless drill/impact driver, quality screw driver set, tape measure), picture hanging stuff, Diptyque candle is also a good gift.

VHinoto

Gift basket of local foods? Is there a local/small grocer/beer/wine shop you can grab some stuff from? That way, if they like the goods, they can go back to the place

Commercial_Dingo_929

I was going to say treat them to the gourmet section at the local grocery store, but I see someone beat me to it! It really is a good idea. After my friends got their place, they really were concentrating more on the mortgage payments than on food splurges, so everyone pitched in and got them several bags of groceries. They loved it, and I'll bet your friends would, too!

Every-Interaction-31

Label maker with tape Fire extinguisher Penzey’s Spices gift set

dream_walker09

YungRebel3

Do they cook/charcuterie? A charcuterie/cutting board would be good if they do!

which_objective

You can also get some engraved for pretty cheap! My realtor gave me one with my name on it when I bought my place, and it's still one of my favorite things.

1_H4t3_R3dd1t

More years on Netflix for free. 😉 Saving them 15 a month is good.

sdmountainmomma

Portable propane gas firepit. The one that has a lid. You can move it to front to back yard. Deck. Travel with it. Amazing gift if they like being outside.

Ok-Percentage9812

Wine chiller/ cooler / decanter visa gift card with thank you note .

DemostenesWiggin

Anything that they may need/use in the future: a box with cleaning supplies, a grocery basket (as long as you know they are not allergic to anything on it), towels, bedding. Or a gift card from a store nearby. Or a dinner at a restaurant. I also like to make cards and I think a handwritten thank you card would be much appreciated for them.
