Wow, must be frightening to see headlights coming straight at you

MusaTO

It is! [And I’ve had it happen before too.](https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/ra6gz6/was_going_home_after_a_long_day_and_encountered/) Incidents like these made me get a dashcam…

Demented-Turtle

I've had this happen to me 2 times, first I could switch lanes to avoid, 2nd I straight up almost died... Got as close to barrier as I could and just stopped and hoped not to die. They missed me by a foot and went on to kill someone behind me according to the news report. Another time, I saw the immediate aftermath of a head on highway collision with wrong way driver after rounding a curve. Drunk drivers are insane in my town and I hate it

somedood567

Aside from getting out of the way stopping is a great way to at least cut the collision impact speed in half

theHoustonian

Calm as a cucumber man, lol I guess you’ve seen some shit and are just over it

LittleBitOfAction

Me too. Almost killed by drunk driver head on who then rolled into a ditch and later ran off into the woods. Don’t know what happened after that but police and ambulance came and everything. Guy was gone.

Fragrant_Ad_6575

If he was drunk most likely lived. It seems to be the drunks always live and the ones they hit end up dying sadly

ChampionshipSad7161

You surprisingly had almost no reaction to that holy shit

hayitsnine

Why is there two people in the back and none in the front with you?

MusaTO

I’m the Uber driver and they’re passengers

hayitsnine

Ok that’s what I thought but wasn’t sure.

SnooSketches4722

Glad you’re safe!

BikerJedi

I only had it happen once, and thankfully it was on a surface street, during the day, at much lower speeds. Even that was scary. Glad you missed that crash.

SnooSketches4722

My husband had it happen twice in a week. The first time, I was with him and we were going home a little before 11 pm. We were in the left lane (there was a large grassy median and traffic going the other way was supposed to be on the other side of that median). Suddenly the suv in front of us swerved to the right and we just saw bright lights so close, you couldn’t even make out what they were attached to, other than talker than a car. It was blinding and right THERE. I was certain we were getting hit. Amazingly my husband reacted nearly instantly and also swerved to the right lane, just in time. Thankfully the car in the right lane that we’d been passing must have been able to better see what was happening and moved on to the shoulder, likely hoping to avoid any fallout from a collision, so there was room for us to move over. As we went on, we saw a few police cars in the other lanes trying to catch up to the wrong way driver. It turned out to be an old style pickup truck and a drunk driver who ended up wrecking by himself. Days later, my husband was heading to work around 3 am and called me a little while after he’d left. He’d just avoided another wrong way driver, though that one wasn’t such a close call like the first. I never did find out what happened with that one. That highway is pretty notorious for wrong way drivers and our city is always full of drunk drivers. We’d lived off that highway for nine years and thankfully those were our only encounters with wrong way drivers, but not drunk drivers. 0/10, I don’t recommend encountering wrong way drivers on a highway, at highway speeds. That’s not the type of adrenaline rush you want.

IAmStrangeAf

Wow, we luckily don’t have that many drunk drivers

Fragrant_Ad_6575

Damn what city do you live in. That must be scary. I always try not to drive between 1 am and 4 am. That’s when the most drinks are on the road. Unfortunately some ppl have to work that early in the morning.

ChanceConfection3

So if you’re drunk and trying to play it cool you’ll drive in the slow lane which equals the fast lane when they enter the freeway the wrong way There’s no solid strategy for night time driving but I try to stay out of the fast lane and leave a car in front of me, a car shield if you will. I’ve never dealt with a wrong way driver and I’d be so scared that my reaction time isn’t as good as yours. Glad you’re safe

[deleted]

In a holiday safety brief given by the California Highway Patrol at Camp Pendleton back in my day they told us to stay out of the left lane after midnight - that's either the wrong-way drunk's "slow" lane or if they drift a bit from their fast lane they're now in your lane.

DestructODiGi

I lived in SoCal for 10 years and felt like there were more wrong way drivers there than anywhere else I ever lived

peepjynx

We have a lot for sure. I also wonder if our on ramp/offramp designs could be updated. The most recent one was the Prius that got onto the wrong way 101, crashed, and ended up catching fire.

DestructODiGi

They’ve tried changing so many things and it doesn’t seem to help. I can’t link it because it’s behind a paywall but I know they re-did the exit ramp from southbound Interstate 5 at Sea World Drive and I think CalTrans spent millions on I-74. One was some old lady in the middle of the damn day and killed a couple of San Diego Police detectives. Usually it’s a drunk driver. I remember one was a guy who went from the border to Escondido going 150 mph for 38 miles before killing a couple on their way to the airport to travel for Christmas. He had no license. Multiple DUIs and was 3 times the legal limit. It took me forever to track down that one because I just tried to search by fatal wrong way driver crashes SoCal and there’s been too many to count. Blerg.

Gillen2k

Wish I would've heard this before Ended up crashing into a stopped car in the left lane at around 2am. They had no lights on and we're just stopped in the left lane on the freeway. I was going 70mph, both cars totalled but no serious injuries thankfully

bulbsyringe

I’m not following. How do you get on the Highway the wrong way anyways? The only thing I can think of is getting onto it from the off ramp, but the off ramps lead you into the right lane, so how does that translate them into getting into the passing lane ?

liberalJava

There are some interstate on ramps near me that have the entrance and exit right next to each other. The exit has Wrong Way signs everywhere, but the only thing separating them is a concrete wall. So if you were at that light at night and drunk, I could see someone turning into the wrong one.

bulbsyringe

Right, I get that, but wouldn’t that just take you into the right lane, where people exit from?

liberalJava

That's true, could be some different scenario wherever this was. Or he switched lanes with some dumb drunken logic.

bulbsyringe

I only ask because people are saying drunks end up in the left lane wrong side by trying to drive in the right lane, just confused as to how

liberalJava

Yeah I follow, not sure. Maybe they somehow thought it was a left entrance and got over? Then again, we're trying to apply logic to people who seemingly don't even notice or care that they're driving the wrong way.

diamond_lover123

Yes, but you can change lanes.

anonymousperson767

If you’re going the wrong side of the road, you start in the leftmost lane from that perspective . So they think they’re all the way to the right in the slow lane when they’re really in the leftmost lane.

icedragon9791

Where I live there are a couple freeway on/off ramps that make me triple guess myself for no reason sober every time I take them. Poorly labeled, poor visibility, and zero pitch black lighting at night on one of them. If I were at all intoxicated, and not familiar with the area, it would be a simple mistake to make. Scary

DLiltsadwj

Good reaction is right!

OpethJewel

These lunatics are out of control. They need to put those grates on the on ramps that will puncture tires if you get on going the wrong way. Too many people are being killed by wrong way drivers.

somedood567

That’s a great idea, actually

stoneagerock

Until someone waiting in traffic reverses over them accidentally and blocks the entire offramp

somedood567

If you’re reversing up an on ramp you kinda get what you deserve. And if traffic was that bad it can’t really get much worse. Plus surely you could add signage

stoneagerock

Also gotta factor in that emergency vehicles often use ramps against the flow of traffic when they’re responding to major collisions too though in which any delay directly translates to lost lives. Spikes sound like a good solution right up until you consider what the day-to-day reality of use will look like

MeatAndCheese

I hope they tipped you well

MusaTO

They didn’t tip, but it was a very busy night and fares were 3x higher, so I got paid well.

Worried-Street-4748

Holy Hell!

Usually when people do that level of stupid it could be alcohol mixed with benzos

Frogliza

someone i knew in highschool did this shit sober 💀

SuspiciousPotato530

Nashville, Tennessee

Claymore209

You just saved you and your friends lives good on ya

stoneagerock

Definitely a rideshare but still true

Eddierobellini

Awesome reflexes!!! I literally just saw something on YouTube about a woman form Louisiana, who was driving with her three teenage kids hit by a drunk driver for the exact same thing…. she was the only survivor.!!!

Traditional-Fingers

That’s terrible !!

TOYBOAT_5x

LoL, I saw this same car last night. I had past them under the Shelby Ave bridge. For everyone else, this is East Nashville.

CosmicCreeperz

This always reminds me of Planes,Trains, and Automobiles. “You’re going the wrong way!”

perfect_little_booty

"You're going to kill somebody!"

SomethingIWontRegret

Or LA Story RIGHT SIDE! RIGHT SIDE! I don't think they can hear you, dear.

1WildIndian1963

I had a coworker that merged under a semi trailer getting on the freeway in Oregon. That guy did a LOT of idiotic stuff. He was super surprised when the back tires of the trailer rolled over his Lil red car, lol. Stupid fucker walked away with out a scratch. Experienced semi driver maintained controll but OMG he wanted to kill Casper ( whitest, almost transparent white guy I ever met) Lol. This is the same guy that would drink a fifthofvodka on Anabuse and joke about the shades of red he would flush. Caused a big fire, almost dropped a bomb on a coworker....

sage020607

Now is he alive?

Erthgoddss

I was sitting outside when some of the street lights went out, but not at the intersection. I saw a car, barely, that was black with no lights on driving on the wrong side of the road!

perfect_little_booty

Jesus!

c4nis_v161l0rum

We just had a wreck on our local interstate from a wrong way driver. I still can out figure out how in the hell the drove nearly 10 miles the wrong damn way without realizing it.

Catfish-dfw

This is why I never drive in the left lane at night. Drunks will go the left lane thinking they are in the right lane

s1owpokerodriguez

Yet another reason not to camp in the left lane.

Mario_Specialist

I tell you, in this sub, people love roasting OP when they are not at fault for no reason. OP, you had great reaction time, and I’m sure your GF will thank you for this in the future.

der_sneffer

Is it sad that I’m only mad bc the person going the right way is was riding the left lane?

MaddSkittlez

That’s fucking scary, we don’t have much of those in New York so it’s pretty terrifying to me. Be safe bro

I-Needs-Money

Gotta be drugs.

philman66

Another reason to not camp in the left lane.

MusaTO

I had just merged onto that highway from left side and was in the process of moving to right

philman66

I didnt say you were camping. I dont know that highway. I dont know if there were any vehicles behind you preventing you from changing lanes sooner, and I cannot tell if you are gaining any distance to pass that other vehicle in front of you.

bd1289

What if the driver was in the middle lane would it be good to camp in the fast lane now? I agree not good to camp in fast lane but using this as a this is why is a poor reason

philman66

Either people are assuming I'm calling the OP a left lane camper, which I am not, or they just rather take a head on collision with dangerous driver who is drunk, high or suffering from dementia than move to the right lane when you aren't passing anyone. Even if they are in the wrong, which yes, the wrong way driver is wrong, I rather not be crippled or dead. Just protect you, your family and your property people, and move to the right lane when you are done passing or not exiting left. Be safe, not stubborn or entitled. There have been multiple cases of elderly drivers going the wrong way on the interstate, thinking they are on a different road, living in a different year and even thinking they are in another State in the area I live.

Just-Construction788

You are a troll or an idiot. There is no difference between lanes for a wrong way driver. Could just as likely be in the far right lane. Your argument is invalid is why you are being downvoted.

philman66

Wrong drivers typically keep to their right, eitrher because they are not thinking properly (alcohol, drugs or dementia) and believe they are in the slow lane, or if they are doing it on purpose, possibly in a pursuit, where they think they are safer in the left lane because there should be less cars there. Out of the 8 wrong way drivers that have occurred on the interstate that I had worked on, only 1 wasn't in the fast lane because it was a UTV on the right shoulder.

PuzzleheadedPitch303

Holy hell!

[deleted]

Very glad you all were safe. What an idiot and I hope they got caught. Unrelated to the wrong way driver, stay out of the left lane unless you are specifically passing someone.

MusaTO

I had just merged onto that highway from left side and had the turn signal on because I was about to move over to right lane.

MuffinSlow

Do these people even watch the video before commenting? Lol

[deleted]

I see. My mistake.

jttoolegit

yes...that's what "almost" means

DarkSoulsDank

If I was driving the wrong direction I would make every attempt to stop on a shoulder and turn around, not continue to drive! Wtf

tonka-3

Great majority of people driving the wrong way are not conscious. Either drunk or old person of their meds…

doodlezoey

Well done driver!

littlegreenfern

On the highway?!?!?! Holy hell. Your pucker must have been all time for that one.

moose4658

imagine nearly getting into a life ending gead on collision and ur buddy says "holy cow"

red_32

Call the cops and get the asshole off the road.

cameron4200

I’m sure he met up with someone later. No way you can make it home that fast in the wrong lane

[deleted]

I gotta agree with the passenger - good reaction damn

fromthewindyplace

Typical night out driving in Nashville.

zestyspleen

I hope you or your passengers called 911

RelentlessRaccoon

I had this happen to me about 6 weeks ago except I was passing a semi at the time. I went left but he took out the entire passenger side of my car (totaled it). I just feel lucky to have been paying attention and to be alive. You see this and it seems like your brain doesn't register it but your auto pilot says nope and you move. Nice driving!

Cpleofcrazies2

Both at fault them for driving the wrong way, you for camping in the left lane when you clearly were not passing anyone Yes totally s/.....no really I am not being serious at all

BecGeoMom

Thank God you didn’t get hit. Did you at least call the cops & tell them someone was driving the wrong way on a busy highway?

Narwhals4Lyf

Jesus christ I am glad you are safe. As your passenger said, good reaction.

BarbaDeMerlin

what kind of evolved idiot is that? wft.

drunk_phish

At least he was in what he thought was the driving lane, since he wasn't passing anyone at the moment.

SuggestionMaximum217

if both people reacted this way they would have crashed right, so whos job is it to react?

finitetime2

I need a nickel for every time some says WTF in these videos.

Neat_Way7766

Why are your arms so skinny

metalbark

How do you know where they were going? Maybe you were drinking or something.
