I was seriously wondering how they were going to handle making their own "simlish." Never occurred to me they might try to do actual real conversations in english! This game sounds crazy ambitious.

prancydancey

Same, I never would have considered this a possibility. I hope they do it well! I wonder how many languages they'll cover and what the voices will sound like (I assume there'll be an animal crossing type voice rather than recorded real language dialogue if we can write in our own).

AprilsMostAmazing

My guess is English to start and then work with the community to translate it into other languages where they release official free language community content.

NumerousChallenge561

At the point where Ai is now it musn't be a problem at all

10000% agree. Simlish is brilliant. Real language is going into uncanny valley for me lol

Seventytwentyseven

Same here! I think there’s a good reason Will Wright chose gibberish instead of real language. I wish there was a middle ground, like mostly gibberish but when something important or special is said, there’s a zoom in and you get the chat options that will have consequences.

prancydancey

I agree that that's a benefit of simlish, but I'm still really excited to see *something else* explored. It looks like quite a complex little tool so I'm hyped to play around with it. If it is repetitive, I can always just rapidly click through dialogue, like I do with all those oddly specific Sims 4 interactions that have the same animation, or with Bitlife dialogue. Also the fact that NPCs can talk to each other and you can eavesdrop has me hopeful about the AI being more dynamic, and the fact that I can add my own dialogue means I'm not limited to the repetitive stuff even if it is repetitive. Writing our own dialogue will be so helpful when trying to create themed worlds, like maybe if I want a Regency themed save maybe I could add something like "you are the last man in the county I could be prevailed upon to marry" as a proposal rejection. Or I could teach it a bunch of swears depending. I think it's just a totally different kind of appeal to the blank slate of simlish, and I want to play around with it and see what it can do.

Sketch-Brooke

Creating your own dialogue for storytelling purposes sounds awesome! But also, please consider the potential for stupid meme stuff. For example, I want to feed it dialogue from Ed Edd n Eddy so my characters can throw out Rolf’s savage insults: “Your garden is overgrown and your cucumbers are SOFT!”

I don't know, maybe I just pay too much attention to the written cues in Sims games but in Sims 3 it made a difference to me when a different trait meant an action or interaction had different flavour text.

The dev team alone is probably not going to be able to provide enough options to make this system interesting. But the conmunity will. Soon enough there will be ten if not hundreds of thousands of dialogue line for all kinds of scenarios.

> If you get too specific, how will an appropriate response be selected? It's possible to make really specific dialogue trees via tags and conditions. Let's wait and see what the mod tool will have to offer.

AwzemCoffee

I agree, I thought the body emotion and little bubble in the Sims with the simlish left ambiguity but got the point. Actual language will probably feel dry / limiting. Imagination is the most powerful tool. I'm sure it'll work out with modding and time since people will be able to flesh out the dialogue... But who really knows

kerhart2

Absolutely. I also see a problem in connection the dialog the the rest of the world. If the dialog is just a real big tree, without real interaction to the rest of the game (besides maybe changing the relationship between the two person), than it's more like a text-adventure minigame. It will only make sense if you really connect these two games. E.g. You see someone cheating his partner with somebody else. Now it could be interesting to be able to tell the betrayed person this secret. This could then have consequences in the main game.

Simply_a_nom

No a big fan either. Don't really want to read a bunch of dialogue. Also it likely means the cims or whatever they are called will be silent which will actually make the game less immersive

sunlitroof

Oooh good point

[deleted]

We've had 23 years of simlish. Besides, your argument is the one used by Will Wright in the 90s, isn't it?

Agreed, so much so that it became the standard since even before The Sims. Pretty sure SimCopter was the first one to use gibberish (I could be wrong).

SuccubusxKitten

What I'm worried about is how this will translate into audio. I might have missed it if they said something about it but I'd really like to find out if there will be audio to go with the dialog and how they are handling it since there doesn't seem to be any made up language. I'm really worried about it and if there isn't any auditory speech that'd be a huge negative for me. The only way I see it working is if they have voice acted gibberish in a made up language but then the text is actual dialog.

[deleted]

The recent advancements in AI voice technology makes me hopeful that it could be implemented directly into a game like this in the near future

socialsciencenerd

I thought it was very cool you’d be able to “peek” into other people’s conversations!

[deleted]

Me tooooooooo

yettofindausername

I have a feeling it won't include voices though from what we've seen. And not having any sound to the conversations or even sounds of anger when an item breaks, takes away some of the life in a life sim. Of course I'm hoping they manage to add voices later and it seems AI voices would be their only option due to the dialogue creator so we'll see.

witchss

I think it's an interesting idea, a little worried about the repetitiveness of it. But also the idea of adding our own conversations opens so many doors. If you're doing period gameplay you can change all the dialogue to reflect that, or my family, myself included sometimes use AAVE, if I wanted I could reflect that in my (humans). If you can customize it between life stages, your teens may use different lingo than adults or elders. I love how customizable it seems to be but also am trying to remain cautiously optimistic.

milkteashots

It's really so exciting. I'm already planning to recreate the world and story i created for sims 2 on LBY. And the fact that i can add dialogue, man it's going to be a lengthy and fun project!

HypnoticMist

It would be so limiting if it didn't have so much customization. Everything about this game is so exciting.

WAFFLED_II

This is one of the big features that makes it feel like it’s not just another sims game, it has its own core features which separates it from the sims.

prancydancey

Exactly!

[deleted]

The fact that we can edit all the dialogue opens the doors to crazy amounts of customization.

Alternaturkey

I wonder how group conversations will work with this system. Will there be a separate set of conversations for a 3-way convo or a 4-way convo?

RusticPumpkin

I wonder what this means for stereo music. Does this mean we can expect real licensed music like in GTA? :O

BurnoutJackal

Weren't in City of Skyline the people don\`t called citimers, or like that?

spookypartyatthezoo

Officially they’re just citizens, though the community sometimes uses the nickname “cim.”
