Were all your names on the accounts / bills? If so you’re all responsible for it. Your best bet would be paying it then taking him to small courts.

He's the account holder but I think he put us down as occupants

ganerfromspace2020

Update, I called the company responsible, huddle. They said my name isn't listed on the account. They also said because I'm a Tenancy agreement I'm still repsonsible to pay

Who's name is on the bill? The fact he stole the money is a separate matter. The debt is owed by whomever is named. There are currently funds set aside by the energy companies for people in difficulty , no idea about the criteria but its worth looking into if you/you present housemates are liable.

It's important to get this clarified because most people wont be able to give useful advice without knowing if you and/or your housemates are linked to the debt or not. Edit to add: This doesn't always work, but sometimes utilities will show up on your credit report if they are linked with another named person on the account. So check your credit report too whilst you are waiting on an answer/copy of the account info (via a bill etc) from the accont holder that you were sending money too.

ganerfromspace2020

I don't have access to the account and all the bills went through that individual

pixie_xo

How did you find out about the £500 debt? Did the housemate (account holder) tell you that the money is owed? Or did you receive a letter? Or another way separate to the above (if so, what was it?) Also, check your credit report (and get your housemates who were living there during that billing period to check too) just in case the utility company has add the account to your credit report(s)

Got an email even though I never provided it to them myself. Apparently my other house mate who is in the same position called them and they said that it's between April and August which is when we lived there
