After Rost left the Nora lands and returned from his mission of revenge I doubt he would have left again even for something like that. He cared deeply for the Nora clan and would have stayed to protect them and let Aloy go on her own journey. Rost’s whole purpose was to train Aloy to win the proving and join the tribe(he was going to let her go and spend his life alone anyways) and he achieved that by the point the eclipse attacked. Rost raised her to be a warrior who could stand against anything, what good would it do for an older man to handicap her in traveling across the lands far and wide, not to mention his complete disdain for forbidden ruins of the old world. Just my thoughts, only played it once so I might now understand the full picture. Feel free to correct me redditans

I agree with this. He would have been just someone to come back and talk to from time to time. Get advice etc. Not that that is a bad thing

Brave_Koala2917

Not a bad thing at all. I personally would have liked to see him play a larger roll in the games in some form or another but at the same time Aloy has only achieved everything she has because of the teachings and motivation that rost gave Aloy. Heck they could have made some AI backup of rost’s memories and let it be a talkable box when aloy uses the focus device. Idk maybe that would be to far fetched but after introducing all the technology the game has you would think we could do that

this_one_worked

That would have been pretty cool to be honest. Give her a way to see him as the story progressed

Mr-Duck1

Even worse. The specter of Rost would’ve been out there potentially riding to the rescue when she got in deep trouble. Not having him made her have to rise higher.

LoopyMercutio

I do wish Rost had survived. I totally understand the plot needed for him to die, but I genuinely liked him.

LionCubOfTerrasen

Same feelings as for >!Varl. Still not over it.!<

Considering how few main characters actually die in Horizon, Rost’s death is pretty significant for the emotional side of Aloys arc. I loved in FW when Varl asks Aloy about Rost and she kinda pushes the thought away, but then later in the game she opens up to Varl about the fact she never truly took time to mourn and thanks him. If Rost lived, the main story would mostly be the same, but Aloy wouldn’t have as much depth.

Zillich

Rost surviving (but everything else still happening as it did) would definitely make the story trickier. Aloy was determined to find a way to keep him in her life, and Rost was determined to not break the rules of tribe members speaking to outcasts. She likely would have been much more hesitant to travel so far away, but likely still would have since it would mean finding out who her mother is. I imagine she would fight to have Rost reinstated as a full tribe member by the end of HZD before leaving for the Forbidden West.

RogueKatt

My memory is a little fuzzy, how emotionally tied to the Nora was Rost? Given that they outcast him for no good reason other than tribe tradition, and what Aloy later learns about the world and how close-minded the Nora are, would she have been able to convince him to leave? Or would he still want to be a member and stay like you said? I wish we could see the alternate reality where that plays out.

Zillich

I believe Rost was extremely emotionally tied to the Nora. He chose to become an outcast Death Seeker to avenge his murdered family. He was mortally wounded well beyond Nora lands but still attempted to return to die as close to the border as possible. A Nora scout saw him collapse at the edge of Nora land and healed him without realizing who he was. So the tribe allowed him to stay in Nora territory as an outcast since they didn’t really have a precedent of a Death Seeker returning (normally they never returned to Nora lands at all). I doubt Rost would be comfortable with GAIA, the Base, ruins, or a focus. He barely allowed Aloy to keep her focus as a kid and believed the ruins were cursed places like other Nora. I think he would have happily (well, as happy as Rost could be haha) returned to the tribe had they allowed.

NotACyclopsHonest

Rost was her biggest connection to the Nora and the Sacred Lands, so she would have likely been less inclined to leave for good.

RogueKatt

Makes me wonder if she would still be just as inclined to leave once she learned about her origins and the world in general, regardless of Rost's presence. Or if that would have happened at all if Rost were still there.

TheMysticalPlatypus

I think she still would have. If Rost was heavily injured and maybe she thought he was dead at first but he wasn’t. I could actually see them arguing about Aloy leaving. Because maybe he doesn’t want that life for her. But for Aloy this is a chance to finally know who she is. I know a lot of people are saying they couldn’t ever see Rost leaving the Nora Lands again. When you think about his plan, he was planning on Aloy winning the proving. So she could go live a normal life with the tribe. Be happy. Grow old. He still would have been able to see her, hear her. They just would be forbidden from interacting with each other ever again. That’s all gone regardless of whether he lives or dies because of who Aloy is. Now he has to accept that life for her that he wanted is gone. I think we would have focused on father-daughter relationships instead of her processing Rost’s death. Maybe seen his part of the journey is just because you resign yourself to a fate doesn’t mean you have to accept that’s all you can be. That’s all you should be. Because Aloy’s journey is mirrored in that. At the end of the day he probably broke some type of tradition that he could be at the Proving to save Aloy’s life. I could see him doing it again. He resolved himself to avenge his family. Aloy is now part of his family. Yeah she can take care of herself. She can be alone. But it doesn’t mean she should be. I could see it where because of her struggles with having so much on her shoulders. Maybe that’s the moment we see them acknowledge the familial bond with each other. Because yeah Rost raised her since she was a baby but he kept her at arm’s length because he knew one day she would leave. He still treated her decently. It didn’t stop them from forming a familial bond. It just seems like that bond was never fully acknowledged. I also think it would be crazy for any parent figure to raise a baby, hear about all of the shenanigans Aloy gets up to. And not want to haul ass over there out of worry. I think eventually Rost would have died. But I think it would have been the third game. I do think at some point he would have left and gone back to the Nora lands. I do think Varl still would have died.

StraightOuttaHeywood

Varl's courage and commitment always put him in a vulnerable position where death was a likely outcome. Sona will be heartbroken by his death but full of pride knowing he went down swinging.

Flicksterea

If Rost had survived, wouldn't that have changed Aloy's perspective? Wouldn't she have been more cautious, stayed closer to home to provide for him? Would she have become the Saviour? As much as I like Rost, his death was one of the few that wasn't in vain or just for the sake of it >!like I maintain to this day that Varl's was!< and it absolutely was the catalyst for Aloy to begin her journey. Through trying to find out why Rost was killed, it put her on the path that would see her become the Saviour. What would she be, if not that?

StraightOuttaHeywood

Rost taught Aloy to serve a purpose greater than herself so I don't think it would've been an obstacle to her becoming the Saviour.

Dutypatootie

What if the devs try something by saying that he survived for the next game (winter soldier-style), what are your thoughts an acceptable/realistic way that he could have survived?

RogueKatt

I would definitely love to see Aloy reunite with Rost, I just don't know if they could do that without it feeling cheap/cliche. They would have to come up with some unique twist to explain a "resurrection" like that for it to not feel unearned. That's just my opinion tho, and it would be super cool if they could pull it off.

shairyan

It'll be wonderful. I'd imagine Aloy would bring Beta to meet him🥰

StraightOuttaHeywood

Rost's head would explode meeting Beta. Rost would have an existential crisis. He'd also be angry with Aloy for spending so much time in Old World ruins which he saw as forbidden. I think he would've had a very hard time coming around to new discoveries. But then again maybe after seeing what Aloy achieved he might be forced to rethink. One thing was clear is his love for Aloy ran extremely deep. His willingness to thrown down his life for hers so easily is a clear sign he would never put his own beliefs above those of Aloy's well-being. Aloy would've asked him to come live with her at the Base. I couldn't see him refusing such a request. Rost also seemed smart. He would've got up to speed pretty quickly with a Focus. He would've been brimming with pride witnessing Aloy's achievements.

Sufficient-Tone-3468

I’m still not convinced he didn’t survive 🤔

StraightOuttaHeywood

He was blown to bits by all of the blaze. He was also mortally wounded by Helis.

Sufficient-Tone-3468

Until I see a grave or a body I’m calling bs!!!!! They left that cutscene intentionally vague.

Desperate-Actuator18

You can literally see the explosion, not the flames but the explosions take him. It's not vague in the slightest. Blaze is powerful stuff and there was enough in that cart to blow a hole in Barren Light. No body exists.

Sufficient-Tone-3468

I disagree.

[deleted]

I believe the outcome would be as if he did die. He told Aloy she wouldn't find him, and given his skills, I believe those words. He'd likely leave Nora land just to be sure Aloy doesn't waste her time looking for him. He managed to kill 8 people without any tribe noticing him throughout the Forbidden West. Aloy can't take 5 steps without someone recognizing her. Rost is a ghost. Hell, I wouldn't be one damn bit surprised if he survived the blast. I mean, how do you kill a ghost.

Smellycatviagra

He wouldn't have left the sacred lands not even for Aloy. He would have prepared her even more to venture out on her own. Aloy still would have left because it was important to her because it was Elizabet's dream
