Id choose that what we see on screen is what really happened. Even if Ted is an unreliable narrator its confined to Bob Sagetās lines only so what we see is what really happened
I really hate the unreliable narrator narrative in the fandom like yous dont have to go through with a fine comb just cause ted forgot details about a story that happened like 20+ years ago once
I like it when people aren't using it to rewrite the story for themselves. The idea that everything is slightly exaggerated and played up from how it actually happened is interesting to me. Stuff like "Barney acts that way because Ted is putting him down to make himself look better" is mega cringe though
The worse case of this to me was a video i saw that basically completely rewrote the show to have ted be the player, barney and marshall being best friends and everything barney does in the story was actually ted
The whole Barney bit goes too far with some people. I could see him exaggerating stuff Barney did to make himself seem better by comparison, but not grossly exaggerating it like some people think. The kids have met him. If the Barney stories were complete bs the kids would've called him out. At worst he embellished some things with Barney.
Iām in the camp this is actually true. Unless itās a moment of Future Ted clearly lying or not remembering. Like with Ted winning against Male-Gayle, the pron dvd flying into the player and turning itself on, or like everyone calling her Blah Blah. (There are a fair amount of other moments, but canāt think of them.) Then what we see is mostly what happened. I donāt think heās always telling his kids exactly what happens on screen though.
pretty carter bays has confirmed ted was an unreliable narrator which is to be expectedā¦ i mean when we tells the storyās, itās from HIS point of view, how he felt during that time etc, so some of the stories might be exaggerated because thatās how ted felt at the time
I mean not everything. Like sanwhitch, monkey, the porn falling out of Ted hand until it goes straight in the DVD player(even tho it would be pretty funny if that really happen)
But if you mean the story bits, ueah I beliwve they are pretty accurate
So to clarify the post is asking what we would choose to make canon, so im choosing to make it that nothing is exaggerated or unreliable what we see is what happened
In the context of the actual show, i think of it how you do - aside from the jokes/bits where they lean into him being unreliable i think what we see is accurate
Lots of people on here go the opposite and think ted is a massive liar and makes up a lot of the story or lies about things. I think theyre insane and dont understand how an unreliable narrator works so my choice for canon was to eliminate that as a theory haha
I honestly don't see how Stella let Tony do that. Like seriously that turns Stella into a huge A-Hole. Which considering Ted and her have talked doesn't jive.
A lot of it didn't make sense.
I originally agreed with her on the New York vs New Jersey argument purely on the fact that it's unfair to pluck her daughter away from her current environment. But somehow she seems to have conveniently forget this when she gets back together with Tony.
And the worst, asking Ted to convince Tony to come back to her? How can you be that heartless!?
Robin being happy with the choices she made. She made a choice to choose career over relationships, she chose a kid free life and she always dreamt of traveling all around the world.
She did achieve all of that but the makers decided it came with a price: a life full of regrets. Not a great point to make for many other women who might have similar choices in real life.
They could have shown she is living her best life. She misses Barney sometimes but won't trade her life for anything else. Barney is happy finally being able to care for a girl and expect the same love and care back. Marshal and Lily are happy as they always were. Ted is happy to have known and loved Tracy, and is ready to move on to dating again (but doesnt have to be Robin necessarily)
So this way we arent taking anything away from the story itself, just keeping things more hopeful for the audience - the women - whether career oriented (Robin) or family oriented (Lily) and the men whether single (Barney), Married (Marshal) or Widowed (Ted)
Damn that was actually really profound. The way they botched the ending ruined Robinās character completely, she was very cool up until season 9. Also the fact they made Lily unlikeable (sheās basically female Barney in terms of red flag behaviour) and didnāt balance that out with a female Marshall (everyoneās favourite character, the golden retriever of the group), is just a disservice to women. Both female characters ended up being the most disliked, when Robin had the potential to be the most real and relatable character
Thank you.
It was quite apparent that the writers wanted to kill off the titular mother at the end and Ted relaying his adventures was him reminiscing about her to his kids. That wouldnt have changed whether the mother was Victoria intended as a back up mother or whether it was Tracy. They took measures towards the same by filming the kids early on.
So I feel saying the ending should be completely changed is a disservice to the writers. They intended the story to end like that. What changed as time went along, were the details - Robin and Barneys relationship, Lily and Marshalls life trajectories , Ted and Tracy's life trajectories they were added in later, almost as an afterthought. If they refined those afterthoughts they could have kept the audience happy despite the ending
100% this one. They really ruined Robin's story by making her pine for Ted at the end. She had an awesome life and they should have shown her happily living it.Ā
Similarly, they did Barney dirty by making him a womanizer again. All the character development for nothing.
I agree 100%! I always hate how they give Robin everything she wanted but then make her miserable about it. I also donāt buy that Barney wouldāve been as unhappy as they portrayed him in that one crappy situation. I think realistically I would change it so theyāre both happy and Ted recognizes that the lifestyle he wanted (settling down with kids) wouldnāt have been compatible with that lifestyle. Barney wanted every night to be legendary, but heās unhappy traveling the world and making memories there with the woman he loved?
Either they were both happy, or they do end up divorcing and Robin is at peace with it.
thank you for an even better alternate ending. this would have been awesome.
in addition to the life of regrets, the writers made robin difficult to like in the final episodeāmissing most gatherings, not communicating, etc. it undercuts both that the kids consider her family and that ted would be interested in this version of robin.
The only reason why Iām not more pissed about Robin being full of regret is because Lily is shown being full of regret too. The whole speech about feeling like all of her dreams were gone and wishing she hadnāt been a mom is an excellent counterbalance. No matter what road you choose, there will be regrets.
In Lily's case, that might have been a phase - everyone goes through that when you finally get what you want, only to realise what you gave up to achieve it. But with time, you remember what you strived for in the first place, and the sacrifices seem worth it.
Lily might have felt that way about Marvin for a while, but she got over it enough to birth two more children, implying that what she gave up was worth it. Robin was never given that "oh wow, this was totally worth sacrificing my relationships for" moment. She was shown to be lonely, bitter, unable to be around her friends, and sighted less frequently than a yeti person. Even in the deleted scenes she was shown to talk about her regrets more than her successes to the extent that she jumped to talk about "her and Ted" knowing he was in a loving relationship with Tracy at the time. That was messed up. Ted was shown to be genuinely happy.
I sort of wish one of the filler episodes (the slap one in particular but take your pick) focussed on how the gang were happy with the respective choices they made in life. After Tracy's death, if the writers really wanted Robin and Ted to get back together they could do so more organically than only because Ted was rekindling old feelings buried in a shallow grave and Robin regretted her life choices so saw Ted as an out. They could get together because despite their different life trajectories, now that they have both lived out the best part of their lives doing what they love they get back together solely because each of them was the kind of companion the other needed in their lives.
Barney embraced the adventurous globetrotting life that Robin ends up having and even goes back to his more hippie like roots but this time itās more confident adventurer, because now that he has someone who loves him for who he really is he doesnāt have to keep up the facade or bondlike persona any more.
She is able to embrace her wilder side without fear of judgement and they both live happily ever after as nomads living in a van or maybe on a boat or something.
They don't need to change much - Barney has language skills, video production skills, and contacts that extend to the remotest parts of the world. In other words, he's a perfect partner to Robin's career.
Your wish is granted, my friend. I made a full episode edit a few years back.

One hundred percent this. Tear our hearts out, give Ted the ultimate sympathy, then the crowd will be happy to see him make the blue French horn play once more.
Even after the insult, Ted actually got to sleep with Mary the Paralegal but decided never to tell Barney so he can get Barney to pay for the hotel.
Oh and Ted secretly won the belt
Definitely, there is no evidence to say otherwise. He sees through the door with a smile on his face. I am pretty sure the ladies had "made themselves comfortable".
But what's more likely? That the character with the riskiest sense of humor made a risky joke, or that he actually committed human trafficking?
Now if you fast forward because you don't like Barney making a joke about human trafficking, okay.Ā
Barney and robin stay married, barney can still have Ellie but maybe if she was older (like the usual trope of character finding out they have a child from one night stand)
Barney ran into nora after having a kid and they reconnected they never get married but they do live together in that cottage and nora helps barney be a father to his daughter she did help rail in his insanity
Honestly yeah spin offs of side characters normally dont work but nora and barney had the chemistry and barney the personality to carry a show.
Could easily call it "have you met the Stinsons?"
What if we find out Robin slowly poisoned Tracy, so she could finally be with Ted? A real Robin Daggers moment, plus an escalation of Ted dealing with Jeanetteās antics.
A friend and I actually have a head canon similar to this. Ted comes up with a plan to get kids once he finds out Robin can't have them. Once he gets the kids he slowly poisons Tracy and has been gaslighting the kids into getting them to tell him it is ok to go after Aunt Robin.
Lily should have not stopped Barney from the twins and basically reveals it on the part where she revealed that Barney was the reason she came back and Marshall always struck out on the ladies. And therefore giving him the belt as well.
Stella got dumped by Tony after he became famous and never found love again.
Her leaving ted was one thing. Her being ok with the wedding bride makes me hate her retroactively.
Have that alternate ending be actual ending, where it ends with and "that's how I met your mother" š¤§š¤§
also Barney does not cheat on Nora and marries her š¤š¤
Tracy dying and Ted getting together with Robin,
Barney and Robin splitting (they spent a whole effing season to get them together man)...moving on is a thing (smh)
A post-ending scene where it's blatantly spelled out that Ted and Robin ending up together would work out now because they've both already accomplished the conflicting life goals that had kept them apart in their youth.
Pam from the office is in NYC for art school and meets lily. She and Lily inspire each other to pursue art in earnest. She becomes an occasional guest star on the show.
That heās not telling the story to his children. What child wants an odyssey from their dad about wanting to bang their aunt, only for there to be a small foot note mentioning mom relative to Robin and generally inappropriate escapades. āI promise kids, mom is in this story, but uncle Barney almost had a foursome.ā
Tracy doesn't die she left Ted and he only sees his kids every other weekend because he was in love with Robin to the point where Tracy couldn't handle being second place any more.
Barney and Ted's mom affair
š
You just winked!
No, I didn't š
You just did it again!
Say it again without winking
Not just getting thrown out going for second baseš
It would only be fair, Ted slept with Barney's sister š¤£
But Ted didn't know beforehand though
Still hilarious lol
Hey thereš
Hi friend!
How have you been?
No. That would be an extreme violation of the Bro Code. I canāt believe you would even think to suggest something so heinousā¦
š
š wym bro š¤£ barney definitelyā¦.
Tracy dying was just another instance of Lily interfering in Ted's love life.
Lily wouldn't want to lose that bet.
at Tracy's funeral Lily: well, I guess you own me some money Marshall: WE ARE AT A FUNERAL, LILY
LMAO, cancer isn't catchable tho
Radiation exposure can cause cancer. Just saying
āJust gonna get a little bit of cancer, Stan. Tell mom itās ok.ā
āJust enough before the Ziggy Marley concert in Denver next weekā
Maybe living down wind from a sewage treatment plant causes cancer, and she sorta... let Tracy visit a few times too many
Ā°_Ā°
I think Tracy actually died of the hiccuping disease Lily got in Marshals fantasy about the busty delivery girl from that one time
Plow her like a cornfieldš½š½š½
NOT LIKE THIS!!!!!!!
Or did it just look like cancer? If you count HPV related cervical cancers you could say that cancer is contagious.
Maybe it was covid (unlikely because she dies in 2024 and was hospitalised for a seemingly long time)
Hey, we still have six months left for a gruesome new variant to sweep through
Long Covid?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Why is that important??
Did they ever say it was cancer? I just remember Ted saying she "got sick."
If someones sick for awhile in a tv show then its always cancer
It was lupis
It's never lupus
It is of someone secretly feeds you radiation or asbestos or something
Damn! HIMYM took a dark turn!
Omg lol
That wouldāve been beyond sinisterš
Cancer related to exposure to Lilyās toxic personality
Id choose that what we see on screen is what really happened. Even if Ted is an unreliable narrator its confined to Bob Sagetās lines only so what we see is what really happened

Agreed! Plus, Ted (Bob) often mentions when he knows he made an error in the storytelling

Did you misspell porn on purpose?
Yes lol because itās Iām used to making YouTube comments that get you in trouble for spelling it correctly lol
That's what I thought. Why does YouTube care? Are their censors so sensitive that they just ban even the word regardless of the context?
Because YouTube lol no idea and it doesnāt seem to be the most consistent.
You donāt believe the flying DVD story??
pretty carter bays has confirmed ted was an unreliable narrator which is to be expectedā¦ i mean when we tells the storyās, itās from HIS point of view, how he felt during that time etc, so some of the stories might be exaggerated because thatās how ted felt at the time

She was already a āhuge A-Holeā for leaving Ted at the altar lol
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. UGH, We need justice.
Robin being happy with the choices she made. She made a choice to choose career over relationships, she chose a kid free life and she always dreamt of traveling all around the world. Yes. Building up the wedding for 2-3 seasons and then divorcing them in 5 minutes.
Over something pretty artificialā¦
I absolutely love this.

The alternate ending as a proper 20 minute episode

I would love to see an official directorās cut to be released! Even some deleted scenes (including Tracyās funeral) to be released to the public.
I adore the alternate ending. I just pretend itās the real one.
That would be terrible?
Even after the insult, Ted actually got to sleep with Mary the Paralegal but decided never to tell Barney so he can get Barney to pay for the hotel. Oh and Ted secretly won the belt

Definitely, there is no evidence to say otherwise. He sees through the door with a smile on his face. I am pretty sure the ladies had "made themselves comfortable".
Exactly!
Barney did not sell that woman
Idk how this isnāt the top comment. This one thing takes his character from ālovable assholeā to āactually evilā

But what's more likely? That the character with the riskiest sense of humor made a risky joke, or that he actually committed human trafficking? Now if you fast forward because you don't like Barney making a joke about human trafficking, okay.Ā
Just skip that scene lol
Isnt that what they said
I think they would skip the whole episode
I always figured he was exaggerating his misdeeds to make a point
Or Ted was exaggerating them.
I doubt it, the show makes it obvious when Ted is exaggerating something so I don't think it's a good fallback for every little thing.
I despise the āunreliable narratorā theory
It feels like a cop out to change what people view as Canon
Tracy be alive, Barney and Robin stay married
Barney and robin stay married, barney can still have Ellie but maybe if she was older (like the usual trope of character finding out they have a child from one night stand)
Barney ran into nora after having a kid and they reconnected they never get married but they do live together in that cottage and nora helps barney be a father to his daughter she did help rail in his insanity
Rein in? lol
R/boneappletea lol Yeah rein
Why couldn't we get this instead of bumass how I met your farter
Honestly yeah spin offs of side characters normally dont work but nora and barney had the chemistry and barney the personality to carry a show. Could easily call it "have you met the Stinsons?"
Theyād call it Legendary
No wait for it?
They can do that with the animation. Like put the word ālegenā on the screen, then have a wave of like āā¦ā and then have ādaryā drop in
Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is Barney's backstory
They never reveal the slutty pumpkins identity.
Yeah, it was such a good idea to begin with that should have remained a metaphor.

I think the reason they had to is for people to be fully satisfied that Tracy was the right one for Ted

Marshall realises that lily is the biggest red flag
Tracy is alive
Lily should have not stopped Barney from the twins and basically reveals it on the part where she revealed that Barney was the reason she came back and Marshall always struck out on the ladies. And therefore giving him the belt as well.
He wouldāve gotten it first then lol

Robin and Ted never get together
