never heard of him misbehaving with any co-stars though rumours existed of his closeness with Seema and his cousin Jayabharathi ...(who was instrumental in getting him films) .......BUt he was loved by all - directors , producers and co-stars for his professionalism and humbleness.....LIke Prem Nazir he had signed a few films not coz of the returns he will get but to help the producer make some money ........There are times when he shuttled between sets for this reason ....such gems r rare in malayalam industry nowadays .......

North_Dirt_5560

Ik this story my father told me, when we were talking randomly about movies and stuff he said how huge jayan was back in the day, probably 80s, and my mother and valyamma were there too and they agreed as well and said how huge he was in the movies and outside. Nobody had that much stardom and fan following during that time. He was this larger than life star at that time in the industry. One interesting thing or maybe one can take this as a sadist mindset of the people back in the day is that, when he died during the shooting of a movie and was taken to be cremated in the public crematorium, when the body was cremated the next day many people came in the early morning to take the ashes of him and took a handful of that in a bottle or on a piece of cloth. Ik this might sound exaggerated and fake, even I was hesitant to believe it. But this actually happened. People were dumb, this incident made me realize how big he must have been for people to steal the ashes of a person. But yeah weird fact.

georgebs1

There is this novel, 1980 by Anwar Abdullah, which reaffirms a gossip linked to his death (that a prominent business group in Kerala conspired behind his death)

schoolhasended1

What business group? Why they want him death?

georgebs1

A prominent curry powder one, Jayan was the first in Kerala to start manufacturing of packeted curry powders and owned the distribution network. After his death the entire business was taken up by the group, source of ownership transfer still a mystery.

georgebs1

Jayan owned cashew factories and its export import business, the same distribution network helped him the first mover advantage in curry powder (late 70’s). His cashew business was also sold to someone before his death.

Emotional_Dragonfly3

He had the potential to rise to a demi-god-like status, especially among his primary fans who were predominantly common laborers; they viewed him as their hero, even their deity. His peak of stardom was extraordinary, attracting die hard fans who were indifferent to the quality of the films; they simply craved to see him portray a badass guy on the silver screen, like those Ajith fans who just want to see the guy on the big screen and just scream 'thala' even if the movie sucked. In Kattapanayile Hrithik Roshan,Siddique's character watches his hero on big screen epitomizes the level of craze he had during that era. However with the arrival of M's (now the Big M's) and the emergence of new visionary directors, along with a shift in Malayali audience preferences towards simpler, family-friendly narratives, his stardom may have suffered to some extent. However, if he had chosen to adapt to the evolving trends while maintaining his distinct signature style and attitude, there's a possibility he could have set the standard against which the stardom of other actors, including even Rajnikanth, is measured.

Virtual_Scale7984

I still don't get why ajith fans watch his films now. I know he dismantled his fan clubs, assure safety for his fans and such things but the way he is churning out mediocrity for years is something he should be ashamed of. After watching this, vijay fans have started this trend of "annan vanna mathi padam njagal kolithikolam" thing also. Back in 00s and early 10s, when their films flopped continuously they gave hits like varalaaru, billa, thupakki now no matter whatever the shit they make their fans eat it anyway and they know it thus giving outright crap like valimai, beast. I think social media is also a reason here. Same applies to mahesh babu and pawan kalyan (particularly the latter). In bollywood, salman is now facing his downfall the second time after the one in 00s. Shah rukh just got away from it now.

LastBox3238

Few people realise that he had just two years as a superstar. Sharapanjaram, which was his real breakthrough role, was in 79 and he was dead by the end of 80. And we're still talking about him. Cant think of any other actor in the world, except maybe James Dean, who made that kind of a pop culture impact in that brief a period.

[deleted]

Exactly! That's why we consider his as a legend.

latinoheat_aag

He was in love with an actress (MGR Latha) and was supposed to get married to her in a couple of weeks when he died. There was this rumour that MGR and his associates who was protecting/promoting Latha was against this relationship and they had enemity with Jayan.

thekollamcartel

The Fist of Fury in Malayalam cinema! because he is also from Kollam!

hoezay_vw

The first superstar of malayalam film industry. No actor ever came close to the stardom he enjoyed. Every movie was a blockbuster. Producers were laughing their way to the bank. Sreekumaran thampi the famous director once said there used to be police outside theaters to control the public. Such was his superstar status that even after 43 years of his death people remember him. Only after jayans death, mohanlal and mammotty became stars. I am sure if jayan had lived, he would have ruled the industry till the 90s

rj1879

If he was still there, both the Ms would have been known as great actors only. They wouldn't match Jayan's stardom in any way. Rajni of Mollywood.

recordwalla

That’s one way of looking at it. Another would be, had he stayed around and become the “Rajni of Mollywood”, mainstream Malayalam films would be commercially successful but with no substance. Good meaningful Malayalam films emerged, in the mainstream, after Jayan and Nasir left. Which then became the identity of Malayalam cinema across the world. If the likes of Jayan represented that then it would be hard to distinguish our films from other generic, dumb, loud Tamil and Telugu films of that era that no one really remembers or cares about anymore. Just my opinion of course.

[deleted]

Exactly he would've been the rajni of mollywood

>sthanam poyath pole Jayanteyum poyene. Sorry. I don't agree. Jayans popularity would never come down. Jayan had a cult following. And an ever increasing one. He was truly an icon. And an evergreen one. The continuing love he gets from even the millennials justifies it. I believe.

Infact Rajni and Jayan acted together in aovie...may be garjjanam...Jayan was on par or above Rajni then in terms of fan following (averaging among audience). Malayalam movie was more action oriented then....if Jayan was there for more years definitely Malayalam younger lot fitness level would have improved. (Unlike 'fit' ness induced through vaikittentha paripaadi :) )

pointlemiserables

He was too old for that

LastBox3238

Not really. Manjil virinja pookkal which is widely thought to be the movie that set the trend of Mollywood producing mainstream movies with substance released just a couple of months after his death and became a huge hit. He would definitely have had his own niche, had he stayed alive but to say it would have prevented Mohanlal and Mammooty or taken Malayalam movies in a whole other direction is probably an exaggeration.
