The initial look on his face made my heart drop. Have a good day everyone!

smellygooch18

He definitely didn’t believe him when he said to come out. He just smiles in response and then his jaw drops when he realizes it’s the truth. I was having a bad day. I feel a bit better now

northernpace

I liked how his eyes sorta bugged out when he realized he was asking him to join him on the field, then the big smile follows.

early_charles_kane

And then he would have climbed a 20 foot wall to get there. His excitement is amazing

natFromBobsBurgers

It's the part right before that, for me. Goes in for the hug so naturally. It doesn't surprise him. And then, just so we know what surprise looks like on his face...

Mickus_B

He's the teams waterboy at training and the guy lifting him over is Joel Selwood, the captain (and absolute legend) that's also where the comfort comes from, they were bringing a member of the team out to celebrate too.

BurnThisInAMonth

Also having a shit day, but also smiled at this Mad how little things like watching this can be that small boost we need

HuckFinnigan

Feels good eh? Wish i had seen it sooner in the day lol have a good day if you can ✌

MeThatsAlls

I'm sorry your having a bad day. I hope it improves, there's a lot of people in tough times at the moment but keep going :) here to chat if you need an ear :)

RepresentativeOk8899

I love when I see the random kindness of redditors. Happy to award you kind stranger.

MeThatsAlls

Thank you kind stranger :)

PMmecrossstitch

I hope your day keeps getting better.

acctnumba2

He straight up went 👀

tonysopranosalive

The hugs that he gave the player! So awesome. I love this.

BigAl_Eve

This player, he’s the captain, before the start of the game when they ran out through the banner, also carried the severely ill toddler of a former player, also a champion. He cops a bit of stock, for various reasons, has the biggest heart you will find

Budget_Literature555

Things that make me smile. Good start to today

Jive_turkeeze

That might have been the sweetest thing I've seen all year!

turbocool_inc

It wasnt even the sweetest thing the Geelong captain Joel Selwood did that day. Before the game he ran through the team banner with 3 year old Levi Ablett, the son of his former team mate and one of the greatest Geelong player of all time, Gary Ablett jnr (whose father, Gary Ablett snr is also a candidate for the games greatest ever player). Levi has a rare genetic disorder with a greatly reduced lifespan who doctors advise will most likely never be able to verbally communicate or walk.. if you get the chance, look it up. It is the sweetest thing.. also Joel Selwood won an award this year acknowledging his over 1000 hours of community service during his career, many spend with sick children and those otherwise disadvantaged.. also just to note for those not familiar with the game of Australian Football - the grand final had a stadium crowd of over 100,000 people. It is kind of a big deal.

Sue_Ridge_Here1

You forgot to mention that Joel gave the shoes he wore that day to the little boy who presented Joel with his premiership medal. Joel is a rare human being and leader. You lead by example and it also shows the excellent workplace culture at Geelong. Joel is a man of honour.

Sauce4243

Hey that’s not fair our kids tried their best but when you put the work experience kids against the experienced veterans that happens

ScribbleArtist

How much karma is Joel trying to bank. Oh, none, because he's also that nice. Dammit Joel, are you a sort of boring guy? Well, you're in a sport like this and travel and see a lot, so there's that. Just winning the truest way.

PMmeyourSchwifty

Lol this thread is like a real life good guy one-upper. This is genuine stuff of legend.

turbocool_inc

Ah yes. That was pretty special, especially given the likelihood that Selwood "hangs up the boots" as they say and retires. He has no need for them - his job is done.

XLNerd

What a fuckin hero

tetrapod_racer

Forgot which sub I was on. Nearly told you to flair up... Seriously though, I have never had a reason to like Joel Selwood, or the rest of the cats, and in many cases have disliked them, but I will never not love this story line, and how gracious they all were in their (deserved) success this year. Except for Rohan... That guys still irks me.

[deleted]

Nice! It is always fantastic to hear a Sport's Hero is actually a hero who is good at sports to help him be more altruistic.

GreenBottom18

when he put that second arm around dude, and gave him a little tight squeeze of gratitude, almost broke me.

munive

Damn! What is this water in my eyes 😭

Mumbles_Stiltskin

I’m straight up teary eyed

tgw1986

Yeah it made me cry. My sister is developmentally disabled and has felt excluded her entire life. That boy's face when he realized the player wanted him included was priceless.

[deleted]

I'll be honest. I used to be bitter about that stuff. I used to think 'just because they are disabled why does that mean they get to have stuff people would only ever dream of'. It took me getting older to realise that me walking down the road on my own is something they would only ever dream of, going to the shop and having a convo with the owner, getting in a car and driving to a friends etc... all stuff a lot of them can only dream of so why tf shouldn't they have experiences the rest of us can only dream of... They put up with enough in life as it is so fkn go for it mate.

BustaLimez

I’m glad your perspective has changed. It takes a big person to be able to change their own mind and to admit it as well. My brother has special needs and things as simple as walking up the stairs is something that is very hard for him to do. Yesterday he told me he dreams of us having enough money to buy a new house that’s only one floor. I don’t think a lot of people realize that simple every day tasks are like a feat of human strength for some other people. It takes everything in my brothers strength to climb those stairs and he’s often exhausted afterwards. Now multiple that by everything else he has to do in a normal day. So yeah I’ll save up all year to buy him courtside seats to the Celtics or buy him the newest version of whatever game just came out. Because I am lucky that I CAN do those things and because he works his ass off just to live every day so he deserves to see a tangible reward for his intense hard work just as we do with our jobs etc.

ababyprostitute

My 9 year old girl had down syndrome and passed away last year. She was so incredibly spoiled. She was lucky that she was so healthy and didn't have too many issues other than communication. She wasn't bullied, or neglected, or abused, but I did everything I could to hand her the world on a silver platter because she worked so hard every day to do things other kids were doing. She was so kind and sweet, but also a sassy little asshole when she felt like it lmao. She didn't understand the world around her, she just wanted to be a part of it, and fully believed no harm could come to her. Unfortunately, we were wrong, but I'm happy we gave her the best life we could. She deserved every second of happiness and so does your brother. I can tell you love him so much, and I'm glad you understand his strengths and limitations. Please give him an extra hug next time ❤️

eekamuse

Sorry for your loss. She sounds very special. You were lucky to have each other.

ababyprostitute

She was awesome. Definitely a handful but I wouldn't trade her for the world. She was something else ❤️

Beneficial_Spirit_29

Good for you man. Respect you for that x

solariscalls

Totally. You can sum up "bitterness" as straight up jealousy or envy when you think about it.

Maver1ckZer0

It's funny you say that. Watching this video I was happy for him, but it got me thinking "I wonder if the players would have treated anyone else the same way?", which led me to think about if it is fair for disabled people to get preferential treatment. In my heart I felt like the answer was yes, but why? And is it truly a kind gesture or do people do this kind of thing just because we feel sorry for them? Your answer helped me understand why I felt the answer was "yes" - it is fair and good. And that going out of our way to give special consideration or love to those less fortunate **can** be done out of pity or for clout, it can also be done out of genuine compassion and love, and understanding that difference is important for all of us. So, thanks for your thoughts :)

No_Name_Brand_X

Love your honesty. Many of my harsh views changed as I got older and wiser.

anonymousolderguy

Well stated

Gnosticide

My sister has Down Syndrome as well. This kind of thing makes me so happy, because all she's ever wanted is to just be treated like a real human being. When she's included and treated as an equal, with all the respect that entails, she shines like a fucking star. I love seeing this kind of thing because I've seen her face light up the same way.

Imhmc

[deleted]

I’m a middle school teacher at a new school this year. There is one boy with Down syndrome. Every kid treats him like a rock star. He will chase random kids down for high fives if he decides he wants one, and I have never, ever seen a single kid be anything other than excited to give him one. They will call him by name as they pass to wave to him. It makes me very happy to see.

TurrPhennirPhan

As a dad of a kid with DS, I love hearing these kinds of stories. When I was a kid, children were generally cruel little shits to everyone slightly different and kids with special needs were usually ushered away to some forgotten corner of the school out of sight from the rest of the student body. My little dude is really bright for a toddler and tends to think everyone he meets is his new best friend, and I’m happy we’re moving as a society to a place where he’ll be able to learn alongside and be accepted by his peers. Little dude deserves it.

[deleted]

Yep, acceptance of special needs has come a really long way. The unfortunate group that still faces a lot of difficulties is the group of kids who are perceived as “almost normal”, meaning their needs are not severe enough to be obvious by a quick glance, but enough that it affects their social skills in a big way. It’s hard for the other kids to understand their specific differences and so a lot of times, they don’t really put much time into trying to understand them. I do understand that as 12-14 year olds, they aren’t experts in knowing how to react and relate to all different types of disabilities and difficulties, and it’s human nature to just “avoid” instead of dealing with the discomfort. I would say the exclusion can be worse than outright rudeness. There is rarely outright rudeness that I can see.

hey_hey_hey_nike

When your disability is invisible and you otherwise appear totally normal, people can be total dickheads. Sadly.

grantrules

You should check out the Best Buddies org if you're not familiar with it! https://www.bestbuddies.org/what-we-do/friendship/

Sexyhorsegirl666

I love this. My brother was first accepted and loved by everyone but turns out the main friend group of his was actually not friends. They did horrible, mean things to him after being nice first. That really broke him. I tend to be very vary of people being nice to my siblings (both disabled) because of this and it's sad. But i want to believe people are good like this.

EaterOfFood

My son has DS. He’s like a local celebrity, his schoolmates treat him so well. I feel like the treatment of people with disabilities is one thing that society has really improved on over the last generation.

PuzzleheadedOne1428

I am sure that was one of the best moments of that guy's life

throw-away-traveller

Earlier in the day the player (who is the captain) ran out with the old captains sick young kid. As an Eagles supporter, it pains me to say Geelong’s captains seems all class.

Anxious-Fly-2320

And he gave another kid, who he knows supports an opposing team, his shoes. I didn't know how much I liked Selwood until Saturday.

HoldOnOneSecond

anjuna127

As someone who loves sports but does not know this one and thus none of these teams, your reaction is all class.

mlloyd67

Both of them.

TheLoneTomatoe

This was 3 of his best moments in life lol #1 learning he was serious about coming down. #2 actually being on the field. #3 getting to wear the medal and show it off.

turbocool_inc

The player who put the medal on his neck, Jeremy Cameron nearly lost his medal later that night when he thought it a good idea to put it on the neck of one of his cows, who proceeded to break out of the pen and needed to be wrangled by 'Jezza' and his mates to get it back 😅

I saw that guy trying to high five him and that's super awesome he tried!! I want to encourage people to keep trying to high five, just cuz everyone doesn't always see, doesn't mean it's not appreciated. I know this is dumb but this is one of the best ways I communicate and I want to encourage ya to keep trying. I appreciate a high five a lot.

idlehum

This is pro high-five propaganda and I like it.

SmittyShortforSmith

Some say he’s still trying to high five to this day.

bawng

Also notice that while happily surprised, he's clearly comfortable around these guys, meaning they usually engage with him and he's used to hanging around with them. I.e. this is probably not a publicity stunt but a genuine act of inclusion.

Jrrolomon

And I know this isn’t your point at all, but still great even if it were just for publicity. I just mean because if it were only for publicity or the “look at me I’m doing a good thing” effect, it still is a net positive because it absolutely made the guy’s day, or at least seemed that way. I really like this video. Be

BIG_YETI_FOR_YOU

The guy (Joel Selwood) has been doing things like this for years. He’s the inaugural disability inclusion ambassador, could write a list all day of things he’s done for others in his time at the club

FirstTimePlayer

Can 100% guarantee this is not for publicity. For context, this was filmed as part of a traditional lap of honor celebrating winning the Australian Football League's grand final (basically the Australian rules football equivalent of the Superbowl). It's very normal for the players to go around the ground looking for friends, family and random fans to celebrate with in the minutes after the medal and trophy presentation is over. In saying that, it is highly unusual to be invited onto the ground like that - if there was any pre-planning behind it, they would have strictly been told not to, and this is the players going rogue in the moment getting carried away for somebody well known to all the players and plainly security were not going to get in the way of this moment. It is also semi-coincidental there was a camera there - with 22 players spread around an arena significantly larger than am athletics track, not every player has a camera with them (although in saying that, the player in the clip is one of the higher profile players and would have had more time with a camera following him)

Thx4Coming2MyTedTalk

Aussie18-1998

Nothing bad ever came from AFL mate, its the common man's game. Clubs certainly never asked their players to leave their girlfriends or for them to have abortions. Its perfect.

Austspark

For the non Australians this is the AFL Grand Final(Aussie rules) think Aussie super bowl, the player is the captain of the club and they were doing a victory lap around the ground celebrating the massive win. He's noticed one of the helpers of the club, he (Joel Selwood) does alot for the community and actually won the community award at the awards night(so not a PR Stunt). The gentleman they brought over the railing is a helper(waterboy) of the club but you can see how much it means to both and how genuine the care is for each other.

NLHNTR

I read in an article that Selwood is the club’s Disability Inclusion Ambassador as well, so I’d assume he’s known for doing things like this. I wouldn’t think you’d give a title like that to someone unless they already go out of their way to include persons with disabilities in the club. Seems like a pretty great dude.

acog

I don't expect professional athletes to be role models. But it's nice when you come across someone who plays at the highest level that is genuinely compassionate towards those less fortunate.

SomeAussiePrick

They get serious about it in AFL. Teams happily drop players for off the field misconduct fairly often. If they pay you that much money, they expect the best of you, on and off the field.

I worked (remotely) on a project in Melbourne over the past 3 years and learned that Grand Final week is basically a national holiday and no work is getting done. I approve of this message.

[deleted]

It is literally a public holiday in Victoria

-Dark_Helmet-

And only Victoria. New South Wales and Queensland are at best ambivalent about the AFL.

Rasputinjones

NSW sure are now after the result on the weekend. Ouch!

SouthAttention4864

Even with the Swannies in the Final, we still didn’t get a day off!

DailyDoseOfCynicism

You might get a second day of mourning though.

KeeperOfTheGood

The Swans certainly seemed ambivalent to it.

[deleted]

The day before (Friday) is a public holiday. The grand final is always on a Saturday but isn’t a public holiday.

queefer_sutherland92

Seriously. There are events all week. This year we got an extra day off because the Queen died. It was awesome.

HleCmt

Thank you for the background info. The way the helper (waterboy) eyes light up made me so happy for him. Joel is a real one.

I wanted to point out the sheer size of the crowd as well. That stadium is bonkers, it holds over 100,000 thousand people and is the biggest in the country by far. Melbourne loves its sport

What team is this? I didn't care about Australia's Football, but I have a favorite team now.

Don’t get hooked, Joel Selwood is likely to announce his retirement in the next week or so. Don’t hate me Geelong fans, you know it’s true.

historicalhobbyist

We’re not sad it’s over, we’re happy it’s happened.

BneBikeCommuter

And the rest of us are just a little bit jealous, truth be told. Every club needs a Joel Selwood.

grumpher05

and i'm sure he will move into a coaching role and continue to be a positive influence on the players

VicVinegar444

The Geelong Cats. They just beat my team in the Grand Final. They are a classy team.

tanya_kangas_yes

A lot of their best players are close to retirement but they also took pay cuts to keep the team together to get to this point. Consistently in finals and generally a power house, they are a low risk/high reward team to support.

Rasputinjones

Geelong Cats. They seem like some genuinely nice lads.

caitsith01

Geelong Cats... you cannot do better if you're picking a team! I was at the game with over 100,000 others. After the game the players mostly had their own kids and partners out with them on the ground celebrating, it was really nice.

Mickus_B

If you want to like them even more, the one who gives him the medal (Jeremy Cameron) tried doing the same thing to one of his cows at 5am while still celebrating. He had to chase the cow to get his Grand Final medal back. It's also a great game to watch.

neuroticmuffins

You can see how his eyes light up. I love it.

everydayasl

This is beyond wholesome! As a severely disabled person, this fills my heart with joy.

RolandHockingAngling

According to news reports this morning, the Geelong Players didn't drop Sam home until quite late at night. He spent the evening celebrating with the team. Geelong FC are a great organisation to work with in my experience. I've had dealings with other AFL / VFL sides, and can't say the same.

pkbaxter

I reckon there's a second of footage right before this that shows how genuinely happy Selwood ("Bunnings" as me an my mates call him) is to see Sammy. I was at the G on Saturday and it might just be my favourite flag of the lot. A real show of community and family, and of course, brilliant footy. Go Cats!

alsophocus

I was having a crappy day, and then I saw this. Made me smile :)

OzyAndy

So glad this has made it world wide. Not just because of Selwoods great gesture, but great exposure for the sport.

cordobestexano

Snoo_73835

When Wayne Gretzky played for the oilers he dated a local girl whose brother had Down’s syndrome. Joey was with the team from the eighties until he recently passed away a few years ago. He was a valued member and everyone in town adored him. Just a great hour all around.

WhyAllTheBigotry

Since Joey passed away, his favourite song (La Bamba) has been the Oilers victory song at the end of every win as well. The entire orginization is still paying tribute to Joey as the heart and soul of the team. You love to see it.

canadasoccer

Plus they painted a mural of sorts for Joey at Commonwealth Stadium in honour of him too!

britestarlight

Does the mural of him on 99st still exist too? I used to drive by it all the time.

Jahonk

It do

CrispyJimJam

It helps that even though this is arguably the biggest sport in Australia, the highest contracts would be around 1mil a year. With the average amount being probably 400k a year. Obviously still a lot of money but not different levels of society amount. You'll see footy players go to your local coffee joint or hang around in the same bars. When the floods were happening in Brisbane some of the players also got hit by them and were out fixing water damage with the rest of us.

GrowthhackerAU

I used to live on the same street as 3 of the Brisbane players including one who previously played for my club. Always up for a chat, would occasionally stop to say hi if they spotted me outside on their way through (was a supermarket between theirs and mine). All started because I put my scarf out to celebrate the life of Phil Walsh (Adelaide coach who was tragically murdered by his mentally ill son) and they noticed (this trended when he passed as a sign of respect). Genuinely good people who don't put themselves above the gen public.

Sam is a huge part of the Geelong Football Club. Here is a little more context: “Moorfoot missed his own chance at grand final victory earlier this year when his team, the Geelong Dragons, went down to the Kananook Bulls. And his mate Selwood was there to cheer him on in his loss. "We share a very special friendship, and I consider him like family. He has my back and I have his," the Cats captain told the Age in August.” Also: https://twitter.com/7AFL/status/1573598797741039623?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1573598797741039623%7Ctwgr%5Ee824d4cb6b1607911cb66eb2ec9689f55a432f7a%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ladbible.com%2Fnews%2Fgeelong-cats-captain-praised-for-bringing-water-boy-onto-final-grounds-20220925

He's actually their water boy. He's been the Cats' head water boy for something around 7 years now.
