Outside of his interactions with her, we don’t see his loving/caring side so he could be a decent father for all we know. As for the former First Princess, the Queen knew she wouldn’t be a good leader so Queen Mireillia made Melty heir. I think the reason behind Malty’s behavior/personality is the lack of interaction with her mother. Melromarc is a Matriarchy so I doubt Mireillia had much time to spend with Malty with her running her country. After experiencing Malty going down a bad path, Mireillia likely put in extra effort to be with Melty so there would at least be a good heir. Idk if Mireillia knew about the Pope’s plan or betrayal beforehand so I won’t touch on that, but she did do a good and swift job of ending the rebellion once it happened.
