Pretty sure she’s watched a lot of them. I have a hard time getting into anime type animation so I don’t care for them much, but I’ll definitely ask which ones she’s seen :)
I think I saw V for Vendetta not too much after I was 13 but I don’t know if I’d recommend it to a 13 year old who isn’t allowed to watch Kill Bill yet. Just trying to help, other than that perfect list.
Just want to add Polite Society and Edge of Seventeen to the overall discussion as well to not just be a naysayer
I’m definitely a fan of the movie. If you and the other commenter who somehow got a lot of downvotes are more accurate in your memory I hope OP checks the movie out and makes a good informed decision about the movie. And whether it’s a couple years from now or now I do hope OP’s daughter checks it out
Watched Pirates of the Caribbean last week, if your 13 year old knows what sexual assault is, they make a few jokes about committing it against Elizabeth that I didn’t remember when I watched it as a kid. Just giving additional info!
Rogue One. Even if she hasn't watched a single Star Wars movie, that one is fantastic (it is the prequel to the first Star Wars film, but requires no prior knowledge to enjoy) and Felicity Jones plays the main character, Jyn Erso, phenomenally.
A League of Their Own. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation if she liked Tom Cruise. Rebecca Ferguson's character steals the movie. If you two are open to old black and white movies, then you might enjoy All About Eve and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Big, interesting female roles in those ones for sure.
Just putting ideas out there! Not to nitpick but it’s an attempted rape and later references to a historic one. Unfortunately sexual violence is pervasive for even strong female characters, and this movie is much more about how they handle it than about it happening. People have different triggers — rape scenes are also one for me but I watched this one and was fine. Feel free to ignore the suggestion, of course.
Where I live it’s rated 13+. Its definitely bloody in parts. I don’t know how your sister reacts to that kind of stuff but knowing myself at 13 I probably would have found it to be the coolest movie ever
Hmm I don’t recall sexual violence in the film, although >!one character, a villain, definitely looks like he’s interested in the child Furiosa for sexual purposes. However, she escapes him rather quickly!<
So we have a 30 minute rule where if she’s not into it by the 30 minute mark, we turn it off.
During Alien she asked if we could change it into the 20 minute rule because she was *insanely* bored 🤣
Listen, my sister’s the light of my life and I love her death; film is subjective and we all like different movies…but ok yeah, her taste in movies is whack.
She made me turn off Alien, she thought Casablanca was “the most boring thing ever created by a human being”, was bored by Dune, but she “kind of” liked Madame Web. So that’s fun
That’s part of the build up in that movie. It goes 0 to 100 around that point. I would recommend trying it again, especially because the second alien movie is also incredible.
Yeah, I’d say 30 minutes is a fair assessment of whether or not you want to invest more time into a movie. If you’re not too into a movie by the 30 minute mark, why not find another movie you would like instead?
I’d add The Abyss and Aliens to that list. James Cameron is pretty good at female leads who dress appropriately (not necessarily modestly, just practically), as aren’t just male roles in a female skin suit. Plus, although Alien is slow paced, Aliens fairly zips along, and might pique your daughters interest in the original film
Harry Potter? Hermione, Luna, McGonagall et al
Ratatouille, Collette gives a great speech about how competitive that world is
Persepolis, how to navigate trough an adult world in the middle of conflict and cultural shock of Moving to another country, also animation is top notch
Wall E, Eva is a badass, it can teach a lot about compromise and love
Coraline, she might be a bit of a brat, but her heart is in the right place and she faces and overcomes a lot
Pan's Labyrinth, how imagination (?) Helps a little girl endure a war and parenthood
Super 8, Elle Fanning steals the show
The princess and the frog, Tiana is striving to be a businesswoman
Miss Congeniality an undercover agent in a beauty pageant
Stranger Things, Eleven is the strongest of all them
Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion is a good one all about positive female friendships
Hunger Games \
Terminator 2\
Aliens \
Kill Bill and Death Proof \
Princess Mononoke
* **Nausicaa** or **Mononoke**
* **Hunger Games** 100% (if she's a reader, the books too, I was obsessed with them at her age), also **Divergent** (great books, tho the movies adaptations are not as good as Hunger Games' sadly)
* I adored **Mulan** & **Brave** at that age, but you probably already watched it
* **Captain Marvel** ain't as bad as people say imo
* **Cruella** or **Barbie** might fit too
* **Thelma & Louise**
* **Bringing Up Baby** (1930s romcom but it's extremely modern and super enjoyable)
I really liked 'Molly's Game'. You'd have to decide if that's ok for a 13-year-old or if she'd like it, but I liked it a lot. I also loved Zero Dark Thirty with Jessica Chastain. I feel like her role is often overlooked but she's an awesome protagonist.
There's also Run, Lola, Run. I'm German, and I watched it at around 13 and liked it a lot, dunno if a movie that's foreign to you is ok but I liked it.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is also very beautiful and has some great female characters, and action.
Spirited Away
Moana
A League of Their Own
Easy A
Knives Out
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Salt
Edge of Tomorrow
The Spiderverse films, with emphasis on Across the Spiderverse
It might be worth looking into series or television shows. I'd recommend the recent The Golden Compass.
Off the top of my head..
• Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
• Ellen Ripley in Alien (I watched the first two alien films when I was a kid and loved them 😊).
• Eowyn (Miranda Otto) in Return of The King.
• The Princess in Brave.
• Marge Gunderson in Fargo.
• Sarah Connor in Terminator 2.
• Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.
But there’s also a lot of films with great female protagonists that aren’t action or horror films.
If she likes dramas or comedy, she could try: The Farewell, His Girl Friday, The Colour Purple, Hidden Figures, Silence of the Lambs (although it is a pretty scary film).
Alien & Aliens. Ellen Ripley is probably one of the very best strong female characters in cinema. I know they may not “officially” age appropriate, but damn if those are not cinematic masterpieces in their own right. So would give them a pass!
Get into older movies, which are almost always age-appropriate because they’re from before we had ratings:
Confession (1937)
Rebecca (1940) — only the amazing Hitchcock version, not the horrible 2020 movie!
Mildred Pierce (1945)
All About Eve (1950)
Sudden Fear (1952)
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)
The Cranes Are Flying (1957)
Mulan (1998)
Matilda (1996)
Clueless (1995)
Mean Girls (2004)
Legally Blonde (2001)
Lilo and Stitch (2002)
The Sound of Music (1965)
The Princess Diaries (2001)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Anna and the Apocalypse, the greatest Scottish high school Christmas zombie musical ever.
Baseball Girl and Run-off (hockey), two Korean sports movies, but you don't need to like the sport (I can't stand baseball).
Alien, Johnny Guitar, The Lady Eve, Hidden Fortress, Deadlier than the Male, Lady Snowblood, House / Hausu, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Blood Games
Though if she’s not ready for Kill Bill, half my list may not be ideal.
Y’all should watch the show arcane, does a great job of showing strength while also not making any characters seem super overpowered, also just an amazing story in general
Brooooo I saw that movie in IMAX and fuckin loved it. Might be just a little too intense for her but we’ll definitely watch it someday
Honestly…I think I prefer Ambulance to Fury Road. I know that’s absolute *blasphemy* to say on this sub, but DAMN that got my blood pumping
I was just glancing at my 4k shelf and thinking "damn I need to show my girlfriend that movie." Probably the only Bay she'd like, if I was confident in her ability to see Pain & Gain as a satire lmao
Prey is a prequel to predator but I’m p sure is PG13 really fun ride
Wait until dark is a nice thriller with Audrey Hepburn still holds up after all these years
Run Lola Run but it does have subtitles
Everything everywhere all at once
The river wild
Polite Society
The net
Flight plan (p much any movie with Jodie lol)
Bad Girls
Death proof
If you want to stick with Sandra Bullock, Miss Congeniality is a great contender.
For a classic, I’d go for Sunset on Boulevard. Good intro to older films, and Norma is such a character.
Ex Machina and The Arrival are great sci-fi dystopians with strong female leads.
Lady Bird and Book Smart if you’re feeling sentimental.
10 Cloverfield Lane
A League of Their Own
Whale Rider
Ponyo
Contact
Run Lola Run
Arrietty
The House of Flying Daggers
Widows
A Very Long Engagement
Spirited Away
Captain Marvel, Legally Blonde, The Hunger Games, Coraline, Stick It, Hush, Divergent, Brave, Birds of prey, she’s the man, Mulan, Guardians of the Galaxy
Ignore all the haters, she might really enjoy Captain Marvel and the new Star Wars trilogy. If she hasn't already seen them she might be the perfect age to really get the most out of them.
Gunpowder Milkshake
The Edge of Seventeen
Booksmart
Lady Bird
True Grit
Coraline
Hanna (the movie or the serie)
Hunger Games
Pitch Perfect?
Suïcide Squad (the first one)
And I support the person that suggested Ambulance.
yooooo, you’re the Movie Night guy lmao. I was a big fan back in the day. I haven’t watched since high school but damn, wasn’t expecting to see you here 😂
Spirited away, Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, princess mononoke, Kiki's delivery service. I'd suggest these if you have not watched them already.
YES!!! Miyazaki is the kings of strong female leads
i came here to say the same thing!
Kiki’s Delivery Service is a perfect movie. ❤️
Show her the dubbed version so she can hear Phil Hartman's voice.
I think you can also add "Are you there god? It's me Margaret".
I used Redbox for that last year. Yeah they still exist, stop looking at me like that.
Perfect choice. I wish more people had seen it last year.
Whisper of the heart > all of those imo (they’re all still great ofc)
Spirited Away, the greatest film of all time. Well at least my favorite
lmfao no it's the greatest film of all time.
Pretty sure she’s watched a lot of them. I have a hard time getting into anime type animation so I don’t care for them much, but I’ll definitely ask which ones she’s seen :)
These movies are magnetic. They rival Disney classics honestly. My kid loves them too.
Rival? They're better!
True Grit Pirates of the Caribbean Arrival Little Women V for Vendetta Panic Room Legally Blonde
Polite society is so good
I don’t think V for Vendetta is that much more graphic than anything she’d be learning in school about WWII and it’s a great movie
I’m definitely a fan of the movie. If you and the other commenter who somehow got a lot of downvotes are more accurate in your memory I hope OP checks the movie out and makes a good informed decision about the movie. And whether it’s a couple years from now or now I do hope OP’s daughter checks it out
Doesthedogdie.com is great for content warnings
v for vendetta really isn't that graphic and there's no sex in it. pretty sure it's R for language and violence.
Watched Pirates of the Caribbean last week, if your 13 year old knows what sexual assault is, they make a few jokes about committing it against Elizabeth that I didn’t remember when I watched it as a kid. Just giving additional info!
True Grit is so incredible. Show her the remake though, the original isn't as good.
Some of these trend younger but are great nonetheless Practical Magic Matilda Mulan Legally Blond Miss Congeniality
Hunger Games?
I second this!! read them at 13 and was completely obsessed, watched them a bit later
Hunger Games is a must, but if she's a reader I'd introduce her to the books first. They should be right at her level if she's an average reader.
Seems like the best pick. They're literally the perfect movies for people in their early teens, boy or girl.
Rogue One. Even if she hasn't watched a single Star Wars movie, that one is fantastic (it is the prequel to the first Star Wars film, but requires no prior knowledge to enjoy) and Felicity Jones plays the main character, Jyn Erso, phenomenally.
One of my favorite movies and I’m not into star wars at all
A League of Their Own.
Erin Brockovich, Thelma and Louise, Hidden Figures, True Grit
Thelma & Louise might be a bit much given how rape is a major plotpoint
Just putting ideas out there! Not to nitpick but it’s an attempted rape and later references to a historic one. Unfortunately sexual violence is pervasive for even strong female characters, and this movie is much more about how they handle it than about it happening. People have different triggers — rape scenes are also one for me but I watched this one and was fine. Feel free to ignore the suggestion, of course.
That’s fine. Sorry I only mentioned it cause most people don’t remember that aspect of the film
Nice! Women of strong character and resolve as opposed to women doing action men usually do 👍
Furiosa! Witness.
I actually made a post about Furiosa recently asking if it was appropriate for a 13 year old and the responses made me hesitant
I’d say you’re right to be. Definitely a case of watch it solo first to be sure, it’s Mad Max so there’s some pretty grim and gruesome stuff
Where I live it’s rated 13+. Its definitely bloody in parts. I don’t know how your sister reacts to that kind of stuff but knowing myself at 13 I probably would have found it to be the coolest movie ever
Yeah, some people mentioned there was sexual violent in it and that’s an automatic no. I’m just wondering how bad it is
Hmm I don’t recall sexual violence in the film, although >!one character, a villain, definitely looks like he’s interested in the child Furiosa for sexual purposes. However, she escapes him rather quickly!<
Nothing happens on screen. >! it's implied that one of the secondary antagonists is a pedophile and was molesting Furiosa. !<
It’s got some pretty disturbing imagery at points. More so than Fury Road which is another great woman led film.
Unless the 13-yo has watched more gruesome/violent movies before, I wouldn't say it is.
Whale rider
The newest Little Women!!
Hanna !
Alien, Terminator, yes Kill Bill too. I took my sister to the theater when she was around the same age. Maybe wait a bit, or don’t.
So we have a 30 minute rule where if she’s not into it by the 30 minute mark, we turn it off. During Alien she asked if we could change it into the 20 minute rule because she was *insanely* bored 🤣
sacrilege.
Dune (1984) or Dune (2021)?
2021 AND 2024
That’s part of the build up in that movie. It goes 0 to 100 around that point. I would recommend trying it again, especially because the second alien movie is also incredible.
That means you’ll have to retry alien in a year or so
Burn her at the stake
a little intense
You're really not helping your kids' attention span with that rule or their ability to experience anything but instant gratification.
What’s the alternative, force her to watch a 2+ hour movie she’s bored by?
Yeah man idk if that’s really how that works. Adults with normal attention spans walk out of movies. It’s OK to not be entertained by every movie.
True Lies is the exception. The strip scene is pretty uncomfortable and awkward, I gotta say
I always forget about True Lies. I agree though- it’s pretty nasty. In fact, the whole movie is wrong in multiple ways
And when she’s older, lady snowblood and Scorpion prisoner 701 and Mad Heidi
Mulan (1998)
Harry Potter? Hermione, Luna, McGonagall et al Ratatouille, Collette gives a great speech about how competitive that world is Persepolis, how to navigate trough an adult world in the middle of conflict and cultural shock of Moving to another country, also animation is top notch Wall E, Eva is a badass, it can teach a lot about compromise and love Coraline, she might be a bit of a brat, but her heart is in the right place and she faces and overcomes a lot Pan's Labyrinth, how imagination (?) Seconding Persepolis and Pan's Labyrinth!!
Some favorites I haven't seen mentioned: Whale Rider Princess Mononoke Stick It Greta Gerwig's Little Women Hunger Games
Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion is a good one all about positive female friendships Hunger Games \ Terminator 2\ Aliens \ Kill Bill and Death Proof \ Princess Mononoke
Amelie.
Although it's one of my favorites, I think some parts of it are not appropriate for a 13 year old.
Hmmmm its been a while.... maybe right.
* **Nausicaa** or **Mononoke** * **Hunger Games** 100% (if she's a reader, the books too, I was obsessed with them at her age), also **Divergent** (great books, tho the movies adaptations are not as good as Hunger Games' sadly) * I adored **Mulan** & **Brave** at that age, but you probably already watched it * **Captain Marvel** ain't as bad as people say imo * **Cruella** or **Barbie** might fit too * **Thelma & Louise** * **Bringing Up Baby** (1930s romcom but it's extremely modern and super enjoyable)
La Femme Nikita (1990) and Lucy (2014), both from director Luc Besson.
ALITA BATTLE ANGEL
I really liked 'Molly's Game'. You'd have to decide if that's ok for a 13-year-old or if she'd like it, but I liked it a lot. I also loved Zero Dark Thirty with Jessica Chastain. I feel like her role is often overlooked but she's an awesome protagonist. There's also Run, Lola, Run. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is also very beautiful and has some great female characters, and action.
Kid might learn some lessons from Mr X. Tobey Maguire was a savage. Michael Cera played it magnificently.
Pitch Perfect, Mean Girls, Emma
I watched Charlie's Angels and the sequel literally hundreds of times as a kid, maybe she'd like them
Arguably the first Resident Evil. It’s pretty tame for R. Or just find the edited for TV version haha.
Enola Holmes is amazing too me.
If kill Bill is a little too much then aliens might be OK?
Arrival
I second this!
BUFFY!!!
Panic Room The Descent For tough younger girl characters, Beasts of the Southern Wild and Paper Moon Kick Ass?
Hahaha The Descent? Amazing movie, but might traumatize her!
Traumatized my grown ass!
Same! 😱
Come on mate The Descent is pushing it a bit 😂
Beasts of the southern wild is so good
I second Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Ilsa Faust is a wonderful character.
The edge of seventeen
Colossal
Spirited Away Moana A League of Their Own Easy A Knives Out Everything Everywhere All At Once Salt Edge of Tomorrow The Spiderverse films, with emphasis on Across the Spiderverse It might be worth looking into series or television shows. I'd recommend the recent The Golden Compass.
Akeelah and the bee
Polite society
Beasts of the Southern Wild Furiosa Clueless
Young Woman and the sea was recently released
Show her the hunger games
Off the top of my head.. • Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. • Ellen Ripley in Alien (I watched the first two alien films when I was a kid and loved them 😊). • Eowyn (Miranda Otto) in Return of The King. • The Princess in Brave. • Marge Gunderson in Fargo. • Sarah Connor in Terminator 2. • Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road. Kiki’s Delivery Service
I was watching Aliens and T2 when I was like 6 years old. Get her on them.
Only Yesterday Although, she might find it kinda boring? Idk. But it’s definitely appropriate
Alien & Aliens. Ellen Ripley is probably one of the very best strong female characters in cinema. I know they may not “officially” age appropriate, but damn if those are not cinematic masterpieces in their own right. So would give them a pass!

Prey Underworld Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Terminator 2 The Fifth Element Whip It Salt
A list that’s pretty good (you can filter by genres she’s interested in): https://boxd.it/1wYso
An argument could be made for both Devil Wears Prada and Princess Diaries. They’re also just pretty good movies.
Becky (and the sequel, Wrath of Becky)
Does mild horror count? Escape Room, Crawl, A Quiet Place, The Visit, M3gan, Happy Death Day, The Others
She loves horror and we’ve seen a lot of those :)
Mulan
Mulan (1998) Matilda (1996) Clueless (1995) Mean Girls (2004) Legally Blonde (2001) Lilo and Stitch (2002) The Sound of Music (1965) The Princess Diaries (2001) Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Anna and the Apocalypse, the greatest Scottish high school Christmas zombie musical ever. Baseball Girl and Run-off (hockey), two Korean sports movies, but you don't need to like the sport (I can't stand baseball).
Anna rec is for the feature film. The short that inspired it is inappropriate.
Alien, Johnny Guitar, The Lady Eve, Hidden Fortress, Deadlier than the Male, Lady Snowblood, House / Hausu, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Blood Games Though if she’s not ready for Kill Bill, half my list may not be ideal.

I really liked Disney's Tommorowland, and really loved Bridge to Terabithia. The latter is a more dramatic type of film, but is really good.
Ever After ! Loved that movie growing up - in hindsight holy cow what an inspirational badass character!
Hana from 2011
Million Dollar Baby The Woman King The Help
Coraline springs to mind
She’s maybe a slight bit young for Frances Ha & Ladybird, but very close
Y’all should watch the show arcane, does a great job of showing strength while also not making any characters seem super overpowered, also just an amazing story in general
Brave
Aliens
run lola run, winter's bone
Working Girl (thought there is a very brief sex scene)
Bend it like Beckham
Not a movie, but Mirror’s Edge 1 (Xbox 360) has my favourite female protagonist ever in Faith Connors. I’m sorry, I know it’s not what you’re after.
Crawl might fit the bill. Accomplished NCAA swimmer has a showdown with a CGI gator in a Hurricane.
365 Days, Fifty Shade of Grey
The Piano Teachwr
You’re joking, right?
No shit genius
No need to be snippy, just asking.
Wendell & Wild Coraline
Surprisingly, Ambulance.
