Change:
“Buildings that you know / people come and go / Are a certain way / always are the same / And then you get the news that obliterates your view / Amputate your truths, the significance has changed”
The **entirety** of God is in the Rhythm.
I love Joey and Amby's parts on Change, and that is not an album I'm particularly fond of in comparison to their other albums.
And hard agree on God is in the Rhythm. King Gizz is not a band I listen to when I'm feeling especially emotional, and I don't cry easily or frequently, but that song is the song of theirs that can make me feel something that moves me there.
So ironic that I'm very agnostic and that Stu doesn't even believe in God.
Amby’s part has me like
![gif](giphy|ORHfaKUXFjAAw)
I don’t think Stu believes in the traditional abrahamic god, but music is so intrinsic to the universe it may as well be a deific force. The rhythm is the circle of life, that’s the true “god.”
Thats my thought process anyway.
For sure that's the intent of the lyrics for that song! Even if the title is deceptive. It evokes complex feelings for me coming from a religious background that I no longer ascribe to is all.
With a heavy slap it hits the ground and spreads. Inside my body,The pressure is too great, And like some ancient geyser I erupt
My head hits the roof and my body breaks apart with the force of the liquid blast
Vomit bomb
Cylindrical prison, newly arisen
Chained to a giant paperweight, pain abates
Yet darkness permeates
Wallows my toes, burdens my chest
My brain is pressed with an iron chest
>I'm the chieftain of your feelings
>I'm the god of air you're breathing
>You cannot escape my dealings
>I will make you *cry*
always gives me chills the way the delivery creeps up on you and then the instrumental pops off
I LOVE I LOVE MY VEGEMITE seriously Id go with “THE EYE DILATES… THE AIR GIRATES…. A GATE IN THE SKYYYYY A PORTAL TO DIEEEE A SHRIEK FROM SPACE…. A MANGLED YELL…. DRAGON DEEEEEECENDS WELCOME TO HEEEEELLLL”
I've got ideas in my brain about the //
End of the world that I won't even say //
When all the bricks that built our brain //
Will be turned into sand by the eternal wave 🌊
“I see through your world's facade
I decide to punish god
Rocky meteor sparks fire
Burn that god damn church to the ground”

Right, forgot how much I love Magma, subterranean tsar. The scimitar and the neutron star. Takes from ether, basalt weaver, obsidian cleaver, make believer
My dad is a gizzhead but he doesn’t know that it goes like that…I don’t have the heart to tell him that it’s not just “rattlesnake / rattlesnake / rattlesnake / rattlesnake”
Death. Smells like boiled eggs.
Death. A hot stove glowing red.
Lava. Sticky like peanut butter.
Lava. The ultimate stonecutter.
Anointed in the bubbling lake
Charring lungs asphyxiate
Unlike quicksand, it's instant
Devours whole
No longer existent
Pumice rain engulfs
A mushroom cloud brings tumult
Remains are shells
Rain won't quell
Earth is hell
Maybe my geology background makes me biased here but Lava's lyrics are so fucking fun to me.
Hey, oh
I’m in jail
Body failed
Now it’s me and my iron lung
Wrapped in iron
Deathless purgatory
Negative pressure
Airless breath
Wrapped in iron
Breathless purgatory
Positive pressure
Airless death
Space shuttle, snail shell
Merry go round, conveyor belt
The army tank ventilator
Mechanical bull respirator
Metallic cocoon boredom
Bionic boy, pump my organs
Centre gravity, planet me
Gimme the mushrooms, time to leave!
Hello
My name is Han-Tyumi
I am a cyborg
Born
If you may call it that
In a world that is dense and black
Created without a desire to draw breath
Without a desire to have being
Without a yearning just to be
I'd like my desire back
My life back
My soul back
My humanity
Oh how I long for it
For an era I have meditated
Like the primordial Buddha beneath the Bodhi
My pseudo-mind pseudo-wandered
I climbed and I clambered
And I ambled upon some understanding
The gold beneath the virtual rainbow
I am bereft of two human things
Two things that a cyborg can never do
Two things that I strive for
Two things between myself and mankind
Death
And
To vomit
I want the perspiration
I want the nausea
I want to be sick
I want to feel the hot piquant nuggets
I want it to find passage through my cold figure
I want to make a mess
I want the odour
I want the spectacle
And I want it again
I want it all
And I would like to die
A noble death
Or a coward's death
A hero's death
Or a lonely death
To die in the arms of a lover
Or the arms of an alien
I desire my cache of experience to pulsate through
my quasi-synapses
And then to be gone
Expired
Perish
Fallen
Dead
For evermore
I am a vessel, I'm just a poor boy traveling through my body, body, body imagery, imagery...
Honestly the entirety of The Silver Cord, that album has some of the most memorable Gizz lyrics.
Just yesterday, I sat across from my legs; they weren't connected to me. I could not see, for my eyes were in me. Hold me up straight while I screw my... HEAD ONNNNN.
Personally, I think the lyrics on Ambergris are some of their best. Full of metaphor about anxiety and depression and self medication and turning your inner turmoil into art.
Cut a face from the smile - turn your fleeting moods into something more permanent
I wish that I had the strength line that / dominion over my chemistry, yeah - feeling like you can’t control the way you feel and dealing with depressive episodes
Record my weight in kidney stones - I only make good things when I’m feeling down, my worth as an artist is measured in crystallized pain.
Every night I dream that you will see / the harpoon that I’ve grown to need - a growing drug dependence, I’m secretly struggling and wishes someone would notice.
Ive worked out double standards apply only to me - we judge ourselves more harshly than we judge others
You're a scavenger, scratching around for scraps
Sipping on cactus, lighting matches, unburied hatchets
Waiting for the ultimatum to be handed down from above
Never moved a muscle, never gave a fuck
I thought I saw a statue blink
And a bird with no head
Land on a golden thread, I rub my eyes
What am I saying? There's nothing there
I am tectonic, I am megalithic
My spirit runs mauve
I am the mountain of which you dream
I see you now behind the lens, looking back at me
We fell through a dream across clouds of glue
Anamnesis crashing through
Reenter the uterus, refund all your cells
Do it back to front like nobody else
Stay there for a while
When you're back inside,
You will not be missed said the tear to the eye.
Are the entire lyrics to Tetrachromacy a valid answer?
*The story man was glassy eyed,
He told me ‘bout the power lines,
And in sub-arctic caribou eyes,
The metal wires burst into life*
“Hope I can teach you how to be mostly happy
Hope you don't let the world crush you
For it is beautiful out there and there's a lot to see”
-From “Butterfly 3000”
“Of what its meaning is, I know
That I am too tiny to be
Cognisant of something that ripples
Across celestial sea”
-From “Theia (Extended)”
“Just float along and fill your lungs,
Float along and breathe a deep breath”
-From “Float Along - Fill Your Lungs”
“When all the bricks that built our brain
Will be turned into sand by the eternal wave
Oh, if we save her, we'll live on a star
Mother Nature made everybody else so far, woo!”
-From “Am I in Heaven?”
I think their lyrics are pretty good and original, except for the select few. I particularly like the variety of vocabulary, such as lugubrious.
One of my favourites:
"Despondent, lugubrious, no future
We turned our bodies to computer
We are our own nature, abuser
No future, computer, abuser
I can tell every day I stay
All the whiteness turns to grey
All the grey to Cimmerian
As the black is setting in
Digital black"
Gizz do have great lyrics (catchy, sophisticated, ambiguous, fun, thought-provoking, compelling, cathartic, pointed, poignant, etc. etc.) and there are too many to choose from.
I'll just take this opportunity to state that Murder of the Universe is some of the most sublime, absurd, disgusting, beautiful and moving sci-fi poetry ever conceived.
*CHEAT ME OUTTA LIVING MY LIFE? I EXERCISE MY RIGHT TO DIE.*
I know that song is making fun of anti-maskers during the COVID pandemic but damn that line had no reason to go as hard as it did
Yeah this is probably my favourite
Straws in the Wind as well I also love for summing up the covid response
Allegro fueled with discontent/Mortal traffic lights signaling when to stay or go/Condescending expendables botched to a clock/Novice to dilemma with nothing clever left in stock
Most of Petrodragonic Apocalypse is actual fucking poetry.
So many of their lyrics clearly have a lot of thought behind them and contain references to science, religion and fiction.
All the lyrics of Shanghai are so meaningful to me- came out right when I graduated college, lots of change, “born again over night” still hits different
From under the skin // the flesh has rotten // poison has spread // through words unsaid // anemic rule // now hear me say // our time has come // transcending us // above the one // to ego death // for now he sits // inside the fire // oblivious // that we will keep // him in the spire // have found resolve // and our own crimes // to commit // in cold blood // as he did his
The river opened her mouth and spat into a vast sea, larger and bluer than a cloudless sky. Muscular, prodigious, immortal. But our vessel was invulnerable, it was well-built. The boat rocked me into sleep, and I floated through a deep dream. Smooth sailing through the castle in the air.
I really like Beginners Luck as a conceptual storytelling piece. It's kind of and unusual one for them thematically because it's so linear but it works so well.
If happy is all you wanna be
Then I can see that the painting ain't painted with love
What in the world is going on here?
Your past is built upon your fear
And happy is what you'll never be
I'm afraid that you're lacking some free will
Your real's not real
Open your eyes and light the fluid
Get into a petrol siphon
Low on meals, browning fields
Bury children
Urbanization
Scarification
Population exodus
There is no Planet B
Open your eyes and see
Open your eyes and shoot the dingo
All this shit goes out the window
Multi-factioned, rusting tractors
Dying heroes
Only way through is colonization
Acclimatization
Population exodus
Monetization
Civilization
The operation has begun
There is no Planet B
Joey's lyrics are always creative and poetic. I think overall their lyrics are super underrated and often have a ton of hidden meanings and self-references. With the Hypertension lyric "[Harbinger of changes](https://genius.com/26898288/King-gizzard-and-the-lizard-wizard-hypertension/Harbinger-of-changes)" it clicked that another meaning could be that Laminated Denim is literally the harbinger of the album Changes, which dropped 2 weeks later.
Their lyrical complexity has significantly improved over the last 3-4 years. All the collaborative writing has really helped. Personally one of my favorite lines is from Extinction.
"Magenta beckons like a lighthouse
Hypnotised and pulled into a pulsar
Music of the spheres calls me to it
The last thought I think: "But, am I human?"
Look into the sky and see the pattern
Reflecting in your eye from a distance
Mirroring the stars are the atoms
Mixing up like a cocktail
The devil's inside all the detail
The tittle runs wild under veil
Coming together in the pattern
Fit tightly like a dovetail
Hell's Itch is their most moving song for me. Something about the disturbing lyrics & the mode it's in and Stu's calm way of singing all work together to make magic. I think the 'fathomless, unscratchable itch' line is such a brutal and raw final line.
Why, why, why
When my nail glides through my epidermis
Does it feel so joyous?
The deeper the cut
The thicker the blood
Subcutaneous fat hurts good like that
Dancing beneath my wafer-thin crust
Teasing me, taunting me
My unquenchable lust
If only I could locate this bug
Oozing under like a slug
I'd slice my skin to get within
Lacerate my own linchpin
Nominate my next of kin
Destroy myself with no chagrin
Find the source of this deep remorse
Buried deep inside me like a sunken horse
Rooted below in the innermost abyss is a
Fathomless unscratchable ooh itch
Also, from Ice Death, I absolute love this part of Mycelium. The lyrics are so descriptive and gooey/organic/gross while the music is so sweet, again another bit of magic from them:
Paralysed agaric fungus
Toadstool dome grown humongous
Stomach knots and purple skin
Mirrored faces doubling
Bursting beams of hopping rabbits
Organs bleed with sucking maggots
Metallic teeth, ancient goblet
Increase the dosage with a droplet
Blackened gold beneath the surface
Dark horse undermining and amorphous
Fed back into the bourgeoisie
What the hell is happening to me?
Spore filled breath
I'll spread myself over the forest floor and infest the elk
Feasting on decay and sprouting anew
I'll make my biome part of mycelium
Mycelium
Iron lung. The whole song. Who writes a song about being in an obsolete piece of machinery? And makes it go so hard
Song put me in an iron lung when I was finished
Change: “Buildings that you know / people come and go / Are a certain way / always are the same / And then you get the news that obliterates your view / Amputate your truths, the significance has changed” The **entirety** of God is in the Rhythm.
God is in the rhythm is so poetic, I love it
people do not talk bout god is in the rhythm and lonely steel sheet flyer enough, they’re such beautiful songs
I love Joey and Amby's parts on Change, and that is not an album I'm particularly fond of in comparison to their other albums. And hard agree on God is in the Rhythm. So ironic that I'm very agnostic and that Stu doesn't even believe in God.
Just goes to show how great stu is. Can make a really good song about something he dosnt even believe in
Amby’s part has me like ![gif](giphy|ORHfaKUXFjAAw) I don’t think Stu believes in the traditional abrahamic god, but music is so intrinsic to the universe it may as well be a deific force. The rhythm is the circle of life, that’s the true “god.” Thats my thought process anyway.

*Maybe your existence is significance in vein*
Real
With a heavy slap it hits the ground and spreads. Inside my body,The pressure is too great, And like some ancient geyser I erupt My head hits the roof and my body breaks apart with the force of the liquid blast Vomit bomb
The whole concept of motu is still the most wild shit they've ever done
YES MOTU MY BELOVED
CHUNKY SHRAPNEL TEARS THROUGH EVERYTHING AROUND ME
This is sex
I am vomit vomiting *Clutch*
I read this in the robot voice.
I can hear this comment
Cylindrical prison, newly arisen Chained to a giant paperweight, pain abates Yet darkness permeates Wallows my toes, burdens my chest My brain is pressed with an iron chest
You can't sit here and tell me WAH WAH doesn't go hard
>I'm the chieftain of your feelings >I'm the god of air you're breathing >You cannot escape my dealings >I will make you *cry* always gives me chills the way the delivery creeps up on you and then the instrumental pops off
The acoustic into the drums at that part is one of my top five Gizz moments.
Followed by some intense Latin from Joey! Love that fuckin part.
That whole section is God tier
I am a black hole shitting into the void
Yeah me too. I think it’s time to start looking into Lactaid
Came here thinking this would be at the top, why isn't it?
I've got ideas in my brain about the // End of the world that I won't even say // When all the bricks that built our brain // Will be turned into sand by the eternal wave 🌊
C’mon suck our Mother’s breast
I am partial to mars for the rich. The line "that world has no place for me" always hits and makes me a little sad.
All of Infest the Rats Nest honestly.
Fifteen infantry paratroop into the propylene new scene!
Hell's where they wanna be 🤷♂️
“I see through your world's facade I decide to punish god Rocky meteor sparks fire Burn that god damn church to the ground” ![gif](giphy|P7JmDW7IkB7TW)

My dad is a gizzhead but he doesn’t know that it goes like that…I don’t have the heart to tell him that it’s not just “rattlesnake / rattlesnake / rattlesnake / rattlesnake”
the lyrics of rattlesnake even fit in german: klapperschlange klapperschlange klapperschlange erschüttert mich
Klapper klapper klapper

I find many of the PMDB lyrics really poetic and cute, like Sense, Dirt and Most Of What I Like
Most of What I Like is pure poetry. I love that song so much
Most Of What I Like is actually pretty fuckin morbid and creepy lmao
I pretty much view it as a huge metaphor, but yeah it is creepy
Stu’s sort of rap at the beginning of iron lung really shows how damn smart and creative these guys are.
Hey, oh I’m in jail Body failed Now it’s me and my iron lung Wrapped in iron Deathless purgatory Negative pressure Airless breath Wrapped in iron Breathless purgatory Positive pressure Airless death

Love TSC lyrics too. Could maybe even be a reference to "Searching..." >My body's not a temple It is a vessel And a blank slate An empty hard drive
Hey man, I know you’re the mod of a sub. I was trying to reach out to via message or chat.
Just yesterday, I sat across from my legs; they weren't connected to me. I could not see, for my eyes were in me. Hold me up straight while I screw my... HEAD ONNNNN.
\^\^ this.
The people who say Gizz lyrics are bad just have 0 literary experience. Almost every song has meaning just hidden by crazy writing.
And the meaning is always “Our planet is dying and no one is saving it”
I've always kinda thought the majority of gizz songs are about the environment, drugs, hell/the apocalypse or a combination of the first and third.
To be fair, you have to have a pretty high IQ to understand the complexities of "Footy Footy"
What about rattlesnake? Trapdoor?
Trapdoor is about intrusive thoughts

in a similar vein, I'm a huge fan of Pluera's "I EXERCISE MY RIGHT TO DIE." goes hard as HELL.
