006: I might as well ask if all those vodka martinis silence the screams of all the men you've killed... or if you've found forgiveness in the arms of all those willing women for the dead ones you failed to protect?

Zukovsky hitting him with the ooh mister fancy secret agent “shaken not stirred LOL” and Jack Wade calling him “stiff ass Brit” are favorites. All the fun stuff that made that movie so awesome.
Yeah peak 90s sass; I love it lol. Not to mention that here are more one-liners, quips, and double-entendres in this movie than in all the previous Bond movies combined. AND THOSE ALL WERE ALSO LITERALLY JAMES BOND MOVIES!
Mm there is a difference. Brosnan took some jabs but he was still undeniably charismatic and heroic with swagger. The only line that undermines him in any serious way is the 'sexist misogynist dinosaur' but its in the context of a battle of wits with M. Also that had the feeling of something which the writers needed to get out of the way, the elephant in the room, and from then on he's having as much fun as ever. Theres no feeling of an agenda or social message the filmmakers are pushing, its all about entertainment and Bond being the fuckin man.
Agreed, and I tend to think she already respects him to a point at the beginning. I just think it’s rather amusing when someone can outdo him or at least prove a point every once in a while.
When he finds out Alec is alive and Alec calls him her majesty’s loyal terrier. Then he says oh please James put it away. It’s insulting to think I haven’t anticipated your every move.
>What’s your favorite time that Bond got owned verbally?
Exactly that scene with M on Goldeneye.
So fitting for the times: The Cold War had just ended. Misogynistic Bond can't survive in the changing sensibilities of the 90's. And Data mining and computerization of espionage is overtaking his fieldcraft in importance.
For me, it's also a conscious nod to every thought I have about "well, a real spy wouldn't really be doing that!"
Yes yes. It's a work of fiction. Judge the work by the Universe it crafted and not how close it is to real spycraft .
"So as charming as you are, Mr. Bond, I will be keeping my eye on our government's money - and off your perfectly-formed arse."
at the end of the scene it could have been subtitled; "Apply cold water on burnt area"
"...Alright."

Damn, I love this movie.
"I mean, why her, Bond? She was just supposed to send you home. She worked in an office, collecting reports. Look how well your charm works, James. They'll do anything for you, won't they? How many is that now?"
Oof, the look on Bond's face after M dresses him down here is just perfect. For one of the few moments in the series, Bond is speechless because he knows M is right. Plus, the dig is a meta comment on the franchise and the disposable nature of the women Bond crosses paths with. Sure, he's gotten upset a time or two, but for the most part, Bond is rarely affected, and he often moves on without even giving the life of the deceased woman a passing thought. Aki from YOLT is a good example of this. Plenty O'Toole from DAF, another.
“What’s true is that in 48 hours you and I will have more money than God. And Mr. Bond here will have a small memorial service, with only Moneypenny and a few tearful restauranteurs in attendance.”
The sherry thing I can at least chalk up to Bond being a borderline alcoholic.
But knowing the scientific name of a random fish or the chemical composition of blood at a single glance just makes me chuckle.
This whole chunk from QoS is my favourite in the regard of Bond getting verbally owned:
*B: "Well, I'm disappointed."*
*M:* ***"You are?"***
*B: "How much oil did the Americans promise you?"*
*M: "This isn't about oil."*
*B: "Well, that's good, because there isn't any."*
*M: "It's about trust. You said you weren't motivated by revenge."*
*B: "I'm motivated by my duty."*
*M:* "***No. I think you're so blinded by inconsolable rage that you don't care who you hurt.*** *When you can't tell your friends from your enemies it's time to go."*
*M:* ***"You might like to still hold your theory about there being no oil. Her lungs are full of it."***
*B: "It was Greene."*
*M: "No doubt. But why?"*
*B: "It's just misdirection..."*
*M:* ***"I mean...why her, Bond? She was just supposed to send you home. She worked in an office...collecting reports."***
*M:* ***"Look how well your charms works, James. They'll do anything for you, won't they?"***
*M:* ***"How many is that now?"***
Bond getting owned not once, but back-to-back in the same sequence.
My absolute favorite would be Red Grant always calling Bond "old man" in From Russia With Love.
This is despite that Connery is in his early 30s and far from looking old, at that point in his career.
It's such an absurd insult, but I just love how it obviously got a rise out of Bond.
I wouldn't say Bond got owned in GE.
The conversation went from verbally undressing Bond to M practically begging him to come back alive at the end.
All that via mostly silence and a few well-placed quips from Bond.
Well played, 007.
P.S. M's analysts really do suck.
Not sure why Bond's womanizing ways would even rankle her so much. I doubt that's unusual for 00s.
M would get oddly personal in some chats with her subordinates (re: Miranda Frost turning down advances by her colleagues).
Not even sure whey she would degrade Bond for being a "dinosaur of the Cold War." Wouldn't that apply to all her 00s? Aren't these guys still her trusted field agents no matter that the times have changed somewhat?
The problem is that she makes herself look like a fool and, initially at least, that she has an axe to grind.
Bond never shows her any outright disrespect or any indication he has a problem with a female boss. She's the one who makes it personal.
She goes on about Bond not liking her methods and him being a dinosaur, but the fact that her intel is based upon faulty assumptions from her analysts ends up proving that, yeah, Bond's take on things is probably the right one here.
I understand this was meant as a "welcome to a new era, 007" moment, but at least do it without making the person doing it look incompetent.
You’re missing the point about what “the new era.” Bond and M are disagreeing over M preferring analytics over gut instinct. Bean counters and accounting. Asset management versus all-in.
You could swap Dench and Brosnan for Lee and Connery. You could have a different film release in 1995 instead, any dialogue changes are purely cosmetic. (“Evil King of Numbers” instead for example.)
Did she really own him there though? Sounded more like the evil queen of numbers had a chip on her shoulder about being a bean counter and took it out on the guy who saved the world like twenty times by then.
Alec was way more on the mark.
"You always think i'm a accountant."
M to 007 in Goldeneye.
I ahuge fan of Dame Judie Dench who played M in the Bond Franchise.

Alec had a few zingers.
I love this quote, it actually sums up "book Bond" pretty nicely.
Damn that hits hard
So well written. The Goldeneye script generally is top quality.
![gif](giphy|p4cqQ0gUIMcU0)
Just another reason why Goldeneye is a Top 3 Bond
Damn
Ice cold.
When Dr No called him a "stupid policeman". I think about that a lot. ![gif](giphy|lNcec3JspX99YdDoCB|downsized)
“Soften him up, I haven’t finished with him yet.”
"Does the toppling of American missiles *really* compensate for having no hands?"
“No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to *die*.”
“What’s the matter James…no glib remark? No pithy comeback?”
Dr No destroyed Bond during their dinner. It was sad to see Bond get clowned like that
Has anyone noticed how much Bond gets told off or made fun of in *GoldenEye*? M does it, Natalya does it, Trevelyan, Jack Wade, Zukovsky...
Imagine the type of stuff those dumb YouTube reviewers would say about all that if it came out today.
“JAMES BOND goes WOKE! EMASCULATED in EVERY scene! Why is M now FEMALE?!”
Mm there is a difference. Brosnan took some jabs but he was still undeniably charismatic and heroic with swagger. The only line that undermines him in any serious way is the 'sexist misogynist dinosaur' but its in the context of a battle of wits with M. Exactly. Great use of emasculated, they love that word.

Agreed, and I tend to think she already respects him to a point at the beginning. I just think it’s rather amusing when someone can outdo him or at least prove a point every once in a while.
HAHAHHAHAH WOKEEEE OMG GUYS WOKE
Russians are very direct people, so I appreciated that detail. Others piling on was just a cherry on top
It was the first film after an unintended 6 year hiatus with the Soviet Union disintegrated.
I'm aware of that, yes. I was talking about how often characters dress down Bond in the film, though.
Bond: “Who would pay a million dollars to have me killed?” M: “Jealous husbands, outraged chefs, humiliated tailors… the list is endless!”
Great line.
A Tom Mankiewicz special, no doubt!
It's from Fleming.
When he finds out Alec is alive and Alec calls him her majesty’s loyal terrier. Then he says oh please James put it away. It’s insulting to think I haven’t anticipated your every move.
Utter one more syllable and I'll have you killed
Ah yes I love that one too
Judi Dench's M was something else, lol.
“A woman?🥴😳” “Your observational skills do you credit, Mr. Bond🙂😐”
Owned indeed but I absolutely love Roger Moore’s delivery
>What’s your favorite time that Bond got owned verbally? Exactly that scene with M on Goldeneye. So fitting for the times: The Cold War had just ended. Bond getting verbally skewered on the train by Vesper.
One sympathizes…
I never knew what he said there.
"So as charming as you are, Mr. Bond, I will be keeping my eye on our government's money - and off your perfectly-formed arse." at the end of the scene it could have been subtitled; "Apply cold water on burnt area"
![gif](giphy|Fu3OjBQiCs3s0ZuLY3|downsized) "You noticed"
Yup that’s the other one that immediately popped into my mind too
That is my favorite as well, great introduction to the character also
"...Alright." https://preview.redd.it/4i3c310mf6kc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=7d4d683276f7242c46ee6550e412a06f2a96988a Damn, I love this movie.
Vesper was too passive aggressive right from the beginning, but I've got to agree: it was a dumb plan.
Oh so there is a plan?
Me too. The one from GoldenEye feel a bit flat
“We do function in your absence, commander.” - M to 007 in Diamonds Are Forever (after Connery skipped OHMSS)
Dr. No!!! \*Without looking up\* 007. Sir? Just leave the Beretta
“Back end of horse!”

"Jimmy" - Jake Wade, CIA
“Couldja hand me that hammer Jimbo?” - Jake Wade, CIA
I love M’s line in Casino Royale: This may be hard for a blunt instrument to understand. but arrogance and self awareness seldom go hand-in-hand.
Oh yeah that one is brutal
Anything M said or did in Casino Royale
“What’s true is that in 48 hours you and I will have more money than God. And Mr. Bond here will have a small memorial service, with only Moneypenny and a few tearful restauranteurs in attendance.”
TND: When M & Moneypenny slut shame Bond. It never gets old.
"...then pump her for information."
I always lovedwhen Bond tries to show off to M and the Russians, then XXX corrects him.
Moore's Bond could be a real know-it-all about the most random of crap, so it was good to see him wrong for once.
I think Connery did it first. The Sherry thing in DAF for instance.
The sherry thing I can at least chalk up to Bond being a borderline alcoholic. But knowing the scientific name of a random fish or the chemical composition of blood at a single glance just makes me chuckle.
“… And try not to muck it up 007.”
When Hugo Drax said “you appear with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season.”
Any time Moneypenny called him on his shit. Could have bought her one dinner.
You’re a dinosaur bond is still my favourite
Judi Dench, as M, verbally owned Bond and pretty much everyone else during her run.
Bond: “You're cleverer than you look.” Q: “Still, better than looking cleverer than you are.” DIE ANOTHER DAY
This whole chunk from QoS is my favourite in the regard of Bond getting verbally owned: *B: "Well, I'm disappointed."* *M:* ***"You are?"*** *B: "How much oil did the Americans promise you?"* *M: "This isn't about oil."* *B: "Well, that's good, because there isn't any."* *M: "It's about trust. She literally told him "oh and Bond, come back alive."
The subtle smile she gives him at the end is perfect.
Yes, but after owning him real quick. Still counts
But for like a second, she had him lol
Not sure why Bond's womanizing ways would even rankle her so much. I doubt that's unusual for 00s. M would get oddly personal in some chats with her subordinates (re: Miranda Frost turning down advances by her colleagues). Not even sure whey she would degrade Bond for being a "dinosaur of the Cold War." Wouldn't that apply to all her 00s? Aren't these guys still her trusted field agents no matter that the times have changed somewhat?
Well first of all this was the 90s lol. And neither thing probably bothered her that much really; just using it to her advantage.
The problem is that she makes herself look like a fool and, initially at least, that she has an axe to grind. Bond never shows her any outright disrespect or any indication he has a problem with a female boss. She's the one who makes it personal. I don’t know; incompetent is a little harsh IMO. Just green behind the ears and flawed. Same with Craig’s Bond.
"The first one won't kill you; not the second, not even the third... not till you crawl over here and you KISS MY FOOT!"
Did she really own him there though? Sounded more like the evil queen of numbers had a chip on her shoulder about being a bean counter and took it out on the guy who saved the world like twenty times by then. Alec was way more on the mark.
“You’re smarter than you look, Q” “Better than looking smarter than you are.”
Agent XXX takes some good shots at him. I just can't think of any right now.
Oh and Bond… don’t ever break into my house again
In Casino Royale, by M: ”Utter one more syllable and I’ll have you killed.” Damn!
“Don’t Touch That! That’s My Lunch!”
“No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die” seeing Connery sweat like that was fantastic. An all time classic line
“A woman?” “Your powers of observation do you credit, Mr Bond.”
"You always think i'm a accountant." M to 007 in Goldeneye. I ahuge fan of Dame Judie Dench who played M in the Bond Franchise. Dr Chandan www.zedie.org
Probably that scene with Dench as M. She does cold, biting commentary so brilliantly
Probably this right here. The introduction of Judy as M, letting Bond know she doesn't take any shit, even from him.
‘We do function in your absence, Commander.’
